On the afternoon of December five 1945, five US Navy Avenger torpedo bombers left Fort Lauderdale on a routine training mission out into the Atlantic Ocean. They were due to only be out for three hours. The planned route was to fly east for 120 miles before turning north for a further 73. Then the final leg of 120 miles would bring them back to their base. They never returned.
