The Ku Klux Klan

The Ku Klux Klan famous for their white robes and pointy white hoods have been around for more than 143 years. The Ku Klux Klan was formed at the end of the American civil war. The Klan contained all white supremacist men who did not agree with the Republican Party. The Klan is still around today but it is not as large as it once was due to the government stepping in to prevent violence.

The Ku Klux Klan was formed in 1865 by six confederate veterans. The Klan began making their name heard in southern America by assassinating Republican Party members. In 1868 the Klan was rumored to have 550,000 male members. The Klan believed that all African Americans voted republican. In 1870 the Klan ran out of funds and shut down.

In 1920 the second Ku Klux Klan was formed. “The second clan was anti- immigrant, anti- catholic and anti-semantic”. The new Klan was spread throughout the United States. The new Klan caused other people within the country such as New England where people had torched an African American school. The new Klan membership passed 4 million people. The Klan had defeated a Democratic party who was against the Klan. They celebrated in New Jersey by burning crosses.

The Klan lost its popularity in the 1930’s.

Several new variations of the Ku Klux Klan were formed in the 1950’s to counter the civil rights movement. The Klan had continued to take part in various assassinations such as “the 1966 firebombing death of NAACP leader Vernon Dahmer, 1964 murder of two black teens”. Today most of the time we hear about the Ku Klux Klan is when there is a conviction of someone from the Klan who murdered a person and in movies such as “Hot Fuzz”. The Klan’s main focus is on illegal immigrants. The Klan’s site has several places where you can report a neighbor or co-worker who you believe is an illegal immigrant. The Klan will most likely be stopped but it will come back like it has done for the past 143 years.
