We thought we knew everything about the lives of our beloved celebrities.  Paparazzi makes sure that not a day goes by where they don’t stalk every single move of these famous Americans.  However, a few little details might never be revealed.  Some for personal reasons, others for lack of interest.  Below is list of famous U.S. celebrities who served in the United States military.  Army, Navy, Air Force and even the tough Marine Corps. You will be shocked by some of the names, at least I was.

Bill Cosby, United States Navy – To think of the famous comedian as a salior is hard enough, let alone to think that he was actually a Navy Corpsman.  They are regarded as the toughest doctors in the world.  Navy Corpsmen train and live along side Marines.  Their main duty is to provide Marines with medical assistance in battle, due to the fact that the Marine Corps itself is a fighting force and lacks a medical department.  He worked first hand with many Korean War veterans and played an important role in their recovery.

Drew Carey, United States Marine Corps – Another very famous character.  He is the talk show host of the very famous television show “The Price is Right”.  Carey served in the Marine Corps Reserves from 1980-1986.  Not much is known about his MOS (Military Occupational Specialty).  However he left the Marine Corps with the rank of Corporal.

Clint Eastwood, United States Army – It makes perfect sense.  A man with the personality of Eastwood had to have served in the military.  Even though personally I would have pictured more as a Marine.  He was drafted in the Army during the Korean War but never served in the front lines.  After finishing basic training, Eastwood acquired a job as a swimming instructor.

Morgan Freeman, United States Air Force – The man with the most recognizable voice in Hollywood.  Freeman joined the Air Force in 1955 at the age of 18, fresh out of high school with the intention of becoming a fighter pilot.  However, he ended up working as a mechanic for the next five years until his contract was up.  Freeman returned to Los Angeles and enrolled in a community college to study acting.  Good desicion if you ask me.

Hugh Hefner, United States Army – The last person on earth anyone would expect to have served in the military.  For those of you who don’t know who Hefner is, he is the founder and owner of Playboy.  Even more shocking is that he served in an infantry unit during WWII.

Ice-T, United States Army – The famous rapper from California was not only enlisted in the Army, but he was also an Army Ranger.  Rangers are considered to be the best light infantry the world.  They are the only official commando unit of the United States military.

Mr. T, United States Army – We all know the man who made the mohawk famous.  Who would have ever thought that Mr. T was once upon a time an American soldier?

Chuck Norris, United States Air Force – Sort of dissapointing in a way.  The average fan would have expected Norris to have served in the Marine Corps or in a special forces unit of the Army.  His action movies have made him one of the most loved American actors of the 90’s.

Elvis Presley, United States Army – This list just gets more shocking with every name doesn’t it?  Elvis Presley, the world famous musician.  The artist, the singe, the legend, the…soldier?  Yeah not only he was a soldier but he served for two years in of the Army’s finest Armored Tank Divisions.

Shaggy, United States Marine Corps – It’s weird to think that someone like Shaggy could have served in the military, especially the Marine Corps.  For those of you who don’t know him Shaggy is a relatively famous musician mostly known for his songs “It wasn’t me” and “Angel”.

9  Richard Dean Anderson, AKA MacGyver!  He made his mullet with a fork, a razor blade and a spool of string.  Who needs a barber when you have MacGyver?

8  John Stamos, better known as… Uncle Jesse.  Classic mullet.

7  Chuck Norris… because he’s Chuck Norris and he can do whatever the hell he wants to do.

6  Kanye West, really?  I couldn’t let the Top 10 Celebrity Mullets list go without the African American contribution to mullets all over the world.  I was going to go with Lionel Richie for this one, but I think we needed someone a little more… modern.

5  Mel Gibson.  Remember the Lethal Weapon days?  I had to go into this one carefully lest he threaten to bury me in his rose garden.

4  Jerry Seinfeld.  I think he might have trimmed it down for the 21st century.  Not sure.

3  After much deliberation, number 3 goes to George Clooney.  Not so much of a heartthrob then, huh?

2  You’re in luck ladies.  Number two goes to Brad Pitt.  I thought it wise to give you the before and after of a rather effeminate Pitt compared to a little more modern Pitt.

1  The all-time top celebrity mullet goes to none other than Dog the Bounty Hunter!  This was actually an easy decision.  His celebrity status pales in comparison to those dominating the rest of this list, but Dog has a mullet on crack, he wears it to this very day and he wears it with pride.

Damn!  Now that’s a mullet!

Thai Ngoc is a Vietnamese man who has claimed he has been awake for 33 years after having a bout of fever in 1973. He is 68 years old and lives in Trung Ha Village, Que Son District of Quang Nam Province. There have been investigations performed on him by a popular Vietnamese news organization who have discovered he has no apparent side effects from this…and in fact was able to carry two 50KG bags  down a 4KM Road!

Liew Thow Lin is a resident of Malaysia and is often named the Magnetic Man as he has the odd ability to literally stick metal objects to his body. It is recorded that he can lift up metal objects weighing up to 2KG each, in fact he even pulled a car using this ability! And scientists are still amazed on how he can do this!

3. The man who has not eaten for 70 years

Prahlad Jani is a Indian yogi who is 82 years old. He has made claims he has not eaten anything in 70 years, this claim was tested when doctors put him in an observation for 2 weeks where he did not eat or drink anything…and guess what…he was perfectly healthy!

4. The dude who can eat anything!

Michel Lotito was a french man who was popular for eating indigestible objects such as metal, glass, rubber and much more!

He has eaten things like bikes, televisions and even Airplanes…and he did not seem to suffer any ill effects! The first time he began to eat these strange objects were when he was around 9 years old.

5. The boy who can see using his hearing/sonar

We’ve all heard of bats using eco-location to see through caves and things like that, for those of you that do not know eco-location is a system used by many cetaceans to navigate, orient themselves and search for food. It is accomplished by sending out sounds and interpreting the echoes produced. But this boy along with a few other people are able to do this too!

Harrison was born in the UK from part-Irish ancestry. He had humble, working class beginnings, but became the almost legendary lead guitarist in ‘The Beatles.’ Later in his music career, he embraced Hinduism, a belief which led him to organise a charity concert for Bangladesh in 1971. He is listed in Rolling Stone Magazine as number twenty one of “The Hundred Best Guitarists of All Time.” He also had a very successful career as a solo artist and as a film and record producer. Harrison wore his big, bushy moustache for quite a number of years during his musical career, and if you ever got confused with which Beatle was which, this iconic piece of facial hair always served to distinguish him from the rest of the band.

Freddy Mercury

As the composer of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Freddy Mercury – born Farrokh Bulsara – was one of the most well-known musicians of his time. He was based in the UK but was of Parsis origin, born in East Africa (Zanzibar). He was schooled in India, but shortly after returning to his home country, his family fled to London when he was only seventeen years old, to escape the revolution. He had a clear, four-octave voice range and sensationally ate up the stage when it came to live performances and television (remember the ‘I Want to Break Free’ video?). He died aged forty-five of AIDS related complications in November of 1991. Freddy Mercury wore his moustache during most of his years as a performer. It started big, got smaller, and increased in size again. He was definitely a musician that could not hide in any disguise whatsoever. His moustache was noticeable regardless of anything else he wore – or didn’t wear.

Salvador Dalí

Born in 1904, Dali had such a unique moustache that the style was named after him. It was long and pointy, curving upwards, with areas past the corner of the mouth shaved.

Salvador Dali was a surrealist painter from Catalan. He was mainly known for his talent in painting, but he was a dab hand at film, sculpture and photography as well. His style was eccentric and flamboyant, and he often attracted attention to himself by exhibiting bizarre behaviour. This sort of eccentricity started when he was at art school, from which he was expelled just before his final exams for stating that none of the instructors were cleaver or talented enough to examine him. He later became heavily involved in controversial politics and eventually was banned from the surrealist society. I blame the moustache.

Robert Mugabe

Robert Gabriel Mugabe was born in 1924 and has controversially led Zimbabwe for twenty-eight years. He first qualified as a teacher, but has since acquired six degrees – two of them law degrees.

Mugabe has always sported a toothbrush moustache, the same type as Hitler’s (see part part one). Now they’ve spoilt that style for anyone else who fancied himself a toothbrush-moustache kind of man.

Robert Gabriel Mugabe is the current President of Zimbabwe, an office he’s held on to despite the world’s view of him. This position in the beginning, earned him respect and reverence from his countrymen and several Western nations  alike, but he has since become one of the most disliked African Presidents in history. Added to his questionable politics, he also started one of the world’s biggest hyperinflation by printing hundreds of trillions of Zimbabwean dollars.

Thomas Selleck

Tom Selleck was born in 1945 in Detroit, Michigan. When he was a teenager, he twice appeared in The Dating Game – losing both times. He later became an actor and has also become a successful screenwriter and film producer.  Magnum P.I was his most famous starring role to date, but it could’ve been much different. He was cast as Indiana Jones in The Raiders of the Lost Ark, but when Magnum’s producers refused to release him from his contract, the role went to Harrison Ford instead.

After Selleck decided to do the honourable thing  and stick with Universal Studios, filming was delayed for a period of six months, which meant that he would’ve been able to complete filming as Indiana after all. What a bummer this must have been for him, considering the film series’ continual success.

With his winning smile, and jet black, immaculate moustache, Tom Selleck was noticeable anywhere he went.  The only drawback was that he was sometimes mistaken for Burt Reynolds, another moustached heart-throb. One important thing to note about Selleck, is that the ‘Friends’ (the sitcom in which he played Monica’s sweetheart) producers had to stop having live audiences, because they couldn’t control them when he was appearing. What a star.

Charles Bronson

Bronson was the eleventh of fifteen children, born to a poverty-stricken Lithuanian family living in Pennsylvania.  When Bronson was ten, his father died, which meant that he had to work in the coal mines for a reportedly one dollar per ton.  When he was twenty-two, he joined the U.S Army Air Forces and served as an Aircraft gunner in WWll. He then changed his name from Buchinsky to Bronson, and after many baby steps in the filming industry, Bronson made his mark and got himself noticed in ‘The Magnificent Seven.’ He is now known for a number of action-hero-type films including ‘The Dirty Dozen.’ His ‘Death Wish’ series was extremely popular and ran for almost twenty years. Bronson died aged eighty-one in 2003, from pneumonia. He was also suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Chuck Norris

Chuck Norris was born, Carlos Ray Norris, on March 10, 1940, in Oklahoma. He was from a working class family, and was from Irish/Cherokee decent. When he was eighteen, he joined the National Air Force as an Air Policeman, and earned himself the name, Chuck.  He was based in South Korea, which is where he picked up an interest in Tang Soo Du. When he returned to the U.S, he opened a chain of Karate schools for kids, and later became internationally known for his masterful roundhouse kick. His acting career kicked off successfully and he became world-famous in his role as Cordell Walker in ‘Walker, Texas Ranger.’ He’s also known for a number of tough-guy film roles. His moustache has evolved through the years. At one time he had just a moustache, but then graduated to a full beard, then back to just a moustache again.

All these men made an impact creatively, politically, or socially. I am tempted to think that if it wasn’t for the moustaches, they would be ordinary looking men who would not be so readily identifiable. What do you think?
