Jean de Léry was a French Huguenot explorer in 16th Century Brazil, whom by far had one of the best travel experiences of his time. While traveling in Brazil, he encountered the Tupinambas whom were notorious for their cannibalistic rituals. Similar to today’s readers, his accounts of incredible “savage” behavior shocked his audience. Unexpectedly, Léry’s History of a Voyage to the Land of Brazil simultaneously condemned the pious French society for savage behavior. In this paper, I am going to argue that through comparing the Tupinambas to the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, Jean de Léry characterized the two events as far more similar than his audience supposed.
