An critical analysis of issues in education among second generation immigrants in America by contrasting two biographical works: Maxine Hong Kingston's "Woman Warrior: Memories of a Girlhood Among Ghosts" and Richard Rodriguez's "Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez."

Maxine Kingston’s The Woman Warrior: A Memoir of a Girlhood Among Ghosts and Richard Rodriguez’s Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez both dealt with the issues experienced by second generation immigrant youth. They both shared with us their difficulties with assimilation and their balancing acts between two conflicting cultures. Though Chinese and Mexican cultures are far apart, geographically and culturally, Kingston and Rodriguez had many similar struggles. The two texts describe for us both of their experiences with education, religion, family, language as well as the assimilation of their families in general. Although they experienced many similar difficulties in assimilating to American culture, their individual experiences and stories are quite different. Rodriguez wrote mainly of the sacrifice of losing his family and Mexican culture while gaining an education, and Kingston wrote of blending her two cultures and the personal experiences she had through her life. Kingston and Rodriguez shared the experiences of growing up in an immigrant household, but Rodriguez writes from a much less emotionally personal perspective.
Rodriguez’s book, as his subtitle implies, shares with us his autobiography from a mainly academic standpoint. His focus was on the path to becoming what he called a “Scholarship boy.” He described this as an extremely type A personality, a high strung perfectionist. Like himself, the scholarship boy would initially strive for a balance between his incredibly separated school and home lives. Slowly though, as he showed us in “Aria” the equilibrium between the two eventually dissolves, and the scholarship boy eventually retreats into his schoolwork and lets go of his home life. Rodriguez says that becoming the scholarship boy was a conscious decision, that “education is not an inevitable or natural step in growing up” (51). As he increasingly embraced schoolwork he spent more and more time studying as academics continued to fill his life. As he expanded and grew individually, his family life was relatively static. His book was a tale not so much a balancing act between two opposing cultures; but of his academic life working against everything that he struggled with throughout his youth, especially his family life.
Unlike Rodriguez, Kingston touched on academics only as swiftly as she does on any other topic in her book. Education did play a role in the story of Kingston’s empowerment in her quest to become a “woman warrior,” but no more than any other aspect. Not only did her tale of becoming the woman warrior speak of many topics, but it also moved fluidly between fact, fiction, and occasionally into a wild exaggeration. The Woman Warrior did not take a linear course, but went through a set of stories, both fact and fantasy, leading to a much stronger Kingston than we had met at the outset. Rodriguez did not lead us to quite the same final conclusion of achievement as Kingston, but rather he provides us with a commentary on different experiences he had on his path to education.
The first experience Rodriguez regaled us with was his education in the English language. He grew up, like the majority of immigrants, speaking only the language of his heritage. This caused a great deal of trouble when he arrived at an American school and was expected to be proficient in English. Having only been exposed to his parents’ Spanish, learning English was not as simple to him as rote memorization, but also entailed adapting to something foreign and strange. It was as much a psychologically trying change as it was an academic one. His mother and father were accepting of his trouble and even sacrificed a large part of their life by speaking solely English in their home to aid Rodriguez in his education. His parents sacrificed much of their culture for their children at this point, and it was a moment of “dramatic Americanization” (22) for Rodriguez. This was the first chapter in his book, with the opening bringing him a step closer to becoming the Scholarship boy he was to become as well as losing a part of his family and culture to the pull of assimilation into a generalized American society.
Kingston also grows up speaking solely her family’s native language at home, but unlike Rodriguez she does not place a great deal of emphasis on her bilingual education. Kingston, like Rodriguez, went to an American school but seemed to have an easier time psychologically learning the language than Rodriguez did. She did encounter troubles speaking English in her American school, indeed, she flunked kindergarten by refusing to speak aloud. Her silence can be attributed not so much to a fear of the language, as was Rodriguez’s, but mainly because she didn’t realize she had to speak. Once she came to this realization, she started speaking in school and “felt bad each time that [she] did not speak.” (166) Her family continued to speak Chinese at home and most likely would never have considered making the same sacrifice of their Chinese language as Rodriguez’s parents did with Spanish in order to further their son’s education. This too managed to separate further Kingston’s American side and education from her family and heritage, just like Rodriguez. The disparity between going to school and being immersed in American culture and the English language and then going home to a completely different culture and language created a barrier for Kingston that was similar to Rodriguez’s.
Rodriguez’s parents were determined to give him every opportunity possible and came to the United States to provide their family with the tools to achieve their potential. They lived a middle-class lifestyle, in an average American neighborhood. His parents spoke English to further their children’s education and attempted to provide Rodriguez with a much more assimilated life than Kingston’s parents gave her. Kingston did not have the support to become as easily assimilated into American culture as Rodriguez was, even though she too grew up entirely in the United States. Her parents did not encourage adoption of American culture, but rather took many steps to preserve their Chinese way of life. She grew up in a working-class environment and went to a Chinese school after the required American public school. At home, her family spoke only Chinese and lived in a predominately Chinese immigrant neighborhood. She did not have an average American experience growing up as Rodriguez did; her life was much more akin to the experiences we would expect an immigrant family to have. Both families immigrated to the United States for the opportunities it could provide them, but Kingston’s family always talked of going back to China. Unlike Rodriguez’s parents, Kingston’s never planned for their family to become American and indeed strived to recreate as much of the Chinese culture as possible. Rodriguez grew up a middle class Mexican-American, whereas Kingston grew up as only Chinese, but living in the United States.
Kingston’s parents forced her to retain as much of their culture as possible, while Rodriguez’s parents simply supported him in whatever he needed to achieve a happy life, but both Rodriguez and Kingston experienced a sense of isolation, and a forced silence from not belonging entirely to either culture. Even though Rodriguez was speaking of education and Kingston of empowerment, both seemed to invoke a secondary theme of forced silence that ran through both books, bridging all other differences between their experiences. Both Hunger of Memory and The Woman Warrior are stories about the lives of children of immigrants struggling in a void between two cultures, which held them captive in their youth and shrouded them with a suffocating silence. This silence led to the voices that they share with us today through these books. Both Rodriguez and Kingston were trying to achieve some sort of empowerment through their writing, and trying to break out from being caught between two lives. Kingston strived to become the woman warrior, the person her mother empowered her to be with her Chinese legends. She told us of how she sometimes “hated the secrecy of the Chinese” (183). For Rodriguez, breaking the silence meant finally learning to share his life with others, sharing “things too personal to be shared with intimates”(201). This similarity ties the two books together in a powerful way.
The breaking of the silence that permeates both books is really the main connecting factor. Apart from the empowerment that breaking this silence and writing these books provided them with, they ultimately had very different things to tell us. Kingston’s story focuses on her life as a Chinese-American, blending fantasy with fact while touching on nearly all aspects of her youth. She told us of the spectrum of her experiences in integrating two opposing cultures. Hunger of Memory has a more solitary feel to it, telling us of how Rodriguez lost much of his culture on his path toward education. His book does talk of the blending of two cultures, as does Kingston’s, but it also tells of him leaving a culture behind and becoming American. Though both books are memoirs of children growing up within immigrant families, their stories are wildly different.

Remember their culture is quite different so use these tips to help you date an Asian girl.

Lets be sincere here, Asian girls are pretty and sexy creatures. I won’t be surprised if you have once held a secret desire to date Asian girls before of if you even still have such a desire. If you are not an Asian you probably know little about Asia and would find the girls even more alluring since their ways seem quite distinct from European girls or girls from other part of the world. This is not to say that they are a different specie altogether but their rich cultural heritage makes them quite distinct in their way of life or behavior. Globalization has brought about a more blending of cultures between different lands but still you just might need some tips on how to date an Asian girl successfully.

Are you among the many who have tried, really tried to date an Asian but can’t seem to get past the first date? Here are some tips that would help you, as you would see the problem has not been her but you and your style.

First tip is that you should not try to date an Asian girl. I mean don’t try the traditional dating moves. A dinner, movie, an occasional goodnight kiss and the no more calls from her. This is what everyone else is doing and it comes with too much pressure, expectations and awkwardness. These is what every one else has been doing with her. Try something easier, cheaper and less conventional. Something like just meeting for coffee, no big set up or preparations. She is less prepared and expectant. The atmosphere is less charged, more relaxed and thus more fun without the usual dating expectations.

Every guy tries that gets a woman or an Asian out on a date tries to impress her with is detailed “rap” or speech moves. The truth is she has heard it all before in many variations and versions. In this case less is more. The less you try to impress her the more the Asian girl is impressed. Try listening to her and getting her talk about herself. All you need is a small degree of interest. This throws her off guard as you are different and challenging, and Asian girls like you challenging.

Do not be Mr. Goody-goody. Be a bit naughty throw in unexpected and mischievous remarks to leave her wondering if you just said that. Do not over do it but do not show her you are over impressed with her looks. Naughty statements and actions leave them wondering more about the kind of guy you are.

Asian girls get a lot of admirers and so you have to be different to leave an impression. Most of them would want to give you little test to see how firm you are. Do not just give in to every one of her whim. Sometimes you can playfully yet firmly resist or refuse her. This is quite a turn on for Asian girls, a guy who takes charge (please don’t over do it)

Believe it or not an Asian girl would rate you more if she discovers you are admired by other Asian girls. So don’t spend all your time with one. Widen out and let them know you are trying to decide and have a lot of admirers. You just would be surprised with he results.

Asians are family bound, if you meet an Asian lady you would likely notice that family bounds are more respected within them. So get to know more about her family. Be interested in her family it sure would boost the possibility of your success.

Honesty is also a quality that is highly respected in the Asian society. A man of honor does not lie and does not abandon his responsibility. If you wish to impress an Asian girl you have to prove to her that you can be such a man of honor.

I believe you are better armed to tackle the next Asian girl that comes along. These tips if properly followed would leave you smiling each time.
