I have lived in both Germany and America. They are both great places and I enjoy them very much! The cultures in both places are very interesting!

I am German. I am one hundred percent German. I say this with a European definition. Usually in the US you say,” I’m Irish.” This means that 200 years ago your great, great, great grandfather was Irish. I mean that I was born in Germany and I lived there until I was 7. Now I live in the US and I have lived here for quite some time. Many people ask me if I like Germany or the US better. This is a tough decision and I always say that both are great. In the US, I have all of my friends now and I am accustomed to everything. On the other hand, in Germany are all of my relatives. All of them! I don’t have a single family member besides my mom, dad, and sister that live within the next 3500 miles. Of course I talk to my relatives on the phone and I Skype them but it isn’t the same.

The biggest difference between the US and Germany is the culture. Where should I begin? It is a different world when I go back to Germany every 2 years. My aunt and uncle own a bakery in a small town. The people there are also very different. Most of them are nice like here, but of course some are not so nice. In the US there are cars everywhere. Of course, they are needed most of the time due to the far distances between places. In Germany, you see so many people on the streets! Bikers and walkers mingle in one. It is an amazing sight. Along these streets you will often find small shops of baked goods and other food stores. Just because of these, you feel more alive compared to the typical US suburbia. Also, in Germany I feel like there is always something to do. My cousins and I are always out and about. The whole entire day we parade around town and enjoy ourselves. Of course, when I come it is summer and we all have time.

Being bilingual is both a blessing and a burden. I love being able to discuss some things with my family that is private in front of others. I don’t mean talking behind their back, just personal things. On the other hand it is a burden because people constantly ask me,” How do you say ________ in German? Say something in German”. Blah blah blah. They never stop! Now don’t get me wrong I love talking to people and everything, it just gets annoying sometimes.

Although I have lived in both countries, there are new things I learn about them every time! I love both cultures and I may even move back to Germany some day. Not any time soon, but maybe after college or so. I haven’t planned that far ahead!

A tasty tale of two rival firms who face each other on St Valentines day!

The St Valentines day Massacre!

This day had been coming for sometime! The town just wasn’t big enough for the two firms, one of them had to go! The protagonists approached the dimly lit warehouse,

“You got the stuff? the ammunition Reg?”

“Sure boss just like you said and the boys are on there way”

Reg opened the warehouse door and sneaked a look inside. It was dark save for a few dirty light bulbs hanging from cables from the ceiling. Reg crouched down and dragged his weaponry behind him in a huge sack and disappeared behind an abandoned van.

On the opposite side of the enormous warehouse a similar conversation took place,

“Bill you go in first check it out I don’t want to get caught in the open with no cover, I think this meet will get messy real quickly I have a bad feeling about this!”

Bill break rolled through the door and ran behind several stacked filing cabinets, he waved in his boss.

Cars and vans began arriving quietly with no headlights on. Tough looking guys in black and white overalls filed in and found what little cover their was and waited!

“Right Fondant I called this meet so you come out in the open and not tooled up lets talk”

Silence then,

“Ok Mr Sugar walk slowly to the middle and no sudden moves! You tell your boys no funny stuff!”

Two rotund heavily built men broke cover and very slowly walked to the centre of the warehouse with their arms held away from their sides and in plane view of the attending crews!

“Right Mr Sugar what do you want? You’ve got my attention?”

“You know what I want Mr Fondant if were using business names? You selling on my plots you bastard I’ve warned you before south of the railway line is mine always has been got it!”

Mr Sugar pulled out a wrapper and written on the wrapper was ‘Mr Fondant’s delicious cream whipped ice bun’ He held the wrapper inches from Mr Fondant’s nose and said,

“What’s this then scotch mist? Your poaching on my customers!”

Mr Fondant grinned and said,

“That proves nothing it could have been brought from one of my shops”

Mr Sugar turned over the wrapper and read out,

“120 Laughton towers delivery 14.02.2011! You think I’m thick or something!”

Mr Fondant made a quick slicing movement with his hand and 4 women all dressed identically broke cover and spread out! Then all hell broke loose! A corned Beef and Pickle sandwich spiralled in the air and caught Mr Sugar on the temple it was Brown bread too! Mr Sugar buckled at the knees on seeing that Mt Sugar’s light infantry opened up!

A volley of cheese and tomato baguettes flew from the opposing delivery girls! Plastic wrapping split! One baker took a piece of cheddar cheese straight in his left eye! He fell to the ground screaming as the extra mature cheddar stung his pupils!

Mr Fondant retaliated,

“Bring out the big boys now!”

Three fat chefs ran forward from behind the filing cabinets and let fly with Scotch Eggs! Bang, Bang Mr Sugar hit the deck as the Scotch eggs hammered into his groin! On seeing this Reg flipped, no one hurt his boss of 20 years! Reg broke cover screaming and he ran with stale pork pies in his hands! Wham, wham! Mr Fondant had a taste of his own cooking! Hard baked stale pork pies caught him straight in the throat! Winded he fell to the floor.

Veal and egg pies came from behind the van like incendiary bombs, splat, splat, a delivery girl hit the concrete floor and cuddled her bruised breast! A voice ran out,

“Leave the women out of this!”

A louder reply came instantly,

“This total Bakery war! You brought them into the firing line so live with it! Fondant”

A fat chef walked slowly into the affray behind him two small apprentice bakers hid in his wake. They broke cover and began throwing Jam and cream Meringue’s this was getting messy!

Mr Fondant groaned as he rocked side to side with groin pain as he did a Strawberry surprise hit him square in the face! The liquidised sugar temporarily blinded him!

The Mr Sugar Bakery was in the ascendancy the 13 full time bakers and delivery workers marched forward and threw round after round of Ham and pickle sandwiches. Every now and again a warm Family size Cheese and pickle pie slammed into a Mr Fondant employee this was the big stuff! a four pound in weight cheese and pickle pie was no laughing matter! A baker took one clean in the face! He fell to the floor screaming and grabbed at the delicious savoury pie trying to clear his nose and eyes!

In the distance police sirens could be heard someone had blown the whistle! Mr Sugar shouted,

“Run scatter the old bill are on their way!”

Employees ran for the exits limping and cursing under the pain of exploding comestibles! Police riot vans screeched to a stop and special constables in full riot gear burst out of the vans and formed a ring around the exits! The party was over!

A loud hailer sounded,

“Mr Sugar we know its you, put that Veal and Egg savoury Slice on the ground and take two steps back!”

Two riot policemen levelled their MP5 Automatic pistols at Mr Sugar,

“Sugar we mean it drop that high in fat content slice right now!”

The rival bakers were taken away to the sound of screaming sirens. The police dogs were let loose to help clean up the mess!

The End

Lord Banks

All around the world, many smaller local businesses fall victim to supermarkets every day. This is the sad truth. Bakeries are often amongst these small businesses.

Once they are gone, their distinctive aromas and unique cake and cookie recipes are usually lost forever. Please keep this in mind when you go shopping the next time and instead of buying products of supermarket’s bakery, visit the independent one near your home. Of course, there are many more reasons to support your local bakery than friendly and pleasant atmosphere.

Employees of your local bakery will lose their work if you do not support them by buying their products. Maybe you have a friend working in a bakery. Would you want him/her to become jobless? Also, the work there is pretty hard. They often work during the night or start early in the morning. If you were in their place, how would you feel if people did not even care to try the tasty bread you made? And the only reason for that being the fact that nearest supermarket sells similar (but less tasty) bread for a few cents cheaper than bakery you work for. Keep this in mind and show them your respect by at least trying products they make.

Sometimes, the bakery products sold in supermarkets are even more expensive than ones in local bakeries. Yet, people keep on buying them just because they are too lazy to make another trip to buy a similar product elsewhere (usually tastier and sometimes even cheaper). Local bakeries then suffer from low sales.

You should keep in mind that these bakeries often represent many decades of family tradition. It may be the tradition of families whose members have worked there for many years or the tradition of owning family. Often, owners of traditional local bakeries work alongside their employees. I guess that you don’t want to be the cause of the end of such a tradition.

Unique recipes for bakery products come together with tradition. Most local bakeries offer much tastier and often greater variety of bakery products than supermarkets. Instead of buying donuts or similar over-sweetened product in supermarket, try some cakes, cookies, rolls and buns from your local bakery (if there still is any near the place where you live). You will probably be surprised by the variety of interesting flavors as the opposite to uniform flavor of most of the supermarket’s bakery products.

So, as you can see, there are many reasons for buying bakery products in your local bakery. Please reconsider your shopping habits. By ignoring the local bakeries, you are responsible for end of long-surviving traditions and unique recipes. You are also responsible for former employees of your local bakery being jobless. Because all of this, I urge you to support your local bakery.

Has the human race peaked? Are we going down a slippery slope? You be the judge.

A church close to Penn Station in NY City traditionally left candles out for visitors to light. The practice was stopped since the number of people who actually left a donation for the candles dropped from 92% in 1998 to 28% in 2003. Pray for those people…

Be careful visiting the bakery department in your local grocery store. Over 60% of the shoppers handle the baked goods with their hands rather than using the tongs. It’s bad enough donuts are fattening, now they may be dirty too?

A sleepy suburban community had been enduring a 3 year crime spree in their neighborhood. If anything was left outside, chances are it would be stolen. The list of items (junk) that turned up missing appeared to be endless. Garden hoses, for sale signs, lawn decorations, garden gnomes ( that may be considered a community service) garbage cans, recycling boxes and various crap. Who in their right mind would steal this stuff for 3 years? Even the local pawn shops and flea markets were checked to see if the missing junk showed up. Finally a break in the case. A 64 year old man and his 32 year old son were the criminals. 3 years of stolen junk was stored in their garage. No one could figure out the motive, since the man was worth $14 million dollars. To quote Yogi Berra, “Who’d a thunk it”?

A group of British researchers have predicted that by the year 3000, the human race will have split into 2 distinct different species. The superior group of attractive, intelligent ruling class and the sub-species of the “less than smart”, ugly people. Those researchers must have just returned from Hollywood. Hey, Guys, it won’t take until the year 3000!

Do we really hold our elected officials to a higher standard? Should our children aspire to hold public office? Let’s take a look at their role models:

29 have been accused of spousal abuse.

7 has been arrested for fraud.

19 have been accused of writing bad checks.

117 directly or indirectly bankrupted at least two businesses.

3 have done time for assault.

71 cannot get credit card due to bad credit.

14 have been arrested on drug related charges.

8 have been arrested for shop lifting.

21 are currently defendants in lawsuits.

84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last few years.

Now this is a congress you can be proud of!!

In an average year, the Goodyear Blimp is shot at approximately 80 times.

A police officer in Ohio apparently very hungry, was waiting for the meal he ordered in a local Denny’s. Tired of waiting, he ran into the kitchen, put a gun to the cook’s head and told her that he would kill her if she didn’t hurry up with his food. I personally can’t imagine any Denny’s meal that good.

The bible is the most shoplifted book in the USA.

If you ever consider insurance fraud, stop and consider this. A clothing store owner asked his friend to shoot him in the arm, as a part of the phony robbery in the store. He should have had a friend with better aim. He was shot in the chest. He survived, only to have his girlfriend give him up to police.

Police in Wisconsin arrived at the house of a mother for dunking her 11 year olds head in the toilet. Upon questioning, the mother told the police to go ahead and take the kids, she hadn’t had a vacation in 13 years! Did she think that she would serve her time at Six Flags??

A man charged with murder escaped from police custody. The Chief issued the following statement. “He is no more dangerous than any other murderer”.

Think of all possibilities before stealing something. A man stole a car from a repair shop. It was getting a new paint job and the employee had left the keys in it. Unfortunate the thief didn’t know that the car was also suppose to get new brakes. He flew down the street, through 2 stop lights and crashed into another car. No brakes. Oh well…

As is surviving in the after math of Katrina was not bad enough, a man who used an abandoned boat to rescue 200 stranded people is being sued. Yes, sued. The owner of the boat says that his insurance will only cover about ½ the cost of the boat and that the Good Samaritan should step up to the plate and pay the rest. Did I mention something about humanity declining?

Stupid perverts. A woman discovered that her husband was drugging her and then defiling her when she found the pictures and files on their home computer. Yikes!

A insurance company employee was sitting in his cubicle, playing with the gun he brought to work and accidentally shot himself in both legs. I doubt if his insurance policy would cover that…

As for the male principal of a catholic high school that was caught on the stroll late one night in his fish net stockings, wig and otherwise streetwalker clothes, a fellow priest said “After all, it is the Halloween season”.
