Information and awareness about drugs that are showing up at parties and clubs.

This I am sure isn’t news to anyone, there are drugs out there that are being introduced to not only us but our children. It is important to be educated and prepared for everything that you face in this world. You need to make wise, educated decisions about what you put into your body and what your children may be using. Club drugs are being used at raves or trances, dance clubs, and bars. Ecstasy, GHB, Rohypnol, Ketamine, methamphetamine, and LSD are some of the party drugs gaining popularity and we need to know what they are, how they effect us and that they are being added without our knowledge.

Ecstasy or MDMA, produces long-term damage to serotonin-containing neurons in the brain. Serotonin is a hormone that regulates emotion, memory, sleep, pain, and higher order cognitive processes. Ecstasy can cause a variety of behavioral and cognitive issues as well as impair memory. It is colorless, tasteless, and odorless, it can be added to beverages by individuals who want to intoxicate or sedate others. It is also called Adam and XTC. It can cause hallucinations, brain damage, psychological difficulties; including confusion, depression, sleep problems, drug craving, severe anxiety, and paranoia during, sometimes even weeks or months after use. Symptoms of Ecstasy use are muscle tension, involuntary teeth clenching, nausea, blurred vision, rapid eye movement, faintness, and chills or sweating, increased heart rate and blood pressure, a special risk for people with circulatory or heart disease. It can cause long-term memory and psychological damage.

Gamma-hydroxybutyric acid or GHB, is synthesized from a chemical used for cleaning, available in clear liquid, white powder, tablet and capsule form, it is odorless and nearly tasteless. It produces a state of relaxation that can be felt within 5 to 20 minutes after ingestion and can last up to four hours. Side effects are vomiting, liver failure, potentially fatal respiratory problems, and tremors and seizures, which can result in comas. It has been used as a date rape drug.

Roofies (Rohypnol® ) is also know as a date rape drug. When mixed with alcohol it can incapacitate anyone completely. In some circumstances it’s been know to be lethal when mixed with alcohol and/or other depressants. Other known names are “rophies,” “roofies,” “roach,” “rope,” and the “date rape” drug. A similar drug is clonazepam, marketed in the U.S. as Klonopin® and in Mexico as Rivotril®. Both are known to produce sedative-hypnotic effects including muscle relaxation and amnesia. Withdrawal seizures among people addicted to both.

Special K or K hole, is Ketamine hydrochloride, a powerful hallucinogen widely used as an animal tranquilizer by veterinarians. The high causes profound hallucinations that include visual distortions and a lost sense of time, sense, and identity. It also causes physical and mental problems including delirium, amnesia, impaired motor function and potentially fatal respiratory problems.

Methamphetamine is an addictive stimulant drug that strongly activates certain systems in the brain. Also called ice, crystal, and glass. It releases high levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine, which stimulates brain cells, enhancing mood and body movement. It also can have a neurotoxic effect, damaging brain cells that contain dopamine and serotonin, another neurotransmitter. Over time, it can cause reduced levels of dopamine which cause Parkinsons disease. One of the serious and unpleasant side effects is “meth mouth,” the users’ teeth rot from the inside out.

The effects of LSD, or acid, are unpredictable. They depend on how much is taken; the user’s personality, mood, expectations; and surroundings. The effects can include swinging through several different emotions rapidly, dilated pupils, higher body temperature, increased heart rate and blood pressure, sweating, loss of appetite, sleeplessness, dry mouth, tremors, delusions and visual hallucinations. Sometimes the user loses sense of time, and feelings of hearing colors or seeing sound and it causes people to panic. Some users experience severe thoughts and feelings, fear of losing control, fear of insanity and death, and despair. LSD can cause flashbacks and can cause long term psychoses or severe depression. Death has occurred with this drug.

Cocaine gives you a powerful high and a feeling of supremacy and it is terribly addictive and it is difficult to predict the amount or extent of control people will have over this addiction. After the first use the addicted person needs to consume more of the drug to obtain the feeling of the original high. Cocaine can cause constricted peripheral blood vessels, dilated pupils, increased body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure restlessness, irritability, and anxiety, even after use it can trigger paranoia, aggression, depression and collapsed mucous membranes, seizures, also cardiac and respiratory arrest. There is an extreme danger when mixing cocaine with alcohol, it causes a complex chemical reaction in the liver and manufactures a third substance called cocaethylene, it intensifies euphoria and can cause sudden death.

Addiction to any drug can occur after one dose. Be sure that you and your loved ones are educated and stay safe. Here are ways to help keep you from being accidentally dosed, addicted or victimized.

Don’t drink anything that you did no see poured, open yourself or that someone else gave you (other than a waiter), no matter who they are.

Always watch your drink. If you leave it unattended for ANY amount of time, dump it and get a fresh drink.

Roofies and GHB may have a bitter taste when dissolved in a drink; be alert for a strange taste.

When placed in a light-colored drink, the newer Roofies will turn the beverage blue. Dump it immediately and be especially alert.

Travel in groups.Three or more people is best. Friends should take care of friends and be observant of any strange behavior, such as slurred speech and lack of alertness.

If you think you have been drugged, ask for help IMMEDIATELY (preferably not from a stranger) and get yourself to a public place if you are not currently in one. You may have only a few minutes of alert behavior.

If you think a friend has been drugged, do not leave them alone. Seek help immediately. Contact authorities in your area and make sure people are alerted to the dangers. Do not be afraid to report a friend of this offense. If they will drug a friend then they will drug a stranger too and you are protecting more than yourself. Be aware of what’s out there.

America's tendency to sway from depressants in favor of stimulants.

“Triple Venti, nonfat, extra whip caramel macchiato!” has become ingrained in our urban and suburban coffee bar setting with the credit going to Starbucks for making it a global phenomena, yet the question must be begged: is this the right direction for America? History would say yes.

Xocoatl, pronounced “Choc-o-lat-le” is the ancestral coffee beverage that the ancient Aztecs drank made of chocolate and cocoa beans that their civilization linked closely to their Goddess Xochiquetzal, the Aztec goddess of fertility. It is no wonder that this application and utilization of the effects of caffeine had been pre-disposed to the most highly esteemed and dominant world power of its time: caffeine has temporary drug effects of stimulation of the cardiac system causing an accelerated heart rate and a sense of euphoria. This stimulant is precisely the temporary relief that a country full of overworked, underpaid citizens could use to boost productivity. Most importantly to consider though is whether the temporary effects of this drug will outlast the long term coast of human ingenuity. It doesn’t take a genius to screw in a light bulb, as they say.

For centuries creative thinkers have been using depressants to fuel their creativity and outlandishness; an action that would compliment quite considerably the atmosphere and attitudes of a thousand screaming caffeine addicts relying on external sources of release as they themselves are just wound, too damn tight. Examples of this are Ernest Hemingway a frequent alcoholic, Edgar Allen Poe who was an opium smoking, absinthe drinking psychopath teetering on the edge of sanity and total breakdown, (most notably written in his poem, “Lenore” regarding his recently departed lover) and a host of “modern” singer songwriters such as Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison (though the list could go on and on). What is the reasoning behind our nations’ undying press for stimulants when it seems as though all the adoring public wants is the expression coming from a man or woman on depressants? First guess would be American law.

Marijuana is scheduled as a Class I narcotic by the DEA, which means it has no legitimate medicinal value and that it is extremely dangerous as an ingestible substance: so much so it is on the same tier as heroin and crack-cocaine. Alcohol sales within the United States to people under the age of 21 are punishable by fine and jail time, regardless of whether the individual has enlisted between 18 and 20. Driving while intoxicated is headed towards the classification of felony with the revised, extended jail terms and increased fine amount and suspensions resultant from even one conviction at the blood alcohol level of .08. As our nation tightens its grip of Nazi-Stimulant-ism, our citizens pay the price every time they opt out of this mad rat race and choose a slower ride.
