Davy Crockett was America's first folk hero. In the song, he was said to have been born in the mountains of Tennessee and killed himself a bear when he was only three. That was a little exaggerated but Davy Crockett was a man of the people. Although he had very little education he was elected to congress in 1826.

Davy Crockett had very little formal education but even so, he read Shakespeare and Ovid and was elected to the United States congress in 1826. He wasn’t above using political tricks and was one of he first politicians to play “poor boy” as a gambit against his well off constituents. Davy Crockett lived up to his promises and always stood up for the settlers against the land speculators. He lived by the motto, “Be sure you are right, then go ahead. Crockett voted against Andrew Jackson’s Indian Removal Bill and said such a bill would make him ashamed till the day of judgement. Davy Crockett was too honest to be a politician and was defeated in the 1836 congressional race.

Image via Wikipedia

Davy Crockett, one of nine children was born in 1786. His parents were of Scotch Irish stock from Ulster. They were a hard scrabble family and the first settlers to call themselves Americans. Davy Crockett wasn’t born in the Tennessee Mountains as most people believe. He was born in western South Carolina which later became Tennessee. David preferred his formal name and never signed his name as Davy Crockett. Every story told about Davy has truth in part but many stories are wildly exaggerated.

Davy Crockett was hounded by debt all his life. He mostly supported his family as a game hunter. He was well known for fighting with Andrew Jackson in the “Creek War” which was a civil war between the Creek Indians. Crockett had an understanding of nature and could read signs of shadows, sun, animals, clouds, weather and all things pertaining to nature. He traveled the forests in summer when the land was lush and winter when everything was frozen.

Image via Wikipedia

Davy Crockett was a plain spoken man who didn’t pull any punches. After his defeat in 1836, Crockett told his fellow congressmen, “You may all go to Hell, and I will go to Texas.” Much to his wife’s dismay he left his family to try to make his fortune. Crockett did not go to Texas to fight for liberty. He had never heard of the Alamo and had never considered fighting any war with Mexico. In spite of that, he did stay and fight with Jim Bowie and Col. William Travis. In doing so, he and the men who died with him transformed the Alamo into an American cultural icon. Davy Crockett was America’s first real folk hero, and it could be said that he invented Texas.

Battle of San Jacinto: News style
made by my brother, Carlos :)

The Texans had started to rebel against the Mexican government because they had not followed the Constitution of 1824. The Texas had captured Gonzalez, Goliad, and San Antonio. Santa Anna, the president and general of Mexico at that time, decided to go himself to stop this rebellion. He captured the Alamo and killed everyone there, but spared some people like Susanna Dickinson, so that she could spread the news of the Alamo being captured. When Sam Houston, the chief of the regular army of Texas, heard of this, he ordered to retreat eastward. This retreat is called the Runaway Scrape, where the Texas army and the settlers all moved to the east. Meanwhile, Urrea and his men were attacking the cities of Gonzalez and Goliad. They captured James Fannin’s troops there and executed them. Some of them survived. Santa Anna went in pursuit of Sam Houston. On April 11, 1836, the Texans received the Twin Sister, which were two guns, and a cannon. On April 17, Houston took the road to Harrisburg, instead of Louisiana, and the next day reached White Oak Bayou. On the evening of April 19, Houston’s forces crossed Buffalo Bayou to the west side about two miles below Harrisburg. At dawn on April 20, the Texans captured a boat that contained supplies for Santa Anna. On April 21, they were eager to attack the Mexicans. They learned that General Martin Perfecto de Cos had crossed Vince’s Bridge with some reinforcements. Houston ordered Erastus (Deaf) Smith to destroy the bridge so that neither of the troops could escape. Houston decided to attack. In the afternoon at about 3:30, while all was quiet because the Mexicans were taking a nap, Houston and his troops attacked. Some Texans screamed “Remember the Alamo” or “Remember Goliad”. The Texans defeated the Mexicans in less than 18 minutes. Santa Anna had escaped during the battle however. Houston and his troops found him the next day in a marsh, dressed like a common soldier. Houston didn’t kill Santa Anna, but he ordered him to tell all the Mexicans to leave. Then the Texans won their independence! The freedom of Texas from Mexico resulted in the U.S. getting to own the states of Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Utah, and parts of Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma. This meant a tremendous victory for the U.S. because it got almost one-third of the land it has now.

The ghosts that haunt the Alamo.

GHOSTS OF 1836.

THE Alamo was the scene of great tragedy, great sacrifice and greater courage in March, 1836. This mission, turned fortress was the turning point in the Texans’ fight for win independence from Mexico. Now it may be the most haunted site in America. National park rangers, police officers and members of the public have reported seeing apparitions of the defenders.

The commonly seen spirit is the transparent is that of Davy Crockett. He is wearing buckskin clothing, his renowned coonskin cap and carrying Old Betsy, his long flintlock rifle.

Many local residents claim that they have been woken up by the sound of a horse galloping towards the shrine at the end of March each year. It is believed that the unseen rider is James Allen, the last messenger to leave the Alamo with despatches from Colonel Travis to General Houston and that he is still trying to deliver the reply.

A figure dressed in early 19th Century clothing and carrying of long rifle is often seen walking along the streets. His reply when asked by passers-by is that he is trying to get back to the Alamo. It is thought that he is Louis Moses Rose, the only man to flee the fortress and that is trying to rejoin his colleagues and redeem his honour.

Other people have reported hearing shouts, screams and the sound of battle around the area. Other paranormal phenomena include eerie cold spots throughout the buildings, vanishing lights and unexplained noises.

The bodies of the garrison were burnt outside the Alamo and the ashes buried in an unknown mass grave.

A more recent spirit is that of John Wayne who produced, directed and starred in the monumental epic film, The Alamo. He insisted on absolute accuracy and became obsessed with the history of the siege. After building a replica of the fortress, he recreated an entire village, which has become a tourist attraction and has been used for many other films. Shortly after his death in 1979, people reported seeing him walking through the grounds and even talking to the original defenders.

Obama and Healthcare.

Healthcare reform is a term used rather often by the Obama administration, Socialized Medicine, Single Payer System, are also used. Now as the date draws nigh for the vote to come, Obama and his cohorts are throwing up the the bulwarks so to speak, and digging in. The president has tried many times to pass health care reform during his presidency, and never has he been so close as this, yet he is still a ways off.

Healthcare reform is to President Obama, as the Alamo was to Texans. This is his major battlefield. He has put his hope, his pride, his dreams, and yes his money into this project. The Texans barred the doors, stored up ammunition, and hoarded canned food. and so President Obama has done with healthcare. He has bared the doors of his mind to the ideas and hopes of Americans, he has stored up the ammunition of blackmail, and hoarded the canned food of money, and he will not let go.

While President Obama may be the leader of America, and while he may have been the leader chosen by America, he no longer has America at heart it seems. Revealing polls show that over 50% of AMERICANS do NOT WANT healthcare reform. Why are you so silent and unbending to the people of America, Mr. President? Why do you not re-open the doors of your mind? Guide America, do not dictate it.

General Santa Anna rose to power after the siege of the Alamo, but he was soon forgotten, and so was his much revered leg.

The internet abounds with tales of weird funerals and the strange superstitions surrounding them but this true story about a Mexican president is one of the oddest modern day ones I have come across.

The funeral wasn’t for his body, it was only for one of his legs and this is how it came about.

Fall of the Alamo

Antonio de Santa Anna was the commander who, in 1836, led his troops to victory over Texan rebels at the siege of the Alamo. This was the battle that took the lives of two very famous frontiersmen: James Bowie and Davy Crockett. There were both to become well-known folk heroes. James Bowie is famous for inventing the Bowie knife and Davy Crockett for his Davy Crockett hat.

Davy Crockett

Jim Bowie

At he was wounded in 1838 doctors decided that Santa Anna’s leg needed to be amputated. The General kept the leg for four years at his residence near to Veracruz. His grip on Mexico tightened and he became a dictator with a very strong following almost like that found in a cult.

Santa Anna

It was September 1842 when his followers held a solemn procession in the streets accompanied by bands playing funeral music and laid the leg to rest at the Pantheon of Saint Paula which is a national shrine. All this was done with great respect, pomp and ceremony, as was considered due to an adored leader.

It was not long before his followers got fed up and turned their allegiance elsewhere.

When Santa Anna eventually fell from favour in 1844, the leg was stolen during the ensuing riots and has never been seen since.

The once adored political leader, Santa Anna, died in 1876 at the age of 79. He was poor, had lost his eyesight and the world ignored him. His fame was short-lived and the whereabouts of his once revered leg is still a mystery.

Believe in ghosts? If not, spend an evening walking the area in front of The Alamo. You will change your mind.

The Alamo is located in San Antonio, Tx. If you have never visited and are in the area or just in the mood for a good old fashioned ghost encounter, this is THE place to be this Halloween (or any other time, for that matter). A big battle was fought at The Alamo in 1836 with the Mexican troops of Santa Ana and the Texan troops led my William B. Travis. This battle was extremely bloody with many dead soldiers left at the sight to decompose. Those that were wounded and on the ground eventually died a slow death since there was no one around to render aid. Some of the wounded were in so much pain that they decided to just shoot themselves instead of ending up tortured by the Mexican army. Santa Ana was ruthless as he ordered any survivor to be decapitated or burned alive.

Hence, the ghosts of The Alamo. Some say that you can hear the painful moans and groans of those that lay dying. Others attest to the fact that of hearing the sounds of spurs as sodiers walked around assessing the terrible and bloody damage. Many have noted feeling cold drafts of air as they are standing at The Alamo grounds when the temperature outside is 90 degrees. Dogs that are being walked by their owners start howling and ”staring” at something that is just “not there”. Many psychics have visited The Alamo and say that there are many spirits lingering in the area. Some of these spirits are lost and are waiting for someone to help them find peace.

You might be the next one to experience these eerie encounters. You may want to book a ghost tour. They offer a 2 hour every evening at dusk. Be sure to stop by the Visitor’s Center located right in front of The Alamo. If you want a truly haunting experience, be sure to stay at one of the hotels that are in front of or next to The Alamo. I have personally stayed at the Emily Morgan….it used to be a hospital for the mentally ill. Let me just tell you, I did NOT sleep during my stay there. That was an encounter that I will never forget!

Keep up the haunting spirit…..
