Oregon passed a referendum (Oregon Death with Dignity Act), which says that the doctor can prescribe lethal medication to hasten death of terminally ill. The law has survived numerous legal challenges and become state law in October 1997.

To determine how psychologists think about this role and to study the practical problems in making such judgments, researchers examined 625 licensed psychologists in the state.
