You can't keep a tough old bird down because old birds are survivors. Giving in to injury just isn't something I do easily.

There’s nothing like a fall to make one contemplate the whole mystery of life. Ten long weeks ago I was lying on the floor, wondering if I’d ever get up again. My injured pride and the sudden pain were so intense that I was unable to appreciate the sparkling clean floor tiles beneath me. I was a bird with a broken wing, unable to fly, or in my case an injured foot and unable to walk. Grateful for the nearby carpet, I crawled away, leaving my pride in a puddle on the floor. My strutting days appeared to be over.

Little did I realise at the time, I’d be crawling, hopping, hobbling or just stopping still for at least ten weeks. Definitely no striding, nor much else for that matter. I was brought to a standstill, shot down like a duck during the hunting season. I was advised to take it easy. You can see how little my doctor knows me. This girl thinks easy is for the newly hatched, not an old bird like me. I take life head on, which is probably why my injury took so long to heal.

Aha the 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than a hundred muscles, tendons, and ligaments comprising my foot thought. We have her now. And have me they nearly did. I hated immobility and vowed to defeat it. The news that I could be spending Christmas in plaster made me feel like a trussed turkey on the family Christmas table. There appeared to be no escape.

But escape I did. After visiting the wise old owl at the orthopaedic clinic four days before Christmas, I was finally given the verdict. I would walk again and avoid the seasonal pitfall of getting plastered. I could walk on my own two feet, but recovery would take time. Stay away from danger I was told. Keep swallowing pain killers and all will be well with the world. I left the clinic wondering if wine and pain killers did the same job.

Well, to stop this short story from turning into a book, that wise owl was right. With a little bit of rest and sensibility I can now pronounce myself mobile. I can walk, on both feet, with only the slightest hint of a wobble. In fact at times I’m almost striding. No longer feeling like an old bird, I have the enthusiasm of a spring chicken.

2012 is going to be a great year. Happy New Year to you all.

Loneliness is a very big concern for many elderly people. As you age, you often witness your close friends, family, and neighbors pass on. If an older person did not choose to have children, the effects of aging may be detrimental. And in holiday time, depression is often the result.

We are all good about giving food and toys to others at Christmas time, but what about the rich, lonely elderly? Sometimes just a simple gesture of kindness like offering to drive an elderly person to a church service is very appreciated. If you have time, offer to go to the service with them. Or offering to have someone in your home on the holiday itself is a welcome change to their lonely apartment full of sad memories.

Visiting the nursing home around the holidays is a great way to share. Bringing caroling books to host a Christmas carol sing a long is one of many ideas. Help an invalid decorate their tree that is now a cumbersome task for them.

I have been guilty of spending a whole afternoon with an elder person that I was not looking forward to. You lose track of time enjoying their wonderful stories and cannot wait to return. A dreaded meeting suddenly becomes a joy. And most elderly people are just so pleased to have your company.

One day some of us are going to be that older person without anyone. You may live to be over one hundred and may outlive your children. No one ever expects to be the sole survivor of a generation or anticipates all the things it may mean. So this holiday season, open up your home and your heart to a special persons with no one left. It is so easy to make a large difference with your presence. Someday that recipient may be you or someone you once loved and cared about.

When entering a traditional nursing home, we become non-peoplefor the most part. How you might say, read on.

This subject and practice in nursing homes is a big one for many residents. Most nursing homes, older ones especially, try to put two people to a room, with very little space for their personal items. Nursing homes, in the practice of warehousing and greedy owners, try to squeeze as many people into a facility as possible. Hence the term; ‘A 120 bed facility or 100 bed facility.’ Now, as a resident I am unpersonalized even more by labeling me as a ‘bed’ instead of a person. When entering a nursing home, I not only have to reduce my personal items to a small side of my ‘dorm’ room I also have to probably share a damn room with whomever the facility decides I will share it with. Nursing homes, except for those who want a room mate, or married couples, should all be private, one person occupancy rooms offered to everyone. As a Social Services Director, I saw so many people shoved into rooms with people they were absolutely not compatible with and they were miserable. If there was room, many times there was not, the resident could ‘complain’ and get another room, if available. Every resident should have access to the bathroom and windows and room for visitors in their room without having to encroach on another resident’s private space. Many times encroaching on the other person’s space in a room cause a lot of problems and I do not blame the resident complaining. I would not like whatever I own to be confined to a small square of a room with someone I do not want to be sharing with anyway. It is also not fair that certain people, in a two person mandatory situation, get the window bed. This is why everyone should have a private room so everyone has equal access to the windows and bathrooms without inconvenience to a room mate. If a person is coming into a facility to recuperate and eventually go home, this sort of warehousing of people was not very conducive to the person’s well being and did nothing to help them recover. This practice is appalling and should not be going on in facilities at all. People should have private rooms, if they want and should have places in the bathrooms in the room to shower, bathe and storage for personal items. I recall a lady wanting her blow dryer only to have maintenance come tell me no one is ‘allowed’ blow dryers or curling irons. For heaven’s sake, when I get old I guess I am too stupid to know how to use such items without causing physical harm to myself. Maintenance’s concern was that a resident would leave the irons plugged in and cause a fire. Well, there is staff on the premises at all times, I would imagine one of those staff members should have the wherewithal to check for such occurrences and turn the damn thing off. All of this requires getting over the mindset that I am 2 years old when I enter a nursing home and cannot possibly have any kind of a ‘normal’ life such as I was used to.

For imagination to roam free, you must have confidence in yourself and not be afraid of looking partner. What difference does the extra pounds, it’s essential to feel sexy in the eyes of her lover! To increase your confidence in yourself, find out your skills. Take a piece of paper and write five things you like about your physique. Submit your partner to do the same and you will see that when you feel good about your sexual desire is the highest.

Second Stage: sexy wardrobe. No way to get into bed with an XXL shirt or pajamas! It’s time to pull desuurile with lace and transparent.

Days 3 and 4 – the temperature increases

At the restaurant on the beach, in the car, any place is suitable for a subtle seduction. Patting him discreetly, and whisper sweet words and see him passionately that you can not go all the way is a very exciting game, and once you are alone in your hotel room, changing the facts will be more intense and more agreeable. Do different games to extend foreplay in bed.

Days 5 and 6 – Take time to love

Two holidays are ideal for relaxation, to escape the busy schedule and to be back “on the same slice with your partner by finding the moments of intimacy often forgotten in the face everyday problems.

For example, the awakening is one of the moments of the day carer can take advantage of the most partner: will not rush into cup of coffee, you love and you will feel entertained all day.

Days 7 and 8 – Season nights

How to make the nights less predictable? You propose to his partner to play a game: both the papers write sexual fantasies that I’ve never dared to put them into practice and then pull one at random. Each will then have to make more realistic scene.

You can bring other delights in bed: strawberries, champagne, chocolates. Whichever method is chosen for seasoning sex parties, is essential to have fun and discover new possibilities of pleasure, without having to be afraid of taboos.

This revision note is on Japan, and the casestudy on their changing population.
Enjoy!

Japan Facts to Remember:

- 20.8% of Japan’s population is aged 65+

- 26.8 million people are on pensions in Japan

- Over 25,000 people are over 100 years old

- The average of a Japanese citizen is 44 (the highest in the world)

- The birth rate is below the replacement level (number of children needed for the population to remain constant, normally around 2.1)

- Only 13.6% of Japanese people are aged 15 or under.

Japan has an aging population. This is defined as ‘a population with a rising average age’.

What is causing the changes in Japan’s population structure?

People in Japan now have longer life expectancies. Women, statistically, will live to 85, men to 79. This is because people tend to have healthier diets, consuming low amounts of fat and salt. Japanese people also have access to excellent health and benefit systems, meaning they have good quality of life. 8.2% of the GDP (gross domestic profit) is spent on their health system, where 210 doctors serve 100,000 people. In the UK there are only 190 doctors per 100,000 people. Japan is also one of the most wealthy countries in the world, and is a member of the G8.

Since 1975 the Birth rate in Japan has been decreasing. This is believed to be because the age at which women are giving birth to their first born has risen. Over 36 years, from 1970-2006 the mean age rose 3.6 years, from 25.6 years old to 29.2 years old. During this time period the amount of people who did not get married rose, and the age of first marrying also rose. This decreased the birth rates as people have less time to have babies, decreasing the amount each couple has.

What are the implications?

The amount of elderly people in the country will rise, this will lead to:

· Increased cost of pensions, as more people require payouts for longer.

· Due to lack of workforce there will be less people to pay taxes, so taxes will have to rise to keep the country working

· Increase of people living in elderly care homes. From 2000 the government has made every citizen pay £20/month to pay for these nursing home places.

· More money needs to be spent on healthcare. To raise more money Japanese citizens now have to pay 20% of their medical costs. Previously they only had to contribute 10%.

There can be few things that have appeared in the media over the past week that have caused as much furore as the aging test announcement, and the ramifications thereof.

WOW! I hardly expected to rouse such a storm of debate about this topic, when I read about it on the web, but I simply had to write the post, because the ethical issues involved are truly immense, and the possibilities endless for actions that people might take, once the test results are in. OK, right now this is a little far-fetched, because the experimental technology, though proven, is still relatively new, and truly accurate predictions on death dates may be some years away yet.

The pace of change, these days, however, in terms of advances in technology is frighteningly rapid, at times, and who can say for sure that it will not, within a few years, have reached the stage of telling the tested person in what year and month their death will probably occur? Imagine that the person concerned is you, and you want to be remembered in history for a long time. You might have months or years to plan your final actions, meaning they could be as dramatic as you like.

You could commit some unspeakable crime, knowing that you had almost no time left in which to answer for it, or get yourself into a mountain of debt that you would never have any intention of paying off. You could fulfill those boyhood ambitions without fear of reprisal because you would know that time was not really on your side, except in the most perverse sense of all. The questions raised by this news are endless.

If it does, as those announcing it expect, really take off, in terms of uptake, how then will the fact that a large swathe of the population know roughly how much time they have left sit with those who do not? Would anyone be happy going into partnership with someone who was confident of living for another forty years, say, when the other half of the equation had no idea?

Would a man who had been tested really not want his bride-to-be to undergo the test, to make sure they had time to look forward to, and would he call the marriage off if her result was unfavorable? These may seem like stupid questions now, but in a society where the ability to foretell lifespan became the normal thing, then nothing could be done about insurance, business generally or even relationships if the people concerned had not had the test.

That is, I hate to say it, the nightmarish possibility that such tests throw up. Big Brother wanting even more of a handle on the citizens through knowing roughly how long, barring accidents, they should be around for. It is very easy to see that the age test could well become mandatory for every child at puberty, easing the planning burden for pension provision, schools building, housing needs and so on.

WHOA! I hear you all crying out, this is the worst picture you could paint, and surely this simple test, with the obvious medical benefits in research terms, could never be allowed to get so out of hand, surely not? The problem is that it is a private company starting off the testing process, and the profits lure must be huge, because they propose to offer humanity an answer to a question that has plagued every human on earth since the beginning. WHEN WILL I DIE?

Wisdom may dictate that this testing process, still in the infancy stages, be regardedby everyone with a huge pinch of salt, but the urge to know will override every hint of common sense, and the laboratory involved will be besieged with applicants. I will definitely not be among them, because I really do NOT want to know, and feel truly sorry for those that think they do.

Thought on aging from someone who does not want to grow older.

It was never my intention to get older. After all, what’s the point? You just become an old person. When I was in my 40’s, I started looking back at my life in my 20’s. I used to think, “If I only knew then, what I know now,” or words to that effect. Now that I am in my 60’s the only thing that comes to mind is, “I wish I were 40 again.”

I came of age during the “hippie” generation; I adopted the dress, I spoke the language, I agreed with some of their social stances, but never with their thoughts on government. I never adopted the ideology of the more government, the better. I might have been wet behind the ears, a, “young whipper snapper,” as an older person might say back in the day, but after studying the “great depression” in high school, and seeing the damage done by FDR, I was no fan of large government.

I was never driven by party ideology; I registered as a Republican, much to the chagrin of my loyalist Democrat parents. I think my mother cried for a week and my father muttered for the longest time, “I’ll never get him into a yeshiva after this,” I was supposed to be a rabbi; but a Republican rabbi. As my father used to say, “Who has ever heard of such a thing?”

I never made it to Yeshiva; it seems I asked too many of the wrong questions and I had the wrong answers to their questions. While studying about Noah, the rabbi asked me why I thought God was so angry with Noah. I answered, “Because he named one of his sons, Ham.” Perhaps I should have had Jackie Mason’s agent represent me.

I didn’t become the political “animal” that I am today. I was politically aware; I always leaned to the right; I voted for Nixon because he promised to bring the “boys” home from ‘Nam. Gerald Ford was a nice guy but he sure was clumsy. Then we got a “good ol’ boy” peanut farmer from Georgia. In between those presidents, I became a born again Jewish believer.

I left behind my “hippie ways;” most of them anyways. I realized I was getting older throughout various stages on my road to senior “maturity.” Even before my 40th birthday, I recalled an incident, which in retrospect was a road sign. I was working on my car; doing a tune up as I recall; when my son pulled up next to me, his stereo blasting out some mind numbing noise. Before he could say a word, I yelled, “Turn down that damn noise!” It hit me immediately; I had become my father. I never considered the music I listened to as “noise.” My father did; as he got older, his hearing got worse and in his opinion so did my music. The old maxim, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree,” seems to be true after all.

I don’t recall having a mid life crises in my 40’s. My son tells me that I have begun to suffer selective memory loss. He points to my chosen means for getting around right after my 40th birthday. It is true that I purchased a classic sports car while in my 40’s, and it is true that my son, who sold me the car, said for a man my age it wasn’t a car.

To be fair, I truly was in need of a car; my wife had blown up the engine in hers. In addition, I was in need of a mini-vacation from my wife, after all, she did blow up the engine in her car, and my son lived and sold cars in Tallahassee. A call to my son and within hours, he found me a car; a 1988 Nissan 300ZX. It was in garage condition, all leather interior, T-top, 5 – speed manual transmission and only 125,000 miles. To those who do not believe in God, I often tell them this story. I need wheels; they are available to me well within the budget 400 miles from home, and it will take me 4 days to complete the deal. I get a mini-vacation from my wife. After all, she did blow up her engine.

My son referred to my new car as a “penis extension.” He said a man my age drives this type of car to impress the ladies. As one who is married, and has been for over 30 years, it never entered my mind. It was my drive home that I realized what he meant. More than one college girl waved, honked, or flashed me as they went past me or I went past them.

Okay, so maybe I was having a brief mini mid-life type of crises. My son thought it was some kind of poetic justice that I fractured my left ankle in a garage that specialized in Nissans. They catered specifically to the owners of Z’s and ZX’s. I had to sell the car; I could not drive it; my left ankle was fractured in three places. I was in a cast for almost a year. Here I am in my 60’s wishing I had my 300ZX back.

Like my parents, my grandparents, and even their grandparents, I have come to realize that, as one gets older, we tend to remember the good times much better than the bad times. There are exceptions; the great depression comes to mind. To hear my parents tell it, they learned their frugality because of the depression. My generation couldn’t relate; okay, we had the malaise of the Carter administration; thankfully, more of my generation paid attention to the true American history and didn’t repeat mistakes made by my parent’s generation. We didn’t buy into the socialism of the left; we elected Reagan.

It seems like a life time ago; I mean, I was in my 40’s. In my parent’s house, as in many a liberal house, there was a constant moaning and groaning, and gnashing of teeth. The media fed the frenzy followed closely by all those intellectual giants from the left coast. Who knew Meryl Streep knew so much about apple farming that her impassioned plea for “the children” would stop the use of a chemical that had no effect on humans.

To some, Oliver North was a hero; to others, he should have been brought up on charges of treason. To me, he was a man doing his duty as he saw fit to do it within the parameters given because of some liberal ideology that was still pervasive in Congress. It seemed so many on the left fell down the rabbit hole along with Alice. Many of them it seems are still down there considering some of their recent actions.

By the time I was setting up my home in my 20’s, cable television was just being introduced. At the time, every one marveled at the technology. No longer did we need to fine tune a station in. I realize that some will read this and wonder what I mean by “fine tuning.” Find someone old enough to be your grandfather if you don’t have one of your own. Of course, when you do, be prepared to hear this as well, “Why I remember a time…”

Looking back on early ESPN before it really took off; and a cable channel just for weather; who knew? For those in their twenties right now, you look back to your high school days and get a little nostalgic.

I am 60 plus a couple or so more. Actually, I just celebrated the 37th anniversary of my 21st birthday. I look back to my generation and some of the things we accomplished. I also look back and see some of the most stupid decisions ever made by a sober man. I look back and I see one of the most principled men of the 20th century looked liberalism right in the eye and say, “Go ahead, make my day.” I still miss Ronnie; a lot of Americans do.

I try not to look too much to the future. First of all, having seen where we came from to where we are, the future is not looking real good. I am hopeful about our son; he and his wife are planted in a very good church. I sometimes wondered if he ever fully understood some of the political truths I tried to impart to him while he was coming of age. Then I heard him explain his stand to a friend and I just smiled; he got the message.

Growing older, I have learned some hard and fast rules that are true in our youth, in our coming of age, our golden years, and right up to the last breath. First, “Never wrestle with a pig. You both get dirty and the pig likes it.” The next rule; “Never try to teach a pig how to sing. It annoys the pig and it wastes your time.” Third, “Life is like a roll of toilet tissue. The closer you come to the end, the faster it unravels.”

Finally, I discovered that when you enter an elevator for a long vertical lift and over the intercom, you hear a song from your youth, and you sing along, you are an old person. I know this to be true, it happened to me. I often laughed at my parents for reliving the past; whether good times or not, they had something to smile about. They looked forward with trepidation because of the youth of my generation. For the most part, I think we turned out okay. It’s this next generation coming up that should make us worry.

By the '50s, the famous doctor gave Alfred Kinsey released a study suggesting that sex reduces stress and that people who do have frequent sex and orgasms are "violent and less hostile than those who feel sexual pleasure Mayrarely.

Studies that followed claimed that regular sex and orgasms translate into lower rates of mortality in men and women. A study done by 1976, published in “Pyschosomatic Medicine, focused on the latter and announce that attainment of orgasm has a negative impact on cardiovascular health of women.

A specialist in endocrinology then mention that the ladies who have sex at least once a week were much more likely to have a menstrual period and normal levels of estrogen in the blood.

And a healthy level of this hormone maintains healthy cardiovascular system, lowers cholesterol or the appearance of the skin. Details.

Endorphins, fenietilamina, dehidroepiandro-steron

The first sure you know the read – those hormones are released during orgasm which relax parts of the brain responsible for fear and anxiety. Fenietilamina, another substance released into the body at times of maximum pleasure, directly affects the appetite – drops a lot.

While serotonin has a “calming” the cravings of junk-food-type food, some researchers write papers. Last substance, impossible to pronounce at first, increasing its level after orgasm and, among other things, slows aging.

About dehydroepiandrosterone is known and that it improves brain function, metabolism, immune system and the cardiovascular, and skin health.

The increase puts the shoulder and the high level of immunity – all thanks to orgasm – the immunoglobulin A. “The benefits far outweigh the borderline bedroom sex” – tells us psihosexologul Potenteu Emilia.

“Oxytocin, a hormone released during and after a game of sex , makes more generous partners, calmer and more beautiful.

Orgasm help and building self-esteem. It is known as the best Algocalmin to reduce headaches and migraines even stronger. During sexual stimulation, the body produces a hormone that reduces the urge to smoke. Sex in itself helps to burn calories. “

Less sick leave, many professional accomplishments

No caption is wrong, a link between these things and orgasm there, some sexologists say that based on research on working for many years. People who have an orgasm to enjoy life fully and, unlike others, they take fewer days off from work because of illness. Theorists claim medical data showing that orgasm helps the body fight infection.

A certain doctor in the UK psychologist, Lisa Turner goes further and says that women who have regular orgasms are more healthy and more carried out professionally.

For a fulfilling intimate life leads them to “share huge” energy, strengthen their health, increasing their ability to concentrate. One recent study trying to understand how men influence his orgasm was made in Melbourne and says that ejaculation frequency between 20 and 50 years dramatically reduced the risk of prostate cancer. In addition, those who regularly have orgasms and less risk of suffering from painful urination in old age. And now ready with the theory …

As you get older things become harder to remember, or are they easier to forget? Check lists can be a wonderful friend in times of need, but you need to work at developing a positive relationship with them.

Once I could remember a whole week’s activities without having to write anything down. Times of appointments, tasks that were looming, even whole grocery lists nestled in my head and reappeared with instant recall, like a genie being summoned from a jar. Now my memory is more of a forgettery, and I’ve resorted to making lists. The trouble with lists is I either forget I’ve made them, or I forget where the list was written.I’m trying to develop a more positive relationship with my lists so that they work for me.

One thing I’ve always been good at is working to a deadline. This can be a bonus when it comes to working with lists. I can procrastinate better than most people, but once I know a deadline is close I kick into action and get things done. Life does get rushed at times because of this, but I get there in the end, thanks to the check lists I’ve created.

Sometimes my check lists are a bit like weeds in a garden, growing out of control more quickly than I care for them to. Like weeds in the garden, uncompleted items glare at me from the page, resembling a tangled mess. All relationships need to be worked at, and lists are no different. I feel guilty when I appear to be failing.

My current check list has some serious stuff on it, things like the travel insurance I keep forgetting to organize, liaising with the cat minder before we leave, cancelling the domestic flight we’re no longer taking and getting some new asthma inhalers. Other things, such as packing clothes, are easier to remember.

Once I could prioritize list items easily, making sure important things were achieved and then less important things had more likelihood of being achieved as well. Now I prioritize according to the enjoyment I get from doing something. No matter how important it is, if I think it sounds as if it belongs in the too hard box, that’s where it’s likely to stay. I have this misguided notion that at my age I should be allowed to make choices. I need to be in the mood for getting things done.

There are some regular items that get crossed off my list every time, things such as writing an article and meeting friends for coffee. I remember eye appointment dates months in advance, but can never remember when it’s time to have a hair cut.

One thing I’ve learned as I’ve developed my list making skills may be considered cheating. But it’s only cheating if you tell anyone you’ve done it. I’ve become really good at adding things to the list after they’ve been done, just so I have something to cross off at the end of the day. Not the most honest approach to my check list relationship, but hey, I’m not perfect.

If you’re like me and are starting to forget important things, or choose to place them in your forgettery instead of your memory, I suggest you too make a list and develop a positive relationship with it. Don’t just put the important, boring stuff on your list. Put the fun things there too – all relationships need some fun times. Weed your list at the end of the day, then settle down for a good night’s sleep.
