How some noted people have regarded appearances then and now.

So many were created as ‘commoners’ and so Abe Lincoln said that was the Lord’s preference on account of the high number. Could the planet support an abundant wealthy class with fewer commoners? One can doubt that by just seeing how the redistribution of the world’s wealth has diminished American economic power and created even more ‘common’ folk out the former middle class.

Helen Reddy a noted 70’s female vocalist said that a lot of women are turned off by the appearance of the early feminists. Were they too masculine looking or ill representative of women on general? The outside is hardly as important as what is on the inside and that idea came through centuries ago when Aesop quipped, “outside show is a poor substitute for inner worth”. That saying too reminds us of the saying about not judging a book by its cover”. The cover can be likened to outward appearances which can be deceiving and be completely skewed from what the person is like on the inside, in both good and bad senses.

Happy as You Want to Be.

Almost everyone have heard the hit single ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ by Bobby McFerrin. The song has a very catchy way of conveying its message of being happy to everyone. Bobby Mcferiin’s simple message surely made a lot of people by telling them not to worry.

Being happy actually protects you from the stresses of life. Stress is linked to top causes of death such as heart disease, cancer and stroke.

One of the better things ever said is – ‘The only thing in life that will always remain the same is change’, and in our life we have the power to make the necessary changes if we want to. Even if we find ourselves in an unbearable situation we can always find solace in the knowledge that it too would change.

Social networks or relationships are essential to happiness. People are different, accept people for who or what they are, avoid clashes, constant arguments, and let go of all kinds of resentments. If arguments seem unavoidable still try and make an effort to understand the situation and you might just get along with well with

Happiness is actually found in everyone, increasing it is a way to make a life more wonderful and also more healthy.

To be happy is relatively easy, just decide to be a happy person. Abraham Lincoln observed that most people for most of the time can choose how happy or stressed, how relaxed or troubled, how bright or dull their outlook to be. The choice is simple really, choose to be happy.

There are several ways by which you can do this.

Being grateful is a great attitude. We have so much to be thankful for. Thank the taxi driver for bringing you home safely, thank the cook for a wonderful dinner and thank the guy who cleans your windows. Also thank the mailman for bringing you your mails, thank the policeman for making your place safe and thank God for being alive.

News is stressful. Get less of it. Some people just can’t start their day without their daily dose of news. Try and think about it, 99% of the news we hear or read is bad news. Starting the day with bad news does not seem to be a sensible thing to do.

A religious connection is also recommended. Being part of a religious group with its singing, sacraments, chanting, prayers and meditations foster inner peace.

Manage your time. Time is invaluable and too important to waste. Time management can be viewed as a list of rules that involves scheduling, setting goals, planning, creating lists of things to do and prioritizing. These are the core basics of time management that should be understood to develop an efficient personal time management skill. These basic skills can be fine tuned further to include the finer points of each skill that can give you that extra reserve to make the results you desire.

Laugh and laugh heartily everyday. Heard a good joke? Tell your friends or family about it. As they also say -’Laughter is the best medicine’.

Express your feelings, affections, friendship and passion to people around you. They will most likely reciprocate your actions. Try not to keep pent up anger of frustrations, this is bad for your health. Instead find ways of expressing them in a way that will not cause more injury or hurt to anyone.

Working hard brings tremendous personal satisfaction. It gives a feeling of being competent in finishing our tasks. Accomplishments are necessary for all of us, they give us a sense of value. Work on things that you feel worthy of your time.

Learning is a joyful exercise. Try and learn something new everyday. Learning also makes us expand and broaden our horizons. And could also give us more opportunities in the future.

Run, jog, walk and do other things that your body was made for. Feel alive.

Avoid exposure to negative elements like loud noises, toxins and hazardous places.

These are the few simple things you can do everyday to be happy.

And always remember the quote from Abraham Lincoln, he says that, “Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be.”

The start of "the Late Great Unpleasantness"

p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }

by Aaron Klass

Excerpted from “The Late Great Uunpleasantness”.

The American Civil War was fought from April 1861 to April 1865. It affected millions of people and cost more than 620,000 men their lives. Because of this Late Great Unpleasantness, the United States became not just a collection of sovereign states, but a unified country with a strong Federal government.

I have been a student of this war for almost fifteen years now. My research and expertise revolve mostly around the life of the common soldier as he marched, fought and, in many cases, died for his cause.

2011 was the 150th anniversary of the first year of the war, beginning, many argue, with the Confederate attack of Ft. Sumter in Charleston Harbor on the early morning of April 12, 1861. This attack was the result of a long tradition of political division between Northern and Southern politics. While the politics of the era are not my forte nor the focus of the blog, it is important to at least highlight the source of contention. The economy of the southern states was built on an agricultural engine that was driven by African slavery. The northern states were more industrialized in many ways, the population was more concentrated and more factories existed. Slavery, in many northern states, had already been outlawed. The steam engine had only recently become the most efficient way of transporting people and goods across the country, and 85% of the railroads in the whole of the United States were built and operating in the North. The rural lifestyles of many southerners meant that they felt it was their own prerogative to decide what laws governed them. They also saw the northern abolitionist movements as a threat to their livelihoods. If they slaves were freed, they feared, then their economy would collapse. The geographically tight knit population of the north tended to view the Federal Government as the sovereign power in the country. This disagreement over the sovereignty of the state governments or the federal government was as old as the country itself, but it took 84 years for that disagreement to erupt into war.

Abraham Lincoln was elected to presidency of the United States in November of 1860. A Republican from Illinois, a northern state, he was deeply mistrusted by southern Democrats and in December 1860 South Carolina was the first state to secede from the Union. Southern statesmen hated Lincoln enough to withdraw from the country, fearing that his Republican politics would force the states to submit to Washington. The rest of the Confederacy followed South Carolina’s example. By February 1, 1861 Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas had all withdrawn from the Union and the Confederate States of America was established on February 4, 1861.

Hostilities between the United and Confederate States opened, as I mentioned above, at Ft. Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Rebel guns under the command of Pierre Beauregard fired on the fort on the morning of April 12th, 1861. Though there were no casualties in this fight, it inaugurated an era of war that would last for five long, bloody years.

Following the attack on Sumter, the state assemblies of Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina also voted to join the rebellion.

The standing army of the United States at the outbreak of the war was small, with no more than 20,000 men stretched from California and Oregon to Maine. Lincoln, at the opening of hostilities, called for 75,000 volunteer soldiers to put down the rebellion. 250,000 volunteers answered the call and the states set to work organizing regiments which could be sent south. General Winfield Scott, known affectionately as “Old Fuss and Feathers” was placed in command of the Union army of the Potomac even though he was too fat to sit a horse. A plan was made to blockade southern ports and march the army south to face the rebels on their own land. The assumption was that once the rebels saw how serious the Northern men were, that they would back down and rejoin the Union.

Southern men also swarmed to serve their country. They also thought that once the northerners saw how serious they were that they would back down. Neither side expected that the war would last longer than nine months.

All of the scrambling to organize and reorganize the country for war meant that much of the fighting of 1861 was small scale actions. July 21st, 1861 is one of the major exceptions. 35,000 troops under Union Commander Irving McDowell crossed the Potomac into Virginia with the intention of capturing Manassas Junction, a major rebel railroad hub. Confederate commanders Joseph Johnston and Pierre Beauregard met them there and the first major battle of the war began. It was fought throughout the day and earned Thomas J. Jackson the nickname “Stonewall”; a recognizable nickname even today. 5,000 men were killed, wounded, or went missing in that battle. It ended with the whole Union army running back north to Washington. While the decisive victory on the field lay in Rebel hands it became shockingly and painfully clear to both sides that the war would not end quickly.

More reorganizing and organizing followed the carnage at Manassas (called Bull Run by Union men). McDowell was replaced by the dashing George B. McClellan and Beauregard was promoted to General in the rebel army. The end of 1861 was characterized by everyone in the country buckling down for the storm to come.

December 31, 2011 marked last day of the 150th anniversary of this important year in American history. Starting January 1, I will be updating the blog with postings to mark the 150th anniversaries of events during the war. I apologize that I could not go into more detail as far as the first year of conflict was concerned, as I only came up with the idea to do this the other day. I hope that you will forgive me and that you enjoy what will henceforth be a day to day account of the Civil War.

A Day-to-Day Account of the American Civil War.

p { margin-bottom: 0.08in; }

The Civil War was a time of immense horror and destruction. The weaponry of the Civil War era was devastatingly accurate, a technological advance that would reshape the way wars were fought well into the 20th century. The wanton destruction which was fostered by these weapons was juxtaposed by the intense compassion of the participants, who, even in the face of hellish battlefield landscapes retained their humanity and performed acts of courage and generosity under unimaginable circumstances.

I have been a student of the Civil War for most of my life. I have forgotten more about this war than many are likely ever to learn. Even so, I have no reasonable explanation for what draws me to this period of turmoil.

The 150th anniversary of the secession of South Carolina passed on December 20th, 2010. This date marked the beginning, at least for me, of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. I marked the passing of other important dates from the first year of the war, the anniversaries of the attack on Ft. Sumter, the establishment of the Confederacy, the First Battle of Bull Run, mostly by letting my friends know what the date was. By the end of 2011 I realized that I would like to do more to commemorate the passing of dates which hold so much meaning for me, and I wanted to be able to share that meaning with strangers, as well as friends and loved ones.

I decided, with lots of help from friends and family, that I would undertake a large writing project. A project that would act as a real-time news feed on the events of 150 years earlier, and also as a repository for the knowledge of the period that I do have, as it’s only doing me any good if that information only lives in my head. The result is “The Late Great Unpleasantness”, titled after a lesser known name for the war used by Americans after the cessation of hostilities.

By using mostly primary sources annotated from my own knowledge, I hope to paint a picture of life during the Civil War that is engaging, horrifying, and inspiring. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I’m enjoying writing it.

Even though I’ll be writing this piece for some time, there is no way that I’ll be able to discuss everything that I know about the American Civil War. If any of my readers should desire more information about any of the potentially millions of topics that I could be discussing pertaining to this war, please feel free to get in touch with me. I love talking about this stuff.

Thank you for your interest, and enjoy “The Late Great Unpleasantness”!

The statement published on the website only television station as part of a complete interview on 60 Minutes Overtime.

According to a transcript posted on the page that, Obama said he would retain his achievements as president against Lyndon B. Johnson, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.

“I would put the accomplishments of the legislature and our foreign policy in the first two years of my administration against any president, except Johnson, FDR, and Lincoln, just in terms of what we’ve done in modern history,” Obama told Steve Kroft from CBS.

In the second part of the "Overcoming Failure" article, we look at the endeavours of others to inspire us towards success as we learn from and embrace our failings.

So this is the second part of the article in which we look at overcoming failure. The first part gave us hints and clues towards beating our failings. Indeed we briefly gave a history lesson of iconic people from our history who managed to succeed in their endeavours, despite falling at the first few hurdles.

Failure is not an option – not is you want to succeed. We have all fell from grace, we have all hit a dead-end and we have all stumbled through life at some point or another. But it is about the person you are who inspires you to overcome our failures through life and push through towards success.

Take a star baseball player. On average they only hit the ball approximately three out of ten times. To many that would appear like a high failure rate, wouldn’t it? Yet they are classed as “stars” in their own right. People we admire and sportsmen who aspire to succeed.

So why are they classed as a success? Simple: It is is because they focus on the law of averages. Star baseball players know that if they keep swinging that bat then they’ll eventually get to base. At some point they will hit that home run and reach their goal. They keep trying!

Think of another sportsman – this time from our history books. In 952 Roger Bannister ran in the Olympics and ended up finishing in fourth place. He failed and did not win a medal. You get nothing for fourth place.

But finishing fourth inspired him to better himself. Whilst he failed, the inspiration he received and inner belief pushed him to better achievements. In other words he failed to quit.

With regards to Bannister, many people considered it humanly impossible to run a mile under four minutes. Experts scoffed at such a fete and the odds were stacked against Bannister. But that was his goal. The fact the so-called experts dismissed his goals out of hands and instantly assumed he would fail, was the inspiration behind Bannister’s success. Behold, May 6,1954 Bannister achieved his goal despite the experts scoffing his target. Now runners achieve the mile under four minutes on a regular basis.

So what’s the point to all this?

It’s all about how you see yourself when facing a task or a goal. If you refuse to quit simply because you failed at the first number of attempts, then you will ultimately succeed. It’s about your willpower and whether you wish to get back up and keep trying.

Keep that mindset and you will overcome your failure and push through towards success. It’s about hard work, motivation, dedication and your belief. Learn from your failure and allow it to inspire you towards success – not let it consume you and doom you towards quitting your goals.

In 1832, Abraham Lincoln was defeated for the State Legislature. In 1833 he ultimately failed in business. In 1835 sadly his girlfriend passed away. Then in 1836 he suffered a nervous breakdown. Following this, in 1838 he was defeated for Illinois House Speaker. In 1843 he suffered another defeat, this time for nomination to Congress. Another defeat followed in 1854 when again he suffered defeat for the U.S. Senate. In 1856 he was defeated for nomination for Vice President. Then in 1858 he was defeated again in a U.S. Senate race.

That is a lot of defeats or failures isn’t it? Yet today he is considered as one of America’s greatest Presidents.

Remember that a wise man says that it is a mistake to suppose that people succeed only through success; as they only succeed through their failures.

You are not defeated until the past takes your focus off your future. Do not be afraid of failure. Instead embrace it and learn from it as this will only inspire you towards success.
