Adam Smith The Misunderstood Economist

by Alex Kashko in Economics, November 7, 2010
noimage

Adam Smith is commonly regarded as the father of economics and has fans among right wing freedom oriented thinkers. His keenest supporters seem never to have read his “Wealth of Nations” nor his earlier work “Theory of Moral Sentiments” which provides the ethical underpinnings of his later works, most of which seem to have been ignored.

Not only do Smith’s loudest supporters appear to have based their philosophy on third party soundbites from “Wealth of Nations” they also appear not to realise that the 18th century is over 200 years past but also that the language has changed between the publication of “Wealth of Nations” in 1776 and today.

“Wealth of Nations” is a long and often tedious book needing translation of words and concepts to the present day and this note may help anyone starting to study it.
