The oppressed people give themselves secret names, strong and empowering names, and even fake names for protection. The act of naming becomes a means of control for the colonizers and a means of strength and defiance for the colonizers. All attempts at ensuring the silencing of a race failed in the end. They would be heard. Their names would be remembered. They would break the silence and the future would be theirs.
