The Scarlet Letter is a book about sin, punishment, and the hope of redemption. The book is about the life in colonial Boston of Hester Prynne, Her husband Roger Chillingworth, and Hester’s lover Arthur Dimmesdale. However, Hester Prynne throughout the whole novel remains the greatest sinner of all the characters because of her continual sin and lies for purely self-gain.

Hester is the greatest sinner in The Scarlet Letter because when it comes to those that really matter in her life she would rather have them continue their sins of adultery and hatred. She is the origin of pain for all the other characters in the story; her sin’s punishment is also carried out in others and causes others to sin. She lies for Roger and this shows that she is also okay with her sin and his sin. “Breathe not the secret, above all, to the man thou wettest of…’Swear it!’ rejoined he. And she took the oath. (71)” Hester continues to keep this secret even after it is revealed that it is doing more harm to Dimmesdale, the one she loves, than the possible good that keeping the secret is doing for her. She uses Roger Chillingworth’s sin as a cover for herself throughout the story. The life of Chillingworth begins to revolve around torturing pastor Dimmesdale; this is because of Hester and Hester not revealing and continuing her charade over who she committed adultery with, Her giving into temptation and committing adultery with Dimmesdale, and her failure to disclose the true identity of Roger Chillingworth to Arthur Dimmesdale.

Image via Wikipedia

Hester also is okay with her habitual sin, her mindset is that when judgment day comes she and Dimmesdale will be able to stand together. Hester wants to keep living in sin with the pastor Dimmesdale and not have him admit his sin to the people of Boston, where they live. Hester continually denies how bad her sin actually is, Hester tells herself that Roger Chillingworth’s sin is actually worse. Hester tries to vilify her sin and say that it is not very bad. “Hester felt that the sacrifice of the clergyman’s good name, and death itself, as she had already told Roger Chillingworth, would have been infinitely preferable to the alternative which she had taken upon herself to choose (183).” This shows that Hester will not even admit that her punishment publicly was less painful then the punishment of a secret like the one carried by Arthur Dimmesdale. Hester shows that she is fine with the idea of letting anyone sin and carry secrets as long as it benefits her.

Lastly, Hester does not remorse her sin and continually lies of her scarlet letter’s nature so she does not have to face guilt brought on by others. Hester continues to protect herself by covering up the name of her partner in adultery, the true identity of Roger Chillingworth and forces herself to become an outsider in the town of Boston. “She had wandered, without rule or guidance, in a moral wilderness… The scarlet letter was her passport into regions where other women dared not tread. Shame, Despair, Solitude! These had been her teachers…” (189). Hester isolates herself so she does not have to deal with the remorse brought on by onlookers. This shows that Hester is constantly despaired even after the townspeople of Boston start to accept her and do not see her A mean Adultery as much as it means Able. Hester will not even tell her own daughter, Pearl, the true nature of the A. “’Mother,’ said she, ‘what does the scarlet letter mean?’… ‘Hold thy tongue, naughty child!’…’do not tease me; else I shall put thee into the dark closet (171)!” The fact that Hester will not even tell her daughter about the A shows how Hester continues to look out for only herself and gains by not losing the respect of Pearl in this instance. This all shows that Hester would rather not tell about the nature or lie about the nature of the letter then face the true nature of her sin and the guilt brought on by others.

Cover via Amazon

Hester is the greatest sinner in the Scarlet Letter. Her deception and contortion of the truth lead to continual deception of even the people she loves makes her the cause of others sin, punishment, and torture. Hester causes so much unnecessary pain for those around her. Hester is the greatest sinner for she shows little if any remorse for her sin. She will not even tell her daughter, Pearl, the true nature of the A even though Pearl is the embodiment of the A and the reason Hester wears it. Hester sins only out of pleasure, self-gain, and the hope falsely backed up and associated with more sin.

Love rats – should you confront them?

When you find out that your Love Rat boyfriend has cheated on you yet again, it can be very easy to stand there, screaming and shouting, asking questions that you don’t want to hear the answers to and trying to get some emotion from a man that seems to have no remorse for his own actions. Confronting a love rat may seem like a really great idea at the time but in reality, you are likely to feel more confused and angry than when you started.

The thing with dating a love rat and to be more precise, being cheated on by a love rat is that they don’t do it to upset you, they do it because they can and they think they can get away with it. When you confront him, you are more likely to have him running to the hills, avoiding commitment and any sort of confrontation that it might take to improve the relationship. To be completely honest, confronting a man like this is going to be more harm to you than good and you are not going to get anywhere.

Most girls love a love rat simply because they see him as a challenge; they think that they are the one girl to change him. The reality of the matter is, if he is still being his love rat self, you haven’t changed him and you are not the girl for him! Rather than standing there crying and shouting, it is possibly a better idea to take a deep breath and walk away with your head held high and your dignity still intact!

What cheating means for your relationship.

When one or the other partner cheats within a relationship, it can be hard to know where both parties stand. Does this mean the end? Does your partner not love you anymore? Do you not satisfy him or her in bed? There can be very many questions to answer and not many places to find them but the one thing that will help you at this moment is to sit down and talk with your partner.

There are so many reasons as to why betrayals occur within partnerships and the first way to decide where the relationship itself will head from this point on wards is to sit down and talk. Does your partner want to be with you still? Why did he or she cheat on your in the first place? It can be very hard to ask these questions and to deal with the answers that you are given but if you want to make the relationship work, this is a necessity.

Although cheating does not have to mean the end of a relationship, it does mean that a lot of hard work, compromise and effort are going to be needed in order to fix the relationship so to speak. The partner that cheated will need a lot of patience – the journey is going to be a rough one. The cheating is likely to be brought up in many fights and it is going to take a lot of persuasion, reassurance and love to make sure that the other partner knows that it will not happen again. For the person within the relationship that was cheated on, the trust issue is going to be a very real one for a long time and can take an awful lot of time to get over.

Four reasons why she had an affair.

When you think of affairs within marriages, your mind usually verges on the side of the male within the relationship being unfaithful. It is, however, increasingly common for women to have extra marital affairs as well as men and if you are a victim of the ultimate betrayal or simply knows someone that is, you may be wondering about the reasons behind this.

1. A well needed boost to self-esteem and confidence. Sometimes women just do not get the recognition that they need at home such as the husband telling them how beautiful they are. This is more so the case for women rather than men as women have to go through the ordeal of child birth and never quite having the same body afterwards!

2. New sexual experiences. A woman may not have had as many sexual partners as her husband or got married rather young and therefore feels the need to be young and experience “sleeping around” a little bit.

3. If the woman doesn’t get the emotional connection that she needs from her husband, she may very well look for it elsewhere. Busy work schedules and family lives are often the case for the lack of communication and empathy and can lead to huge problems.

4. Last but certainly not least, the final reason that a woman may give for having an affair is that she is lonely. Perhaps she recently moved to a new town or area and was struggling to meet new people or has recently left her job for one reason or another. Maybe the affair isn’t really a sexual one but more a friend with benefits that will listen and understand?

Confronting the other woman – incriminating texts on his phone.

Borrowing a partner’s phone only to find incriminating text messages or pictures from other women suggesting infidelity is something that many women dread every happening to them but in reality, it is a very common occurrence. Even if you thought that something wasn’t right and sneakily went through his phone rather than just coming across the evidence by accident can leave you feeling as though you have been hit by a train. It is a shocking moment of your life and one that you never want to happen but you can never really be prepared for the future.

If this has happened to you and you are wondering about the best way to deal with it then perhaps confronting the other woman and telling her to back off is the right option for you. At least by doing this, there is a chance that your man never has to know that you have gone through his phone or found the upsetting texts, calls or pictures. The thing that you need to remember is this woman may not necessarily be a bad woman. She could be under the impression that she is dating a nice single man and has no idea about you at all. Bearing this in mind, going in “all guns blazing” is perhaps not the right decision.

When you first call the other woman, tell her that you are your partner’s girlfriend or wife and ask her if she knows about you. Tell her that you have found the evidence and that you know what has been going on and that you have not called to have a fight with her but rather to tell her to please back off before anyone else gets hurt. Playing this situation in this manner tells her that you are still his number on priority but in a way that she doesn’t necessarily feel threatened or upset by your behavior. Be calm and sophisticated and at least try and get out of the situation with some dignity!

Fate catches up with a young killer even when the police do not.

CRIME COMIC REVIEW JOHNNY CRAIG THE SEWER 1951 The Mammoth Book Of Best Crime Comics.

Spoiler alerts

A cruel hand of fate befalls a man involved in a brutal crime of passion, in a story reminiscent of The Postman Always Rings Twice. The simplicity and relentless roll towards tragedy of the tale speaks volumes.

Essentially, it’s a simple tale of adultery, jealousy, murder and madness. A man loves another man’s wife, and plots with his lover to kill off her husband. We don’t see whether she agrees to the crime, but she does witness her husband being battered down violently and drowned in the bathtub.

Together, the killers dump the body in the sewers, and that is when the widow freaks out, screaming murder, and starting to lose her mind. She runs to the police, but she is too distressed to give them the full story or the name of the killer. The police dismiss her as criminally insane and have her locked up, seemingly forever.

Convinced that she has revealed the proof of his crime, the killer goes on the run, and in the end, desperately hides in the sewer he dumped the victim in This seems a little irrational, as if the widow had told the police where the body was the police would be heading here. In fact, the police have no idea that the body is there or that the man is the killer.

It is raining, and the sewer is becoming a flood basin. The protagonist could get free from the rising water unless … a certain dead body planted there earlier wasn’t now ensuring a watery doom for the man who consigned him to a similar demise….

A brilliant, macabre work of poetic justice, and tension – the rain reflecting the way the good life is erased and the rising water spells the doom awaiting the wicked.

Christmas as we used to know it in Northern Uganda in the 1980s was a day that would make Jesus Cry yet the folks loved it with evey bit of their lives.

Growing up in my little village in Northern Uganda, Christmas as it used to be, was the most memorable Calender day of the year which every family member would wait on with unreserved anticipation. On every Christmas day, folks would invest their labor, money and time to make one great bash of a day. As I re-collect today what Christmas used to be, I get completely perturbed to note that village folks indeed, had a rough idea about what Christmas seemed to signify! At least they knew that it was a Christian occasion dedicated to the birth of our Lord Jesus. That explained why many of the them would try to make it to Church on Christmas day even if none of them visited the Church through out the rest of the 11 months of the year.

Church Service on Christmas Day

A typical Christmas day, therefore would effectively begin to happen after the Church service. But it literally starts in the Church, where everybody would dress to their best, if only to show to the rest that they were at least of a well to do background. During the Church service, the smartly dressed peasants would try to undo each other before the local Priest by donating more money to the Church even when the givers have some dirty history as village thieves, adulterers and common criminals.

While the majority of the families are in Church, back home, women are busy cooking at a common place agreed by the villagers. That would be the place all the villagers would converge with all their children to have a Christmas feast. Even the little ones would have at least some shirt on their backs as they accompany their nicely clad mothers and fathers.

The foods the folks Ate

The only dish cooked on Christmas day was Chicken and meat -period! No vegetable would be served on Christmas largely because no Acholi man slaughters his Chicken, goat or cow just to be feasted on like that. Between January and December, if folks ate chicken or meat at all then it was because of the following reasons; there was marriage feast, some communal farming was organized and those who dug a whole acre would be feed for their labor. The other situation which would occasion the eating of cow/goat meat would be if the animal died of accidental strangulation in the kraal. Outside these reasons, no villager would have any reason to eat meat or chicken. The only time a family would enjoy meat would be if the family head was a hunter good at trapping wild game for home consumption.

Over eating, adultery, murder and divorce

Given this eating pattern of mainly vegetables for most of the year, folks looked to Christmas as a day for great feasting on meat predominantly. People were allowed to eat to their fill and to drink as much as they could handle. It was largely for this reason that Christmas in my village was such a dangerous affair. The overdrinking and the indulgence engaged in on Christmas day by village folks would make Jesus cry. Once the drinking peaks up, the next dreadful things that would happen would be dancing and singing. But as the night progressed, men would begin to poach on their neighbors wives and this was basically where Christmas day would begin to get nasty because those caught in the act of adultery would either be killed by their drunk arresters or sent to jail the following day unless they can pledge to pay a fine to the aggrieved husband whose was wife was involved. The women caught in the act of adultery would be severely beaten, maimed or even divorced altogether for giving in to adultery.

Boxing Day and the Busy Bodies of the Police

If there was any day that was remembered for subjecting the Police and other law enforcement authorities into busy bodies, then it was Boxing Day. The morning of 26th December was one in which news of serious injuries, killings, divorce, death as result of over eating and drinking would fill the air. Many of those who only the previous day were very smart in the Church would be spotted with plasters across their foreheads and torn shirts as a result of the violence they suffered on 25th December. Christmas, as we used to know it was a matter of life and death but the folks loved it all the same with every bit of their lives.

Makabagong mga kagamitan kung kayat ba makabago na din ang mga prinsipyo?

Why are we taking immorality like it’s a normal thing to do? We act that it’s usual and acceptable to the community. Parang wala na ngang pakialam ang mga tao kung kabit ka. Eh ano naman, pakialam ba nila. Un ang uso dba?

I knew and met a lot of women, young, beautiful, fresh and intelligent. They’ve fallen to a married men. They commit into a relationship where in they might sue of adultery and they don’t care. The reason is they are madly inlove. Yes, it might be an invalid reason. They chose to love the wrong person, a commited man. Eh, inlove nga, pakialam niyo ba?

In this state of high emotion, where two people were madly inlove, they don’t care anymore if they ruin a family. If what other people may say. If they hurting somebody. What important is, they are happy.

Bakit nga ba naiinlove ang isang babae sa may asawa na? Someone told me that “Wala na kasi akong makitang binata, eh di may asawa na lang”. Which make me smile. Kalokohan.

Some chose to love a commited man to get security, in financial aspects. Masusunod ang luho mo. Easy money.

Pero mas pipiliin mo pang lumusong sa putikan, maging madumi kesa sa maglakad sa tuyong lupa at maging malinis. We can never control our heart, we can never choose who to love. Is this enough reason to let go and forget the moral lessons that we learned in school and from the bible?

Sabi nga sa text, ANG PAG-IBIG HINDI INAANTAY, SAPAGKAT ITO’Y HINDI KUSANG DUMARATING, ITO’Y INAAGAW, PARA MAY THRILL.

But here’s my word, Karma works in mysterious way.

The couple had a six month free accommodation. The amorous man had pay for his adulterous behavior.

In one of the suburbs of Kampala city, a Landlord who thought having tenants living in his apartment was also a license to poach on their wives, got a rude shock of his life when he was caught red-handed in bed with one of his tenant’s wife. Many tenants residing at the apartment of this fairly old retiree were always suspicious of the manner in which he fraternized with the housewives living in his buildings whenever their husbands were away.

On this fateful day, one of the tenants returned home from work a little earlier than usual, only to find the old Landlord busy on his marital bed with his wife. He sounded an alarm and a very violent fight erupted in which the old Landlord got a very serious beating. The commotion generated by this late evening fight attracted onlookers, including other tenants living in the same apartment. It was evident by the comments of onlookers that they enjoyed the battering the Landlord was receiving from the fairly youthful man whose wife was at the center of this controversy.

The local officials got wind of the fight and rushed to save the Landlord who by now was bleeding profusely through the nose and mouth. The angry man whose wife was found in bed with the Landlord was later restrained and a round table discussion to amicably resolve the problem was initiated.

It was at this round table talks that a verdict was passed by the local officials to the effect that the Landlord pays compensation to the aggrieved man for sleeping with his wife. Unfortunately for the Landlord, he did not have any cash at hand, so he offered to pay for his sins in kind.

He therefore, agreed to keep the aggrieved man in his building for 6 months, during which period, the couple would not be paying rent. This sounded like a good deal because both the aggrieved man and his wife were later seen smiling after the round table talks.

Many husbands who have not started to cheat on their wives, but the signs of emotional adultery are already showing.

Here is a story about carol husband and his secret text messages:

“I waited for my husband to go to sleep late one night and then went through the phone that he uses for his business. This was my first time doing this because recently he has been receiving numerous text messages late at night and the phone even vibrates on weekend and evenings.

There is something which made me feel this way. The text messages was so often late at night and my husband had not even mentioned anything about work related issues. After checking the text messages, I discovered that the name of one woman kept appearing. I read some of the messages and they had nothing to do with his business. I decided to confront him but he got upset and blame me for snooping into his phone.

Her message indicated that she enjoyed being his secret lover and the sex was wonderful. She said the interest she had is more just being his lover and that she wanted to become more than friends.

This is a confession by carol but she is not alone in going through the cell phone of her husbands to check call records, text messages or emails.

New technology is out such as cell phones, emails they come with new challenges. It also gives opportunities to spouses to engage in adultery or cheat on their spouses. After finding some signs of adultery like your husband having a secret lover sending messages, it has developed into something more than friendship, You will experience some of these reactions:

1. Guilt- By going through the phone of your husband, you may feel guilty of invading. Don’t feel guilty, especially if his cell phone keeps vibrating at the late hours of the night.

2. Depressed- It makes you feel down and depressed when you find out that your husband has another woman who is his “secret lover”.

3. Anger- Since your husband seems to be putting more effort in his new secret lover, you will feel angry as if he should have directed those efforts to your marriage or even discuss the problem.

4. Neglect- This results from the strain in your marriage. You feel as if you didn’t try to resolve the problem or responsibilities.

If your husband is having a personal relationship with another woman, it is a sure sign of adultery. You should be the only lover in his life, this in turn makes intimacy not trustworthy. If your husband is receiving secret text messages from another woman or seeks sex elsewhere, this is definitely cheating.
