Abortions in Wisconsin dropped 9% between 2009 in 2010, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

The statistics are in for the number of abortions in Wisconsin, and they reveal that abortions have dropped by 9% throughout the state. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, there were 8542 abortions in 2009 and only 7825 in 2010.

There are many possible reasons for this decline. Pro-choice activists usually credit reductions in abortions to increases in the use of birth control. This may indeed account for some lower numbers, as fewer unplanned pregnancies obviously leads to fewer abortions. However, the high visibility of pro-life activists as well as the Internet may also be a factor. Because of the Internet, many people have seen pictures of unborn babies at different stages of development and pictures of aborted babies. These pictures as well as other pro-life information may be swaying more people towards the pro-life position – or least encouraging them to choose life when they become pregnant or have a partner who becomes pregnant.

Whatever the reason for the drop in abortions, it is a cause for celebration. Even many of the most extreme pro-choice activists admit that abortion is a necessary evil, an unfortunate event that should be avoided if possible. Therefore, anyone but the most hardened pro-abortion activist should feel that these numbers represent an encouraging trend in the state of Wisconsin.

What is the Baby Killer?

                                           The Baby Killer

Salutations my friend! Truly the birth of a child is breathtaking! The cycle of life has just begun, prepare little one, as you embark on your quest to face the human world! But wait, what happens if you did not survive birth? What if you died inside your mother’s womb from a foreign object? How upsetting it is that another person has become a victim of abortion. Statistics has shown that the Philippines abortion rate was among the world’s highest in 2007! Should we not be honoured by this? It is estimated that one (1) out of four (4) pregnancies ends up in abortion. In Metro Manila it has been reported that seventeen percent of women undergo induced abortion due to an unwanted pregnancy. Above all this, what exactly is abortion? Abortion is the intentional termination of a pregnancy after fertilisation, or commonly called conception. It allows the hosts to put an end to their pregnancies, in exchange for the life of the underdeveloped embryo. The first record of abortion came from a Chinese text, which records inhuman abortions performed between the years of 500BC and 515 BC. According to ancient Chinese history , the well-known Emperor Shennong approved the use of mercury to attempt successful abortions. Abortions were also famous in the archaic Greco-Roman world. Various methods of abortions were used. Some of the most common methods were either giving large doses of near-fatal poison to the pregnant woman, so that a miscarriage would occur, or prodding the uterus with different kinds of “long needles, hooks, and knives.” Surely many of the techniques done in olden days were non-surgical. Physical activities like strenuous labour, climbing, paddling, weightlifting, or even diving were a common technique. The other alternatives were the use of irritant leaves, fasting, pouring hot water onto the abdomen, and even lying on a heated coconut shell! Oh how odd, people had those procedures before!

Abortion has always been a popular topic for debates and therefore mandatory that we are to discuss it properly, because it is happening around us. There was a widespread news in the Philippines about a church that gives “miracles” to pregnant women. Quiapo Church provides a solution for unwanted pregnancy. Every day, many pregnant women goes to this church not only to pray, but to buy abortion drugs from the dozen of stalls that surrounds it. A 58-year old vendor said this, “You could say we provide instant miracles to women.” This has to be one of the tragic, abhorrent facts about the Philippines and happening. If we truly care about other people, then we must understand what is going on. Ideally, pregnancy is wanted and is a glorious event for parents, especially the mother. Unfortunately as you can see, this is not always so. Around the world, millions of women every year face this tragic accident –unwanted pregnancy. They are forced to choose the fate of the person inside them, to either let the baby live, and ruin their lives, or to let the baby die, and pretend that nothing has ever happened. Although in America, they have made abortion legal, if it has been performed in the third trimester. Yeah, you can say that it’s legal, but the embryo that is inside the woman’s body has been considered “alive”. Killing the embryo through abortion is the same as murder, because that embryo is actually a person. Surprisingly, there are quite a lot of verses in the Bible that talks about abortion. One of them is Job 31:15 and is says “Did not he who made me in the womb make them? Did not the same one form us both within our mothers?” You might also say it’s my own body, I make the choices not you! Sure you do, but is your conscience cleared? Are you not guilty for taking away that person’s life? Are you not accountable to God for what you have done? It is quite obvious to say that abortion is wrong if you are bothered after the “operation”. Taking away someone’s life for your own self is harsh isn’t it? What has that person done to you that gave you the desire to kill him? To say that you have possibly killed your own child! Isn’t that a shock? Congratulations, you are now on your path on becoming a baby killer! And after that, you can share your wonderful testimony to the whole world on how wonderful it is to have an abortion!

Speculating from this, we can see that God abhors abortion, because it’s murder. The act of abortion itself is made from your own selfish desires. Your egocentric desires had defiled you against the Lord, an abomination in the society. We should never implicate others, because of our mistakes. As a Christian nation, we should actually be the ones to show that Jesus Christ lives within us, and not the other side around. Remember abortion is not the “baby killer”, it’s the person who chooses to do abortion with or without the consent of the law. God bless you all, and to God be the Glory!

If we talk about Asian countries everything is moving in positive direction except for the treatment of society towards girls. Ratio of girls: boys is declining at continuous speed which is alarming the existence of humanity.

Girl- a synonym of love, dedication, sacrifice and life is still underprivileged in most of the countries especially Asian countries. In most of the countries Girl is considered as a synonym of Goddess. Isn’t this a reason fair enough to be proud of being a female? Still then why we have to witness so many cases of aborting female feticides are coming up? We usually blame doctors and parents for such social crimes but do you really believe that they are the main culprits behind this disgraceful crime.

No doubt the doctors and parents are culprits but as far as I think it is the society which is making them culprit. With number of cases related to dowry and rapes increasing daily, parents feel the responsibility of nurturing a girl too high as compared to that of nurturing a boy. In addition to it they believe that whatever amount is spend on brining up a boy is a form of investment which yields return at the time of marriage. This truth can only be converted into myth if we (all girls and boys) strictly say no to dowry.

Marriage is a union of two souls who unite together for rest of their life. They stand by each other during all the low and high facets of life. Then how can such a pure and divine union be measured on terms of price. It’s the trust, understanding and love that lay the foundation of this new relation and people try to replace these emotions with money. But they forget that if foundation is faulty then no building can stand on it. Marriages fixed with money don’t last longer and finally leads to divorces.

It is high time for all of us to raise our voice against the abuses and crimes happening against girls. NGO’s are working along with entertainment channels for checking the increasing number of female feticides abortions. Still there are ample of things that need to be done in this regard. Right from her birth till her death a girl fights innumerable number of fights. Firstly, for her birth a girl needs to persuade her parents for allowing her to come in this world. Then immediately after birth, girls start fighting for her survival.

Worshipping girls on one hand and abusing them on other will not lead the world to peace and prosperity. Females are next to God as only these two have the capability of creating life. This life can further be of a male or female. Why should the question being male or female be so important? Instead the thing which should matter is the health of mother and baby.

I strongly oppose the people involved in killing of female feticides but more than that I oppose people who are responsible for making life of these females a living hell. These people are usually very near to females for e.g. husband, in-laws as well as parents.

Going for ultrasounds and killing of female feticides will not only lead to decrease in ratio of boy: girl but will end up with end of humanity but does this mean that the girl should merely be survived for just carrying on humanity from one generation to another. She doesn’t have any life, dreams, feelings, ambitions of her own.

Cancelling the license of maternity homes carrying out illegal abortions will not bring in much good instead it is the mental set up that needs to be altered. In most of the conservative families females especially mother have little or no scope of influencing the decision. Instead it is her in-laws and husband who decide on her behalf. Ceasing one maternity home will give birth to next one and the chain will continue forever.

The only solution for the problem is to make the life of a female worth living by controlling the eve teasing, rape and dowry incidents. If males and females are looked with similar eyes it will bridge up the gap between the two genders and hence the cases of illegal abortions will itself slow down.

Motherhood is a blessing enjoyed by most women. However some mothers have to go through the painstaking and traumatizing phase of terminating the pregnancy. Have a look at why women abort their child and what the age group of mothers aborting their child is. The issue of abortion is one that must be addressed promptly.

Pregnancy in itself is a very emotional time for a woman but terminating that pregnancy knowingly can cause a woman to suffer in ways that only they can imagine. Abortion although has been made legal in many countries like USA, is still considered a sin in most if not all religions.

Pregnancy – Terminating The Child

Knowing this and still attempting to kill her own baby causes a woman to feel overwhelming emotions at once. Guilt, regret, anger, frustration, loneliness and helplessness are only a few emotions that she has to go through. Guilt because deep down in her heart she knows this wasn’t the only option.

Regret & Grief – Emotions Inside A Woman

Regret because of all the possibilities the baby could have brought. Studies show that many women under the pressure of a recent abortion are driven to extreme measures and might commit suicide. Women suffer from depression, trauma and eating disorders.

Why Abortion Is Done – Psychological Effects

The decision to abort a child is usually made in extreme pressure or when there seems to be no way out. The parents seem to forget that adoption is better than abortion and can help both sides. Couples who are unable to have children often see adoption as the only way to start families. There are many companies that work towards connecting the two families. Thus adoption became a way of avoiding desperate measures like abortion.

Abortion – Young Women Who Are A Victim

Often the cause of abortion can be that the mothers to be are young and unmarried. Not ready to take on responsibility of a family and unwilling to go through the torture of pregnancy they prefer aborting the child before it influences their lives any further.

The Popular Trends – Mothers Which Abort Their Child

Surveys show that most women who got an abortion were around the ages 15-19. Most abortions terminate ‘accidental’ pregnancy. Some couples have an abortion because of gender determination. In such cases abortion becomes illegal. Other couples have an abortion due to financial and marital problems.

Confused Emotions – Life After Abortion

Although immediate reaction after a wanted abortion is relief, time leads to other emotions floating on the surface. Guilt and pain come rushing back and a feeling of loss is created. Such women often want to get pregnant as quickly as possible. They hope to replace their loss with a new baby. Such couples often experience problems in their marriage.

Traumatizing Experience For A Woman

Women also start to feel themselves guilty from a religious view and thus try and repress their feelings and hide them from the world. They think that if they pretend to the world that they are okay the pain might stop. Avoiding pain leads to avoiding people in general. Seeing people opens their wounds again. And they retreat into their own shells. Personality changes are very common in women who just had an abortion.

Career Choices – Looking Towards Adoption

Women might also decide to base their career choices on their experience. Advocates for adoption, consultants or therapists for couples considering adoptions might just be looking for ways to end or lessen their grief. Women who run companies that organize adoption might just be looking for ways to convince other women that abortion is not the only answer.

The Abortion Aftermath

God created life and gave it natural beauty. Those who destroy the natural life are often met with punishment. Destroying of trees and killing of wildlife are small acts that are frowned upon. But the murder of a living human being is considered to be the most evil act there is. After that there is no coming back. Then why the murder of a baby, though not yet in the world but breathing, is an act that is considered normal.

These are the psychological conditions caused after terminating a pregnancy and how women are affected by it.

Does it not worry or at least tickle anyone on why we should rejoice when a warlord kills a rebel.
Is it not the blood of just another killer?

“Oh to shame we put the WAR-MONGERS, and the course of FREEDOM and JUSTICE we uphold even as the VOICES of its activists are put to DEATH.”. To a man who stood tall against the world’s biggest body of TERRORISM, “I LAY THIS TRIBUTE”.. To prelude the presentation of this part of my tribute, I would like to RE-EMPHASIZE that per the actions of OSAMA BIN LADEN for the past decade and beyond, He could be called a Terrorist and so deserving of HUNTING…. YES. Today, all America is clown in JOYOUS moods with warm ‘IN GOD WE TRUST’ smiles across their faces. Why ? They have finally been woken up from the DEADLIEST nightmare they will ever dream of again(maybe), OSAMA IS DEAD,.. But as England national team defender, Rio Ferdinand puts it ” OSAMA IS DEAD, SO WHAT NEXT ?”. Is this REALLY the end/ beginning of the end of acts of world terrorism??? . This the next question that comes to mind in the wake of this news, “Osama is dead” and i MAY need your help to figure it out.. Nevertheless, I beg to differ but i think the answer is NO!!!. These recent activities have rather led me to appreciate more, the BIBLICAL saying ” CAST THE FIRST STONE, YE THAT IS SINLESS “. Over the past decade and beyond, has anyone taken a break from the ” OSAMA HUNTING MANIA” to ask why all this ‘OSAMACTIVITIES’ ?? .. Has anyone paused to ask if Osama is the only DANGEROUS terrorist to be revealled and hence deserving hunting??? In the recent past few years, JOHN STOCKWELL, the highest ranking CIA official to ever leave the agency and go public after 13 years of service, Revealled the world’s MOST dangerous terrorist, The CIA (America)… In his realease, he revealled how the CIA has engaged in over 100 coverts and wars each year since their 37 years of existence (by then) and how over 6 million people died during his reign as TASK FORCE COMMANDER during America’s Third World War against Third World Countries like Africa.. By our actions today ( hailing America), are we ATTEMPTING to substitute(turn a blind eye to) America’s MUDDY BLOOD SPILLAGE in Angola, Vietnam, Elsalvador, Nicaragua, Korea, Bujumbura, Burundi and the Central American wars with the rather UNFORTUNATE 10 ,000 or so victims of Osama’s terrorist actions?… Does anyone remember the contribution of CIA case officer LARRY DEVLIN and the CIA in the overthrow of the then Congo President PATRICE LUMUMBA and his subsequent killing in 1960 ?,. What about other African Leaders like NKRUMAH ??.. Does not these few happenings alone (many others unmentioned) put into CONTEST america’s right to TRUMPET Osama Bin Laden’s ‘MINI’ terrorist activities compaired to theirs ?? (LET THE SINLESS CAST THE FIRST STONE INDEED)… Or does this right stern from the fact that American Civilians were the most sufferers of Osama’s INFLICTED PLIGHT ?? If SO, then where does this put the millions of civillians who died in Congo, Burundi, Bujumbura, Vietnam, and other America KILL ZONES ?? Will a ‘WAR AGAINST TERRORISM’ from Africa and other victims of America’s terror also be HAILED as we do today?? It is TERRORISTIC to fight for Religious, Political, Economical or Ideological goals with DELIBERATE neglect for Civillian safety, and this is what Osama Bin Laden did… What about America ??? Did they not fight their wars just to simply and fooshly “PROTECT AMERICAN VALUES and to save the world for AMERICA’S BRAND OF DEMOCRACY “? (John Stockwell’s account)…. Did they not wage wars to distabilise DEOMCRATICALLY elected governments to pave way for the institution of their (America) self tailored MILITARY governments?? (John Stockwell)… Were these acts of HUMANITARIANISM?? Were those highlights of America’s ‘TRUST IN GOD’? If ever, all these AGGRESIVE and INHUMAN acts do not match up to Terrorism (If Osama terrorist), Then what about the over 47 ,147 ,000 INNOCENT American foetuses (humans) who have died since 1973 (when the supreme court in the case of Roe Vs Wade declared most existing state abortion laws unconstitutional – Thereby making abortion LEGAL) to 2006 . (app. 3500 foetuses per day-Even more than the victims of the 9/11 Osama incidence)- (AGI figures) .. What are these acts of America called ?? Who are the REAL terrorists we should be Hunting ?? Before YOU CONCLUDE this note of tribute by saying ‘This guy does not know what is going on’, I would like to remind you that those were the words of the then American President Reagan (literally the same) whenever the ESSENSE of America’s wars was brought to question… Now that the Osama- terrorism MAY be gone, the next question that comes to mind is “What does America bring to the table in the Quest to END world terrorism” ? Is it the promise of a BIGGER BODY of terrorism (CIA / AMERICA) or a plan to get us all to bow and pledge alligience to an American BRAND of Democracy ?? Under NO circumstance will i praise any act of terror (terrorism), And that is a MORE reason why i will Not PRETEND to be HAPPY when a ” WARLORD KILLS A REBEL SOLDIER “. Time will DEFINATLY Tell.. . (YOU CAN READ JOHN STOCKWELL’S FULL STATEMENT @ www. informationclearin article4068 .htm ) (Gorleku Victor)

Ever heard of the saying “out of the frying pan into the fire;” Well that’s exactly where the American Government placed the American people. Printing more money they don’t have is unwise but what’s happening.

While the Republicans attempt to get the government spending down the Democrats scream foul. The American Government is Trillions of Dollars in the red and the Democrats are satisfied with cutting the budget by merely $38.5 Billion; and just where do you think the money is coming from for the “Stop-gap” they are using?

As the Democrats ponder and humdrum their way to the weekend of fun the Republicans shake their heads and the rest of America watch the stupidity of a government out of control. What was the hold up in cutting the budget even further? Believe it or not it was apparently two things; the Obama care and abortion issues.

Five years ago someone asked me on the street if I wanted a more affordable medical institution and I had unwittingly said yes. If I had known it would have entailed government involvement, more government spending and taking away people’s choices I most definitely would have said no. I am now saying NO to Obama care. The American people can’t afford it and the American Government certainly can’t afford it.

As for abortions; I’m against it and would have suggested having the child and giving the infant over for adoption; how ever with Children’s Services also as out of control as it’s government sponsor I would simply say let it be the choice of each individual. Why you ask?

Children Services were put into place to insure that all children attended schools and not be among the labor forces until they were of age to do so. Since then the Children services have made it their goal to destroy every family unit they deem unsuitable. They will not come straight out and tell you what they deem unsuitable and they will lie even under oath to obtain their objective if they have no proof.

I have seen parents in courtrooms in California whose only problem is that they were poor or disabled or have given up one child as a teen and Children services had taken every subsequent child born of that woman thereafter. Since when is it a crime to be disabled and have children? Since when is it a crime to be poor and have children? Since when does one person decide that another is not a good mother because she had done what she thought was the right thing for her child as a teen? Yes Children Services like its parent the American Government have grossly overstepped their boundaries.

So it is with great regret that I must say for the greater good of humanity in general that each individual should be allowed to choose whether to obtain an abortion or not until Children Services can be brought under control. I guarantee you that at least in San Bernardino County California no child taken by them will be placed into any Christian homes. Furthermore if you are a Christian in San Bernardino County you are most likely the ones to loose your children unless you are “in their system.”

In San Bernardino California like many other states and counties, if the parent (s) is in a drug or alcohol program and poor they stand a 90% chance of getting their children returned regardless of what the parents put their children through after the fact; so long as they don’t proclaim Christianity.

I have witnessed the Children Services calling those parents as much as 48 hours in advance of a house check. Also if any parent shows any resentment of government intrusion into their private home and lives the Children Services will jump at the chance to take your children away the very next visit they make or soon thereafter and God help you if you are just barely getting by financially; they will attempt to destroy you.

I would be among the first to say the entire system is broken in America, yet for the sake of those that can’t afford to do without I would not see it shut down. I would like to see significant changes being made though; such as the Government shouldn’t be meddling in people’s private lives. The Government shouldn’t be meddling with medical care except maybe for the elderly and it certainly shouldn’t be printing more money.

The more money the American Government prints the lower the American dollar becomes. What the American Government needs to do is to bring in more work for its people. No government can make money if its people don’t produce.

So if you think its over you are sadly mistaken; it has only just begun.

May be just my opinion, but I am usually right..

HECK NO! Then they will see how much money they would be saving if they either had less “congress” or paid less. And maybe our country wouldn’t be BROKE!

This government shut down isn’t going to just hurt us poor people that are already struggling to make ends meet, or the soldiers fighting to keep our country safe, it’s also going to be hurting the rich guys because they will end up losing out on a lot of money as well. We’ll all be homeless, but they won’t be able to afford their maids anymore!!!

I have not seen one American posting anywhere in the last 2 days that support this stupidity. Everyone says to keep the troops paid, and dock the pay of congress. Apparently Congress wants to take away welfare, healthcare, and planned parenting to make up the budget. The planned parenting can go in my opinion. But there are too many families on welfare because they HAVE to be, not because they want to be. They need to stop screwing around, donate the money they have in one of their 8 accounts to the United States, and be done with the bull!

I agree completely on the part where birth control being covered by our insurance should be an option for women. But I do no think that abortions should be used as birth control. Simply put, if you are practicing sexual behavior, expect to get pregnant. If you don’t want to get pregnant, do like my Mom and Grandma used to say, put an Aspirin between your knees and hold it there for a few years. And I’m sorry, I know a lot of people feel very strongly opposite to me, but I was almost an abortion. I don’t agree with women killing babies. No matter the reason. There are women out there that can’t have children and wouldn’t care that the child is a rape baby, because it becomes their baby. As for having one because they are children themselves, if they are too young to giver birth, they are too young to be having sex. In which case, they screwed up, so they should deal with the consequences. And if you have an abortion because it interferes with you future, then maybe yuh shouldn’t be spreading your legs in the first place. I wasn’t supposed to be able to get pregnant, and I did. I wasn’t supposed to live through the birthing and I did. So if a woman dies during birth, it was meant to be… No matter the religion. Why kill a baby to make your life happier. It’s not any different then the 42 year old man killing his 76 year old mother because she used him, and beat him and treated him like he was 12. Murder is murder. ~Sorry, touchy subject~

The Republicans are up in arms about Planned Parenthood. If it's the budget they're thinking about, this isn't the way to save money. Doing away with Title X will put more mothers and babies in jeopardy, cause more abortions and bring more unwanted babies to poor parents who are not able to take care of them. With all the new life we are creating, food and water will run out in a few hundred years. We need Planned Parenthood now more than ever.

Republicans and Planned Parenthood

What could the Republicans have against Planned Parenthood. The world is becoming overpopulated. If the birth rate continues we eventually will not have food and water to sustain human life. Abortion accounts for about 3 percent of Planned Parenthood’s services. Family planning, immunizations, screening for cancer and sexually transmitted disease accounts for 97 percent of their budget. Losing this service will mean more women dying from these diseases. The GOP bill would not only cut Planned Parenthood, but it kills the 1970 law “Title X” which provides family planning for nearly 5 million women every year at 4,600 health centers across the U.S.

The Guttmacher Institute report says that for every dollar invested in Title X for contraceptive care, $4 is saved in Medicaid costs for mother and baby in just the first year. Title X also prevents over a million pregnancy’s a year, many which would end in abortion. If pro lifers get Title X killed they can hold themselves responsible for the increased abortion rates and the children who will be born to poor parents who cannot take care of them.

The GOP would also kill funds for prenatal care and cut out $70 million of nutrition funds for mothers and babies. If that isn’t enough, the GOP is also going after community health centers. Pro lifers are working for this bill at great costs. They are putting women’s lives on the line. Not that the Dems and Independents will let them get away with it.

Planned Parenthood’s annual budget is about $1.1 billion. About one third of it comes from federal, state, and local government. Government funds cannot be used for abortions. But pro lifers hold to their view that any support of Planned Parenthood contributes to abortion. They don’t mention all the lives of mothers, children and families that are saved by this program.

The debate over abortion is one of the most controversial topics in the US today.

What are the issues?

In this debate, the rights of the mother are pitted against the rights of the fetus. TTwo conflicting stances are the “pro-choice” and the “pro-life” positions. These vastly differing viewpoints revolve round legal as well as moral considerations. There is another more pragmatist view, more blended, that says abortions should be prohibited, with exceptions made for specific cases.

The advocates of the “Pro-choice” stand emphasize the woman’s right to decide whether she will terminate her pregnancy or not and when it should be done. According to this view, a woman should be allowed to have total control over her body and by extension of this, over the continuation or not of the fetus within her body.

According to the “Pro-life” advocates, life begins at the time of conception, and termination of the pregnancy after the embryo has been formed is considered murder.

Supreme Court ruling

An underlying, significant legal debate is raging in the US. There was a landmark Supreme Court ruling over Roe v. Wade in 1973, which continues to be relevant to this day. The Court had voted 7-2 and overturned the state laws that banned abortion. The Justices had concluded that those laws violated woman’s constitutional right over privacy. After this judgment, the moral debate took on political implications.

Other viewpoints

There are other viewpoints on the issue besides the “pro life” and “pro choice” positions. For instance, there are some pro choice supporters who believe that abortions later than the second trimester are not morally permissible. In the same way, some pro-life supporters think abortions should be allowed in extreme cases such as incest or rape. Approximately, 2% of pregnancies are result of those atrocities.

But the debate over abortion brings to the forefront a much bigger question: When should the government intervene in the personal lives of citizens, and when should it avoid such intervention?

Issues within the Bigger Debate

Within the larger debate, the two other pressing questions are should ‘partial birth’ abortions become legal, and should first trimester abortions be allowed to remain legal? ‘Partial birth’ refers to the procedure in which the intact fetus is surgically removed from the uterus through the cervix, with the help of the ‘intact dilation & extraction’ process.

In the mid 1990’s, the Republicans had introduced legislations which banned ‘partial birth’ abortions. In 2003, President George Bush signed the ‘Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act’ which had been passed by the Congress.

The ‘partial birth’ abortion law had been held unconstitutional by the Supreme Court because it withheld a doctor from conducting the procedure even when it was the only method available to preserve the health (or life) of the mother.

In 2004, the US District Court Judge ruled against the federal statute, on one of the grounds that the law did not have provisions required for preserving a woman’s health. It is now expected that the case will be appealed to in the Supreme Court.

In 2007 Carhart vs. Gonzales was decided by the Supreme Court which states that performing a partial birth abortion is illegal. Due to the inhumane way that the procedure takes place was the reason for the outlawing of the procedure, in which it was declared that the Dilatation and Evacuation (D&E) procedure though it consists of removing tissue and limbs of the fetus from inside the uterus more acceptable though there was data presented that showed that the D&X was safer than the D&E procedure to the mother. Clearly the Supreme Court was concerned more of protection of the fetus than maternal safety.

Late term abortions are abhorrent to most people. And late term abortionist are not popular with the public. This doctor believes what he is doing is right and that he is saving lives. No reputable doctor will perform an abortion in the third trimester without a compelling reason, but what is a compelling reason?

Leroy Carhart is a late term abortionist. He performs about a dozen abortions every day. Women drive in from every state and wait hours to take advantage of his services. His Abortion clinic is located near Omaha. Carhart started performing abortions in the late 1980s. People picketed his clinic and he received many threats against his life and 1991 his barn was burned to the ground killing 17 horses. His clinics sidewalk has been smeared with manure and he has been stalked and threatened with death. The billboard over his parking garage in foot high letters reads “Abortion & Contraception Center”

About 1,800 doctors perform abortions but he is one of the few who do late term abortions. Only 1.3 percent of abortions are performed after the 21st week. Nebraska’s attorney general, Jon Bruning said, “I don’t support any abortion , but I think third trimester abortions are particularly abhorrent. Bruning has publicly called Carhart, “one sick individual.”

The further along a pregnancy gets the less support there is for abortions. Americans become cautious and conflicted with the passing of each week. A pregnancy is viable at 24 weeks and the right to terminate after that date becomes controversial and less acceptable. At this stage you have a living child with arms and legs.

No reputable doctor will terminate a pregnancy after this stage without a compelling reason, but what is considered a compelling reason? Some would consider a deformity, mental or physical a compelling reason, others would not. Carhart deals in these decisions. One rape victim came to him saying, every time she felt the baby move it brought back the rape all over again. She had tried to kill herself three times. Carhart performed the abortion. He said, “if a woman is going to kill herself, then I think you have to look at it for her health.”

There are many reasons a woman seeks an abortion in late pregnancy. She could be a rape victim who has tried but finds that she cannot live with a child of her rapist, or a happily married woman who has just discovered that her child will be badly deformed. Her options for ending the pregnancy are limited. There are fewer than 9 doctors across the country willing to help her.

Carhart had no intentions of doing abortions when he retired from the Air force. He remembers when he was first asked to visit an abortion clinic. Talking to the women reminded him of the patients he saw as a medical student when botched abortions anywhere from the first to the third trimester left women with perforated uteruses, intestines protruding from the vagina and untreated infections. Women died on the operating tables.

Soon after that visit he trained at an abortion clinic in Philadelphia. He later added an abortion clinic to his walk in clinic. “Abortion is not a four letter word.” He said, “I save lives and I am proud of what I do.”
