Among the mindless shoot-em-up ones, there are rare instances of an online game about poverty. The Urban Ministries of Durham in NC created Spent, in which players role-play one of the working poor.

Imagine an online game about poverty.

I’m not talking about shoot-em-ups where you have to shoot opossums, raccoons, and other wild but rabid animals because you don’t have real food. I’m not talking about finding and stabbing rats for that reason. I’m not talking about finding a private place to dig up latrines if nature calls.

You’re one of the working poor. If you don’t know, that’s somebody who works at or below the minimum wage and is struggling to make ends meet. You’ve just lost your job, house, and savings. You’re a single parent. You just have a thousand-dollar budget to stretch. Your three options are to work as a waiter/waitress, warehouse worker, or a temporary office worker. You applied for the latter, knowing that the pay is enough, but you failed the typing test. The warehouse position requires you to be able to lift 20 pounds.

So you apply to the position waiting tables at a casual restaurant.

You opt out of health insurance because of the high premiums. You chose to live away from the city (which is cheaper), but you pay dearly for gas. You don’t have enough to pay the gas and electric bills, so you ask a friend to do so via social media. Your child got bullied for having free or reduced lunch. Your landlord found out that you have a pet, but you took it to the animal shelter because you can’t afford to pay the fee. People from your workplace are in the process of organizing a union, but you ignore them to keep your job. You risk your waistline but save your budget by eating a burger instead of the more pricy salad should you forget your lunch.

Well, because the Urban Ministries of Durham, in North Carolina, created Spent, you no longer have to imagine such a hard-hitting, dark game among the match-three-jewels mindwasters.

The interactivity is wonderful. We all have mud from the saliva of homeless and poverty advocates on our charity-blind eyes and this game is the “pool of Siloam” to wash our faces in which we finally see the lives of those living paycheck-to-paycheck. Many of us are lucky to pay our internet bills, but this game teaches us that most low-income families have to seek public libraries to go online. You have to budget for groceries, which have to stretch for a few weeks.

The game gives you opportunities that would benefit you the most and take the edge off stress from a low-wage occupation, but sacrifices would be made. For instance, you have a child whose class is going on a field trip to the museum and it costs some money. If he or she goes, your budget would obviously be drained. If not, he or she has to stay in the office, making him or her out on such a learning experience.

There are two endings to the game according to how much money you have spent (no pun intended). If you spend all your money before the end of the month, the game ends. If you do make it, you won, but the stark messages reads, “…but rent’s due tomorrow.”

Anyone can play this hard-hitting game. If you are one of the people the player portrays in the game, tell them that you’re the protagonist and share the game with everyone. If you are affluent, whether living on a frugal lifestyle even with a 6-figure income, give the game a whirl – no, several whirls. Maybe it would either make you plan your staycation volunteering at a homeless shelter or food bank, take a real vacation doing the same out-of-state, or giving to the poor at least weekly.

Don’t you wish more games like this should be made?

Is this possible?

If you have a charity held close to your heart and you are thinking about raising money for it, then you might be wondering where you can start, and how you can build this into your every day life when you are busy enough at it is. The good news is that there are many things that you can do in order to raise money, and you don’t have to be working on them every day of the week, either.

Sponsored events are one of the most popular things that you can do to raise money at the moment, and this is something that really doesn’t need to take up a lot of your time. Last year, I did a sponsored slim and raised £400. I was able to do this as well as my degree, because it wasn’t much extra effort to just stop eating junk and do a little bit of exercise, and stop eating the amount of junk food that I may have done in the past. You can gather sponsors from people in your spare time, on social networking websites, via your friends and family: anything providing that you get the money at the end of the day. Other ideas are sponsored jogs, skips, swims, eats, anything that you think people would be willing to pay you to do.

If you use the popular online auction website eBay, you can actually donate a small amount of money every time that you buy anything on there. You can set your account to do this automatically, and this means that you don’t even have to think about it, but an extra £1 will go to them every time you choose to buy something. This is a briliant way to raise money, because it doesn’t take any effort or thought, yet can donate a fair amount in the long term. You could also encourage your family and friends to set this as their charity as well if they don’t have one, and this means that you would be able to raise even more money for the charity that you had in mind.

If you have a spare few hours at the weekends, then a lot of supermarkets are happy for you to do a collection at their doors with a bucket. This means that the shopppers who pass by will have the option to put a small amount of change into your bucket, and you would be surprised if you saw just how much money you can actually get during the course o the average day. Some places also let you put buckets on the side of the tills, and this is a great place to be able to put them as it means that you are able to get the attention of people who have just received their change from the till attendant. Whichever of these options you decide to take, it is important to remember that there are many things that you can do in order to earn some money for charity, and not all of them have to take up a lot of time or effort either.

How to raise money.

If you want to organise a fundraising event for a charity that is close to your heart, then you might be worried about the fact that it is going to be hard work for you. Not only does it take a lot of time, but it can also cost money, which means that you might as well have just made a donation to the charity yourself. Luckily, there is no need to get too stressed about it, as there are things that you can do which mean that you can raise some money.

Organising a benefit night is easier than it sounds. There are a lot of places that allow you to hold events there for free, as it is easy for them to make money at the bar if they have a lot of people in there who are going to be buying drinks. You could do with teaming up with some other people who want to raise money for the same charity, as they would be able to sell some tickets as well and this would mean that you should be able to fill the room for the night. You should make the tickets free, but then say that if you attend, you have to bring some kind of raffle prize and an item of food for the buffet. Each ticket should say on it what you would like each person to bring, and this will prevent too many of the same thing being brought by many different people. The way that you would then make the money would be by selling raffle tickets on the night, maybe playing bingo and selling cards, and then playing small games with cash prizes for which you could easily sell tickets on the day of the event.

If you live locally to schools, which a lot of people do, then you would find that they are usually very willing to help out with events which would be of benefit to a charity. If you ask them, I am sure that they would be willing to hold a non uniform day at some point, usually towards the end of the term, and they would be able to charge each child £1 to be able to come to school in their own clothes. You could also encorporate things like colouring competitions or raffles in with the day, and this should mean that you are able to make a fair amount of money for the charity on the day. There are a lot of businesses that would be happy to help you with anything that you might be doing, as they would benefit from the publicically from the event. It would help if you had local newspapers involved, as they would then be able to post the stories and make the events more public. The more publicity you get from people, the more likely you are to be able to raise the money that you are aiming to. A lot of charities don’t have a great number of fundraisers, so every single pound that you raise can mean a lot for the people who are involved in that charity. They will be very grateful for the amount of help that you have been giving to them.

Altruism or being altruistic is when one gives selflessly.

There are many people in this world that enjoy helping others. Using charity and donating to great causes makes people feel good about themselves…

Altruism is when you give and help to anyone that needs it, without expecting a reward for yourself, without bragging it to the world and without expected the reciever to say thank you (although, that is always nice).

But I wonder, how often do the charity givers and do-gooders actually practice altruism, and how often do they practice near their own homes?

Do they help children and poverty in their own neighborhoods? So many people donate to the SPCA ( animal shelters) and the United Christians Children Fund (helping in Africa), these are of course, are great deeds.

How often does one look in their own neighborhoods and offer a hand? Their are poor children in every town and city, going to bed hungry at night. Dying animals in nearly every alley. Babies dying from drug addicted mothers, women dying from abusive husbands, homeless living in neighborhood parks and under bridges.

Before touting your great deed of helping others, have you helped in your own back yard? If you have not, I say shame on you, your deed is no greater than throwing a penny into the wishing well.

Here are some helpful ideas about how you can raise money for charity.

If you have always had a charity close to your heart and wished that you could help them, but you’ve never known what to do, then this article might be able to help you. Having the intention to make money is fantastic, but you might be a little bit short of ideas, which is where this article could help you.

Sponsored Events. This is something that a lot of people do, and there is no reason why you couldn’t do it as well. Basically, you tell people what you are planning to do, and then they pledge to give you money based on conditions of completing the event that you said you would. Some sponsor one set amount, and others change the amount depending on how much you manage to achieve. Some ideas of what could be sponsored: walk, run, bungee, swim, skip, slim, skydive, cycle, hair shave, crawl, wheelbarrow race, marathon, 5K, 10K, mountain climb, bean bath, silence, stay awake, stand up, stay still, tweet, sing, play (music instrument), play (sport), face paint.

Sales. If you work somewhere that you would be able to have access to places, such as in an office, or you attend somewhere like a church, you might want to organise a sale. This could be anything, such as a bake sale or a bring and buy sale in aid of your chosen charity. You might find that more people are willing to help out as they may have things lying around at home that they have wanted to get rid of. Someone’s trash is another’s treasure! If you have a talent for making things like crafts, then you could make these and sell them in aid of your charity. Most towns have craft fairs from time to time, and you might be able to put up a stall at one of these.

Get the community involved. Local schools are a fantastic way to get some money raised. If you speak to most of them, they will be willing to hold a non uniform day in aid of your charity, as it doesn’t take too much effort for them to do so and is good for them to be seen supporting charities. The idea here is that each child/staff pays £1 to be able to come in their own clothes that day, and all profits go to the charity. If you choose to do a non uniform day, then it might be good if you went into the school to give a short talk about your charity, although this is not completely necessary in all circumstances. Other ideas for local schools could be to set up things like colouring competitions as this is something that a lot of children get excited about taking part in.

eBay. A lot of charities are listed on eBay and you are able to donate £1 per purchase to your chosen charity by default. I set my eBay to sponsor my charity (The Cystic Fibrosis Trust) and have donated over £100 just from my eBay sales over the course of the last two years, which is something that you really don’t notice at the time but all of the money adds up.

Local Press. If you choose to do anything like a bake sale or a sponsored event, it might be a good idea to get in touch with your local press to see if there is anything that you can do in order to publicise your event or your charity. Most local papers will be willing to give you a small section of their paper, and some even do full page things with photos.

One of the things that you have to remember is that contacts are key. When you get people saying that they’re going to help you, keep them in mind for future events because they might feel as though they would be able to help you again. Over the course of my fundraising, I have built up a very healthy database of contacts who I know that I can always call upon if I want to do anything which requires any kind of help.
If you are involved with a charity, feel free to tweet/share this link to your followers. The more people who are aware about things that they can do to raise money, the more money we will be able to raise in the future.

Some Notable Quotations on Charity

Charity is one of the virtues that are essential for human co – existence and harmony. It should begin at home as a saying goes. It was one of the moral virtues that Peter admonished us to develop (2 Peter 1:7 – KJV). Virtually all the religions lay emphasis on charity. Charity is provision of help. Literarily, Charity is love. I can add that charity is love in practical terms. It involves giving money or material things to assist someone. These can be done as an individual or a group. Today we have charitable organizations that help people in need in various areas.

Charity is kindness, humanity, compassion, goodwill, benevolence, sympathy, consideration, etc. It is very important that we should always extend charity to people when we are privileged because it could be you or me. Here are some sayings on charity.

1. Charity is a virtue of the heart and not of the hands. -Addison

2. Charity is a virtue of the heart; not of the hands. -Anonymous

3. The living need charity more than the dead. -Arnold

4. Every charitable act is a stepping stone toward heaven. -Beecher

5. No sound out to be heard in the church but the healing voice of Christian charity. -Burke

6. Better to expose ourselves to ingratitude than fail in assisting the unfortunate. -Du Coeur

7. There is much truth in the observation that charity eases the conscience of the rich more often than it eases the condition of the poor. -Flamm

8. Charity sees the need not the cause. -German Proverb

9. Charity gives itself rich; covetousness hoards itself poor. -German Proverb

10. Charity is the spice of riches. -Hebrew Proverb

11. There can be no greater argument to a man of his own power than to find himself able not only to accomplish his own desires, but also to assist other men in theirs; and this is that conception wherein consisteth charity. -Hobbes

12. As the purse is emptied the heart is filled. -Hugo

13. The charity that hastens to proclaim its good deeds, ceases to be charity, and is only pride and ostentation. -Hutton

14. We have made the slogan “Charity begins at home” a part of our religion-although it . . . is directly contrary to the story of the Good Samaritan. Charity begins where the need is greatest and the crisis is most dangerous. -Laubach

15. Justice forbids us to use slander or libel. Charity goes still further: it orders us to defend absent persons against slander or libel. -L’Etoile

16. Charity is never lost: it may meet with ingratitude, or be of no service to those on whom it was bestowed, yet it ever does a work of beauty and grace upon the heart of the giver. -Middleton

17. Charity is a naked child, giving honey to a bee without wings. -Quarles

18. The charitable give out at the door, and God puts in at the window. -Ray

19. True charity is the desire to be useful to others without thought of recompense. -Swedenborg

21. I hate nobody; I am in charity with the world. -Swift

22. Loving-kindness is greater than laws; and the charities of life are more than all ceremonies. – The Talmud

23. I rather think there is an immense shortage of Christian charity among so-called Christians. –Truman

24. I do not give lectures or a little charity, when I give I give myself. –Whitman

Neddie Seagoon made Sir Harry a household name as the founder gang of four who made millions laugh with the Goon Show. I cite the life and times of a star quality performer, who will remain in the hearts of many for decades to come, because he had that likeable factor, which so many so called celebrities today do not have.

Family

Sir Harry Secombe was born on the 8th September 1921 and he died at the age of 79. He was born in a council house in St Thomas District, Swansea. He wa the third eldest of four children of mother Nellie Jane Gladys (nee Davies). His mother was a shop manageress and his father Frederick Ernest Secombe a grocer.

Harry died in hospital on 11th April 2011 at aged 79 years, from prostrate cancer, his ashes atre interned in the parish church of Shamley Green. A memorial service was held at Wesminster Abbey, London and among those attending were Prince Charles and the Duke Of Edinburgh.

From the age of 11 years he attended Dynevan State Secondary School in Central Swansea. It is said that when at school he feared being bullied by the older boys and would “act the fool” and mimic the teachers, this earned him much credability with his hard headed peers.

The family were committed Christian’s and Harry sang in his local choir.

Career

Harry left school in 1937 and worked at Baldwin’s store until 1938 when he joined the “Teritorial Army and was a Lance Bombardier in the “Royal Artillery Regiment. Harry had a nickname for his unit which he called “The Five Mile Snipers” he went on to serve in World War Two in the North African campaign.

Falklands, Entertaining The Troops

During the Falklands War in 1982 Harry went out to the Falklands and entertained the troops. Foillowing that visit, his regiment promoted him to the rank of “Sergeant” a mere 37 years after he left the army.

Early Times In His Career

In those early days, and I am sure it still occurs today, if a comic does not make it after a said number of minutes, they struggle to keep track on their career and they lose bookings for their gigs. When appearing as an entertainer at the famous Windmill Theatre, in London, Harry would have his special reserve to save him if he bombed and that was his astonishing musical talent. With Windmill in particular he had his signiture Funny story all about ”how people shave.”

From that he was able to develop a regional touring career and he got his first break into radio and he starred in the welsh comedy series, Welsh Rarebit, next was Variety Banbox and a long standing part in Educating Archie. It was at the Windmill, where Harry met Michael Bentine, who was to form one of the gang of four, which became known as the Goons.

Other credits:

Singles

On with the Motley, 1955

If I Ruled The World, 1963

Bless This House, 1960

This Is My Song, 1967

Albums:

Sacred Songs 1962

The notion of a “Goon Show” began with their first radio show ”Crazy People” produced by Peter Ross, from that success was born the Goon show on the 28th May 1951 and it ran for nine years until 1960. Sir Harry’s role was that of Neddie Seagoon and the shows central point and strength was to gather a group of people together and engage them with crazy story lines.

From the Goon show which was followed and loved by millions, Harry could no longer be viewed as a “one trap pony” and had became dual purepose, meaning he could turn his skills to comedy or singing whenver he wished.

Film Credits

Harry also starred in a number of films including in 1958, Storm, alonside Sir Richard Attenborough and Sybil Thorndyke, Secombe was scripted in the film from the ouset in scene one.

Five year later he began the musical section of his career, that involved in 1963, Pickwick & Pickwick Papers. His beautiful song, “If I Ruled the World” reached no 18 in the pop charts and he continued to use the song for his signature tune. At this moment and on tour Harry won a “Tony” award for the best actor in a musical.

Other musical followed in:

1967 The Magnificent Seven deadly sins.

Oliver in which he played the superb Mr. Bumble, who when “Oliver” asks for me, Mr Bumble replies More Boy. I always love that bit in Oliver.

Television

Harry made his debut on Xmas Day 1968 and his television shows ran for 30 episodes, guests on his show included co-star in the Goons Spike Milligen, Ronnie Barker and Arthir Lowe from the Dad’s Army set.

Additional Accolades

This Is Your Life Honous twice, the first in 1958.

Sir Harry received a CBE and a OBE during his extensive career.

1980’s onwards

Sir Harry’s ill health began in 1980 when he was diagnosed with Peritonitis, in 1997 he had his first stroke, from which he found it hard to return to full health, sadly he suffered another stroke in 1999, which gave him no option but to stop working.

In addition to suffering from diabeties, he was also diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, something he helped to promote, by allowing television cameras to follow him whereever he went, and raising awareness of this awful disease, rather like how Bob Monkhouse did, but he relased the video after his death.

Charitable Work

250,000 raised for Phiysically and mentally handicapped people in 1967

Plus much more charitable work.

Overview

It is clear that Sir Harry had a marriage that was very loving and that his children were able to lead quite normal lives and that despite his busy schedule he always made time for them and did not exclude them form the laughter and fun that he provided for his public. All the more sad that Sir Harry had to fight for better health in his last years, but always thinking of others. With his charity work and the eagerness to get well again to work. It has been a pleasure compiling this tribute, because for me he was someone you could identify with, people appeared to be special to him and everyone was treated with respect. He undestood what people wanted and delivered it by the bucket load.

Peronally I will always have happy memories of that wonderful voice of his, for the Highway programmes, which he made his own, because the people he was interviewing mattered, they were the story not him. I used to delight when he would tour our beautiful land that is Great Britain and promote us and wonder why so few presenters did the same. Today there are many presenters doing similar jobs promoting the UK. Some are excellent presenters, some are not so good, none are brilliant, as Harry was..

Thank you to Sir Harry and Sir Trevor McDonald for sending signed autographs for my mother’s 80th birthday in 1992, it made her day, another reason Harry was popular with all ages, he was on of us and the celebrity did not turn his head. Thank you so much and to all of you out there who enjoyed him, remember those past times, they were magical.

The Guardian said of Sir Harry

That he was a comedy genius, a genius for slapstick buffoonery, but that didn’t stop him having a classical tenor voice, that sometimes moved people to tears and that he was a tireless charity worker whose friends included Sir john Major & Sir Harold Wilson.

Not all charities are what they claim to be.

A lot of people like to give. It seems it is ingrained in people. It is a great quality to have. But, unfortunately, there are some groups take advantage of the public giving nature. Sometimes people will call people to solicit money for a so called charity you probably never heard about. The real problem is when people don’t have a lot of money, but have big hearts. They may agree 20 dollars to a charity, the 20 dollars they needed for the rent to be on time, and the money goes to con artists.

Do your homework before you give to charity, Websites such as www.guidestar.org and www.charitynavigator.org Here you will find reliable information on thousands of charities. You can also go to the charity site of the Better Business Bureau site called, www.give.org picture credit www.idsy.com

Go to the website of the charity you want to help. Try to find an address, be suspicious if it is a P.O. Box. Then find their phone number and call and get every question you have about the charity you have. Then ask for them to mail you information on their charity. If they won’t mail you information or hedge your questions, it is time to find a new charity.

www.clipartof.com

Be aware that not every penny you donate will save the animals or fight poverty. Money is divided into three parts: fund raising, money administrative costs and the cause the charity supports.

To make sure you like how much money is used for each, call the charity and ask for their most reason 990 tax forms and that will tell you how the money is used, if they give you grief find another charity.

For the charity, 75% should be used for the cause and the other 25% split among the other two.

World Poverty

day of hunger or hunger-related causes, according to the United Nations. This is one person every three and a half seconds, as you can see on this display. Unfortunately, it is children who die most often.
Yet there is plenty of food in the world for everyone. The problem is that hungry people are trapped in severe poverty. They lack the money to buy enough food to nourish themselves. Being constantly malnourished, they become weaker and often sick. This makes them increasingly less able to work, which then makes them even poorer and hungrier. This downward spiral often continues until death for them and their families.
There are effective programs to break this spiral. For adults, there are “food for work” programs where the adults are paid with food to build schools, dig wells, make roads, and so on. This both nourishes them and builds infrastructure to end the poverty. For children, there are “food for education” programs where the children are provided with food when they attend school. Their education will help them to escape from hunger and global poverty.
we can stop this by charity.
