The Penguin Dictionary of Ancient History was originally published in 1994 under the Blackwell label. The Penguin version was published during the following year.

The editor Graham Speake is an expert on the literature of the Ancient Greeks, whilst the other contributors were chosen for their expertise in other areas of Ancient History, the Greco – Roman World in particular.

For example, Richard J Brickstock wrote about the coins of the Roman Empire, Tim Cornell contributed entries on the Roman Republic, James Longrigg was the expert on philosophy, Greek medicine, and ancient science. Further contributions were made by Louis P Rawlings, Ellen Rice, and also Harry Sidebottom.

Although the main emphasis is placed upon the importance of the Greco – Roman World and its achievements it does have entries on the other cultures and powers that had an influence upon, or a relationship with that world.

Over all this is a really useful guide to the Greco – Roman World.

This morning I received a delightful letter from Luciana. I have not seen since the meeting the other night and thought I do not know why he was angry. I’ve calmed down at once with some words to the mailing list, as is agreed between us. Nothing more legitimate, since we are promised. Our age would be hard to submit our correspondence to the good lady of Grevillois, and perhaps harder still excluded. We thought it best to save this disgust.

I love Luciana letters, because it shows them freer and more tender than talking. In the rare moments when we speak alone is reserved, almost cold and I am happy this reservation, the daughter of his modesty and dignity. The bond that unites us, though a bit mystical, it is still strong.
Cosmes than his brother.

August 6th.

You know I’m jealous of the interest you take in all that relates to Elena AMOUNT?

The poor girl is interesting, but I also, what the devil … And you do not think you realize it.

I go to tell the state of Elena. The crisis was expected has brought relief from fever and she begins to revive, to look around and realize things. There is still, however, changes and gaps in his memory.

‘I swear to you that, knowing the death of Mademoiselle de Boivic, the main concern of your father has been unable to make her happy.

She looked at me earnestly, and his lips trembled, but said nothing.

– Do not believe me? ‘He added with emphasis.

Elena made a gesture with his head hesitant and sad.

– Is it possible I said, ‘if someone has committed the reckless cruelty of evil speak to you his father? What have dared to say to you?

-Nothing … but I have been taught to fear it. When it was good, I threatened to send me to his side.

– Who? Is the lady of Boivic?

-Yes … Marivette well.

AMOUNT become the bogeyman, what joy this child should consider the prospect of going to live with him?

‘I have given you a very false idea he …

I tried to make him understand the life of study and work that makes AMOUNT, relationships with writers and scholars, without a woman home and how difficult it would have been to have him and educate a girl. He also painted his attacks of gout that he delivered to the care of a maid mercenaries.

‘But, aunt, do not you see that does not come to me, nor do I want? How many times have you been?

Yes, that’s true, but the truth is that there has been here. Her mother told me that in Pluviosilla has relatives with whom she spent the month. You will visit …. Before such good friends … and now …! Look, you, go for I beg you. His parents have been very good to us. Are not you going?

Tia: why should I lie? No.

– Why, tell me why? Have you had some trouble?

‘No, aunt, but not that I look decent when he shows me dismissive and cold.

It insisted the old woman, suspected, perhaps, that made me very fair reasons not to visit my friend, and simply say:

‘Well, do what you want … but do not let go to the house of Don Crisanto, do not miss Don Roman ….

– I’ll, I’ll go a thousand loves!

The doctor was not at home. I found him in the street, near the parish, and we talked at length.

– Are you going tomorrow? I’m glad, we need to get out of here. I understand what happened, all I know, in the pharmacy told me everything. I’ll talk to Castro and tell him what’s what. None of this has caused me surprise, I was not expecting me. That’s why I recommended that she not say anything, and I said: “Hush!” This is Castro Perez. He has made up his mind that Mr. Fernandez removed all the clerks, when the good man is incapable of such a thing. They also want to serve him for nothing, and does not pay due to those who serve. Do not fret: that gossip is commonplace here, and no one to lie in it ….

-You are very malicious. It is true that I was in the house of Mr. Fernandez … what?

– Go! Go! Confess you …- Luisa said, fanning herself.

-It is not surprising. You know that business …. I went to collect a signature.

– You can! If we were there …. We went to pay the visit. Since we were ashamed to see Gabby. Just imagine that over a year ago he came here. Papa said all the time: “Girls … Have you paid this visit? “We did not want to go … because … truth ….

– Do not say, ‘interrupted the dark-not say that Rodolfo is concerned!

– Goodbye! And why not? An owner is to say what they want ….

– Yes, but … not the entire world! Do not you see Rodolfo ….?

– Well I have to say! … Well, well, that … Miss that we … hits!

– Why?

– Friolera ’said Louise .- Do not you see you so full of themselves, and so proud, that everyone despises, and which says that all we are a clown … vilaverdinas, some ridiculous.

-You see, ladies: I think that girl is not proud, nor is it full of themselves, I do not despise anyone, and that, conversely, is very friendly with everyone and for sure can not tell why attributed to you ….

Coliseum: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Colosseo11.JPG

Ten years after being made head of the Roman Empire, Vespasian died and the Colosseum was still incomplete; only three of the four levels were built and the amphitheatre was covered in scaffolding. His son and heir, Titus decided that the amphitheatre would open in a year’s time, in AD 80, in gleaming white limestone. The race was one to finish the structure in time for the inaugural games.

Open it did, with ceremony, colour and crowds. The corridors were painted with the gaudiest of scenes, mostly images of the superstar gladiators that people were hoping to catch sight of. Like in stadiums today, there were kiosks were one could buy anything – food, merchandise: charms, toys, lamps, souvenirs and even women or children. In the stands, the sound was deafening not only from the spectators who were packed like proverbial sardines but from the games themselves. In the summer, there were riots from the poorer attendees who sat in 109F heat. That caused the Romans to invent the volarium, canvas awnings made like sails. The volarium was attached to 240 masts and seven brackets all operated by sailors. A retractable stadium roof would not be seen again for almost 2000 years.

Crowd control was done through tickets, bollards, gates and seating and is a model for modern stadiums. Attendees were issued with tickets not only to the amount they could afford but also according to their social status. At five bollards the crowds were kept back, had their tickets checked and sent to one of the 76 entrances. The sections of the stands corresponded to the sections of society; the higher one was in society the fewer steps to your seat. The emperor entered through his own gate or through an underground route from the palace. The senators had a direct gate to their front row marble seats. The equestrian class had three gates and a short corridor to get to their seats behind the senators. The relatives of the senators and equestrians who had gone into business were nest in line, so to speak. Then the common man was permitted to enter up stairs and corridors and stairs and……the poor sat in the rafters, on wooden benches, up 138 steps, in the blazing sun. All 50,000 could exit the various tiers of the Colosseum in 30 minutes in the same fashion. Social structure was reinforced by physical structure.

The games had begun. Titus held 100 days of games to honour his father and keep the empire he had inherited calm. In one day 100 animals and 100 criminals were slaughtered and 100 gladiators fought.t the amount and type of animals demonstrated to the crowds and the world at large the power of Rome – the emperor could have anything he wanted. It is said one emperor had the Colosseum flooded for a naval battle by reversing the drainage system but that has never been proven. Gladiators would fight dressed as mythical enemies or real Roman enemies, if one could not be imported, like the Thracians. Years later in AD 85, the emperor Domitian had the centre of the Colosseum remodelled with an underground labyrinth called the hypogeum. In the hypogeum and elevator system was installed with accompanying trap doors and pathways for the animals, weapons, gladiators, prop masters, slaves and scenery. The elevators were operated with platforms and winches; there were 30 lifts and 60 trapdoors. Holding up the image of the strength of the empire and the emperor was as much of an aim of the games as placating the mobs of Rome.

Coins of Vespasian: Image via Wikipedia

In AD 68, the Emperor Nero levied a tax increase on the citizens of Rome to build himself a golden and marble palace in the middle of Rome. This did not go down well with the beleaguered people of Rome and Nero was declared an enemy of the state by the Senate and he committed suicide. Three new emperors came and went by the end of AD 69.

Vespasian was a general who was not considered to be a contender for the throne of Rome. He was a man of no ambition who was content to remain in Jerusalem squelching the Jewish revolt and attempting to break the walls of Jerusalem. Vespasian was recalled to Rome to be emperor by the Senate and he answered the call out of duty in December 69.

Vespasian now faced a task much more difficult than Judea – how to win the love and loyalty of a million Romans, most of whom lived in tenements, in poverty and on state hand-outs. He knew that to keep the mob at bay, to keep the public peace, he needed “bread and circuses” to distract the mob. Vespasian chose to construct a new “palace of the people” on the site of Nero’s palace of gold, a palace that would be visible over all of Rome and a palace that had to hold at least 50,000 Romans. The plans for the Colosseum were in motion.

Vespasian’s family, the Flavians, were broke as was Rome was due to Nero’s excesses. They wanted this Colosseum to build their fame and influence and to create the foundations of a new dynasty of emperors. The new emperor needed money and manpower. His son Titus was in Judea and it was he who took Jerusalem in battle. Titus looted the Temple of Solomon, the Temple on the Mount, of all its treasures, its gold. Carts of booty were taken back to Rome in triumph, as well as 30,000 Jewish prisoners of war. The prisoners were not set to work on the new Colosseum, as few would have been trained in the necessary skills. They were sold as slaves in a public auction. In the Rome of the 1st century, the rich owned several hundred and ordinary folk owned at least two. The sale of these 30,000 individuals bought the labour of trained craftsmen for a year. It would take 250,000 people to construct the amphitheatre. The project was underway.

The former 6 acre palace of Nero with its accompanying temple to his stepfather Claudius was chosen to be the sight of the Colosseum; unfortunately it was on a slope. So Nero’s ceremonial lake, the size of 7 American football fields, was picked and drained to lay foundations. Drainage and preventing future flooding was going to be a major concern. A trench was built around the site 160 feet wide and 20 feet deep and lined with 10 feet of stone and cement to drain away the rain and natural water accumulation to the River Tiber, which was a mile away. The drains drained first to the Cloaca Maxima, big sewer, and ran at a slope of 2½ degrees so the water would not pool or back up. The Coliseum had 2 miles of drainage pipes that led to four main pipes that led to the Cloaca Maxima and these drained 38 gallons of water a second.

The Romans had to do a bit of inventing to build Vespasian’s “palace of the people”. They created the arch, concrete, bricks and elevators. The arch absorbed and distributed the load of the wall above it through its keystone and pillars, thereby reducing the weight of the wall in total. The Colosseum had 240 arches in total. The arches were made in a standardised way so the work gangs who built each section could be low-skilled and not require much supervision. Those with more skills made the columns and statues. Everything was repeated in the Colosseum; it was two theatres facing each other. Volcanic tufa, light but strong, was used as filler between the arches and walls of the six interior tiers of seating. 200,000 tons of heavy travertine limestone was brought in from Tivoli for the seating of the elite. The Romans, always looking for fast-setting and light material, then invented concrete out of volcanic sand and lime. Concrete was used for the arches in the seating tiers. Still looking for something lighter than concrete but as strong, led to the Romans inventing red brick. They had been using terracotta tiles for roofing and for facing material; it was a step further to make the terracotta into bricks, which were mixed in the concrete walls. Over one million bricks were produced in factories called fabricii. The ground floor levels were stone and the other levels were concrete and bricks faced in limestone. The materials were brought up to each tier by cranes operated by treadmills, blocks and tackle; they went up layer by layer. As each tier was completed it was stuccoed and painted.

The Colosseum was a marvel of engineering and ingenuity – for centuries it stood as a model for architecture and a symbol of the power of Rome.

Believe it or not, Greek mythology is one of the building blocks of modern religion. Even Christianity takes some things from this pagan belief system. Modern society needs to be reminded that just because it's classic, doesn't mean it's dead.

I’ve been studying Greek mythology since 4th grade. It’s fascinating. Ever since Christianity became popular and not under persecution by the state, all the elements and themes in Greek mythology slowly went into retirement. However, modern writers and historians have noticed what we took from them. Dan Brown, for example, wrote about pagan symbols in Christianity in Angels and Demons and The Da Vinci Code. He mentioned specifically about the Christians’ visualization of God as an old man. Very clever. I bet the Catholic Church couldn’t get around that one. Anyway, there are so many relevant myths and stories that speak out even today, with their morals and lessons and advice. The gods and goddesses themselves are a model of human vice and virtue, and an ironic display of how humans interpreted the supernatural by outlining their own flaws in possible divinities. The point is that you should not scoff at scholars of the Classics…they are onto something here. And it is quite possible that we, modern society, may still learn from the ancients and their paganism.
