Ophelia’s Madness and Death: The Imagery and Theories Implied Therein

Because of the fascination Ophelia provokes, she has been represented through art perhaps more frequently than any of Shakespeare’s other heroines. Like Leonardo Da Vinci and his creation of the painting Mona Lisa, Shakespeare creates Ophelia and her secrets are forever lost to speculation. So many theories surround Ophelia, yet little information in Hamlet exists to support these claims because she does not give the reader her story. What are Ophelia’s thoughts and reactions to events that intimately concern her in a male dominated play? Ophelia is one of the most veiled characters in literature, but just because she is shrouded does not mean she is not worth intent study.
