The USS Monitor was a new breed of warship, when in 1860 the British navy unveiled their new iron clad ship HMS Warrior, it sparked a revolution in ship design. The Monitor in early 1862 had dueled at sea with the CSS Virginia in what was at that time one of the most famous naval battles featuring an American ship, the first time two ironclad warships had faced each other in a naval engagement.

Charleston, South Carolina, experienced the most powerful earthquake ever to strike the east coast of the United States. Because of the epicenter’s closeness to the city, damage was extensive in and around Charleston and the quake was felt in places all the way from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.
