Idioms are expressions whose meaning is different from the suggested words which compose them.

Idioms are expressions whose meaning is different from the suggested words which compose them. They are used in our oral or written communication. Following are selected idioms for the Halloween season. Their meanings may not relate to the Halloween, but most of the accompanying nouns or adjectives are figures that are associated with this particular season.

Bat

As blind as a bat- it is said that bat has poor sight, and it cannot see during the daylight. It is also said to a person with poor eyesight. “Ever since his surgery he has become as blind as a bat. He can hardly read a letter.”

Dead

Come to a dead end- to come to an absolute stopping point. “He drove his car to a road that led to a dead end.”

In a dead heat- a race where two or more contestants reach the finish line exactly at the same time. “The two runners finish the race in a dead heat.”

In the dead of the night- means in the middle of the night. “Burglars usually strike in the dead of the night.”

Devil

Between the devil and the deep blue sea- one is in a dilemma. “He can’t make decision whether to accept the job offer or not. He is caught between the devil and the deep blue sea.”

Give the devil his due- however bad a person is he should be given credit for any good quality or achievement that he may have. “The sergeant major is very harsh when it comes to discipline, but to give the devil his due; he always attends to his soldiers’ need.”

Speak of the devil- to speak about a person when suddenly he appears. “Tom always keeps us waiting. He doesn’t seem to honor his commitment. Shall we go? …speaking of the devil, here he comes. “

There will be devil to pay- there will be lots of troubles. “If you go against the wishes of your boss there will be devil to pay.”

Ghost

A ghost employee- a fictitious name in the roster of employees or a person listed as a member of an entity when he is not. “Dishonest finance personnel padded the payroll with ghost employees.”

A ghost town- is a place that is abandoned by its populace. “My-Lai became a ghost town after the massacre took place.”

A ghost writer- is one who writes on someone else’s behalf, but keeps his identity secret. Since Jane has no talent in writing, she should hire a ghost writer to write her story on her travel to Singapore.

Only a ghost of one’s former self- to lose much weight, vitality, strength among others after sickness or health related situation. “She is only a ghost of her former self after last month’s accident.”

Grave

To digs one’s grave- means to do self destructive activities. “He’s digging his own grave by not having good relationship with his boss. Sooner or later he is going to lose his job.”

To turn over in one’s grave- If a dead person were alive he would be shocked or horrified. “If grandpa knew what you were doing with his properties he would turn over in his grave.”

Hell

All hell broke loose- bad things will happen or there will be troubles- “If you don’t make good your promise to marry her, then all hell will break loose.”

Come hell or high water- whatever the difficulties. “Come hell or high water, I’ll become a lawyer.”

Magic, spell

Black magic- an evil magic connected with the Devil. “His uncanny ability to turn a leaf into paper money is a black magic.”

Break a spell- to escape from the influence of someone. “His indifference to her feelings has broken the spell he has over her.”

Fall under someone’s spell- to be fascinated with someone. “Tom isn’t so handsome, but the beautiful young girl falls under his spell.”

Skeleton

Skeleton in one’s closet- is an embarrassing or shocking secret. “The boss is afraid to fire his secretary because she knows the skeletons in his closet.

Skeleton staff/crew- is an undermanned staff. “The recession has forced my boss to work with a skeleton staff.”

Soul

Soul mate- is someone who has the same characteristics with another person so that both of them are compatible with each other. “Tom and Jean can get along with each other well. They are really soul mates.”

Soul searching- consulting one’s conscience so that he will be able to decide on what to do of a pressing matter. “‘Should I leave my wife?’ Tom said to himself. It was a soul searching experience for him.”

Spirit

Dampen one’s spirit- to discourage a good mood. “She wants to go shopping, but the heavy traffic dampens her spirit.”

The moving spirit- is the originator of an idea. “Mr. Jones is the moving spirit behind the new school policies.”

The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak- an instance when a person cannot resist the demand of his body even if he wants to. “I would like to exercise early in the morning but could not. The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.”

To spirit away-is to remove something in a secret way. “I wonder who spirited away one of my favorite books from the shelf.”

Witch

A witch-hunt- is the searching out of someone with different views or harmful ideas in a manner that is sometimes unfair. “The political profiling of people or the curtailment of rights of those who are perceived to have dangerous ideas is a witch-hunt.”

White witch- is a woman who practices positive magic by casting spell or using herbal plants to heal someone. “I don’t think a witch comes in color so that we can call her a white witch or a black witch. A witch is always a witch.”

Santet is an Indonesia term for black magic used to harm or kill people. Using santet, someone can magically put nails, wires, or even insects into victim's body, causing pain, or even death. This dangerous magic is still exist today.

Photo: www.indospiritual.com

In many cultures in the world, we can find black magic practice with various different names. But they have one thing in common: they are used to harm or to kill person indirectly, with little or no physical contact at all. Many black magic practices are originated from prehistoric animism or shamanism, but some of the rituals and practices are still exist within groups of believers, even now. A lot of modern people tend to see this phenomenon as superstition, but traditional people who live in villages or secluded places might think otherwise.

In Indonesia, there is a form of black magic known as santet (also known as teluh in some region). Santet is basically a black magic performed with ritual and mantra (spell) in order to harm or assassinate a specific person. The common method used in santet, is by transferring an object (usually sharp or scary object, such as nails, wires, glass fragments; or small animals such as centipedes, worms, poisonous bugs) into victim’s body. I don’t know how to explain this using modern science. Although it may be possible to transform an object into energy, put it into someone’s belly, then change it back into object. But what kind of person who has the ability to do this without using any advanced technology or scientific method?

The person who has the ability to perform santet usually called dukun (similar to shaman or black magician). It is said that dukun possesses supernatural powers and can communicate with djinn and ancestors’ spirit. By using his supernatural powers and with help from djinn/spirits, dukun can perform santet. Sometimes they also need belongings from their victim to perform santet; such as hairs, clothes, or blood. Not every dukun who has the power is willing to perform santet, some dukuns only uses his power for healing and other good intentions. But you know, latest economic crisis affected many dukuns to sell their service for some amounts of money. Some of them even advertise santet on magazines and internet!

Old people often says that this kind of black magic was quite common in their time, and even considered normal many centuries ago. But since the spread of Islam and Christianity in Indonesia, the practice of santet have been greatly reduced (or at least hidden). I know that many people will think about it as a nonsense or ridiculous, I myself do not believe it 100%. It is possible that many information about santet has been distorted and misinterpreted, or will be explainable by science in near future. But aside from it, I do believe in existence of spirits and spiritual beings around us.

As an addition, here is some videos about santet I found on Youtube

Wires come out from woman’s belly. A case of santet?:

The African Vodun is a faith based on worship of the serpent of Dahomey and also in Voodoo Magic, a West African region, located west of Nigeria and the northern Gulf of Guinea. Contains Ardra and Whydah, which was taken over by the Dahomans early in the eighteenth century.

Image by Prefeitura de Olinda via Flickr

The Dahomey kingdom used the slave trade as the primary route of economic development with other nearby small kingdoms, during times of the slave trade.

Competition between kingdoms for supremacy of the slave trade came to violent ends to cause the establishment of rules and laws to regulate trade.

Dahomey became a powerful state in 1708 with King Agadja, who was commissioned to conquer the kingdoms of Ardra and Whydah for free passage to the Slave Coast. Thus quadrupled the size of the territory dahomeyano, obtaining a monopoly of European trade in the coastal zone.

The strength of the fon of Dahomey also rested on the authority of monarchs and maintaining a large army. The expansion through wars was another characteristic of their governments.

Already in 1724 were held by the Whydah kingdom Dahomey (Guidah) and in 1727 the Ardra, in the late nineteenth century. In 1960, Dahomey gained independence as the Republic of Dahomey. Succeeded as important political and social events, worship voodoo Dahomey was also used to dominate the politics and power.

However due to the characteristics of this religion, he managed to survive despite the circumstances in which there was slavery, which tended to disperse the members of the same clan or lineage. The rite of Dahomey is distinguished by its Loa. Whyday Before 1727 an independent kingdom, after that time a province of the kingdom of Dahomey.

In both conditions was a major center of worship of the serpent, and being located on the coast, became (and Badagry), a center for export also considerable European slaves to the New World. These developments have undoubtedly given Whydah great importance in the development of Haitian Voodoo. (Damballah) created all the waters of the earth.

In the form of a serpent, the movement of its 7,000 ripples formed the hills and valleys on earth and brought forth the stars and planets in the heavens. He forged metals and lightning heat to form the sacred rocks and stones. When he shed his skin in the sun, releasing all the water on earth, the sun shone on the water and created the rainbow.

Damballah loved the beauty of the Rainbow and asked his wife, Aida-Wedo. The revelations of the loa descended upon the first faithful in faith, a legendary city located in West Africa. Therefore, everything in life and all spiritual strength comes from faith. The home of all the devotees of Voodoo or Vodoun In death, the higher soul will return to reside with the loa and ancestors.

The Vudu always been from the beginning created to protect people against the dangers of daily life: wild animals, enemies, rivals, and otherwise preserving a healthy body and soul. During the period of slavery magic was transported from Africa to the Americas. It is an instinctive magic, and relates to man essentially for being.

Vudu is the fundamental expression of praise in the world through a human channel Rada Vudu or white, or Vudu Vudu black Petro was limited to a few that were hidden in secret societies. Voodoo is a religion believe in a way that creates and governs the earthly and spiritual orders. This “interaction” to a number of spirits called the Voodoo loa. The loa determine the course of human existence, and are therefore the worship of Voodoo practitioners. In fact, the axis of Voodoo ritual focuses on devotion to the loa.

This devotion includes belief and practice of work. The purpose of rituals is to make contact with a loa, to win their favor for assistance in the form of a more abundant food, a higher standard of living, and improved health.

Humans and Loa depend on each other, humans provide food and other materials, the Loa provides health, protection against evil powers and good fortune. Rituals are held to celebrate lucky events, to seek out a run of bad luck, they undertake stability and harmony family and children.

The Voodoo priests can be male (Houngan or Hungary), or female Guanga. A voodoo temple is called a Hounfour or Humfort. Where his devotees communicate with their god, and devotees communicate with people. An altar will be elaborately decorated with candles, pictures of the items under the powerful rule Loa on world affairs in the field of family, love, happiness, justice, health, wealth, labor, harvesting or hunting etc.

The offerings are made to the Loa appropriate to ensure success in these areas. For Voodoo, you need to find with the help of the loa immediate solution to everyday problems, include a divine Truth balance between natural and supernatural, and between the two forces. The magic Voodoo is one of the oldest and without certainly the most powerful that exists

. When Africans came to the establishments of their captors, it was necessary to restore the religions so that they could be practiced with some degree of consistency and make it accessible and created hounfor to start performing ceremonies First of all, it is important that I indicate Voudoun or Vudu clearly not as Santeria, Lukumi, Palo Mayombe, Umbanda, Kimbanda. Vudu Voudoun or developed in Haiti and the same cult Hoodoun a system of religious worship as practiced in Louisiana.

The French settled in the north of the Haitian island of Tortuga in 1626 and after this movement key progress in extending the French were brought with them African cults called Majumbes or Araras that originated in Dahomey.

The word originates Voudou Vudu or the principle meaning of the Fon language of life and spirit of this tradition practices are based on the cult of Loa ancestral spirits are included in Tete Pots, pots or bowls source who confine the soul. The packages are wrapped in a robe, a cloth collar or deceased personnel. The ceremonies were held in what is known as Hounfort.

Call the main Mambo and the priest Hougan. Vudu is divided into two main parts: the Rada and Petro. Rada is named for the dynasty of Dahomey Arada and Loas in this group. His character is comparatively quiet, while Petro is known for its violent Loas, which are received with loud sounds. Damballah-Wedo represents the male principle of nature. He is depicted as a snake that commands the respect of other forces and resides in the first place on the altar of Haiti. Named Ayida-Wedo, also represented as a serpent, is married to the feminine principle Damballah-Wedo. God is the Father.

His name is the phrase: “Synthesis of Snakes honored at the Old Temple of Serpents enWyda (Dahomey). Represents the Rainbow with his wife Aida Wedo.

Are drawn on the altar of hounfor like two snakes that seem to dive into the pond to form an arc in the sky (Arc-En-Ciel). In almost all the shrines is a basin filled with water at or near the altar. Its color is white.

All trees are its altars and “ridden” do not speak, but whistle. Its metal is silver and white linen fabric ritual worn by Hounsí.Su ritual food is the egg as a symbol of the cosmic matrix. but also found in the Ibo and even (as Damballah-Ge_rouge as Damballah-La-Torch) in Petro.

Its name is derived directly from “Danh-Gbwe.” One named Ayida Wedo Snakes Rada revered deities. Voudoun, representing the sky, the rainbow is her symbol, and as the wife of Damballah she shares her role as protector and donor cosmic blessing. His “name” can mean Wedo association (along with. Damballah with the worship of the serpent of Whydah or may simply be a part of the name of the Rainbow-rainbow-Deity of Nago, Audowido.

When slavers brought these people across the ocean to the Americas, Africans brought their religion with them. However, since slavery included fighting slaves of their language, culture and heritage, this religion had to take a few different ways. Had to be practiced in secret.

" If some prest is telling you that you are under black magic spell that means that he is asking you be a fool means his regular customer."

I have chat with several people who told me that they were under some spell that is why their all work was stuck and misfortune was following them because of some enemy cast a black magic spell on them. But several years later when i interview them again they were as unhappy as seemed before. If there have been some thing like black magic then their must be some thing as a cure to it. These all are the hallucinations created by the prests to misguide the people to call them again and again.

This world is revolving on its axis from the very first day then how is it possible that it the life of the people living on it could be changed. People mostly get jealous and try to make an effort to exchange their life and unfortunate matters with others. But Almighty God has created this world with ups and downs and full of challenges which are divided into levels, every next level is hard from the first one. If only example i can give you about the circle of life is the reality show Big Brother, you see people facing new challenges , one is given task to cheat his fellowes and one has to nominated on his weekly deeds . And all evil efforts and drama is useless because you are being watched and traced by audience. Life is same you can make efforts black or white but to fulfill your wishes The God is much wise from you!

"Black magic is the belief of practices of magic that draws on assumed malevolent powers."

Black magic is called black , because of the evil practices which are un usuall and abnormal performed by the black magic prests. There are two kinds of magic Black magic and white magic. It is called white magic in cristianity and spritual magic in Muslims. Black magic is involved when killing, injure, cause misfortune or distruction or for personal gain.

Black magic according to Chaus Magic corresponds to magic taht is performed arround the themes of death sepration, severance and entropy. This can refer to powerfull causes meant to bring the strongest effect, spell to sever emotion ties to objects or people and so on. The best place where they perform their evil acts is the graveyard . May be it is a plan to brain wash their customers showing these horror places. They black mail you emotionally by telling the success stories of others. Which is the first rule of this business

I have been researching on Black magic since ten years , i have seen million of people effected and in search of black magic prests internationally. Americans are mostly hallucinated by these kind of things. American government has banned such activities several times. Once a group of witches was also burned alive in America. In India black magic is also banned , in India prests started sacrificing newly born child to please their evil gods to make them very powerful. “So i interview a prest he told me that we can see the future as it is written on your palm but no one on this earth has the power to change it , by making few strokes on the paper we tell you that do this your wish will be accomplished , but this all is done by Almighty we have no power.”

This type of magic is invoked to kill, steal, to hurt, to kill or curse someone with bad luck or personal purposes, without taking into account the harm that might cause others. But not everything is known as black magic is under the auspices of malicious intentions, some even consider the benefits is beneficial, such as destroying disease.

They say white magic and black magic are opposed to each other. The difference between them is debatable, but theories fall into the following categories:

All are a land and water – all forms of magic are evil, whether it is white or black. This view associates, usually black magic with Satanism. People who maintain this view are those who belong to religions such as Christianity, Islam and Hinduism.

Doctrine black – black magic refers to the powers of darkness. This may or may not contrast with White magic, depending on the acceptance of dualism by the wizard.

Differences of form – Forms and components of black magic are different from those of white magic, because the different goals or interests that are spell. Harmful spells tend to include elements of symbolism sharp, thorny, acidic or hot, combined with personal objects of the target spell is heading to (hair, blood, personal organizer, etc.)

No link – both are forms of witchcraft, magic, but are completely different and are met in a unique way, even though they have almost similar effects. This statement is supported especially in literature. The two types of magic are portrayed as being as idealistic and diametrically opposed.

Separate but equal – white magic and black magic are one and the same, separated only by the ultimate goals and intentions. Potivit this theory, the same magic spell can belong to either white or black. Its nature is determined by the outcome.

The world is a very intimidating black magic if you allow it to be. There is nothing more frightening than the darkest object of fear. Therefore, the key to the mastery of fear is not aware of this evil around you gandurior Focus on the positive, you create an aura of positive energy and ignored all the threats hovering over the dark that you think.

The Haitian people and their beliefs

To understand the "Voodoo" one must first understand the culture that created it:

The word Voodoo (or Vodun) comes from the Yoruba dialect which means "mystery." This religion comes from West Africa where he was brought to Haiti by slaves. Once on the island is mixed with French and establishing Christianity voodoo. This belief is based on the worship of "praise" or "spirits", many of them the result of a mixture of Christian saints.

Within this religion there are “Bokor” who are in communication with the “praise.” These Bokor is who has the “power” to turn a person into a zombie.

Haiti is the poorest country of America, constantly subjugated to tyranny, colonialism and strong political interests, their cultural and economic growth has been delayed since 1804, when the slave revolt ended French colonialism making Haiti the first country to abolish slavery.

Legend has it that the slaves made a pact with the devil to get their independence and thus convirtión Haiti was the first country dedicated to the Devil.

The creeencia in magic in that country is such that there are paragraphs in the law that talk about the penalties to be imposed on persons such as “zombifiquen” someone.

What is “zombify” someone?

The aforementioned “Bokor” are the evil hands of the Haitian magic, it is said has the power to create zombies, the process would be:

Through the ingestion of a certain powder usually mixed with the drink, the victim loses his vital signs, death seems perfect for his absolute state of trance, in a country where medical services are not enough unexplained death is a matter for coroners.

This coupled with the fact that there are high temperatures in that country makes a rule a corpse be buried within 24 hours after his death, this greatly increases the chances of burying someone “alive.”

After 48 hours the effect of drugs that the “deceased” swallowed lapse, so the zombified recover his vital signs, is at the time when the Warlock “Bokor” I dig, once dug up the zombie is fed a paste of atropine and scopolamine, which are hallucinogenic disruptive impact on neurotransmitters and endorphins in the brain. This will ensure that your body is alive but his mind never again to an absolute consciousness.

You could say that the body is raised but not his soul, the brain damage is so severe that the affected party will not voluntarily be limited to follow orders given by your Bokor. Their role from now will be to act as a slave and his fate will almost certainly be a sugar cane plantation.

Zombie status is clear, say alleged witnesses, especially in the eyes: “His face was expressionless and staring. The eyelids were white, as if acid had been burned” (Hurston, 1939); “thing more horrible was the look, or rather, lack of vision. The eyes were dead, blind, devoid of expression “(Seabrook, 1971).

Rural India conceals an ongoing history of village women being hunted as witches.

Veiled behind secrecy and tradition hundreds of women in the countryside are tortured or killed after being accused of witchcraft. They are beheaded, drowned, lynched, and burnt alive or bludgeoned to death. At the minimum, they will be beaten, stripped and have their hair cut off. In the states of Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Jalpaiguri, and Chattisgarh at it is estimated by the Free Legal Aid Committee that least 200 women will be known to lose their lives this year. According to the FLAC, in the past 15 years at least 2500 women have been murdered. In Jharkhand there is a law against blaming anyone of being a witch but its result has been negligible. The punishment for those convicted of the accusation is Rs 1000 fine and a jail term of up to one year. Less than 2% of those accused of witch-hunting will be convicted. Many rural women will not file a complaint with the police out of fear or for reasons of distance or illiteracy.

In the pastoral and forest communities, there is a dearth of education and medical care. When someone falls ill, the local medicine man or tribal doctor, an “ojhas”, tells the patient that a witch has cast a spell on them or had a demon cast the spell. Other reasons for witch hunts are dying and orphaned children, infertile women, theft, drought, floods and poor harvests. Widows are the main target of witch hunts and the reason behind this is property. After her demise at the hands of the villagers, the same villagers divide the widow’s property amongst themselves. Women, widow or not, are also targeted for refusing the advances of village men or to settle feuds. If the accused is not killed she will often be forced to abandon her home and family or commit suicide.

The suffering of certain women in rural India continues unseen, hidden away. In tribal and rustic areas where belief in superstition continues along with socio-economic troubles and natural disasters this practice will continue as well.

My grandma taught me a technique (much like black magic) which can be used to attract people with your eyes. Not only that it sort of gives you a magnetic power to pull in.

I know most of us probably don’t believe in black magic or anything like it. But this technique is not exactly some spell casting or witchery.

In the eastern, Islamic and even Hindu culture there are believed to be other forms of knowledge which are normally hidden from us. The knowledge of numbers and astrology come within this category.

This technique, which my grandma taught me when I was young to attract people towards me just by looking at them, comes from the same realm. It’s kind of like a training for your eyes. This may sound unrealistic but believe me it does work if done properly.

Here’s what you have to do:

Take a blank white piece of paper

With a marker draw a small back spot in the center (about 0.5-1 cm)

Stick this paper on a wall using some glue (the dot should be level with your eyes while standing)

Now stand about 8- 10 feet away from the wall

Look at the dot

Keep looking at the dot using all your concentration

Don’t look at anything else

Do this practice daily for about 10 min

Do this for about a month or more if you like (after this there are other steps in the technique)

Some tips:

Try finding a wall that doesn’t have any other marks

The wall should preferably be white

Remember to put all your focus on the dot don’t be distracted

Try to clear your mind of every thought while doing this technique

Other benefits of doing this:

As you might have already guessed this technique will help improve your concentration and focus

It can also help you in meditating

This step is actually the first in a 3 step technique. In the complete technique you would progress from watching a dot to watching a candle flame and then to watching the moon each for a few months. It is also said that when you start to watch the moon you start seeing horrible faces which try to scare you and distract you but you can’t be scared or distracted by them because if you are then you would either become very ill or may even die. Only when you pass the last stage without being afraid do you truly get the full benefits of this technique.
