Teaching abroad is easy and fun. This is my review of the things you thought you would need, but actually don't.

Ever thought about teaching abroad? Not sure if you have what it takes? Well, it really is easier that you think! Of course what with the economy seemingly permanently stuck in the toilet, and an endless stream as us graduates sloshing about the market place making finding a decent job ever harder it is also increasingly temping to jump ship for a while. So, I hear you ask, what skills or qualifications do I need to teach abroad, and what do I need to know? Lucky for you I’m here to give you the answers. Here are my five things you thought you needed to teach abroad but don’t!

No Degree required! Yes that’s right, you don’t need to have a degree, I’m sure passing high school would help, but to be honest I doubt you even need that. True, its easier if you do have a degree, but if you don’t just talk a bit more about that ‘university of life’ you attended, or your ‘experiences’.

No teaching qualifications required! Honestly you need have no teaching qualification at all! Not even one of those pointless weekend TEFL courses! In fact you need have no teaching skills whatsoever!

No experience required! You really don’t need any teaching experience at all! I mean, of course, it might help you if you have a couple of weeks experience teaching but you don’t need them

No need to be good at English! Yes, that’s right, you can be a semi-literate grammar hater, who doesn’t know who Oscar Wilde is and thinks Shakespeare is just the sibling of a famous music act. It doesn’t matter in the least. So long as you can just about speak English you’ll get a job

No need to really like teaching! Seems a strange one huh? Be really, in some of the jobs you’ll teach with a local teacher, for only a few hours a week. Really, its a small price to pay for a free trip and great experience.

Given this list of things you don’t need, you may well ask if you do need anything? Well, in my experience the biggest thing is the right attitude. If you the kind of person who is shy, easily upset and gets homesick, then you might find it tricky. You’ll be in a country where no one speaks your language, so you really need to put yourself out there to make new friends.

The culture shock will also hurt sometimes. Sometimes you will really wonder why you are there. You’ll be bored, lonely, wishing you could buy that brand of toothpaste that you love at home and hating the strange country your in. When you go to a new country, you must expect to feel like this sometimes, everyone does. Just work through it, and it’ll be fine.

Basically, teaching abroad will give you the opportunity to: travel somewhere for free, live there for free, get paid to do very little work, and really experience a new culture in a way tourist never do. Be aware that this isn’t always easy, but anyone can do it and its a great experience that you’ll remember forever!

A world without dreams is dull. Life without dreams is boring. Dreams can take you up a rocky mountain. Dreams push an ordinary person to become an extra ordinary one through hard works.

The dreams I am talking here are not about those successions of images, ideas, emotions and sensations occurring involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep.

They are about the expression and visualizing of solid thoughts, emotions, and ideas that signal about what you want and what you need for your physical life. They need physical works and efforts. They are there to help you mould your future. Dreams give you strength to face the natural world of your choice to reach success in life.

Thirty-Seven years ago, I visualized becoming an accountant and a writer. But the problem was – how to make them happen. I knew my parents could not afford to send me to school to finish those courses I had wished. However, I did not give up dreaming. In 1976, I was sixteen year old at that time and had just finished my elementary; I decided to leave my parents.

Contrary to the will of my parents I still left them and lived the way I can. Living away from them was not easy and productive. I had slept under pine trees, robustly standing around our town plaza. I had used scrap cardboards and old newspapers as my gasket and beddings. Sometimes I slept on the height of the tower of our town church, inside waiting shades and fish market along with other deserted children. I had become immune from the mosquitoes bites, salty smells and the freezing darkness. There were nights I was weeping, remembering my family but the homesickness for them did not change my decision.

I made friendship with those children who were also at my age. I mingled and associated with them like one family with the same fate. Thus, it became easier for me to be with them. The fish market was our source of living. Lifting of goods of market vendors in exchange of some money to be divided equally among us were exciting and memorable experience. We really enjoyed for doing it.

Until I labored to a construction group, located in front of Felipe Abrigo National Memorial School of Arts and Trades (FANMSAT) now known the Southern Samar National School of Arts and Trades (SSNSAT) in the town of Guiuan, Eastern Samar. At first I felt intense pain on my body, prickly fingers and feet but despite heavy and hard works I was happy to receive the 15 pesos for a day work.

There were nights I was anxious. I could not sleep in the barracks due to chronic fatigue and pain in my whole body. I wept and I wanted to go home but the advent of the future surpassed what I felt – especially when day time came - watching hundreds of young students entering the school gate, I pretended I was one of them carrying books and notebooks. The difficulty and fatigue from hard works eventually disappeared.

Six months later, the constructions of the five units of apartments were done. We moved to another project – a three-story building owned by a Chinese businessman. But before leaving the place, I stood up in front of FANMCAT with my promise that I shall return to study high school.

I was sixteen year old when I finished and received my Grade School Certificate, from Mayana Elementary School, Guiuan, Eastern Samar, Philippines in 1976. I started my high school in 1977 as self-supporting student and received my Secondary School Certificate from Southern Samar School of Arts and Trades, Guiuan, Eastern Samar, Philippines during the school year 1980-1981. Following that year, I took up One Year in Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education from Southern Samar School of Arts and Trades, Guiuan, Eastern Samar, Philippines during the school years 1981-1982.

The following year I stopped my college education. I went to Manila to look for job but I was not lucky so I decided to go home to my home province, Samar. During the school year 1984 to 1985, I took up One Year in Bachelor of Science in Cooperative Management at the University of Eastern Philippines, Catarman, Northern Samar.

Before the beginning of school years 1985-1986, I left Catarman with my school records and decided to study at Leyte Colleges, Tacloban City, Philippines. The college approved. All the units I had taken from the past years in college were credited. I was enrolled as a second year student in Bachelor of Science in Commerce Accounting. However, I did not finish my accountancy course. Just after the first semester I left for Manila again.

December 1986, I dreamed again to raise my own family. Marrying my wife was the best decision I ever made in my life. The love I felt for her was my strength. Now we have three children, all girls ages 22, 20 and 18 and we are now approaching our silver wedding anniversary. I married my wife with a ten peso bill on my wallet. I courted her for six days and on the 7th day, we were married. It happened in 1986. Mrs. Corazon C. Aquino was our new Philippine President.

On December 3, 1986, I started courting my wife. I visited her in the morning, lunchtime and in the evening for about six days. On December 8, 1986, I got her approval to marry me. Quickly as lightning, we scheduled our wedding the next day December 9, 1986.

That same day, we brought our plan to her parents and it was approved. Also that same day, we contacted our chosen sponsors and we were advised to see them in the morning the next day at Trece, Martirez City Hall to get the marriage license and other documents needed for the civil wedding.

On December 9, 1986 at around 9AM, all the necessary documents for the wedding were completed with the help of our sponsors. At around 10:30 AM we proceeded to the office of the judge located at the second floor of the Municipal City Hall.

The ceremony was simple and very fast. It only took less than ten minutes after the judge declared, “I pronounce you Paul and you Imelda as husband and wife”. Following his declaration were the wishes of congratulations and the signing of our signatures on the documents with his signature and the signatures of our godparents.

Early 1994, I again had dreamed to go abroad. I was lucky though because I did not experience much difficulty in acquiring an overseas job. My uncle-in-law who at that time was a chief accountant of the company Kawasaki Helicopter Saudi Arabia – Finance Department helped me get my current job by recommending me to the administrator of the company. A Philippine based recruitment agency, FB Allan processed my papers and I was able to go out of the country as a documented OFW.

When I arrived in my current location on March 23, 1994, I was first employed as a janitor/laborer. That will be my work position for two years and nine months. The management must have noticed my hard work because I was promoted to be a Facility Records Clerk. After some time I was again promoted to be an Analyst/Bookkeeper and this would be my job for nine years and three months.

The promotion did not stop there. On May 8, 2006, I was assigned as Secretary to the Vice President, then later as an Analyst. At present, the company I am working for assigned me to manage of a new showroom that sells antiques and other home accessories. From being a mere janitor, I had gone a long way and one can say that things just get better and better for me.

Aside from working, I also devote some time for my other interests. While employed, I took up a creative writing course by mail with the Writer’s Bureau in Manchester London during the years 1999-2000. In 2001, I took up Journalism and short story writing course with the ICS, PA, USA by mail.

A debatable topic as to which is the region which gives more oppurtunities....

As we all know, India has borne the brand of a “developing” nation for a long time. All these years, india has been the

epitome of development.IT, tourism and many other fields have undergone rapid development in the last few years creating

large job oppurtunities.

However, there is a notion that the west is open to more oppurtunities than india. This is partly true as the west has more

non-technical based oppurtunities, where as, india on the other hand is limited to technical fields. One thing we should note

over here is, Oppurtunities are based upon what we are looking for. For example, if im interested in pursuing my carrer in

arts or fashion, india would be my last option. The west greatly outweighs the number of oppurtunities in those fields,

compared to india.

When we talk about this subject, we should also question ourselves why india lacks in oppurtunities. Today india is learning

fast. People now want to learn and educate themselves like they’ve never done before in history. Hence there is a vast

change in what people demand today. However, the larger section of our population is still stuck up on the older epitome, the

agriculture sector. The agriculture sector in India is one of the largest in the world. It still remains as the largest income to

many people. Although there is a shift in the lifestyle of today’s indians, agriculture is still the favourite of 60% indians. No

wonder, India experiences the largest brain drain than any other country in the world.

To increase oppurtunities, the tertiary sector must develop. It is no surprise that today government has actually taken notice

of that piont seeing there is much emmigration. Over the last 20 years, production in the tertiary sector has increased so

much as to marginally replace the primary sector. This is a marvellous achievement. So what has caused such an alteration?

Four reasons-

1) Amenities such as hospitals, educational institutions, services like police, courts, administration, defence, transport,

banks, etc are more in demand.

2) Since India is more into agriculture, oppurtunities are opening towards development of services such as transport, trade,

storage and processing of agricultural goods.

3) As income of people rises, new possibilities are opening to meet the demands of the more modernised people such as hotels,

shopping, private hospitals, private schools, and tourism. Keeping in view India’s vast heritage and culture, tourism is a fast

growing sector, attrtacting even the west.

4) Services of information and communication technology have immensly increased over the decade.

The new trend, not exactly new, is west turning towards india. For centuries, india has been the bull’s eye country for

exploitation. In the past it had been a big problem, but today it’s creating numerous oppurtunities. Im talking about MNC’s

(multinational corporations).Here’s an example:

Ford motors, an American company, is one of the world’s largest automobile company. Ford motors came to India in 1995 and

set up a plant in collaboration with Mahindra and Mahindra. By the year 2004, Thousands of cars were selling in india and

thousands more were exported. This collaboration not only increased the income of a indian industry but also offered

employment.

I’m not talking of only automobiles here, look around you. you are in a globalised world. Everybody is connected to the main

stream of the global economy.Oppurtunities are flying in, why fly out in search of them.

I just want to conclude by saying a little story.

Long ago, there was an island. Two shoe manufacturing companies sent their representatives to do a survey & spot business

opportunities.

Both the representatives reached the island. They were shocked to see that the people on the island did not know shoes!

So, the first representative called his boss and said, “I’m shocked to see that they don’t know what shoes are! We can’t do

business here!”

Second representative called his boss and said, “These folks do not know what shoes are. Let’s start with 10,000 pairs!”

Opportunities exist everywhere – all around you. You just need an eye to spot them.

Romania is the name of my country and some of the words that are associated with it these days are poverty, corruption, gypsies, lack of perspective and depression. Taking these things into consideration, it’s no wonder that many teenager think of leaving Romania.

One of the main reasons young people have when they decide to leave the country is the financial situation. Any person would like to have a decent life, this meaning having the basic necessities met-a house, a job and modern facilities that could make a life easier- a car, a computer, a fridge and the like. A house today costs thousands of euro and a teenager should save up the salaries of 100 years of hard work to afford to buy a house. A job is hard to find even if you have got diplomas, certificates and expertise in a certain field. There are many professionals, well-qualified middle-age people who have to accept low-paid jobs in a system that has no other decent offers. Under such circumstances, the competition is tough, and the corruption diminishes the chances of fairly getting a job after a job interview. A lot of people buy lottery tickets having the secret hope that they would be the winners of a fabulous brand new car. In such a society, a smart graduate, full of potential, who knows that he or she can do better and that he or she deserves better, seriously takes into consideration the option of immigrating.

The prospect of a god salary, of a job and the possibility of being promoted and of reaching the top of the hierarchy in a respectable company is appealing to any courageous graduate who dares to leave the nest. Money makes the world go round and many foreign companies have strategies and policies of head-hunting. Brilliant graduates don’t have to bother to search for opportunities, they are offered many choices.

But sometimes money is not the top priority, I’ve seen cases of people who decided to leave Romania because they wanted to do something this country. The labels attached to Romania vary from: a country of thieves to the country of gypsies, of orphans and of corrupted people. Many graduates feel humiliated by such labels ad they feel the need to change the general perception on Romania. Such graduates have a strong sense of patriotism, of morality, of pride and they want to show to world that Romanians are also creative, honest, hard-working people even sometimes smart. Occasionally we hear on the news about groups of exceptional students who are hired by important western companies. Occasionally we hear about artists that perform on the great stage of the world. Unfortunately, the Romanian mass-media are more concerned about promoting the dark side of the Romanian society. And this is also frustrating.

Last but not least, another major reason is the future of their future children. Leaving your country is not a simple decision to make. It implies leaving behind the dear ones, your family, friends, your past, your roots, habits and customs. It means plunging into a totally new environment with new rules and regulations that you have to adjust to very quickly. Some fail and come back home, finding the change too dramatic and not worth fighting for. But others decide that, no matter how hard it might by for them, as long as their children could have a better life, it’s worth the effort. The hope that their children will not experience poverty, humiliation and frustration gives these graduates the strenght to keep going. It takes time until they manage to reach that status that gives them the confidence that they have reached their goals. They are already middle-aged people when they reach the much-desired stability. But even if somehow it’s too late for them, they are happy that they haven’t failed as parents.

Things have started to change around us, we have the freedom of making choices rather than following stereotypes and my choices is to become active, to get involved and to fight for my dignity and my pride of being Romanian.

Year 2010 stories!
Three people UFO stories!

For centuries, different cultures have recorded visitors from other planets. Native Americans, like the Hopi or the Cherokee, called these visitors the star people. In our time, thousands of people from around the world say that they have seen these creatures and their spaceship.

The stories are very similar. A lot of people do not want to speak about their experiences. However, we have found three people who want to tell us their stories:

1.

I am a US Air force pilot. A lot of pilots I know have had contact with UFOs, but they are afraid to talk about it. I , personally, have seen UFOs four or five times. Once, I was in my plane over the Caribbean, when suddenly I heard a terrible noise. two round spaceships appeared next to the plane. They flew very close to us. Their lights went on and off. I was very frightened. Then suddenly, they disappeared.

2.

I live in New York on the 12 th floor a block of flats. I have had the same terrible experience several times: I am sleeping at home when aliens come into my flat. They take me out of the window and carry me into their spaceship. Then , they give me medical tests. The aliens are very small , with big eyes, but they are very strong. The next day, I wake up with marks on body. I have been to my doctor and shown him the marks. He says that they are from a medical operation. But I have never had an operation in my life!

3.

I am a police officer and I often work at night. This happened one night last year: I was in my police car, when suddenly there was a noise. My car stopped and the lights went off. Then I saw it. There was a around spaceship in the park. I saw about ten creatures near the spaceship, small but with big heads. They got out and took samples of the plants and trees in the park. After ten minutes they went back to the spaceship and it took off. My car suddenly started. The next day , I talked to people in the street. Five other people also saw the spaceship. It wasn’t my imagination!

An article on the vikings abroad and their wars.

The Vikings Abroad and their Wars

When the Vikings sailed overseas in their longships, they were ready to kill and plunder. They went in search of trade and new lands in which to make their homes.

Viking longships were fast and strong enough to cross oceans. From the late 700’s bands of Vikings set sail from Scandinavia to land on the coasts of Western Europe. The sigh of a Viking sail soon caused panic, for people knew the Vikings were fierce fighters with their favourite weapons being, iron swords and axes. They raided monasteries and towns, carrying off with slaves and booty. The Vikings were also looking to seize land. Viking attacks on England began in 787, and from 865 Vikings from Denmark had begun to settle in Eastern England. Vikings also settles in the Orkney and Shetland islands off the coast of Scotland, and the Isle of Man and Ireland. They attacked what is now France, but were bought off with the gift of Normandy in 911bc. Sailing west into the Atlantic Ocean, Norwegian Vikings settled in Iceland and Greenland, and landed in North America. Swedish Vikings travelled as far easy as the Black Sea, trading with Greeks and Arabs who called them the Rus – from which come the name Russia. Vikings wandered in the markets of Baghdad and Constantinople, and goods from such exotic places found their way back to Viking towns such as Jorvik (York) in England and Dublin in Ireland. Where Vikings settles, they often mingled with the local people. In England, King Alfred of Wessex led the against the invaders, but Viking settlements in Eastern England left a permanent legacy in customs, laws, place names, and language. Viking words include, knife and calf. We use Viking words in everyday life.

Many Indian students go abroad to pursue their higher studies. Recent statistics show that students are going abroad in numbers which go in increasing every year. This highlights a very big question of what makes these students not pursue education in their homeland and go abroad. This article states a few reasons why.

Statistics say that after Chinese students, Indian students are the next highest in going abroad for Higher Education. Indian students go all around the world but mainly frequent in countries like USA, UK and Australia. They pursue various courses there and then get a degree. Few fly back home and pursue jobs at home with their newly acquired degrees but most of them settle down in these countries and settle down there itself and find employment opportunities there and eventually many people settle down there permanently for the rest of their lives. Many such students even apply for citizenship and then eventually become citizens of that country.

They go abroad for various reasons. It is not that India lacks educational facilities. In fact we have so many facilities for higher education and many foreigners even come to India for higher education. Many students educated in India also get very good jobs. Then why is it so that Indian students go abroad for education? That too in such high numbers.

First of all, we can blame the Indian education system. The Indian educational system us very impractical and too theoretical. There is very little scope to actually learn something. Practice and application of their subjects are minimal. The Indian educational system also has limitations in terms of extra curricular activities. So Indian students become very academically-oriented and nothing else. All these are the key disadvantages of the Indian education system. It also translates into disinterest of the students to pursue any further education in India.

Secondly, other countries offer much more. Other countries offer a much better lifestyle. Often, students are attracted by this and they go off abroad. Also, there are many job opportunities abroad than in India. People, specially those who are willing to settle abroad find this a major plus point. The educational opportunities abroad also are very good. There is no worry of quotas or reservations. They just check how good ou are and grant you admission.

We do have many colleges and universities, but not all of them are well reputed. There are many colleges in India which even lack basic infrastructure and teachers. There are few universities and colleges and there is way too much competition to get into these institutions. There are too many people clamoring for seats in these colleges. Also, there is the reservation factor. Students with an SC/ST/OBC certificate may get into these colleges with minimum marks but other open merit students with a much higher percentage is denied admission. The student is then forced to shell out a huge sum of his/her parent’s hard earned money to purchase a seat. This is one reason why the students find it much better to go abroad.

These are major factors why Indian students go abroad. These students pay a huge amount of money to these countries. We do have excellent institutions right here at home. We must strive hard to remove these bottlenecks and get all the deserving students to study here in india

Brain Drain from India has been quite a problem especially when you see such a big diaspora of Indians abroad.

India is rather in a very bad crisis. No, it is not hunger, poverty, terrorism or the Maoists, it is brain drain. Brain drain is a term which means that precious skill has been drained away.

What it actually means is that many skilled Indians with high intelligence, aptitude and skill go to other countries and work for them, leaving the other countries with good highly developed human resources, and India with nothing.

Indians have the advantage of good education in India. Though education does not reach all parts and all people, whoever is able to get the educational opportunities manage to develop a lot.

Higher education in India is also very good. High standards are maintained by many universities and colleges and their reputation is unquestionable. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is one such example. Education in India is highly competitive and skilled. In order to stay in the game, students do a lot more than just academics. They then become a pool of very highly skilled individuals. It is commonplace for many bright Indian students to eye on Ivy league universities as a backup option if they don’t manage to get into reputed colleges in India.

Even after great educational opportunities in India, students aim to study in better institutes in the west. Though they go to the west in the pretext of education, it turns out to be something different.

Parents send their children to foreign countries and pay really large sums of money for their education abroad. Indian students do fare very well. And then they are attracted by the Western way of life and instead of coming back to their own soil and their own home, they live permanently in these foreign lands and do not come back.
This is like spitting on India’s face. Our best people are given to other countries. They develop and progress while they do not care about their own homeland. We develop our people and in the end, they are taken away from us.

There are many causes for this. Indians are not satisfied with the pay they get at home. They look towards the west for more monetary benefits. A western way of life is very attractive. This lures many Indians to go to the west.

One another reason, perhaps the most saddening reason, is the lack of patriotism within Indian youth. Such people do not care what happens to their country. They are least bothered that they are supposed to show gratitude. For if it weren’t for the blessings of the motherland, he/she wouldn’t have got such an opportunity.

While we cannot change the economic circumstances such that we are able to provide really high monetary benefits to our workforce overnight, what is important for us to do now is help instill a sense of patriotism and DUTY towards the country into the masses. We must tell them not to be so selfish and that they must contribute to society.

If we possessed this great big pool of great minds, we would have progressed far more than we are now. We could develop out nation many times faster and we would be like any other developed country. In fact, we could be much better and stronger if we worked together keeping our dear motherland in mind.
