Indeed, Mycenae is the most significant archaeological site on the Peloponnese in southern Greece, and is also one of the most visited. The ruined complex, which contains many of the best royal tombs, is located a little over a mile outside the modern town of Mycenae that straddles the Nafplio-Athens main road.

As you approach the site, to the left is the Treasury of Atreus. This beehive tomb or tholos is truly an impressive structure, especially considering that not a scrap of mortar was used in its construction. Go through the long corridor into the entrance of the main tomb, where the acoustics are surprisingly amazing; and observe the bulky lintel over the entrance door, it is 26 feet in length and weighs nearly 120 tons.

(Entrance to the tholos or Treasury of Atreus) Image source

The treasury is commonly referred to as the Tomb of Agamemnon; however, there is no proof to back this attribution. Although it was most certainly a royal burial tomb, the spot that German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann believed to be the tomb of Agamemnon is at the main site, farther along the road. The Treasury dates back to the 14th century B.C., and so would have been used before the time of Agamemnon.

(Interior of the Treasury of Atreus) Image source

The great palace of Mycenae was called the House of Atreus after its ruler, the son of Pelops, after whom Peloponnese derived its name. Greek dramatists speak the gruesome tale of the curse that befell the House of Atreus. Atreus’s wife Aerope was seduced by his twin brother, Thyestes. Upon discovering of Aerope’s adultery, Atreus exacted revenge on two of Thyestes’s sons, cooked and served them to their father at a feast. He then presented Thyestes the severed heads of his sons to let him know what he had eaten. Thereafter, Atreus and his descendants–who included Agamemnon, Menelaus, and Orestes–were cursed by the gods.

(Detail of two lionesses flanking the central column of the Lion Gate) Image source

The first striking feature at the main site is the famous Lion Gate, the carved lintel sitting atop the entrance. Built in the 13th century B.C., it is 12 feet wide at the base and almost 11 feet high. The lions may have been a symbol for the royal Mycenaean family as a similar design was also found on a seal discovered at the site. The grooves in the ground were made by chariots, and the holes and bolts at the side helped keep doorway firmly shut when required.

(Mask of Agamemnon) Image source

After passing through the gate, to the right are the circular remains of the royal tombs. In Grave Circle A, six graves were discovered, containing 19 bodies. This is where Schliemann found the magnificent golden funerary mask, which he believed was buried with King Agamemnon. Also unearthed here are more than 30 pounds of gold in the form of masks, jewelries, crowns and other items, all of which have become one of the top attractions at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens.

(Silver Mycenaean vase (rhtyon) shaped as a bull head at the National Archaeological Museum in Athens) Image source

One must use a bit of imagination, and possibly a map to make the most of their visit to the rest of Mycenae. There are plenty of grounds to cover, and the image that develops is that of a large royal palace, with 46-feet thick walls called the Cyclopean Walls, and an extensive populace living just outside the walls and serving the royal court. The royal palace was destroyed by fire in the 12th century B.C.; the burn marks is still very much visible on the foundation stones that remain. The site was abandoned a century after and left to decay until its rediscovery by Schliemann in 1874.

The unknown tribe involved left clues behind in that they used ceramic jars and log chests to bury their dead, many of these left behind at the various sites around the Cardoman mountains.

A major archaeological find has been discovered at Phnom Pel, which is one of four freshly dated burial sites marking what remains of a vanished Cambodian culture – dating from the last days of the Khmer Empire, which once controlled large Southeast Asian areas – over one hundred miles from its Cambodian base at Angkor.

The unknown tribe involved left clues behind in that they used ceramic jars and log chests to bury their dead, many of these left behind at the various sites around the Cardoman mountains.

The mystery tribe at least left evidence behind of their burial rituals, placing either bodies or bones in ceramic or other containers, usually left in caves as high as 160ft in caves on a cliff to keep poachers at bay. The date of these events – thanks to radio carbon dating – was between 1400 and 1600 AD, as the Khmer empire came to an end.

Scattered throughout the various caves, the containers, be they hollowed out logs or jars containing bones and teeth, or skulls peeking out of the necks of the ceramics – perched on shelves cut into the stone near the mountain base, the higher ones inaccessible to anyone but the most determined of visitors.

Jars also show signs of having been being part of a ritual, each jar having a hole drilled into the bottom, possibly just to let fluids or water that might have leaked in drain away quickly and not cause damage to the remains.

It appears that the Khmer empire impacted hardly at all on the mountainside grave-builders, people of Angkor following the Hindu and Buddhist practice of cremation, meaning that the burial containers discovered would never have featured in their rituals. This means that the newly found evidence of this unknown culture is an exciting pointer to a previously unsuspected culture, about which it is to be hoped that much more will soon be uncovered.

Archaeology in America is in infancy. Still we have discovered a civilization par excellence. This civilization was called the Mayas. They were far ahead of the Egyptians and Greeks. They had the knowledge of "zero" and build impressive architecture.

The world is till waiting for documents to prove that how did these people built up such magnificent civilization at a place, where even to this day, life is an unending struggle for survival? How was it that a flourishing civilization was created by the people of stone age? And who were these people whose classic age collapsed before even Columbus could discover America?

Some scholars were exploring the forests of Middle America. They suddenly discovered some mounds covering the buildings. These buildings were apparently ruined by the en roaching forest. It was also clear that these buildings were no ordinary structures. They were remnants of a great civilization. The scholars got interested. They excavated more and more and discovered to their utmost surprise the remains of a flourishing civilization – The Mayas, as they named it. Thus, it was as late as in the 19Th century that the secrets of a new civilization was unearthed.

For Sometime, the scholars believed that the Mayas must have been the descendants of ancient Egyptians or one of the lost tribes of Israel or Mayan culture might have been founded by the Greek colonist’s. Nonetheless, the fact remains that even today Mayan culture is one of the most fascinating ancient civilizations. Its vast buildings with modern lines, surrounded by impenetrable forest, force the scholars to discern their antecedents.

The civilization of Mayans was situated in the heart of Middle America. The civilization started in 2500 B.C and continued its progress till 34 centuries later. Throughout their period they curtailed and struggled against the invading forest. Their staple food was Maze but with it they also grew small plants which ultimately prevented the land from becoming infertile.

Like the Egyptians, even the Mayans believed in eternity. And like the pyramids of Egypt, even the Mayans built temples in the shape of pyramids. The head of these were priests who had such accurate knowledge of mathematical and astronomical tables which even Europeans did not know. The Mayans knew the art of writing, which perhaps, was one of the reasons for their being so successful. Mayan texts are found on stone tables, wooden panels, on pottery and in books made off vegetable fibre paper. However, not all of their language is known. Scholars are still busy trying to unravel the mystery of their language.

In mathematics also they were well ahead of other civilizations. They were well acquainted with the idea of zero. They fixed the Venusian year i.e. the time which the planet takes to make a complete circuit of the sun, at 584 days. The current calculation is 583.92 days. Thus they eroded by six minutes a month only. Surprising is their achievement for they calculated all this without any elementary system of hour glass or a water clock or a telescopic instrument.

The Mayan society was divided into classes. Beneath the ruler and his nobles were craftsmen and then peasants. The peasants were in large numbers and they did not disappear the conquistadors arrived. These people can still be found at places like Muna, where they live in thatched wattle and a daub huts and surprisingly still talk in the old Mayan language. Besides their language the Mayans contributed to he world by their superb architecture. Their buildings were very large. Some of them were so high as 230 ft. with a base of upto 130 by130 ft. The slopes are steep with a dizzying stairway.

The culture with such an advancement also succumbed to the law of nature, “every rise has a fall”. For many years their end baffled historians and archaeologist. They supposed the reason for decline being epidemics and famines. Some reasoned it due to internal wars. While some theorists lay the blame on the re currant attacks by he nomadic tribes.

Thus, going by the above reason, the internecine wars from 13th to 16th centuries must have broken down the entire civilization. Therefore, when the Spaniards came at Yucatan in the 16th century they were met by only the primitive descendants of the most advanced cultures.

In addition to it, Spaniards were least bothered about the Mayan culture. The Spanish bishop organized a series of solemn ceremonies at which the historical, religious and scientific writings of the Mayans were burnt. And all this was done in the name of inquisition. Prior to this inquisition ceremony, he had written a book, an “Account of the Affairs of Yucatan” in 1566. In this book he had written about the Mayan people and their lifestyle. But the book by no account can suffice the loss which we incurred by the mass burning of the Mayan literature. Perhaps, it would have revealed to us more about the mysterious culture: But alas!

These artistic images were created 37,000 years ago, rendering them slightly older than the Chauvet art works, artists in both cases almost certainly from what is known as the 28,000 year old Aurignacian culture.

Abri Castanet, in southern France, close by the Chauvet site, where the oldest known cave paintings were thought to exist, is the place where multiple images, both engraved and painted – featuring geometric figures, female sexual organs and animals have been found – and are now believed to be the earliest known wall art ever discovered.

National Academy of Sciences radiocarbon dating of the engravings show clearly that these artistic images were created 37,000 years ago, rendering them slightly older than the Chauvet art works, artists in both cases almost certainly from what is known as the 28,000 year old Aurignacian culture.

The Abri Castanet site has apparently been recognized for some time as one of the oldest Eurasian sites to feature evidence of human symbolism such as pierced animal teeth and shells, beads of both ivory and soapstone, as well as limestone slabs holding engravings and paintings.

These artworks have been traced to being the work of some of the first modern humans to have left Africa, the engravings – made on a 3,307-pound limestone block with ochre – and found in a rock shelter thought once occupied by Aurignacian reindeer hunters. Included among those engravings are images of the female vulva, along with other so-called zoomorphic and geometric images.

These images differ widely from the Chauvet examples – located deep underground, well away from living areas – Castanet art works all close to the objects used in everyday life. In some ways, these finds lead to more questions than answers, considering that the dominant motif appears represent female sexual organs, though other interpretations are possible, of course.

Other artwork found at the site clearly does represent female sexual organs, which is something shared with other European sites – The Venus of Hohle Fels being an ivory figurine found in a south-western Germany cave, depicting large projecting breasts and a pronounced vulva between the open legs – at least 35,000 to 40,000 years old.

There may well have been a shared cultural tradition at those times, in which an emphasis was placed on sexual attributes, though it remains unclear whether it was men or women who actually created the depictions, or even if they were used for ritualistic occasions. The significance of such graphic representation, and the role it played human society of the time, is a mystery still to be solved.

For something like seven centuries he had lain undisturbed.

He – or at least his remains – survived Henry VIII’s destruction of his abbey in 1537, eluded the grave-robbers that followed, and avoided discovery by Victorian archaeologists.

Even deep excavations and the underpinning of the crumbling building in the 1930s failed to unearth him.

But the abbot who headed Britain’s second richest and most powerful Cistercian monastery may soon be unmasked – along with the identity, perhaps, of one of the site’s ghosts.

Extraordinary discoveries: The abbot in his grave, left, and a ring and the head of a crozier found next to him

Historical: The 12th Century abbot’s grave was discovered undisturbed at Furness Abbey in Cumbria two years ago

Two years after his final resting place was uncovered beneath the ruins of Furness Abbey, his secrets – and the treasures he took to his grave – are being scrutinised by 21st century technology and expertise.

With the wonders of carbon dating and modern pathological and archaeological knowledge, specialists are confident they can fill a missing chapter in the history of the Lake District Abbey that inspired Wordsworth and Turner.

The skeleton of a portly figure was discovered almost by fluke when emergency repairs had to be made to the abbey at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

Cracks had appeared in the ‘mouldered walls’ that featured in Wordsworth’s ‘At Furness Abbey’ verse from his 1805 Prelude, and in some of JWM Turner’s etchings.

They were caused by medieval wooden foundations rotting away. Archaeologists and structural engineers called in to examine them dug down and found an undisturbed, unmarked and unknown grave.

Its significance was immediately apparent. Whoever was buried here had been placed in the presbytery – the most prestigious position in the abbey, usually reserved for those held in greatest esteem.

With the remains were rare medieval jewellery and a silver and gilt crozier, a senior abbot’s staff of office.

The discovery might also shed light, depending on your point of view, on whether the fat abbot might be one of several ghosts said to have been sighted in the ruins.

Experts at Oxford Archaeology North, which led excavations, believe the skeleton is that of a man aged 40 to 50.

Lucky: The discovery of the abbot’s grave at the Furness Abbey was almost a complete fluke

Close up: The gilded silver ring found in the grave and a silver and gilt crozier – a senior abbot’s staff of office

The curvature of the spine suggests he was obese and perhaps suffering from type-2 diabetes.

That is possibly confirmed by the position of his arms, which lie flanked around his girth rather than crossed over his chest.

Although he could have died as early as the 1150s, English Heritage curator Susan Harrison believes the grave more likely dates from the 1350s to early 1500s.

‘This is a very significant discovery,’ she said. ‘There has been no comparative grave found for the last 50 years in British archaeology.’

The head of the crozier, an ornamental staff carried by high-ranking members of the church, is gilded copper decorated with silver medallions that show the archangel Michael slaying a dragon.

The crook end is decorated with a serpent’s head. A small section of the wooden staff survives – as does part of the cloth the abbot held to prevent his hand tarnishing the crozier.

The ring he wore is gilded silver set with a gemstone of white rock crystal or white sapphire. It is possible that a hollow behind the stone contains a relic – perhaps what the monastery believed to be part of the body of a saint.

Both items are to go on public display at the abbey over the Bank Holiday weekend of May 4 to 7.

In its heyday, Furness Abbey was fabulously wealthy. But after the dissolution of monasteries in the 1530s it was stripped of virtually all its treasures and left to crumble.

English Heritage’s Susan Harrison said that, although the crozier and ring were rare, of more interest was the fact that such an important grave could be excavated and analysed using the most modern techniques to harvest as much information as possible.

Dating the grave could even produce a name for the abbot when matched against historical listings.
And the ghost? ‘I’d like to thoroughly quash all the ghost stories around this and concentrate on reality,’ Miss Harrison said.

A large number of possible early individual negotiations have been found by archaeologists using pc systems to search satellite tv pictures.

Jason Ur said he had found about 9,000 prospective new websites in north-eastern Syria.

Computers read the pictures for ground stains and piles triggered when mud-brick negotiations flattened.

Dr Ur said assessing the same place on the earth would have taken him a life-time.

Writing in the Process of the Nationwide Academia of Sciences, the specialist informed BBC News: “With these pc technological innovation methods, however, we can instantly come up with an tremendous map which is methodologically very exciting, but which also reveals the incredible amount of individual profession over the last 7,000 or 8,000 decades.

“What’s more, anyone who comes back to this place for any upcoming study would already know where to go.

“There’s no need to do this sort of preliminary reconnaissance to find websites. This allows you to do focused perform, so it maximises time we have on the earth.”

Iraqi history sites

In the last, Dr Ur used declassified spy satellite tv pictures and the eye to try to recognize prospective websites.

But over the last three decades, he has proved helpful with pc professional Bjoern Menze, from the Boston Institution of Technology, to make a program able to identify a large range of landscape.

He said this had eliminated subjectivity and permitted them to look at a much bigger place.

In all, about 9,000 possible negotiations were determined across 23,000 sq km.

Ideally, he said, some of these would be excavated, but the unstable governmental situation in Syria had pressured them to put any floor looks on hold.

However, he did tell the BBC that he expected to perform further research in the Kurdish areas of south Irak, and follow that up with excavations that would be “a very extensive examining of the model”.

Archaeological perform in Irak has not been popular in the last, but Dr Ur seems time is right to recognize history websites of significance and make sure they are not missing as the nation makers on with extensive progression of its places.

In what archaeologists believe must have been a Pompeii-like eruption of pyroclastic ash, a northern Chinese , 300-million-year-old tropical forest was preserved in stunning clarity. Located near Wuda, China, the site is truly unique, giving as it does a glorious snapshot of a moment in ancient time.

Volcanic ash apparently buried a large area of forest in only a few days, so that the plants were preserved, in many cases in the exact locations where they grew, and exactly as they were at that time.

Researchers there find branches with leaves attached, and even stumps from the same trees, as well some smaller trees with leaves, branches, trunk and cones intact, preserved in their entirety. Nearby coal-mining activities were responsible for unearthing large tracts of rock, so the size of study plots is unusually large.

The ecologists were able to examine 1,000 square metres of the ash layer at three separate locations in an area thought large enough to characterize local paleo-ecology meaningfully, the existence of the coal-beds a legacy of those peat-depositing, ancient tropical forests, the peat over time transforming into coal.

Able to date the ash layer to 298 million years or so ago, the researchers realized that was the beginning the Permian geologic period, during which Earth’s continental plates were still moving to form super-continent Pangea, the climate then comparable to that of today.

Those involved mapped the fossilized plants they encountered in all three sites, identifying six groups of trees. Lower canopy Tree ferns were overshadowed by much taller trees up to 80 feet tall. They found nearly complete specimens of Noeggerathiales trees, now extinct spore-bearing trees, relatives of ferns.

The three sites differed from one another in types of plant composition discovered, working with painter Ren Yugao to depict accurate reconstructions of all the amazing plant discoveries that the three sites revealed to them.

The first such Asian forest reconstruction, for any time interval, of a peat forest with Noeggerathiales as a dominant group, the site captures no more than an instant in the history of the planet, and by itself cannot explain how climate change affected life on Earth, but helps provide valuable context.

A recently discovered mysterious “winged” structure in England, which in the Roman period may have been used as a temple, presents a puzzle for archaeologists, who say the building has no known parallels.

Built around 1,800 years ago, the structure was discovered inNorfolk, in eastern England, just to the south of the ancient town ofVenta Icenorum. The structure has two wings radiating out from a rectangular room that in turn leads to a central room.

“Generally speaking, [during] the Roman Empire people built within a fixed repertoire of architectural forms,” said William Bowden, a professor at the University of Nottingham, who reported the find in the most recent edition of the Journal of Roman Archaeology. The investigation was carried out in conjunction with the Norfolk Archaeological and Historical Research Group.

The winged shape of the building appears to be unique in the Roman Empire, with no other example known. “It’s very unusual to find a building like this where you have no known parallels for it,” Bowden told LiveScience. “What they were trying to achieve by using this design is really very difficult to say.”

The building appears to have been part of a complex that includes a villa to the north and at least two other structures to the northeast and northwest. An aerial photograph suggests the existence of an oval or polygonal building with an apse located to the east.

The winged building

The foundation of the two wings and the rectangular room was made of a thin layer of rammed clay and chalk. “This suggests that the superstructure of much of the building was quite light, probably timber and clay-lump walls with a thatched roof,” writes Bowden. This raises the possibility that the building was not intended to be used long term. [Photos of Mysterious Stone Structures]

The central room, on the other hand, was made of stronger stuff, with its foundations crafted from lime mortar mixed with clay and small pieces of flint and brick. That section likely had a tiled roof. “Roman tiles are very large things, they’re very heavy,” Bowden said.

Sometime after the demise of this wing-shaped structure, another building, this one decorated, was built over it. Archaeologists found post holes from it with painted wall plaster inside.

Bowden said few artifacts were found at the site and none that could be linked to the winged structure with certainty. A plough had ripped through the site at some point, scattering debris. Also, metal detecting is a major problem in the Norfolk area, with people using metal detectors to locate and confiscate materials, something that may have happened at this site.

Still, even when the team found undisturbed layers, there was little in the way of artifacts. “This could suggest that it [the winged building] wasn’t used for a very particularly long time,” Bowden said.

The land of the Iceni

Researchers are not certain what the building was used for. While its elevated position made it visible from the town of Venta Icenorum, the foundations of the radiating wings are weak. “It’s possible that this was a temporary building constructed for a single event or ceremony, which might account for its insubstantial construction,’ writes Bowden in the journal article.

Adding another layer to this mystery is the ancient history of Norfolk, where the structure was found.

The local people in the area, who lived here before the Roman conquest, were known as the Iceni. It may have been their descendents who lived at the site and constructed the winged building.

Iceni architecture was quite simple and, as Bowden explained, not as elaborate as this. On the other hand, their religion was intertwined with nature, something which may help explain the wind-blown location of the site. “Iceni gods, pre-Roman gods, tend to be associated with the natural sites: the springs, trees, sacred groves, this kind of thing,” said Bowden.

The history between the Iceni and the Romans is a violent one. In A.D. 43, when the Romans, under Emperor Claudius, invaded Britain, they encountered fierce resistance from them. After a failed revolt in A.D. 47 they became a client kingdom of the empire, with Prasutagus as their leader. When he died, around A.D. 60, the Romans tried to finish the subjugation, in brutal fashion.

“First, his [Prasutagus'] wife Boudicea was scourged, and his daughters outraged. All the chief men of the Iceni, as if Rome had received the whole country as a gift, were stripped of their ancestral possessions, and the king’s relatives were made slaves,” wrote Tacitus, a Roman writer in The Annals. (From the book, “Complete Works of Tacitus,” 1942, edited for the Perseus Digital Library.)

This led Boudicea (more commonly spelled Boudicca) to form an army and lead a revolt against the Romans. At first she was successful, defeating Roman military units and even sacking Londinium. In the end the Romans rallied and defeated her at the Battle of Watling Street. With the Roman victory the rebellion came to an end, and a town named Venta Icenorumwas eventually set up on their land. [Top 12 Warrior Moms in History]

“The Iceni vanish from history effectively after the Boudicca revolt in [A.D.] 60-61,” said Bowden.

But while they vanished from written history, archaeological clues hint that their spirit remained very much alive. Bowden and David Mattingly, an archaeologist at the University of Leicester, both point out that the area has a low number of villas compared with elsewhere in Britain, suggesting the people continued to resist Roman culture long after Boudicca’s failed revolt.

This lack of villas, along with problems attracting people to Roman settlements in the area, “can be read as a transcript of resistant adaption and rejection of Roman norms,” writes Mattingly in his book “An Imperial Possession: Britain in the Roman Empire” (Penguin Books, 2007).

There is “still a fairly strong local identity,” said Bowden, who cautioned that while local people may have lived at the complex, the winged building is out of character for both Roman and Iceni architectural styles, a fact that leaves his team with a mystery.
