Why People Procrastinate With Their Christmas Shopping

We tend to live in a society who would rather put things off than really get things done as soon as possible to get it done. Even if you do shop at that horrific shopping day known as Black Friday, risking life and limb, at least that is with a month to really kick back. Yet, for some reason people don’t decided to just throw everything behind that day or earlier, throughout the year, getting a few things at the time, deciding to wait into about midway into December to really think about shopping.

The reasons for this gross level of procrastination are many. Let us discuss a few.

People don’t have enough money until rather late in the game.

Reasons of this can be many, one reason is naturally of the shaky economic climate we live in and thus a low budget Christmas is going to be a necessity. Even a low budget Christmas does require a little bit of money. And then there is the grossly poor saving skills and planning that most people have. Something mentally clicks right in November and they need to scramble to get funds together to go Christmas shopping. Which is a rather stressful reason and the holiday season can be potentially stressful enough. Start saving for Christmas as soon as possible, even if you have to start saving on December 26th. Just a little bit at a time.

Waiting for the old holiday bonus at your workplace

The old holiday bonus that might or not be here this year, despite you receiving every other year previously. The holiday bonus at the workplace would be the absolutely easiest thing for a company to cut, well right up there with cutting employees that is. Don’t assume that you’re going to get anything unless it is in your pocket. With many businesses struggling to keep their head above the water, it won’t be a jolly holiday if you rely on the workplace to give out Christmas bonuses.

Hectic Schedules

A lot of people have schedules that defies all conventional wisdom and potentially sanity in this day and age, so fitting in Christmas shopping is going to be tricky. Thankfully the Internet and mail orders are going to relieve some of that stress, but there may be some security concerns unless it is a trusted website and you need to allow plenty of time for orders, in case of items being back ordered. And if you order a lot of items, shipping and handling could be a bit of a steep price. Still people being unable to find much time until December 2X or so because of their schedules is not out of the realm of possibilities but some people are rather creative, so you’d be surprised.

Lazy People being Lazy

Then again there are just people who decide to put things off, until they realize ,”oh crap, Christmas Eve”. They have the time, they have the money, driving conditions are good, but they just delay, thinking that they’re going to do it tomorrow. Yet isn’t today, yesterday’s tomorrow? This would be procrastination at its most base values.

Christmas is coming, hopefully you have your shopping done or are just wrapping up.

When was I there? Sunday, December 11th from a little before 11 a.m. until about 1:30 p.m.

What I liked about this business: This was my first trip to this business in about 6 years and I have to admit I was pretty impressed with the selection of stores. I think some of them might have just been there for the holidays, but there was everything from a Toys R Us outlet store to a Harry and David’s and quite a few clothing stores; both for adults (mostly women) and kids.

In fact, even though most of my Christmas shopping was done long before my wife and I went there, I still ended up with quite a few bags in my car; just because I was finding things (especially at the Corningware Corelle Revere store) I just cannot find in my own hometown.

Another thing I liked about this mall was how the parking lot was located in the middle with the stores wrapping around it (kind of like a horseshoe). This meant we could just park our car, start at one end, work our way around and end up at our car again. The only time we had to drive was when we went to the other section.

One thing that really surprised me too was how friendly the employees were at pretty much every store. I’ve been to plenty of malls and, with most, you’re lucky to get decent service in one or two stores. I did not find one unfriendly employee; despite them being extra busy because of the holiday rush.

What I didn’t like about this business: I was very disappointed by the lack of restaurants right by the mall. There were plenty of restaurants on the other side of the street or a short distance away. But, the only one that was right next to the mall (meaning we didn’t need to leave the mall to get something to eat) was Arby’s. There was also an Espresso shop. But, neither of us was very interested in that.

Final Opinion: If you are looking for a decent place to spend the day shopping, I recommend checking out this mall. I only wish my wife and I had more time to spend there when we went.

If not then you are probably enduring the crowded shops filled with zombies all trying desperately to find presents for people they hardly ever see all year with melting credit cards, migraines and mind boggling levels of stress. Sounds like fun doesn’t it?

Yesterday I did quite a bit of my Christmas shopping. It took 15 leisurely minutes; I didn’t even have to move from my seat (nor did I have to brush my hair, change my clothes or stress about finding a parking spot). At the touch of a key I’d spent $400.

At the time I felt rather pleased with myself. After doing a little bit of research I knew I’d scored myself a couple of decent bargains – and all I had to do now was wait for their arrival in the gleaming, white van that would pull up outside the house in a few days time.

But am I missing something?

Sure, I didn’t get to go in and out of a dozen different shops all selling identical items to compare prices. Nor did I have to smile sweetly at the sales people who are throwing themselves on prospective customers this time of year all seeking Christmas bonuses. And I didn’t even need to pause for a steaming cappuccino from that cute little café in the corner of the shopping center or have a chat with an old friend. Not one sales person asked me how I was and I didn’t get to wish anyone a ‘Happy Christmas’.

I’m beginning to think I completely missed the point.

Yes I know Christmas can be a stressful time of the year but isn’t that what makes it all the better when it gets here? When all the rushing around is done, all the presents are wrapped and sitting under the tree, the cupboard is filled with food we wouldn’t even consider the rest of the year and we can sit and wait for the magic to happen.

But even if we can’t afford to do any of these things we can hopefully be with loved ones for this special time of year.

Is there any point to this article I ask myself? Probably not! But I do know that the whole point of Christmas is to come together with loved ones and remember how lucky we are for all the things we do have by showing a little more kindness to others.

So, when you find yourself amongst a crowd of zombies – give them the gift of a smile and you just might bring them back to life.

• Don’t buy everything in one place. It may take more time, but by shopping around at different stores, local stores, and second hand stores, you will find item’s on your list for cheaper! Local stores tend to sell things cheaper, and big stores tend to have tons of sales and bundle deals. Don’t be afraid to hold on a good offer to check if the shop next door has it for less. Remember, even a couple pennies/pence saved adds up.
• Not everyone needs a new TV. Slightly pricier gifts are fine for close family and really good friends, but extended family, other friends and acquaintances don’t need a huge gift. Sometimes a card with a personalized message is enough to show you care. 
• Do not shun gift cards. Some people think gift cards are a bad gift and doesn’t show a lot of thought, but I think it is the best gift to get! The cards are usually very pretty in themselves, and you get to get exactly what you want. This can avoid a lot of disappointment, and you can make it into a fun afternoon of shopping with the family after Christmas. Just be sure to get them a card for a store they will enjoy.
•  Plan a Holiday budget. I start saving as soon as Christmas is over for the next year, and get the kids to write a list as early as August. This way it gives me time to sit down and go through and make a list of gift’s to look out for. I always put some money aside for each person in case something comes up just before Christmas like a new video game. Buying the gift’s slowly through months is a lot easier on the wallet, and you can set a spending limit for each person you are buying for.
•  Start saving early and put the credit card away! If you plan how much you will spend on each person and tuck a little extra away earlier on in the year, there should be no reason to take out that credit card! No matter how tempted I get, I try never to touch that card. A letter telling you how much money you owe on your credit card is NOT a good Christmas gift to yourself.
• Homemade is NOT overrated. In fact, it puts a lot more care, time and thought than any gift you can go out and pick up in five minutes. There are a ton of creative idea’s on-line and endless ways to personalize the gift for the person you plan on giving it to. Mixes in jars (dry cake mix, hot chocolate mix, etc) are wonderful, and if you have a talent in sewing, art, baking, writing, or anything else you can think of, you can turn your idea’s into the perfect gift.
• Enjoy. Plan out Christmas dinners and family visits before hand and take every moment you are allowed to rest and relax. After all, this is a holiday! Get the family down together and play some games or watch a film. The quality time with friends and family is always my favorite part of Christmas. Don’t let stress and money get in the way of enjoying it.

A perfect gift for almost all occasions. Nothing says I love you more than a sweet little treat wrapped up with a neat little bow. Remember folks presentation is the icing on the cake. Short on cash? Fear not if you don’t have the dough for Godiva or Laura Secord; a good old fashion fruit or cheese cake will do just the trick. A perfect idea for parties or Christmas dinners.

Wine

Nothings says class like a Chardonnay, Cabernet or good old champagne. Looking for something with a twist? Try an Argentina Red with a green ribbon. Perfect for Christmas dinner with the “inlaws” or for a Winter date.

Scarf

A very simple and affordable gift. Also very practical for the remaining months of winter and the early months of spring. Be wary of tacky Christmas themed scarves though. All in all a gift that’s booming in popularity this Christmas.

So get shopping!

Christmas dates (not the sweet and sticky kind)

Beat the Christmas rush and the elbow digs in the post office and make sure you get your Xmas parcels signed, sealed and delivered in time for Christmas day. This means:

• Getting your standard parcels posted by Wednesday 14th December
• Your second class and recorded signed items in by Saturday 17th December
• Your first class recorded signed for items in by Tuesday 20th December

Avoid having a nightmare before Christmas by being organised and using the special delivery service, which offers delivery before Christmas if you post your items by:

• Thursday 22nd December, or
• Friday 23rd December with a Saturday guarantee

Christmas overseas

For those of you with family or friends on further shores then keep in mind that international delivery in time for Christmas has a tighter schedule! (The reindeer have to travel further, you see):

• Airmail services to South & Central America, Caribbean, Africa, Middle East, Asia, Far East (including Japan), Australia and New Zealand must be made by Monday 5th December
• Get your parcels in by Friday 9th December  for Eastern Europe, USA and Canada
• Get your parcels in by Monday 12th December for Western Europe

The following pointers will be listed in order to help you get the most of your Christmas shopping without going over budget:

1. Write a list of each person you will be buying for. Then, assign a number next to each name. This number is going to be your spending cap on the person. This will help you sort out your budget before you have already blown it in the store.
2. Add up the amounts beside each name. That total number is all the cash you will bring with you. No credit cards! Only money that you have tangibly, that you have already earned.
3. Beside everyone’s name and number’s, write down some gift ideas that stay within your budget you have set for that person. Always list at least two ideas in case the original idea is no longer in stock, or is over your budget. you will be easily saved by the next option on your list.
4. Bring this list to the store. Do not leave it at home.
5. Follow the list when you get to the store. Do not go over your budget because you see a “great deal” or “it was wrapped in shiny paper”. Stick with the ideas you had, and the budget you created.
6. Bring your gifts home. Enjoy wrapping them while listening to Christmas music. I bet you didn’t get to enjoy the carols playing in the store. Reward yourself with a pat on the back and a great cup of hot chocolate.
