Ten Tips to Improve Listening Skills on The Telephone

Stay focused
Prevent yourself from being distracted by colleagues or external noises and concentrate on what your caller is saying.

Detect emotions
Listen to the emotion in your caller’s voice. Does it match or endorse the words they are using?

Ask questions
Ask questions to gain more information on points you need to clarify.

Don’t interrupt
You listen more effectively when you’re not talking, so refrain from interrupting your caller. Let them finish what they are saying, interruptions may break their train of thought.

Don’t pre-empt
Avoid pre-empting what your caller is going to say, chances are you will be wrong and miss some of the content of their conversation.

Recap key facts
Summarise and reflect back to check you have heard the key facts and content of the caller’s conversation correctly. It also lets the caller know you have understood them. Statements such as “What I’m hearing is…” and “Sounds like you are saying…” are great ways to reflect back and summarise.

Pen and paper at the ready
Have a pen and paper to hand and get into the habit of making short quick references to any questions you want to ask or points you wish to raise or comment on. When your caller has finished speaking refer back to your notes and take action. If you are thinking of answers and responses whilst the caller is speaking, you are not listening.

Say it again
If you are having difficulty listening, make the necessary adjustments. You might say, “I’m sorry I missed that last point. Please repeat that for me.”

Watch the stereotypes
Avoid stereotyping individuals by making assumptions about how you expect them to act and what you expect them to say. This will bias your listening.

Be aware of the barriers to listening
• We think we’re right and the other person is wrong
• We feel we have to provide help right away
• We prefer to talk rather than listen
• We are waiting for gaps or pauses to jump in with our response

And don’t forget to keep practising…

First Experience : Red Orchestra Ostfront

I have spent afew hours trying out red orchestra ostfront 41-45, and I have to admit I am satisfied with the gameplay.

Now before we get into too much detail, I have played my share of run and gun games, so naturally if your a veteran of Red Orchestra or Arma, then you know that I didn’t last too long.

For a quick rundown of Orchestra as I understand it, it is a realistic first person shooter that takes place on the Russian front lines of World War II.

I chose a server that was currently playing a map with a grassland hill environment. I chose the rifleman class, since that was the only one currently available to me at the time. So I charged around and someone who knew the ropes, someone with a sniper rifle took advantage of the moment and within moments I saw my character helmet less and dead on the ground. I clearly did not know what I was doing so I switched to another server.

This time I was put into a ruined city, I was given the option of using a semi-automatic rifle and this time while I did use some self-restraint, and I did get “some” kills, that run and gun habit kept me impatiently running into the line of fire, so naturally I didn’t get a very high score, although my team did win…….. There was a satisfying feeling about stalking the insides of buildings and having unsuspecting Russian soldiers run to their deaths in doorways.

The third server I went to was.. what I believe to be a small custom made map. Now I didn’t have to restrain that “run and gun” urge as much as I needed to on the other larger maps, but it was easier to get more kills by tactically camping than just running around with an automatic.

note: even if you decide to run around with an automatic, you’ll realize that the recoil of the said automatic will make it difficult to actually hit any enemies, even if the enemies are infact 6 feet in front of you.

I got my kills by camping in one space for a minute and then moving to another space. Now for some people this is probably not a fun way to play a game, but for someone like myself I do rather enjoy it.

To conclude… The positives of the game , include realism and the ability to drive vehicles, authentic weapons and roles, plus you do have to realize the setting is rather unique considering I haven’t played many world war II games that focus on the frontlines between Russia and Germany.

One trait that might be considered both positive and negative is that there are indeed one-shot kills. Whether it counts as a positive or negative trait, I’ll leave to the reader.

The negatives include the fact that… yeah you can’t run and gun. Its not an option. This isn’t a Call of Duty game. Your score is probably going to reflect on your patience and endurance rather than your reflexes. So if your a patient person, this game is definitely for you.

Canadian Politician Tendered an Apology From Paksiatn

Toronto: A Canadian politician John Crosbie, has tendered an apology after being harshly criticised for a joke about Pakistan and suicide bombers, local media reported.

According to reports, Pakistani students from the Memorial University of Newfoundland condemned the politician for the joke.

The politician had cracked a joke last week at a ceremony for ministers. He said: “I called a suicide hotline. I got a call center in Pakistan. When I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited and asked me if I could drive a truck.”

Following the criticism, the politician apologised saying ‘it wasn’t a racist comment’.

What is it to be intelligent?

Your intelligence relies on your ability to retain information and extract it when needed. For an example when you are having a maths exam the outcome of that test relies on your ability to extract previously learned information. That previously learned information had to be retained with in your brain for you to later call upon for use, in this case for use in a maths exam. Now retaining and extracting information does not sound hard, so why aren’t we all geniuses? We aren’t because we humans get distracted when retaining information, we also forget information that we have not used in a while. For instance a 50 year old will more than likely have forgotten how to do algebraic equations that they once knew how to do when they were 16. Now the retained information about algebraic equations is still there but the pathways to it within your brain have not been used in a while, so it harder and takes longer to extract that information, sometimes pathways are rendered useless and cannot ever extract the information along that specific pathway. However new pathways can be formed to retrieve the information, an example of this is a sudden remembrance of an event you may of experienced and you needed a certain smell or image to rebuild the path way or in a common phrase “jog your memory”. So retaining and extracting information are the foundations of intelligence. The most important part however is the ability to think objectively. Thinking objectively, to put it simply is to get things done. You set yourself a goal, complete it, then move on to the next one. This also aids your ability to problem solve. Thinking objectively however is increasingly difficult as we have MANY ways to procrastinate and procrastinating slows or blocks this ability as we are unable to fulfil and create new goals. So simply intelligence is the ability to retain (learn, remember) information and extract (Say what you have learnt, call upon it) it, then use it effectively.

Modern Warfare Three

I have been a fan of the COD Series for a very long time and am very excited for Modern Warfare three coming out in a few months. These last few days I have been searching on-line for the information about the game and I had found a few game plays of it on you tube . I’ll put a few more links to the game plays if you comment and like this post. Send me a friend request and I’ll send you a message showing you all the videos on you-tube about it.

Let me tell you a little bit about the game plays I’ve seen so far.

1. The UMP45 and Spas-12 is returning (MP5, ACR, M1, Striker, M16A1, SCAR ) . I think this is good and bad at the same time because these two guns can be your best friends in MW2 if you were using them, but they’re your worst enemies if you get killed by them. (So I’m just hoping they tweak these guns a little bit and make them equal compared to the other sub machine guns and shotguns).

2. Quickscoping is Back. The Sniper Rifle I’ve seen are the Barret, the AS50, and the L11BA (Similar to the L96A1). There might be more Sniper Rifles, but they’ve not shown them so far.

3. The Killstreaks shown in the video are regular Killstreaks: UAV, PREDATOR MISSILE, AND THE ATTACK HELICOPTER.

4. The New Weapons I had seen are the CM901, FMG9 (Secondary Automatic Weapon), and a few more!!!

5. The Graphics are a little dull compared to MW2, but other than that It looks exactly like MW2 ( I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a Bad thing).

I Want to Throw Away My Cell

I wan to throw my cell away

Every one wants to sell some thing to me. This is my cell phone making troubles for me. I am registered with do not call/do not disturb. However, to no avail.

Last night was the height of it when a message telling me to have a haircut at a particular place about 2000km away from my place woke me up. Actually, I was waiting for a call from my daughter whom I had seen off yesterday in the morning for Bangalore and was worried about her safety.

I felt like throwing my cell away. I have registered a complaint against the service provider though they are not going to do any thing because they are semi government service and no good at listening to complaints.

Have any one of you felt like that, ever? However, the question is if I through my cell phone, where shall I get another one? However, I am not going to take this lying down and will sure do some thing to make them learn some thing.

Colonel Roy Mustang, the renowned Flame Alchemist, sat in his comfy chair behind his desk and used his foot to lazily spin himself in circles.

Boredom. Complete and utter boredom.

Paperwork sucks. Mustang spun himself faster. All he really wanted to do was set the whole desk on fire, and see everyone come running… watch the glorious plumes of fires rise up and consume the damned paperwork… the damned desk… hell, the whole damn office!

“Colonel?” Riza Hawkeye entered his office. “Sir, you have a-”

“I’m bored, Hawkeye,” he complained, spinning his chair faster.

“Ummm, yes sir,” Hawkeye agreed, rolling her eyes. “You have a-”

CRASH! Mustang’s chair tipped over, unceremoniously dumping the Colonel on the floor.

Hawkeye blinked. “Should I just come back later, sir?”

Maybe it was the hit on the head and the loss of a few hundred brain cells, but Mustang began to think. He was forming a plan… an exceptionally devious plan… or maybe it was that he finally went insane. “Hawkeye…?” he asked slowly.

“Yes, Colonel?”

“Are the Elric brothers in the building?”

“I think so, sir.”

“YES! I mean… good.” Mustang went to stand but again hit his head, this time against the bottom of the desk. “Ow! Shit!” Military psychologists would later pinpoint this as the exact moment when Roy Mustang lost what few brain cells he had left after the first knock on the head and abandoned the last shreds of his sanity on the side of an old dirt road. They were then picked up by an old lady, who thought they might taste good. The ensuing eating of the sanity left Mustang with no hope of ever getting it back. Poor Colonel Mustang.

“Sir?” Hawkeye waved her hand in front of the blankly staring Colonel, who had just seen his sanity eaten by an old woman.

Mustang leaped across the desk and swept Hawkeye into a passionate kiss.

Riza’s eyes widened, and she took a step back. “Colonel!”

“Roy,” Mustang whispered in her ear, then took off at a sprint down the hall.

Hawkeye was left standing in Mustang’s office, with one thought running through her mind; What the fuck? “And men say we’re confusing,” she muttered under her breath, shaking her head.

The Elric brothers were minding their own business, walking down a random hall, being bored out of their minds.

They had no idea the calamity that was about to befall them.

“Fullmetal!” they heard Mustang yell.

The two turned. “Hey, Mustang,” Ed replied nonchalantly, showing his complete disregard for authority.

Mustang didn’t bother to correct the younger Alchemist to address him by his rank. “Elric, I need you to do something for me.”

“What now?“

“Sugar!”

The Elric brothers froze. “What?” Al asked timidly.

“I-want-sugar,” Mustang said slowly, as if he were speaking to a small child.

“Umm…” Al looked as confused as it was possible for a suit of armor to look. “Why?”

“I have a plan… And if it doesn’t work I can blame it on you, Elric.” Mustang was practically bouncing in malicious glee.

“Okay, we’ll do it,” Ed said, slowly backing away.

Mustang laughed evilly and dashed away down the hall, and it was then that the Elric brothers noticed that he was only wearing his socks. “WHEEE!” he cried, skidding around a corner.

“Brother?”

“I know, Al. I’m kinda afraid too.”

“Should we get him what he asked for?”

“Yes!” Ed grinned. “As long as he’s on this… whatever it is he’s on… he can’t order me around!”

“It’s all about you, isn’t it, Brother?”

“Me and my sanity, Al. If Mustang drives me insane, who’s going to find the Stone and get your old body back?”

Al nodded. “Okay, Brother, but you’re already insane.” He started running. “And short!” he shouted over his shoulder.

Ed’s eyes narrowed and he sprang after. “WHO’RE YOU CALLING SHORT YOU GIANT HUNK OF TIN!”

Alphonse giggled. Maybe this whole ‘State Alchemist’ gig wasn’t so bad. He could run for hours around the whole building, while Edward would quickly tire. Heehee.

“FULLMETAL!” he suddenly heard a female voice shout, and Al screeched (literally) to a halt.

“Uh-oh.”

“WHAT ELSE ARE YOU GONNA SAY, HUH?” Edward jumped up and grabbed the ribbon dangling from the top of Alphonse’s helmet and tried to rip it off. The whole head came off instead.

“Brother!”

“HA! LOOK AT YOUR HEAD!” Ed used the ribbon to whip the helmet around. “ARE YOU GETTING DIZZY, YOU OVERGROWN METAL PIECE OF-”

A gunshot rang through the air, and Ed froze. Unfortunately, the helmet did not. Its momentum spun him around and he fell straight on his ass. The helmet flew into the air and landed snuggly over Edward’s head.

Al started to laugh. He couldn’t help it.

“With respect, would you two SHUT UP AND LISTEN TO ME!” In the sudden silence, they heard the ominous sound of a pistol being cocked.

The Elric brothers froze for the second time to see a severely irritated Hawkeye. Her pistol was smoking, and she had it ready for another shot.

Al burst out laughing again. Seeing your head on your brother’s body tends to do that to a person and override all better judgement. Better judgement being that when a woman with a gun threatened one to be silent, it was best to do as she said.

Hawkeye was rapidly moving from simply irritated to extremely pissed off. The calm coolness was a thing of the past, today. She always got touchy when her Colonel started to do strange things that defied explanation. “ALPHONSE ELRIC, TAKE YOUR HEAD OFF YOUR BROTHER!”

Al jumped. “I’m sorry, Lieutenant.” He meekly removed the helmet and set it back where it belonged.

Ed’s eyes were huge. “You shot at us!”

“Brilliant deduction, Fullmetal,” Hawkeye answered sarcastically.

Ed decided to take it at face value. “I try.”

“What’s wrong with Colonel Mustang?” Riza asked, slightly hoarse from all the yelling.

Ed shrugged. “Damned if I know.”

“What did he want?”

“Sugar,” Al responded as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

“What?”

“You heard us,” Edward said. “Mustang wants sugar.”

“WHEEE!”

They turned to see Mustang flying toward them in his big, comfy, wheeled chair. “What the-” Ed started as the chair whizzed by them.

“Umm sir, those are-”

CRASH!

“Stairs,” Alphonse finished lamely. They rushed over to see what had happened.

“Oh my God…” Riza breathed. The chair was broken, the wheels still spinning. There was no sound or movement coming from the limp body of the Colonel. She dropped her pistol and ran down the stairs. “Sir? Sir! Dammit, Roy Mustang, talk to me!”

The two Elrics looked at each other, and the next sound was: “Urrggh! YOU ARE SO IMMATURE! SIR! I HATE YOU! SIR!” and Riza came stomping back up the stairs muttering to herself. She picked up her pistol and looked at the brothers as if daring them to say something.

Edward edged away to stand behind Al, and Al put his hands up in surrender. Hawkeye stomped away.

The two cautiously peeked around the corner of the stairwell to see Mustang lying with his hands behind his head, staring dreamily at the ceiling. “God, she’s hot,” he said.

“I HEARD THAT, COLONEL!” Hawkeye shouted.

“What’d you do to her?” Ed asked.

Mustang grinned his huge idiot’s grin. “Nothing…”

Hawkeye returned… wielding an Uzi in each hand!

Roy yelped and scrambled up the stairs. He pulled off Al’s helmet and stuffed himself inside Al’s body. “If you tell her where I am, I can promise hours of paperwork for both of you!” he threatened before disappearing inside the armor.

“Elrics! Where is that-” several moments of profanity followed, “Colonel!”

“Uhhh, I don’t know,” Ed lied, the threat of endless paperwork hanging over his head. Being shot wasn’t nearly as painful as paperwork… and if all else failed, he could hide inside Al too.

Hawkeye looked at the suspiciously. “Alphonse, why are you vibrating?”

“Uhhh… kitty!” Al took off.

“Al!” Ed ran after.

“I’M NOT DONE WITH YOU TWO YET!”

“Stop shaking,” Al told Mustang. “You’re going to get us shot!”

Mustang popped Al’s head off. “Is she still following?”

“No. Can I have my head back?”

Mustang jumped out of Al’s body and dashed away.

“You’re welcome!” Ed shouted sarcastically. “Prick.”

Predictably, Hawkeye ran up soon after. “Where did he go?” she demanded icily.

Edward looked at the Uzis, then smiled evilly. “That way,” he said, pointing the way the Colonel had gone.

“That was mean, Brother,” Al said as Hawkeye sprinted down the hall.

Ed looked very pleased with himself. “Uh-huh.”

They heard the guns clatter to the floor without a shot being fired. The older brother again found himself peeking cautiously around a corner into the lobby of Headquarters, and his eyes widened.

“What’s going on? Let me see!” Al looked over Ed’s shoulder. “Oh,” he said, more subdued. “Brother, are they-”

“Yeah.”

“Here?“

“Yep.”

“Ewww…”

The Elrics retreated hastily.

Jean Havoc was on his way outside the building to have a smoke without offending everyone around him when he came across Mustang and Hawkeye. Contrary to what the Elrics had assumed, the two were not having sex. (Alchemists… minds in the gutter, all of them.) They were making out in the lobby with a pair of Uzis at their feet. How the secretary at the welcoming desk had not noticed this was a mystery in and of itself.

Havoc looked at the pack of cigarettes, then at the door leading back into the main part of the building. He decided to make his way around and find a side door rather than disturb the two, who were definitely… busy. A wise choice, considering that it would have been a toss up between the Flame Alchemist and the weapons expert over who would have killed him first.

Too bad the young boy with the long black hair standing outside the door didn’t make the same decision Havoc did.

Poor, poor Wrath.

Should We Play Counsellor to Our Friends?

When something is wrong, you will no doubt turn to your best friend for advice. However, on the odd occasion, one person ends up taking their friends problems under control to the extent that it eventually takes over their own lives.

This does not mean people who simply ask for advice, but some individuals phone their friends several times per day, and are on the phone for an awful long time when the other person might not actually have enough time to spare but they’re just far too polite to comment about it.

If you feel that this is you, the first thing to do would be to ask your friend whether they think they could benefit from professional help. If they do not open up to this possibility, it might be worth you mentioning to them that you wish that you could support them, but that you sometimes just don’t have enough time to enable you to do so because of your full and hectic schedule of your own.

This is nothing to be ashamed of, as our friends should not take us for granted yet this often happens without us even realising that it is the case.

Get your own life back, and remember that you are worth a lot as a friend, but this doesn’t mean that people have to take advantage of you.
