Abstract

Many studies have been conducted on anxiety in EFL classroom settings and also on individuals’ Emotional Intelligence skills in a variety of situations. The major purpose of this study was to assess if there were any specific associations between EI skills (such as interpersonal ,intrapersonal and stress -management skills ) and EFL college students’ anxiety in Tabriz, Iran.

Emotional intelligence is simply defined as the ability to recognize and regulate emotions in ourselves and others.

Participants of the study were 152 EFL college students, both males and females, who were selected randomly among freshmen and sophomores in Islamic Azad University -Tabriz. Two questionnaires were used to collect the required data to determine the level of foreign language classroom anxiety and emotional intelligence skills. The first questionnaire was Horwitz’s foreign language classroom anxiety scale (FLCAS) and the next one was Bar-on’s Emotional Intelligence test. Based on the quantitative findings of this study, it was found that there exits a significant correlation between foreign language learning anxiety and emotional intelligence skills in total (r = – .458, p=.000). It was also found there was significant negative correlations among all the selected sub skills of EI in this study, except between interpersonal relationships and anxiety ,in which (r =- .171, p=.050). It was also noted that the difference of anxiety mean scores between EFL male and female students in Iran was not significant. Based on results of this study, the difference of EI mean scores between EFL males and females in Iran was not significant, except the sub skills “stress-management, self-actualization and stress tolerance in which there was a significant EI difference means scores. In accord with the findings of this study, the skills of emotional intelligence can serve an outstanding support in helping EFL students to manage the level of anxiety.

About me and my son.
It's almost been a year since Dante was born. :)

It’s January 21, 2012. In just three weeks, my son will turn a year old!
It’s amazing that it has already been almost a year, and it doesn’t really feel like it for me. For Dante’s father though, I am pretty sure he feels like the time has slipped by and he’s missed almost everything since he moved.
Dante is now jabbering about everything, walking and running away, and getting into as much as possible. He’s gotten so big! But not enough to fill in his 12 month pants! (Which seems to be both too long and big for him)
I’m so proud of my son and can’t wait to see what this new year will bring as the days, weeks and months pass by me and my beautiful son.

So far, everything for his birthday part next month is ready, except for date and time. But the supplies are already ordered by his father’s family and recieved here where we are. Dino is the theme! It is sad that Brian and his family cannot be here for the party, but that just means I’ll have to take extra pictures just for them. I thank them so much for helping with the party stuff. And of course the clothes and anything else that is needed. Most credit for things go to them.

As many problems that have popped up in my life in the past few months, Dante has never stopped growing and I’m come to focus on that. Just three weeks more to watch my baby grow before he turns a year. And three more weeks to make sure everything kind of goes smoothly for everyone. So, instead of boring people with the rest of all this, send happy birthday wishes!

The Gateway of the Most Important Seaway of the World
The beach is unique in its beauty and tidiness

The great tourist of Venice City, Marco polo served the King Kublai Khan of China for 17 years. He was not only the special advisor of the King but also the center of his grants. Kublai Khan was the super power of his age and his court was the super court. But Marco Polo was getting fed up of this court and recalling his home very much.

He requested the King for leave, which was accepted reluctantly. Then he started his journey with his father, uncle and 600 people in yachts to his way back home to Venice city of Italy. He entered from China to the Indian Ocean through Malacca, since it was the only way that joins Indian Ocean to South China Sea.

It was also the most important seaway 8 centuries back as it is now, where big trading ships used to transfer merchandize from China, Japan and other countries of the Pacific Ocean to India, Middle East, Europe and African countries. That’s why it is also known as “World’s Seaway”. One of the gates of this seaway is “Malacca”, which is also the city of Malaysia and on the other side is “Sumatra”, the important city of Indonesia.

The cool snowy breeze still blows the same way as used to in 1292, when Marco polo had to settle for five months along with his sea caravan in Sumatra waiting for the settling down of the climate. But even the worst thing that Marco polo had to face was the sea piracy, which he had to face many times. This problems is still alive, but at that time the weapons were not as sophisticated as they are now.

Marco polo writes, “Only 18 people could reach safe and sound to Venice among 600 people. My father and uncle were also among them. Though our clothes were turned into rags but diamonds were still fixed on them, which Kublai Khan had granted us at the time of our departure”.

The Malacca is situated 148 kilometers west of Kuala Lumpur. There is a never endings series of forest between these two cities. The trees in the forest are mainly rubber producing trees. A scar has been made on the tree trunk and a vessel similar to cooking pot has been attached beside that scar for collecting rubber in the shape of thick juice which afterwards turns into rubber.

Rubber is the main export of Malaysia but the arrival of artificial plastic has reduced this export to much extent because of its cheaper rates. The road from Kuala Lumpur to Malacca is not a Motor way rather it is a Highway having very low traffic. Few small cities lie between Kuala Lumpur and Malacca. Malacca in fact is the smallest city of Malaysia. It is totally an autonomous state.

After the renaissance in Europe the adventurers and tourists headed towards East. They were in the search of new worlds and also wanted to earn lot of money. Marco polo, the great traveler had already mentioned in his account of journeys that Europeans were always interested in the treasures.

That’s why the discovery of America, the discovery of the ruins of ancient town of Latin America, search for treasures in Africa and even the search of the remains of pharos are all dependent on the European’s treasure hunt obsession. These adventurers used to go out in search of treasures with the help of old decay maps and marks and saw dreams of becoming rich overnight. They started their search from Portugal and Spain due to the fact that the then Muslim Arab governments who were equipped with the then most modern shipping and sea voyaging techniques, used to teach the inhabitants about these techniques.

This is the reason that the fortune-hunters of the European renaissance spread in the world from these two countries (under the influence of Muslims sea knowledge) and not only ruled the world but also given birth to a new western culture, which is still alive. It can easily be judged now that how big civilization becomes helpful to other, if positively applied instead of mere opposition.

Alfonso de Albuquerque, the famous Portugal’s adventurer of the history, headed this way on 15th April from the newly formed Indian Portuguese colony Goa along with 1200 people and 17 boats. After reaching Malacca, he took control of it till the end of August. Before Alfonso de Albuquerque, Malacca remain under Muslim regime for long, since Arab sailors and traders reached there earlier, spread Islam and set the Muslim regime in this Far East area which was under the ruling of the local Sultans.

Arab’s Muslims were very expert in shipping techniques and thus received much popularity in Spain. They were fully aware of the sea and its passages. Their sharper eyes recognized the importance of the Strait of Malacca and its gateway. They had the sense that for trading from Far East and China through sea, it would be essential taking control of this seaway.

Therefore, Muslims continued ruling over there since 1300 when at last in 1511 Alfonso de Albuquerque took control over there. Alfonso de Albuquerque defeated the then Muslim ruler Sultan Mehmood Shah and turned Malacca into a Portuguese colony. But Portuguese could not get hold of it for long and soon in 1641 Holland captured the Strait after defeating him.

They ruled till 1741 until famous British East India Company got hold of it. Now, Britain had been the Super Power and it was fully aware of the sea secrets. The Britain was preparing to control the world and thus their hold over the strait was essential. The Indian Ocean and the nearby countries was its target. They could get the raw material from there that could run the factories of the new world and new civilization.

Malacca seaway is 805 Km long. It is today considered the most important trading and military center. You can easily guess its importance by a single oil product that around 18 million barrel oil pass through it daily. It would be worth mentioning here that now another island Singapore has gained much trading and military importance on this seaway. Its seaport lies before Singapore.

More than 10 million ships pass through Malacca Strait yearly and more than 1/3 of the trading goods of the world pass through this Strait. America, China, Russia, India, Britain, France and all the nearby countries take care of this Strait, especially American 7th and 6th Sea fleet play an important role in keeping it open, since America is Nuclear Power and have fully ammunition loaded ships and submarines, which remains underwater.

Malacca city have seen the change of ruling nations again and again in the last five centuries. Therefore, besides Muslims Mosques, you can see Churches, and other worship places of Portuguese, Dutch and Britain Style. Similarly, population also consists of many nations, but the majority is of Malay residents who are Muslims, whereas Christian and Sikhs also reside there.

The Malaysian government has taken special care in safeguarding the remains of Portugal, Dutch and Britain so as to make the city more attractive for the tourists, especially for the European tourist. That’s why European tourists are seen here and there visiting the city happily.

Perhaps the most attractive thing in the tourist industry can be that there would be something present for the foreigners that could help them bringing close to their civilization. That’s why the Muslims countries who have kept the ancient reminiscences safe are earning pounds, dollars, Euros and Yen from them and making their countries prosperous. If the Nation has confidence, the old remains cannot harm its identity. These old remains are the gateway of the history and even if destroyed, they will remain safe in the books.

Malacca is a small city. The most interesting center of it is an old castle named “A’ Famosa”. It is a reminiscence of Portuguese age. Seemingly it depicts the Western Civilization, but people who are aware of the construction art, can see the glimpse of Spanish Muslims art in it as well. Malacca city is situated on both sides of the River Malacca. There is so wonderful panorama of old and new buildings that cannot be found elsewhere in Far East or South East Asia. That’s why UNESCO titled it as “The Great Work of Global Heritage”. Another wonderful thing is that all the people of different nations and religions are living there very peacefully. Any type of anarchy is extinct here. A’ Famosa castle might remained the center of war sometime in the past but today it is the most attractive place for the world’s tourists, because all kinds of facilities like Hotels and Theaters etc. are present here under one roof.

Turning of military castles into economic castles is common in today’s world. It is common in Europe as well. This custom has been adopted my many developed Muslim countries that has opened the gates of employment and earning foreign exchange. These castles are also a wonderful source of bringing coordination and harmony among nations. But, unfortunately, weak, frightened and nervous nations think it their great feat destroying such type of castles and others alike ancient reminiscences.

Alfonso de Albuquerque, after collecting treasures and wealth from Malacca returned back to Goa. The name of the ship he was traveling in was “Flor Do Mar”, which sank in the Indian Ocean due to heavy storm with all his wealth and treasures. The model of this ship has been kept at one of the crossings of Malacca so that every visitor must see and take advice from it.

Malacca city has a great contribution in spreading Islam in the Far East, since Muslims traders and merchants from India and other Muslim countries came there for trading purposes and also brought their civilization and religion with them. Great number of Malaya people accepted Islam in 1500.

Although it was ruled most of the time by Portuguese, Dutch and Britain but the majority is of Muslims. Islam spread to all over Malaysia from there and the ancient Mosques are witnessing about it even today.

The Malacca beach is unique in its beauty and tidiness. Blue sea is seen just in front, the bright sand and high cleanliness makes the beach captivating. Its beach has now gone farther from the sea as land has been taken to make room for the inhabitants, but the natural beauty of the beach has not been reduced even an inch.

The same strong wet winds of the age of Marco polo give visitors a new feel of freshness. These winds are blowing from America, Japan, Australia, China or Indian Ocean. Really a small city of Malacca and its Strait that joins many parts of the world is now among one of the wonders of Nature.

11 rules that can keep you happy provided you practice them

Life is very beautiful and it is also a fact that it is mortal then why shouldn’t we make it simple, face the hardships smilingly, since only we have to solve our problems. In order to solve your problems sensibly, it is important that your mind must be at peace and for that peace of mind it is important to live happily.

Living peacefully and happily is not typical. You only need to make some rules in your life and practice them. In this way you can keep yourself happy and distribute happiness among others as well. Just practice the following rules and see what happens!

Rule No. 1

First of all always be hopeful. Despair is a sin and it embarrasses the person more. Therefore, try to look at the bright side of every matter and be hopeful for success. If you are not succeeding in any matter, then be satisfied in the God’s will for He may want to give you something better than this one.

Rule No. 2

The second important rule is to keep smiling every time. Think how many people will smile seeing your smile. Smiling opens the gates of spirit. When a little child smiles, you can see smile on everybody’s face and you feel unique internal gladness that cannot be given any name. Smile also keeps the body healthy and you know soul cannot be separated from body except after death. Therefore, smile and let others smile as well.

Rule No. 3

The third rule is never breaking anybody’s heart because if you break other’s heart, you will also feel pain. It is said that there is a reaction of every action. When you curse others, you also feel recklessness internally. This recklessness serves the purpose of dam in front of your happiness. Always remember, who do not respect others, people do not respect him too. Therefore, be obliged to other’s people love and faithfulness. Forgive others’ short-comings whole heartedly. Remember, forgiving whole heartedly means, forgetting displeasure incidents in a way as they never occurred before. It is difficult but not impossible.

Rule No. 4

Fourth rule is passing your time with your friends and relatives. Meet each other and share gifts, but remember always admiring other’s gifts, because the love of giver is also included in it and people who reject other’s love remain emptied from love themselves.

Rule No. 5

Fifth rule is describing your happiness. If you get any success or any of your desire fulfills, express it with an open heart, but not in a way that other’s feel jealousy. Thank your God and if anybody else has got any happiness, pray that God may prolong his happiness. When anybody prays for others, the same pray become blessing in his favor as well.

Rule No. 6

Sixth rule is your relation with your Creator and that is very much important one. Strengthen your relation with your God. Worship Him and share all of your heart feelings with Him. It is only God, in front of whom; we can open our heart’s secrets without any fear. Do virtuous deeds and also invite others. Your virtuous deeds should be of a kind that can benefit majority of people.

Rule No. 7

Seventh rule is learning from your environment because knowledge is that treasure that keeps on increasing and it does not get any harm from the ups and downs of the circumstances. It is not necessary that you always use books for gaining knowledge. Learn from Newspapers, Magazines, T.V. Internet and from incident that are taking place around you. Try to learn from the experience of elders, since they have already seen and understood the world more than us.

Rule No. 8

Eighth rule is helping others. Believe me, you will feel happiness that can neither be expressed in words nor can be valued. Helping some blind person cross the road, leading to the right path, helping the poor, guiding the sinful person will surely give you happiness.

Rule No. 9

Ninth rule is very important. Choose words sensibly in your speech because the wavering of tongue is more dangerous than the wavering of feet. Making the cheek red by slapping will disappear after sometime, but the slap on the heart sometimes cost much. Therefore, choose words thoughtfully in your talks. Whatever difficulties and problems we are facing in the world now most of them are the result of this tongue alone. Speak politely, you will receive politeness in return and if you speak bitter, the opponent will also utter bitterness.

Rule No.10

Tenth rule is giving room to truth in your life. Speak truth and support truth. If you want to punish anybody, keep speaking truth with him. Don’t find faults or criticize others because when you criticize, you yourself give an opportunity to others to raise finger on you. Remember, when you raise you finger on anybody, the remaining four fingers points towards you.

Rule No. 11

Eleventh rule is taking care of your health. Do light exercises daily. Your most of the brain and body tension is released by exercising and you will feel relaxed.

Happiness is present inside a person. Setting of few rules can make your life simple and more attractive. Before applying these rules, remember, come what may, you have to adopt these rules and then success will be yours destiny.

A 250kg man who fell through his lounge room floor has sued the NSW Department of Housing.

Wayne Douglas told the Human Rights Commission that the department had failed to give him a house suitable for his weight, The Daily Telegraph reported.

When the commission terminated the case he went to the Federal Magistrates Court which heard evidence that the home had termite damage and, when a carer moved a couch so Mr Douglas could sweep the floor, he fell through to the ground below in November 2006.

Last night Mr Douglas told The Daily Telegraph that he suffered severe leg injuries and blood clots from the fall.

He said his weight had increased to 300kg after the fall but that he had since lost weight and was starting a new career as a rapper.

The court found Mr Douglas was free to refuse the property and apply for alternative residential tenancies but his case was dismissed.

Explanation to why we yawn.

THE TRUTH IS that nobody completely understands why people, or even animals for that matter, yawn.

It is assumed that we yawn out of boredom or because we are tired. However, there isn’t really any evidence to suggest these beliefs.

Scientists are no where close to knowing all of the biological mechanisms attributed to the yawn, but they all usually tend to agree that yawning is an involuntary respiratory reflex, which serves to regulate the carbon-dioxide and oxygen levels in our blood.

A yawn is technically the reflex opening of the mouth which is then followed by the deep inhalation and then the slow exhalation of oxygen.

The act of yawning is but one of a large number of involuntary reflexes that are controlled by the spinal and nerve centers.

Scientists theorize that the onrush of a yawn is sparked either by exhaustion and fatigue, or by sheer boredom as, at those very times, breathing is usually flat and shallow, and little oxygen is being carried to the lungs by the cardiovascular system.

Whenever one yawns, his/her attentiveness is increased, the sudden intake of oxygen increases the pulse rate, gets rid of carbon dioxide buildup in the bloodstream, and forces the oxygen through blood vessels located in the brain, all this while restoring normal breathing as well as ventilating the lungs.

This is a quite reasonable theory about yawning, but it falls short of explaining many aspects about yawning. Scientists explain away the “contagious” nature of yawning, that is when one person’s yawn incites another person nearby to yawn, is most likely due to the power of suggestion, but scientists are at a loss when attempting to explain why it is that yawning occurs excessively in patients that have lower brain stem damage or patients with multiple sclerosis.

Other mysteries puzzling scientist’s include why individuals with substantial concentrations of oxygen in their blood streams yawn and why it is that unborn fetuses still in the womb yawn, when it’s a clearly well-known fact that fetuses do not intake oxygen into their lungs until after their birth.

Until all of the questions mentioned above are answered, you’d be best not to assume that a person who is yawning in your presence is simply bored silly with what it is that you are saying, or suffers from exhaustion. It is best to simply be pleased that he/she is not bored to death.

Below is my movie review on The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo.

In the past, I have made no secret of my belief that David Fincher is one of the best and most consistently inventive filmmakers working today. To these eyes, he has made at least four unquestioned masterpieces to date (”Seven,” “Fight Club,” “Zodiac” and “The Social Network”) and even lesser works like “The Game” and “Panic Room” are still expertly crafted works that beat the best efforts of most other directors like a gong. Hell, he could announce that his next project was going to be a remake of the old Rick Springfield vehicle “Hard to Hold” and I would be waiting for it with bated breath. And yet, I have to admit that the notion of him directing the English-language adaptation of the international best-seller “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” did not exactly excite me when I first heard about it. For one thing, the idea of him doing another dark drama involving serial killers seemed to be a bit of a step backward, especially since he seemed to be making a definite move away from the genre with such comparatively offbeat recent efforts as “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “The Social Network.” For another thing, the book was already the basis of a very good Swedish-language adaptation that was a hit around the world and made an international star out of newcomer Noomi Rapace–the notion of redoing it again so soon seemed to be almost as pointless as Hollywood taking another celebrated Swedish film, the powerful vampiric coming-of-age drama “Let the Right One In,” and redoing it in a version that, while perfectly serviceable, couldn’t help but pale in comparison with the original. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the Stieg Larsson novel, complete with bizarre murders of a seemingly ritualistic nature, a journalist obsessively investigating a crime that had left the police baffled and a bleak depiction of a world in which the milk of human kindness had long since curdled, already seemed so much like a Fincher project as is that it didn’t seem as though he could possibly bring anything else to the party.

Now that I have seen his version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” I find myself to be oddly of two minds about it. On the one hand, it is an incredibly well-executed thriller that transcends its admittedly pulpy and occasionally ridiculous source material with an extraordinary degree of technical skill and such a sure-handed facility for storytelling that even those who have already experienced this particular tale in its previous incarnations will find themselves gripped with a sense of mounting excitement and dread despite knowing more or less what is in store at every twist and turn. Even more impressively, the darkness of the material has not been tampered with in the hopes of attracting a broader audience that might not necessarily sit for the levels of brutality found in the book–in many ways, this is perhaps one of the bleakest and grimmest films to come out of a major studio in recent memory, certainly among those sporting a nine-figure budget and an equally massive amount spent on promoting it around the world. And yet, despite the obvious filmmaking brilliance on display on every scene, there is still a certain sense that he is making a film that is an exercise in technical finesse and nothing more–the kind of thing that he could presumably pull off in his sleep. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as the results here prove conclusively, but anyone going into it expecting another transcendent work for one of the most gifted directors around may come out of it feeling slightly disappointed with the results.

For those of you who have somehow managed to avoid the previous incarnations of the story, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” begins as crusading journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig) being found guilty of printing libelous statements about a powerful Swedish businessman, a judgement that threatens both his livelihood and that of Millennium, the muck-racking magazine that he works for under (in more ways than one) editor Erika Berger (Robin Wright). While trying to sort out what to do next, Mikael is summoned to the remote estate of another wealthy industrialist, Henirik Vanger (Christopher Plummer), and offered a most intriguing proposal. It seems that four decades earlier, during a gathering of the entire Vanger clan–nearly all of them loathsome monsters in one way or another–his beloved teenaged grand-niece Harriet vanished without a trace and was never seen again. Because no one could approach or leave the estate that day because the single connecting bridge was out of service due to an unrelated accident, it stands to reason that another family member was responsible for her disappearance and to make matters ever more cruel, that person has been tormenting Henrik ever since by sending him pressed flowers on his birthday in the same way that she used to when she was alive. Under the guise of researching and writing his biography, Henrik wants Mikael to use his celebrated deductive skills to research the Vanger clan and all the accumulated evidence in the hopes that he can shed some new light on who killed Harriet. In exchange, Henrik promises to not only pay Mikael handsomely but will also provide him with evidence that will crucify the other businessman once and for all.

With nothing else to do, Mikael agrees and soon finds himself ensconced in a chilly guest house at the Vanger estate and sets about poring through the mountains of evidence and interviewing the other members of the Vanger clan, all of whom give him the cold shoulder to one degree or another except for the quite reasonable Martin (Stellan Skarsgard). Before long, he asks for a research assistant and Vanger’s lawyer recommends the one that they employed to check out Mikael himself before hiring him. This turns out to be Lisbeth Salander (Rooney Mara), a pierced and punked-out antisocial genius computer hacker with a grim backstory of her own. Having been deemed legally incompetent as a child for mysterious reasons, she is still inexplicably under the care of a legal guardian but when he suffers a debilitating stroke, she is placed with Nils Bjurman (Yorick van Wageninsen), a depraved sadist who essentially rapes her in exchange for giving her dribs and drabs from her trust fund. Needless to say, Lisbeth is nobody’s victim and exacts a brutal and satisfying revenge upon Bjurman that allows her some degree of freedom. Eventually, Mikael offers her the job of helping him investigate Harriet’s disappearance and with her astounding computer skills and his old-fashioned legwork, they uncover long-buried secrets that may not only explain her absence but may also point the way to a serial killer that has been working undetected for decades.

The major problem with every version of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is the unavoidable fact that the story itself, especially after a second helping, is kind of a mess–a jumble of third-rate deducting, second-rate contrivance and enough thick slabs of techno-jargon to make even Mchael Crichton roll over in his grave. That said, it was written in a stylish enough manner so that readers could plow through its fairly unspeakable prose without recognizing its basic silliness and the sometimes lumpy screenwriting in the Swedish film version could be written off as the inevitable byproduct of telescoping the novel down to a filmable length and translating it from its native language into English. This time around, the screenplay is in the hands of Steve Zaillian, one of Hollywood’s best writers and one who is not adverse to transforming material that might otherwise seem difficult to transfer to the big screen (as he proved earlier this year with his work with Aaron Sorkin on “Moneyball”), and he is stuck in the unenviable position of working with material that is inherently flawed but which cannot be radically altered without running the risk of angering the book’s millions of fans. While there a couple of tweaks to the narrative here and there, he has, as far as I can recall, stuck fairly close to the previous versions and the occasional clunkiness in the screenplay–such as the extended epilogue that is tagged on the the story and which goes on long after its dramatic climax and dialogue along the lines of “I want you to help me find a killer of women” that sounds like the work of the hackiest pulp novelist imaginable run through Babelfish two or three times–is almost always borne of his faithfulness to the material. On the most basic level, the story does work in a crudely effective manner and still holds up reasonably well, possibly because the twists and turns are so silly and forgettable at times that even veterans of the various versions may have forgotten them over time.

However, if “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” does nothing else, it certainly proves the adage that, as The Who once said so memorably, “It’s the singer, not the song” because while the story as a whole is little more than an amalgam of cliches spiked with bits of raw ugliness, David Fincher and his crew have presented it in such a stylish and engrossing manner that I found myself willing to forgive most of its dramatic faults. From its arresting opening credits, a sequence that is in many ways more thrilling than most full-length movies of recent vintage, to its equally gripping finale, Fincher and his team of top-tier colleagues have put together an absolutely stunning cinematic experience that is never less than compulsively watchable. He keeps things going without every allowing the story to get bogged in the kind of minute details that might have otherwise brought a story like this down and, with cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth, the entire thing is a sumptuous visual experience that contains nary a dull shot yet never overwhelms viewers with flashy or distracting visuals. Reuniting with Fincher after their Oscar-winning collaboration on “The Social Network,” musicians Trent Reznor and Atticus Rose have put together another spellbinding soundtrack that quietly and efficiently adds another level of quiet dread to the proceedings without going overboard as well. Make no mistake about it, if you want an example of what state-of-the-art commercial filmmaking is at its highest level these days, one needs to go no further than this film and in virtually every conceivable category save for one, this version blows the Swedish iteration away, even though that was a perfectly good film in its own right.

In fact, there is only one major category in which the Swedish version trumps Fincher’s but it is certainly a key one–the depiction of Lisbeth Salander, the character who is, when all is said and done, the heart of not just this story but of the entire trilogy to boot. On the page, the character was interesting enough but seemed to be more of an amalgamation of self-consciously “edgy” elements than an actual person–her exploits were entertaining enough but on the grand scale of plausible fictional characters, she ranked somewhere along the same level as Clive Cussler’s immortal Dirk Pitt. However, the producers of the Swedish films had the incredible good fortune to stumble upon Noomi Rapace, a relatively unknown but incredibly charismatic actress who somehow managed to transform a character as unlikely as Lisbeth into a genuinely believable person, one so absolutely compelling that even as the subsequent films drifted away thanks to increasingly ridiculous storylines, she managed to single-handedly keep things more or less on track, at least during the times when she was on the screen. This time around, Fincher has recruited relative newcomer Rooney Mara, best known to most viewers from the opening of “The Social Network,” where she played the soon-to-be ex-girlfriend of Mark Zuckerberg in one of the great break-up scenes in film history, and while she delivers a technically fine performance, she just lacks the palpable force of personality that Rapace brought to the role. When Rapace appeared on the screen, there was a genuine sense of danger and a feeling that anything could potentially happen. With Mara, on the other hand, you get someone who hits their marks properly and everything but whose “edginess” seems to have been borne of fashion magazines than of a real sense of rebellion against the world that has mistreated her for so long. That said, she is good but for a role like this and with the footsteps she is following in, “good” simply isn’t enough. If Rapace is to Lisbeth as Sean Connery is to James Bond, then Mara is closer to Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan–a perfectly decent substitute that will never be mistaken for the real thing anytime soon.

Make no mistake about it–”The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is tremendously entertaining, albeit in the darkest manner possible, and serves as further proof that a crappy book in the hands of a gifted filmmaker can result in a great film (as titles as varied as “Jaws,” “The Godfather” and “The Bridges of Madison County” have demonstrated). Fans of the saga will be relieved to learn that it has survived its latest incarnation virtually intact while newcomers should find themselves sparking to its considerable achievements as well, provided that they aren’t completely put off by the equally considerable levels of violence, sexual brutality and all-around unpleasantness. Most importantly, it once again demonstrates that David Fincher is one of the most compelling filmmakers around today–a man who seems absolutely incapable of making a film that is not interesting or compelling to one degree or another. However, even his most ardent proponents would have to admit that he isn’t really doing anything notable here other than giving the four-star treatment to two-star material. My guess is that if this film is as much of a success as many are predicting, he will no doubt be offered ridiculous amounts of money in order to help the inevitable adaptations of “The Girl who Played with Fire” and “The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.” My hope is that he spits the gold-plated bit and leaves them to others in order to go and do something closer to his heart and head–with so few truly unique cinematic talents working today, why waste several years of the career of one on stuff that we already know he can do when he could be off doing something potentially extraordinary instead?

Are you still pondering and waiting for that perfect chance? Are you wondering if she'll say yes or no? You have to read the body languages!

We’ve all had women in our lives, be it if your 10, or as an adult. I know the feeling of being in a trance, and wondering if she truly likes you. How can you get the girls to like you? By utilizing the attraction of body language.

Well Each young woman is different.

Shy girls: May lower their head, look at you over their eyelashes and get all red in the face. They also become increasingly nervous.
Confident Girls can act in two ways:
One girl can feel confident enough to snuggle up beside you, even poke you with her arm, lean against you, put an arm around you or bluntly tell you how she feels. These young women can often be loud and abrasive and sometimes their actions are misunderstood as cold with an ulterior motive that you may not want to get involved with, but don’t let this type of girl scare you off.
Another confident type of girl takes what she wants and goes for it. Most of the time these gals are out for a good time, nothing too serious and “let’s party” and can be quite shallow personality wise, so be aware.
Then there is the “good old fashion girl” and oh, yes, they are still out there. These girls are looking for a steady guy and serious about being loyal and making an effort at working within their new relationship. They often are between shy and a little outgoing. They can appear hyper one moment and joking around, then grow silent and thoughtful without a moments notice.

If she truly likes you she WILL show you signs and try to make you notice, it’s your job to take notice of these actions and take action yourself!

There are also many things to consider:

If she’s sitting near you and she even if she’s not looking at you, her body or her legs will point to your direction, this is a psychological thing.

Usually if that girl likes you, she will laugh and smile A LOT!

If you happen to be a good friend of her’s, she’ll try to make a customized name for you or even jokes.

The type that’s not shy will always take her chance to be around you, you have to take notice of this.

And last but furmost most important, she will give you the DEATH STARE, if you stare, talk, or do anything with another girl, jealousy is bad but it’s effective.

You have to consider many of these factors to utilize them, before you know it you’ll be in a relationship with her.

A short biography I made about Thomas Edison.

<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } –Young Thomas Edison

Thomas Alva Edison, a walk through time.

Thomas Edison with his phonograph ; 1877

Thomas Alva Edison (more commonly known as Thomas Edison) was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan, Ohio, United States but grew up in Port Huron, Michigan. He was the seventh child of Samuel Ogden Edison, Jr. And Nancy Matthews Elliott. In school, young Edison’s mind often wandered and his teacher called him addled. Much of his education came from reading R.G. Parker’s School of Natural Philosophy. He had some hearing problems at a young age which was caused by a scarlet fever during childhood which left him with an untreated ear infection. In the middle of his career his chemical laboratory in a boxcar caught fire which then he was thrown out of the train for. He sold candy and newspapers on trains, and he sold vegetables to supplement his income. Thanks to this, he gained experience and talents as a businessman with eventually led him to founding 14 companies including one of the largest publicly traded companies in the world; General Electric; which is still in existence.

Thomas Edison 1878

Edison became a telegraph operator after saving 3 year-old Jimmie MacKenzie from being stuck by a runaway train which then led Jimmie’s father to training Edison as a telegraph operator. He was working the night shift when working with a lead-acid battery when he spilled sulfuric acid onto the floor, he was fired the next day. Thomas Edison began his career as an inventor, but the invention which first gained him notice was the phonograph. This accomplishment made the public thought even magical. However, it had poor sound quality and the recordings could only be played a few times. He gained money for his inventions through selling them hoping to get $4000 – $5000, in which he got $10000.

It is a common misconception to say that Thomas Edison invented the first electric light bulb, but instead invented the first commercially practical incandescent light. By 1879, Thomas Edison produced a new concept which was a high resistance lamp in a very high vacuum which would burn for hundreds of hours. He first tried many experiment with platinum and other metal filaments but returned to a carbon filament. In 1878, Edison formed the Edison Electric Light Company, and made the first public demonstration of incandescent light bulb on December 31, 1879, in Menlo Park. He even said that “We will make electricity so cheap that only the rich will burn candles”.

Thomas Edison 1889

On October 8, 1883, the US patent office said that Edison’s patent was based on the work of William Sawyer and was therefore invalid, but until October 6, 1889, a judge ruled that Edison’s electric light improvement claim for “a filament of carbon of high resistance” was valid. He did not want another court battle with Joseph Swan, whose British patent had been awarded a year before Edison’s, he decided to form a joint company called Ediswan to manufacture and market the invention in Britain.

With knowledge that he gained from working as a telegraph operator, he learned the basics electricity. This made him able to make his early fortune with the stock ticker which was the first electricity-based broadcast system. He was also granted a patent for the motion picture camera or “Kinetograph”. In 1891, Thomas Edison built a Kinetoscope, or peep-hole viewer and this device was installed in arcades which people could watch short, simple films. His favorite movie was The Birth of a Nation which is one of the most racist movies ever created, and it was produced by the Ku Klux Klan. President Woodrow Wilson also favorited this movie.

Thomas Edison died of complications of diabetes on October 18, 1931, in his home, “Glenmont” which was in Llewellyn Park in West Orange, New Jersey, which he purchased in 1886 as a wedding gift for his wife Mina. He is buried behind his home. Edison’s last breath is contained in a test tube at the Henry Ford Museum. Ford reportedly convinced Charles Edison to seal a test tube of air in Thomas Edison’s room shortly after his death. A plaster death mask was also made.

He died on October 18, 1931 in West Orange, New Jersey, United States.

The title says it all, my friend. :)

Okay so, where should I start? Okay, My name is Danielle. I’m 20 years old and I think I’m a pretty interesting person even though I live a fairly normal life.

I’m not going to tell you my favorite color, because I don’t have one.

I’ll start right off and tell you that I am nowhere close to a literary genius but I did buy two fish between today and yesterday. They don’t have names though, maybe someone can help me with that?

Chameleons are pretty amazing. I saw one today and he really freaked my out a little bit. I’d never own one because they are difficult to care for, but I am thinking about buying a chinchilla. They’re actually more of a common pet then I thought.

Please don’t let me fall asleep at this keyboard; it’s been a long day. Don’t even get me started.

Nice meeting you, by the way. I guess you’ll learn more about me along the way.
