Advocacy Consultation for Victims of Sexual and Domestic Violence

by Mama Heartfilled in Activism, May 24, 2009

Advocacy is a form of consultation and is a role consultants take on when they believe a certain course of action should be taken. Advocacy consultation is the role of the consultant who is entirely devoted to some course of action. Considering these two definitions, one would be considered an Advocate consultant for victims of sexual and domestic violence, if that person believes very strongly that the empowerment of victims is what needs to happen to help victims overcome the abusive situation and further them in their healing process. As an advocate, the consultant for victims attempts to persuade the consultee-client to do what the consultant believes is the best course of action, which is to put themselves in a place of safety and of healing.

An Existentialist Approach to Career Development in Victims of Domestic Violence

Existential counseling integrates well with career counseling for victims of domestic violence. It emphasizes the responsibility of freedom, the value of choice, the anxiety that comes with wrong choices, such as the choice of abusive partners, while prompting the search for love and meaning. Career counseling is also a search for meaning in the lives of victims. Clients are seeking peace in their lives, as well as fulfilling employment where they will have economic stability. The counselor assists in the search for a better life, including the career development aspects of it, while confronting the ineffective behaviors, such as remaining in unhealthy relationships. Counselors encourage them to take responsibility for their own lives, which is consistent with the goals of career counseling.
