Frederick Douglas was the most influential man of color in his time. An escaped slave from Maryland, he went on to become an outspoken lecturer for the freedom of slaves, and women white and black. He was taunted and threatened with death while he worked for the freedom of his people. His biography describes the horror of his life as a slave, and his escape from it.
