A rant on homophobia.

Right, this article is going to be much more of a rant, I can tell you that for a fact! This is something that really pisses me off. When somebody treats another person differently because of thier sexual orientation. WHY?!?!?!

I say this now. I am straight. Hetrosexual to the bone. But I know a number of “Gay” people. One of my best friends is a lesbian and I love her to bits and she is in a happy relationship with her girlfriend of a year. But there’s been times when I’ve been out with them, they’ve been holding hands and complete strangers will glare at them! Seriously if looks could kill! But I am happy to say that they don’t notice, and if they do they rise above it.

But not everyone has the same self awareness as they do. For some people it is horrifically hard for them to admit to who they are and the fact they like the same sex. So for those people, having such looks would kill them inside. I know when I get looks of the same kind for whatever reason I instantly become really self conscious!

I really have to say that “Gay” people are amazing. The fact they can stand up and say this is who I like, even if it means they get a lot of shit for it amazes me.

For the people who do all the name-calling, death glares and hate speech/violence. Go die. You have no right to judge other people based on sexuality. They are still human. They still feel. They still think for themselves. Other than their sexual preference, what makes them so different from you and I? NOTHING WHAT SO EVER!! So swallow the nasty comments you have lined up and ready to fire at them and leave them be.

You may have noticed I put the word Gay in inverted commas, this is because I really do hate labelling people as touched upon in another one of my articles, but we still do it. I believe that future generations will not have to suffer any form of prejudice and two men can love each other in the same way as a man and woman can without being bullied for it.

Sex.

The complexity of human sexual behavior defies simple categorization. Sexual orientation manifests as fantasies, desires, actual behaviour, and self-or-other-identified labels. For example, a man could think of himself and describe himself as heterosexual, engage in sex with men and women in equal numbers, and in his sexual fantasies focus almost exclusively on male images; a simple label fails to capture the reality of his sexuality. Even when considering only sexual behaviors, differences may exist between actual versus desired, past versus present, admitted versus practiced, and consensual versus forced.

In the medical setting, asked about a patients label (e.g:, “Are you gay or bisexual?”) importantly assesses her or his self perception, but may fail to identify medically significant information. Many individuals who engage in same-gender high risk for sexual behaviours do not self-identify as gay or bisexual. Men who have sex with men (MAM) may at be increased risk for sexually transmitted diseases (Studs) compared with men who have sex with women only. Women who have sex with men and women (ESME) may have an increased risk for STD and substance abuse compared with either women who have sex with women (WSW) or women who have sex with men only. Differentiation would be possible by asking a patient only if she identifies here self as lesbian, as both MSW and WSW may identify themselves as lesbian.

Little specific literature exists describing the characteristics of bisexual men and women separate from either strictly heterosexual or homosexual persons. Research studies that include bisexual-identified individuals typically group them with homosexual patients during statistical analysis, limiting information about bisexuality as distinct from heterosexuality or homosexuality.

What's wrong with being gay?

Many of us grew up to hear our parents tell us that being straight was the only way to be. We were told that being gay was wrong or “just not right”. Parents would tell their children to stay away from “gay people” as if they had a disease or illness that could be caught. We know better now, don’t we? I am not so sure that we all do!

It’s hard to believe that there are still people out there who are homophobic or think that if a person is gay they must be sick. And yet, I still hear the age old “It’s Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve”. Well, what’s so bad about Adam and Steve or Emma and Eve? Why should someone who is gay have to hide who they are? Pretending to be straight will not change anything nor will “coming out of the closet” and telling people they are gay. So why can’t people just be themselves?

Sadly there are still people out there who are gay or bisexual and are afraid to tell people because they don’t know how the person will react. To some, it is easier to hide it than to come out of the closet and tell people how they feel. I recently read a post on Facebook from a friend that I haven’t known too long. She stated “For those of you who didn’t know, I’m gay” and went on to say how her professor in school had made an odd comment to her when he “figured it out”. She couldn’t believe his “way back when thinking” and commented “this is 2012 people”. My response to her? ”Gay, straight or bi, black or white, Chinese or Hispanic, we all bleed red, we all have a heart and we are all human”!

No one who is gay or bisexual should feel like they have to hide who they are. Being gay is not a disease and it’s not something that you can catch. A gay person is not going to try to convince you to be gay too, it doesn’t work that way. My friend was right, it is 2012 and we all know better. We should all be teaching our children that whether they are gay or straight we will still love them just the same!

The experience of a conservative Bible college student when visiting a PFLAG meeting.

No class in college has been so thoroughly awkward, so completely uncomfortable, so passionately disconcerting… as Human Sexuality. I mean, it can be a fascinating topic at times. Still, I can’t help but squirm as I not only see, but label certain parts of the body, focusing on their very form and existence. I can’t help but cringe as I watch cameras go places that nothing ever should. I need not say more.
When, in the course of Human Sexuality events… I had to visit a community resource related to sexuality in order to evaluate it for a group project. I joined up with some other students to go to PFLAG, which stands for Parents, Friends and Family of Lesbians and Gays.

It seems like it was only last night… Oh wait. I think it was. Last night, I went with three other students to observe what the organization was about. Of course, I could tell that those with me were a bit nervous, as was I, entering into an unknown world that not only could be awkward, but could lead to ill feelings should our ‘university of origin’ be discovered (which it may very well could be). I was unsure if my confidence or uncomfortable expectations would prevail.

When we arrived, we were greeted with friendly smiles and introductions. I hadn’t been sure before if we’d face scrutinization as new people or be put on the spot. Instead, we were able to shake some hands and sit through the presentation.
It involved three homosexual parents and their experiences with raising kids. They talked about many subjects, amongst them how they wanted to make sure their children had a totally free choice of homosexuality or heterosexuality. They also talked about how they do try and make sure that men and women have input into the lives of their children, regardless of having two moms or two dads.
Though I was a little taken aback when people who I thought were women spoke and ended up being men (for some, there was no doubt beforehand), I still saw people who was as friendly as any heterosexual I might meet in a community group.
The meeting itself was hosted at a church, and many members attended there. One of the people during the meeting shared an article on how a group of homosexuals had professed their faith and love of God in ministry to a group they were in.
Through all this, though I still see homosexuality as something unhealthy, I began to see it in a more Christ-like light. Instead of viewing them as something like lepers, I saw them as people who had let something unhealthy occur, but were like a person who was having pre-marital sex. I’d still be their friend, wouldn’t be uncomfortable around them, and still would spend time with them (even though I disagreed with their decisions).

In interviewing a board member present, she found out we went to Multnomah, and asked (qualifying it with “if we were comfortable”) what Multnomah’s view on the topic of homosexuality was. We gave her a simple summary of believing that it was unhealthy, but we were not judgemental, and she said that that was neat and asked us just asked us not to say cliche things like “love the sinner hate the sin” because those could be really hurtful and non-productive. She was an experienced but retired counselor at a nearby high school.

All in all, it was a really interesting night, and I learned so much from it. I feel like I could be more comfortable around people accepting a homosexual life-style, and be able to also minister to them and be honest. I realized as I was there that anyone there leaving homosexuality to try and become heterosexual would be nothing compared to anyone their becoming saved by Christ. We’ve got to be open-minded and keep our priorities straight, even while acknowledging truth and speaking it in love.

When Barrack Obama came into office as the first Black American to be President of United State of America, it was thing of honour and pride for that Black race world over and not only Africans. Then we could hold our heads high that indeed the Black race has for once been recognized in a society dominated by racism before now. We in the African continent were proud that someone of African origin has come to be in the White house which is acclaimed to be the headquarters of the world.

With his coming into office, we looked up to him to defend the integrity, pride, values and honour of the Black race. The Black race world over and indeed Africans are known for maintaining integrity. They are known to cherish ideals and values that uphold dignity of man. They are conservatives of the cultural ideals and value inherited that is why extended family life still thrives in the continent. They believe and uphold sanctity of marriage as ordained by God. They strongly believe that marriage is between opposite sex and not the propagation of this age which to me is the idea from the pit of hell.

Recently, the Nigerian Senate criminalized gay marriage and imposed jail terms on those that not only practice it but also those who support and witness it. The passage of the law attracted condemnation from many quarters including Britain and the United States of America. Many of the advanced countries threatened Nigerian that they will withdraw their aid and support for Nigeria. This is arrant nonsense and neo-colonialism. Reacting to the threat of some of these advanced countries, the president of Nigerian Senate, David Mark, said that the criminalization of gay in Nigeria is irrevocable.

A report by Austin Ogannah in www.thewillnigeria.com on Gay/Lesbian ban: Obama dares Nigerian Senate, Issues Presidential Memo, noted that, “Nigerian is a conservative nation with very strong traditional values though THEWILL believes it has a sizeable number of lesbians and gay who would rather remain in the closet than openly declare that they are gay. Senate President, Senator David Mark who Thursday defended the bill passed with overwhelming majority in the Senate told the visiting German Ambassador to Nigeria, Dorothee Janetzke – Wenzel that the ban on same sex remains ‘irrevocable.’ Senator Mark maintained that the ban would remain in spite of threats by foreign nation to withdraw assistance to Nigeria. It is unfair to tie whatever assistance or aid to Nigeria to the laws we make in the overall interest of our citizens otherwise we are tempted to believe that such assistance comes with ulterior motives. If the assistant is aimed at mortgaging our future, values, custom and ways of life, then they should as well keep their assistance.”

The memo issued from the office of President Obama titled “FACT SHEET: Working to advance Human Rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Persons Globally, sees the discrimination against Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender persons as a global challenge. If this becomes a global challenge, I wonder why we have different nations and why each nation has its own law. It should have been one law for all the nations of the world. Nations exists which are people of the same values, idea, orientations, customs, etc. If we as a nation cannot maintain our values, beliefs and customs because of what others believe and because of crumbs they give as assistance, then it means we have lost our identity as a people.

President Obama who knows the conservative nature of Africans and now is intimidating Nigeria and other Nations that are anti lesbians and gay is very unfortunate. All our hope in a leader that will defend the dignity and integrity of the black race has been dashed. Obama we are disappointed that you could not understand your people. If you have acted on pressure from men and women who have lost their conscience, just because you want to be re-elected, then know that the tears of people you want to abuse will certainly hunt you. Know also that you may not get that re-election. I can’t imagine myself coming to America to behave against the laws of the land. Human Rights should be within the context of people’s beliefs, customs, values and ideals. In some countries, carrying gun is not prohibited. But that does not mean that such will go to another where they do not carry gone and carry his gun up and down.

Protection of the rights of LGBT Persons Globally should be within the context of the laws guiding the nations where they are. If I love to kill, I feel it is not a right because it is against the norms and laws of the land. That there are people who are gays or lesbians does not mean that every other person must accept them. In a situation where majority of the people say no to it, for sake of sovereignty and peace, it should be like that. OBAMA LET NIGERIANS BE. DO NOT INTIMIDATE US. WE HAVE VALUES, CUSTOMS ANS TRADITIONS WE VALUE. WE HAVE SHAME AND CONSCIENCE. YOU PEOPLE CAN PRACTICE YOUR GAY IN USA AND LET US BE. We may be poor but we are not insane. We may be poor but we have conscience. Long live Nigerian Senate! Long live Nigerian National Assembly! Long Live Nigerian nation! Long live Nations that hate sin! Long live Nations that call sin sin and do not paint it names! Long live all people who stand for truth! Long live all who have not lost their conscience!

Because Russia is a Large and Powerful nation, the international community has stayed silent. If thousands of use raise out voices, they will be force to speak out and stop this atrocious law!

cPolitical leaders in St. Petersburg are about to vote on law that will make it illegal for any person to write a book, publish an article or speak in public about being gay, lesbian or trans-gender. The ruling party led by President Medvedev and Prime Minister Putin could make millions of people invisible with the stroke of a pen.
Human rights defenders around the country are doing everything they can to stop it. They are risking their freedom to organize flashmobs and protests, but they are afraid that it won’t be enough.
Right now, the world needs to speak up and tell Russian authorities to drop the bill. Join this call to leaders around the world to reach out to their counterparts in the Russian government – and ask them to reject this discriminatory and anti-democratic law.

TO WORLD LEADERS:
The party led by Russian President Medvedev and Prime Minister Putin is pushing discriminatory legislation against lesbian, bi, gay and trans people that could eliminate their freedom to speak publicly and assemble.
Russia is a signatory to numerous international human rights treaties – including the European Convention on Human Rights. We call on you to urgently speak out and hold Russia accountable to its treaty obligations – and stand with LGBT Russians whose ability to speak for themselves is under attack.

Why should this be a problem for anyone?

Why is this issue always thrown out there for the public to focus on?

It is my belief that this issue has been put out there to distract the public from the real issues at hand. Those issues being the abuse of power by our governments officials and the corporations that have been “legally” bribing them. We have lived in a state of fear and government abuse for so long that the majority of people have not even questioned it. Some of us, however, have begun to question the system. We have been asking the questions that have been going unanswered. We have taken it upon ourselves to look for the answers. Why should gay marriage mean anything to any of us? Why should it matter who sleeps with who as long as they are willing and able to give consent? This issue has plagued me for too long now. I have been voicing my opinion in regards to this and I have yet to hear anyone that can give me a logical reason for the prejudice that is being propagated. Is there anyone out there that can give me even close to a good reason?

We don't hear as much about AIDs as we did a few years ago, but that doesn't mean it isn't just as real and dangerous as it was in the 70s. Lack of awareness is a major cause. Education is a preventive and we have forgotten to educate our young about AIDs. A large majority of new AIDs patients are only 13 years old. If parents don't educate children that young, who will?

The largest segment of new HIV positives in the United States are 13 to 29 year old males. Gay and bisexual males of all races are most effected. In 2009 white males were the ones most newly infected with 11,400 new cases. black males followed with 10,800 new AIDs cases. 49 percent were gay males. More education is badly needed in the gay and bisexual community.

Young gay males didn’t live through the early AIDs epidemic and haven’t had the education that was available in the 1970s and 1980s. A large number of new AIDs cases are due to poverty and little education. Many young men do not understand until they are diagnosed.

Jude Marby said he didn’t understand until he was diagnosed. It was the first he had heard of HIV/AIDs. He can’t understand why he wasn’t warned about such a dangerous disease, Now he is spreading the word to everyone he can. Marby isn’t surprised that young gay men account for the larggest number of infections. He says most of it is because of lack of awareness. He encourages everyone to be tested who is sexualy active.

Schools should take up education about AIDs in middle school. It’s shocking that youngsters are being diagnosed with AIDs so young. We have forgotten that AIDs is real and kids as well as older people are coming into contact with it every day. How often do we hear it spoken of.

I can’t recall when I last saw a warning or a program about AIDs. We are becoming complacent and it is effecting our kids and our community. We have a big problem getting the word out to our young people. Everyone should understand about AIDs and how to protect themselves before becoming sexually active.

With the military's don't ask don't tell policy going out the window how will servicemen and women react to this new policy. Now that men and women can openly serve as gay, bysexual, and lesbian will this slow down the mission.

Many military members have been told its time to come out the closet but some members may still take a while to totally come out. Many may be waiting to see what happens and time will tell what reactions people will get when everyone openly comes out of the closet. So far military members this policy hasn’t had any effect to morale and order and things have been business as usual for military members. Member reactions may be quiet as of now but what will happen when members deploy. In deployed locations some of the services currently do not allow men and women to visit each others quarters; however since homosexual members will still get to room together will put the opposite sex policy in question? Many dormitories and shower trailers in deployed locations are open bay showers, how will members react to being stared at in the showers? Only time will tell what problem areas will have to be worked out as situations arise. Members now will have to get use to seeing gay and lesbian couples kiss and hug each other during ceremonies and special events. Will children be banned from coming to events where gay couples may be kissing each other on stage during military ceremonies? As time goes bye sleeping quarters for dorm residents may be rearranged. Since member currently have same sex roommates will this create an atmosphere of favoritism and unfairness for members that are not homosexual. What if the military decides to make things fair by rooming all the gay and lesbian members in one dormitory. What if the homosexual dorm consisted of a gay and lesbian roommate to keep things in order and fair. What if the next day there was hundreds of people lining up to claim their new found homosexual overnight transformation. Many may claim this will be a smooth transition but the obvious problems will not be far behind and outside the box thinking may end us up with the creation of a homosexual dorm and a empty straight dorm.

When did having gay friends become a fad?

Something I have noticed a lot of lately is straight people, especially straight females, who go out of their way to surround themselves with gay (usually male) friends. While it is great that people are becoming more open and accepting of other’s differences, a lot of these friendships seem more based on following a trend than on actually wanting friendship. It’s trendy to say things like “it’s okay, I have a lot of gay friends!”

With shows like Will and Grace and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, a lot of straight girls seem to find having a gay male friend to be “fashionable.” They just want a guy to go shopping with.

Gay culture is also becoming trendy and fashionable, and they want to be part of it even though they are not gay themselves. By having a gay friend, straight people can feel like they are being supportive of the cause and part of some great social movement.

Straight men are not exempt from this phenomenon either. Straight guys seem to gravitate toward lesbians and bisexual women. This, however, is for a completely different reason than that of their female counterparts. These straight men are arrogant enough to think that if they spend enough time with a lesbian, they can “convert” her, or that she is only gay because she hasn’t met the right man yet (which, of course, will be them).

Straight men also assume that all bisexual women are sex-starved sluts who can’t wait to get with any straight man and a couple of their female friends at the same time. This is usually only a fantasy, because most bi girls.

Women need to stop looking at gay men as fashion accessories and straight men need to stop seeing lesbians and bi women as sexual objects. People are people, no matter what their sexual preference, and they deserve to be treated as human beings.
