A US Marine who had only just returned from active service in Vietnam was reported as missing by his wife in January 1969. Tim Mckown’s 22 year old wife Cara, had no explanation when asked by the law enforcement authorities as to why he may have disappeared from their home in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Although New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, by 1700 the regions had evolved into two distinct societies. Why did this difference in development occur?
