It was 70 years ago today, December 7th 1941, that a fleet of Japanese fighter-bombers carried out the most ferocious of unprovoked attacks on US navy vessels anchored in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Hundreds gasped as the Japanese planes came into view, dropping bombs from the air.
