A brief description of the cultural implications of Celluloid Indians Native Americans. Originally a Seminar Ticket, this article will prove helpful for anyone studying Native Americans and tribal communities. It also includes valid opinions on the oppression of this major ethnic group.

The text Celluloid Indians Native Americans And Film by Jacquelyn Kilpatrick reflects how the Native Americans are depicted throughout modern American Cinema. I found this book to be quite interesting, however it restated a lot of what i already was aware of. I was already aware of Hollywoods’ bias towards most ethnic groups, after all, the media favors stereotypes. I was also aware of many western films that depicted Indians as savage heathens that were to be defeated, if they were not aiding the white man in expeditions, or seducing them as temptress icons. Although the premise of Hollywood is to entertain, therefore using stereotypical information was, and still is, to this industries benefit. It is sad that the entertainment of America had to be at the disgrace of Native Americans.

The book opens with an analysis of the work of James Fenimore Cooper, who wove idea of the “noble savage” into his fiction. Yet Montgomery Bird was an other that perfected the demonization of Natives during the 19th century, with his character Nathan Slaughter. Slaughter was described as a “one man genocide”. He representing a growing Nationalization movement that was brewing in American culture during that time. In my opinion, Slaughter was the beginning of a fad of ‘American Hero Icons’ that were seen as protagonists even though they kill innocent people, like Native Americans in slaughters case. Yet there are so many of these icons it is simply ridiculous; Captain America, for example was originally used as U.S propaganda during WWII. He was seen as a violent German/Japanese killing machine, yet was greatly glorified by the American people, and is still a cartoon today.

This book refreshed my memory of how much government is truly tied to media.

Questions: What were the real reasons that the government would favor anti-indian media?

Why are all of these Native stereotypes still embraced today, with little objection from the majority?

The World today via the United Nations calendar marks her annual world day of peace every 21st day of September. This was first implemented in 1982 and at the later years September 21st was chosen to be the fixed day for the celebration.

Charity they say begins at home and thus peace should be practiced right away from amongst the family members. Partners should learn to tolerate each other, the children should adopt the same and so is it to neighbours around the yards. Communities should imbibe peace and relate cordially with their neighbouring community and likewise nations with their neighbours.

World day of peace is indeed a wakeup call against terrorism in the whole world. Natural disasters like earthquakes, typhoons, Chinook and more are part of these terrorism but man-made terrorist acts are intentional and devilish and thus needed urgent measures to solving them. It is a time for the nations of the world to dig deep into the problems the nations of the world have passed through in the recent years and plan towards engineering a perfect means to ensuring peace and unity amongst other nations.

With the recent wave of terrorism going on virtually in every parts of the world, there is urgent need to embrace peace and seek reconciliation where deemed. With the celebration of World peace day, the international bodies should henceforth strengthen their efforts and take the lead to seeking for reconciliation and rehabilitation in the case of those nations or communities who have in the recent past suffered one act of terrorism or the other. It is very crucial therefore to come down very low to correlating with these communities and embracing them and finding lasting solutions to their problems.

The flames of wars going on in the Middle-East, Northern Africa and in West Africa are clear examples of cruelty against humanity and thus needed urgent reconciliation and absolute solutions to their sorrows. A clarion call then is required and strong message and campaigned should be promoted around the world to fight the scourge of terrorism in the world. Families, individuals, firms, communities, nations of the world and of course the international communities should all rise up to this challenge. Observing the world peace day, a drastic improvement in the cordial relationship among people would surely ensue hence peace is preached and practiced all round the world.

Have you heard of the new communities being formed all around the country?

If you haven’t been keeping up with what’s going on around the world, and the total economic deterioration, than your probably in a coma. What I’ve been finding is a new trend happening right here in our own backyard. Folks, from all walks of life, are forming groups. I’m going to call them, pocket communities. Each group seems to have a head person, the one who generally is in charge of the entire community plan. I say plan because these communities are not going to actually go in effect unless totally necessary. What I mean by necessary is if suddenly we, the United States of America, find ourselves in a situation of self reliance. Wherein, we do not have any government functions; no emergency help; no hospitals; no stores open; and worse case scenario; no electric grids operating. What fascinates me is that these pocket communities are forming all across the entire country. The head, or top figure, is the most organized, detailed individual in the entire group. He, or she, knows a little bit about, just about, everything under the sun – as far as survival goes. And what this head figure does is organize locations; supplies; functions; time charts; and jobs. Every member of these pocket communities, brings something different to the, shall we call them, tribe. One member may be a herbal specialist; one may be a solar expert; one may know how to trap, hunt and prepare any animal in their region; another is an excellent farmer. You get my drift. And with each family within the pocket community, they also have assignments. Assignments such as being responsible for certain items. These items can range from frozen meats to batteries, to fishing rods and tents. Each family has a list of items they are responsible for collecting and having prepared, ahead of time. So that when, and if, they need to leave in a hurry the items are already prepared, packed and ready to simply load into the vehicles. Not only is each family unit given a list but they are also responsible for the personal list of each of their own family members. Each person has a list that needs to be taken care of individually. So once this unit has the master list from the head organizer plus their own individual packed lists, they are ready to load it all up – always having a full tank of gas for the ready – and head for the secret destination. I use the word secret because each pocket community is forbidden to share these locations with any outsiders. The only guarantee of success is seclusion. Seclusion from the chaos which may very well ensue. For these pocket communities to work, you prepare for the members that have been invited, certainly if others begin to just start showing up, you will have complete failure. Not enough supplies, etc. Some of these pocket communities feel its every American citizens responsibility to be prepared ahead of time. It’s your patriotic duty to be an example to the rest of the world by expecting the best while preparing for the worse. If you chose to bury your head in the sand, and God forbid, something does happen, what will you do? Search out others who have taken the great time, effort and expense to prepare and expect to simply be welcomed inside? When, as already stated, that would risk the survival of the entire pocket group. I don’t foresee any of these groups making such an exception. Do you remember the story of the two squirrels when you were a child? I’m not going to use exact quotes, but will share what I took from it then, and continue to remember today – Two squirrels were enjoying the warm summer air and playing in the beautiful grass. One squirrel stopped playing and left the other to go and collect nuts. The one who continued to play didn’t understand why he would leave such a beautiful day to work. After all, soon enough they would be hiding from the frigid cold. So he continued to play. While the other continued to store up nuts. The summer came and went. Fall came and went. And winter was upon them. The squirrel who took the time to work hard during the days of warmth had plenty to eat. He didn’t have to even leave his little home in search of food. But the one who wanted to play, and not prepare, was hungry and had to spend many long, cold hours in search of little bits of food. Okay, I’ve certainly changed the story but I’m giving you my mind’s version of it, folks. My point is these pocket communities are trying to teach us the same thing. Prepare while the stores are full of food. Prepare while you have access to the world wide web and educate yourself on the many uses of herbs. Prepare yourself by reading, and printing, as much material you can that may help you. Stock pile items. You don’t need to rush out and spend $2,000 in one day to do it. Most folks can’t afford such a luxury. But if you get little by little, or shall I say, nut by nut, before you know it – you’ve got enough to help your family survive until the storm passes. With our utter dependence upon modern technology, many in this current generation have no idea how to make it without such items as cell phones, ipods, and whatever other gadgets they play with. These pocket communities have the mentality of the American pioneers. They survived without all the luxuries that we have today – and if need be, pocket communities, or American pioneers of today, will also survive. Living in these communities won’t be easy. It takes a lot of hands and it’s hard work. Hard work ensuring there is enough fire wood to keep warm. Enough fire wood to prepare your food. Hard work to take care of gardens they will need to sustain themselves. Hard work tending any animals they will have. And you will certainly need to have some sort of relaxation after all this hard work. Personally, I love books. I am a bookworm. I have many hobbies. I’ve never been one to rely upon the TV to entertain me or my children. I’ve always felt there were much better things to do. Picking the right people for these pocket communities is crucial. If you have one lazy person, who is not willing to pull their weight, imagine the downward spiral they can create. You need to have members that understand the importance of their assignments. And if one unit refuses to participate, that unit will be eliminated out of the community. Simply as that. It’s just too risky to have them onboard. It needs to be a working community. A cooperative measure. Anything less would be dangerous. After reading about so many of these communities and what they entail, right down to the lists of items each unit is to bring to the table – I sat down and tried to think of my own list of members I would invite to my own pocket community. Then I started reaching out to these certain folks and bouncing it off of them. Trying to get a feel for what they thought of the whole idea. I was very surprised to learn that just about everyone that I approached had the same inclination I did. Everyone had the same thoughts of, “what would you do, just in case” kind of scenario. We all had the same ideas. We all thought, “where would I go with my family to be safe?” So I decided to take it a step further. Try and find the perfect location for this pocket community to exist, should the need ever arise. Find alternative routes in reaching the location – can’t be stuck in a huge traffic jam with everybody and their brother trying to escape. Try to create a master list for the pocket community members. And then create, or suggest, personal lists for each individual. It took long hours of research, reading, copying and printing to get some semblance of organization for such a huge undertaking. But it’s certainly possible. It will take, I think, some time to have these lists actually completely prepared, packed and ready to go at a moment’s notice. I would imagine possibly a year or so. But even then, I’m sure no matter how much you prepare, you will always be able to find something else to add. So what about you? Have you heard any of your friends, family or contacts speaking about these pocket communities being created? If not, maybe you should consider organizing your own. Without water, food, shelter, protection and nobody on the other end of 911, what are you prepared for? How much food and water do you have in your collective homes right now? Do you have enough to take care of your entire family, and pets, for three weeks? What if you need three months worth? What will you do if you can’t get in your car and drive to Wal Mart? What will you do it you can’t call your family doctor to get med’s for yourself or children? Can you survive if temperatures are extreme levels? Many of my friends tell me I’m too prepared at this point. I tell them there’s no such thing. I can stay up all night long and work on the computer searching for herbal remedies, how to build an outdoor oven that you can actually bake breads in, and the best ways to protect yourself against intruders. The point is, I’m doing it. I don’t want something to happen and find myself in a complete panic – not knowing what to do. When you have children, and pets, your not on your own. Your responsible for others. As a mom, well, I’ve always taken care of my children the best way I could – if something happens, who will they look towards? Me. The last thing I want to ever see is absolute fear and panic in their eyes. No, instead, I want to be able to say to them that everything is fine. We’re going to do exactly what we have planned for so long. Everybody will have a job and a mission. And, collectively, we will be able to head for all our locations and wait out the storm. Your not going to be able to dig for a well while your panicking about finding enough water to drink or food to eat. Your not going to be able to build a root cellar if your in a panic either. But if you take the time to educate yourself, prepare your family, and pay close attention to all the many signs around you, then you will be just fine. Don’t take my word for it, folks, research it for yourselves. Then decide if you feel the need to start finding and collecting your nuts now, while everything is available to you; or if you prefer to wait and see if it happens first – and then take your chance that there will be any nuts left to gather after the storm has already begun…

Forgiveness is a very challenging issue because it seems to mean that the offender gets away with his crime scot free. They may have acted deliberately and may not have shown remorse. They may have committed the same offence repeatedly with impunity. In such a scenario, there seems to be no motivation in the injured person to begin the journey of forgiveness towards this person.

Although forgiveness is not easy, it is very necessary for the good of the injured person. People who are hurt and do not forgive often continue to suffer stress and emotional wounds because they are holding on to anger and bitterness.

What forgiveness is not

Forgiveness is often misunderstood. It is a choice to let go of our hurt and resentment but it does not in any way mean:

That we excuse or approve of the offence

that the offence is forgotten or did not matter

that the offence has no consequences

that the injured person or their hurt does not matter

Forgiveness should not just be made an event-it must become a value and lifestyle of a given community that ought to be passed on from one generation to the next through discussions, discipline, and exemplary living. Forgiveness and reconciliation are journeys which few people make but whose destination is freedom, health and peace.

Like Forgiveness, reconcialition must be ingrained in the way of life of a given community for it to be realized among the people. It calls for one of the offended parties to lose their pride for the sake of peace and social wellbeing.

What reconciliation is

Reconciliation is the process that goes beyond forgiveness. It is achieved when people who have been in conflict reach a positive relationship with each other. Reconciliation usually requires an experienced mediator or counsellor who is trusted by both parties in the conflict. This counselor must be wise, emotionally mature, resilient, objective, and never takes sides. He or she should be well respected in the community and has the endurance to remain committed to achieving reconciliation however long the process takes.

A good mediator does not succeed alone

A mediator cannot solve conflicts on his/her own. All those involved in the must decide that reconciliation is the best option fro each other and that it is better than continuing the conflict. Everyone needs to be committed to the process to make it as easy as possible to sit at the same table and live in the same community. Potential future conflicts should be discussed and worked through and the commitment to reconciliation must be demonstrated by appropriate action.

The Offender Must say sorry

Where an offence has been committed, the offender must be sorry and ready to admit that. If they do not want to communicate or are defensive, it means they are not ready for reconciliation. You may seek financial compensation to facilitate reconciliation, however, this does not guarantee a resolution of the conflict as ideas of revenge may resurface.

Like Forgiveness, reconciliation must be ingrained in the way of life of a given community for it to be realized among the people. It calls for one of the offended parties to lose their pride for the sake of peace and social well-being.

Police officers and minority communities haven't seen eye to eye for years. There are many reasons why this is the case. The bigger question is what are we willing to do in order to bridge this very big gap.

It is no secret that the history between minority communities and the police department has been strained for many years. Some would say that there is barely a relationship at all. Minorities make up a large percentage of the jail and prison population with black makes making up 35% of this population. The nation’s jail and prison population reached an astounding record 2.3 million last year. The U.S rate of incarceration is five to eight times that of other highly industrialized countries.

There are many reasons why minorities are targeted and make up such a ridiculous amount of prisoners. One of those reasons being a systematic approach to those that live in poorer communities with less opportunities. The prison industry has been often been looked at as a new form of slavery. It used to be that prisoners could earn a degree in prison but many of these programs are being cut out. Rehabilitation is not the mode of doing things it is keeping criminals off the street, most of them convicted on drug charges. When there are limited options that increase the chances of selling drugs and doing other illegal activities. For decades this has been the problem but there has been no immediate attention to making education affordable and providing poorer families with more options.

Many minorities don’t feel as if the police are there to protect and serve them. Mainly because of the police brutality and racial profiling that goes on in this day and time. There is no cooperation when it comes to murders, robbery and other crimes because the trust is not there. The issues go deep and go back many years as far as slavery, the undermining of the Black Panther party and the drug laws put in place that changed the jail and prison complex. It is very difficult to look at the justice system and not be skeptical about the laws and mindset toward immigration and minority communities. Not only are people leery about police officers but also our government that doesn’t seem to be concerned about the root of the problem.

The rising rates of prisoners in our jails and prisons affect all of us. Not just those families of those incarcerated but everyone in society. It is said to cost us $60 billion per year for federal, state, and local prison systems. This is a scary statistic because it affects our ability to fund programs related to education, health care and child services not to mention many others. Until we as a society can understand that we are in this together and everything affects everybody either directly or indirectly we will continue to see rising cost and over populated jails and prison systems.

What will it take to make people listen? I tried to explain earlier that no one obtains anything for nothing. Now President Obama is bent on covering the something with raising taxes and why is this happening?

According to President Obama it is because it is the American Government’s responsibility, but how is anything that pertains to individuals and individual family’s freedom of choice the government’s responsibility?

People work their entire lives in hopes of obtaining a descent future of leisurely living for themselves only to have the government tell them what they can and can not do? I guess this sits well with some people that can’t be bothered with their family members and is more then willing to shift their responsibility off to someone else, but it doesn’t come without a hefty price tag.

In case everyone has forgotten or developed Attention Deficit Disorder as some say President Obama has let me remind the American Public; Business taxes get raised and the business owners automatically raise the price of products you purchase in the stores and else where. The business owners will not eat this tax height you American citizens will. It has always been this way and shall continue to be so as long as the public has need of purchased products they are unable or unwilling to make themselves.

Raising taxes would not be so bad if the American People had more Industries in America to make more money from, but right now American People are stuck because of the American Government and their unreasonable practices as it is.

We don’t need more Government; we need less Government intrusion into the people’s lives. It’s really hard to understand where many people come from in their thinking. Have people learned nothing from History? Considering the lack of most supposedly educated American’s today I even wonder if American History is even still fluently being taught in American schools; or have the History books been relegated to merely subjects the government wants taught these days too?

Let the American elders choose for themselves what they want to use for their retirement and stop telling everyone how to live. What’s the difference anyway, being ignored by family members or being ignored by understaffed government facilities; it all equals out to the same treatment only one has a devastating cost attached.

What we need are more industries to provide more jobs and less government interference and serious unconstitutional restrictions. I’m sorry, but President Obama every legal able bodied citizen of America has the constitutional right to work and make a living for themselves and their families regardless of education, race, religion, etc., and you are the most unconstitutional person I’ve ever seen in existence. Your laws are outrageous and dangerous to the American Society.

No self respecting American Citizen expects something for nothing and that is exactly what America is getting “nothing for free.” Don’t believe me look at these links and see for yourself. I’m just amazed not one person had stood against this abomination President Obama is handing to everyone. I’m not saying the Republicans are much better and yet we still have this abomination going forth as if everything will be just hunky dory.

The first is the “Tony Katz on Obama’s Budget:”

Tony Katz on Obama’s Budget; http://www.pjtv.com/?cmd=mpg&mpid=346&load=5254

The second is a report by Newsmax: “Gillespie: Obama Has ‘Deficit Attention Disorder,’ Boehner Did His Job: http://us.mg1.mail.yahoo.com/dc/launch?.gx=1&.rand=f5arllbb6318a

This next one actually shows Vice President Joe Biden falling to sleep during President Obama’s speech and this man is suppose to meet daily with the heads of the Democratic and Republican Parties for finalizations of these plans?

http://wildfire.gigya.com/facebook/preview.aspx?fb_sig_api_key=f7667e9ebccf2157d6f15f991a5e3ce9&wid=526197921&p=bHQ9MTMwMjcyNzUzODU3NCZwdD*xMzAyNzI3NTQ3Mzc4JnA9MTI1ODQxMSZkPUFCQ*5ld3NfU*ZQX*xvY2tlX*VtYmVkJm49ZmFjZWJvb2smZz**Jm89YjUzNTI*NzFjNjQ2NGExNDkxMjc1YWM4NDM3N2QxYjkmb2Y9MA%3D%3D&s=1

I can’t help but to question this action considering the last time Obama assigned Biden to do something he turned right around and sent Biden out of the country foregoing anything having to do with this very same issue. Does any of them in the Whitehouse have an individualized thinking process?

As I stated before and I’ll continue stating it until people actually begin listening; “you can’t get something for nothing.” How high of taxes are you willing to pay to give up your rights as a free born American so the government can use you like a robot?

Have you been on a social site lately and had to listen to someone else praising the government for the FREE care some family member is getting? Do you really think anyone is getting anything FREE?

I’m not talking about elder people that have worked all their lives hoping for a tranquil and fun filled ending to their existence, no; these are young people talking about their young boyfriends, girlfriends, children, etc., and many are single mothers. Just who do they think is flipping the payments for all of this FREE care?

The government says it’s Social Security that is eating up the money in government I submit to you it isn’t the Social Security but the broken Welfare System that is eating up the money. I submit to you it is the Foster Care eating up the money.

How many young people in your communities do you know that are young enough to hold down paying jobs? I know America doesn’t have any right? Wrong. As long as we have people we have jobs. It may not pay a lot but it pays. Artists can produce art and people with skills can produce with those skills. So why are so many young people on the Welfare Rolls?

If the American people really use their brains they would realize that accepting more handouts from the government will only hurt the American people even more. Work is what is needed to bail out America. Jobs and making money will bail America out from under the massive debts the greedy Politicians have forced upon American’s.

The Government plays the American people like a fine fiddle; and the people swallow everything shoved down their throats. If you disagree with what I’m saying take a really good look around you in your own neighborhood and see the truth for yourself. There aren’t nearly as many elders as there are young people today.

If you are a single parent then get a room mate to assist with the bills or get a spouse. I’m sick of hearing young people whining about “what if.” The only people that really have that right are the elders. They may not have been perfect but they brought you into this world and your not perfect either.

People complaining about too much “Drama” on social networks have a button that says delete, use it I did. I found I had people on my friends lists that preferred to stay in the dark and not hear the truth so I deleted them from my friend’s lists. That’s all you have to do if you want to stay blissfully ignorant of everything going on around you, but like I said in one of my earlier articles; if you’re not prepared don’t be surprised if you can’t get help if something bad does happen.

I’m not angry at them, in fact I really want to thank them for giving me the true answer to a troubling question. You see, the government makes it sound right and proper, but do the math. Let’s go three generations back., say 80 years per generation…I believe the government states 100. I don’t know about most of you but, my grandparents didn’t live beyond 82 and my parents died even younger.

Most families started young in my grandparent’s day and compared to most she had 3 living children. All 3 I might add are now deceased and none of them were near 80. In both my mother and father’s sides of the families, they were divorced; only the children are now alive. That’s right and does this sound like the majority of families today?

I had 5 children spread out from California to Oklahoma; 3 of which are working ages. The other two will join the work force in five and seven years from now. One child joined the military recently, another works in a department store and my oldest goes to college for her BA and works caring for elderly disabled.

Even if we say each family only had two children their parents would possibly be deceased if their parents worked hard all of their lives leaving how many working age people? Not all would live to be a hundred and certainly not all families had just two children either. So what is all of this talk about all of the money being taken up in Social Security?

Like everything else people that want hand outs for FREE it is a lie; a lie to perpetuate their welfare systems that are broken. There are many such broken systems in America and Welfare is one of the biggest. To perpetuate the welfare system they must first make working an impossibility.

Simple enough; place stupid unrealistic restrictions on working in America then drive all companies out of America to make the general populace feel worthless and defeated. Further that by ordering tests to be taken in bogus ways that no self respecting true scientist would even consider and give those test results as the real and true thing.

The Politicians laugh all the way to the bank while the general population becomes more apathetic to life and what ever is going on around them. Then utilize propaganda by way of using the media to instill fears of even your closest friend and neighbors by retelling one story over and over until it is literally drilled into your brain. Suddenly this act or attitude is everywhere and in everyone. Spy on your neighbor; question little children and keep them until they give you the answer they WANT to hear not what is truth.

Your not getting something for nothing you are selling your soul and destroying everything America stood for. If this wasn’t so destructive to the American Nation it would actually be laughable.

Universities offer many majors. While some of them will get you a good job in the future, others will leave you frustrated.

These days, the notion that we must major in subject we are passionate about has been flying high and low all across the world. Sure it makes sense, but the problem is that reality does not agree to it. In other words, there are many majors which can attract us greatly, but once we graduate they will not let us get a job easily. Which ones are those? The answer to it is below:

1. Philosophy: The first point to be noted is that in most American schools, you need a specific number of units in order to graduate. Unfortunately, this requirement cannot be fulfilled by the philosophy major. So you might need to take either extra classes or simply declare a minor. But this is not all. Once you get you graduate, you will find yourself completely confused because direct jobs for philosophy majors do not exist. Of course, you can become its teacher, but again, for that, you will have to either enter in masters or credential program.

2. Cultural Anthropology: This major’s main concentration is on various communities. The unfortunate point is that they do not involve your local people, but the tribes residing in forests. Do you think any company will want you to make a report on that? No, not really. This basically implies that you are not going to get a job with a degree in cultural anthropology. Yes, you can get a professor’s job. But as you know, to get to that position, you will need a doctorate degree.

3. Music: Most students who take music degree wish to be either in orchestra or become a part of a music group. The ultimate goal is to become famous. But only the lucky ones get to be in that position and not all. A music degree itself does not provide a job easily. But studying it for years can help you a teacher’s position.

4. Astronomy: NASA needs mathematicians and physicists who have PhD. That is why, just having a bachelor’s degree in Astronomy is very much useless. You are simply not going to get a job with it. However, if your passion for the sky flies high you can always enroll in the doctorate program. Yet you have to make sure that the school you choose is reputable. Otherwise, you will not see a nice crispy job coming towards your direction.

5. History: Many say that with a degree in history, you can get a job in the museum. Sure that sounds relieving! But the only problem is that a museum requires only a few employees who have this degree. So after graduation, you basically feel you have been wait listed. But again, the noble task of teaching is always there to save you. Otherwise, you can always look to other fields for help.

Instead of waiting for the government to improve the economy some communities are finding ways to help themselves and each other make it through these tough economic times.

Over the holidays I had the opportunity to visit some friends in a nearby town. This community has been particularly hard hit by the economy and most were having difficulty just trying to make ends meet. It looked like Christmas was going to be forgotten until a group of neighbors came up with an idea that not only made Christmas possible for many of the families in the community but, helped them to save money on items of necessity as well. Their idea was to have a swap meet that involved the entire community.

A local church offered their basement to hold the shop meet and members even served lunch free of charge to all those who participated in the meet. Surprising almost everyone in the community took part. People searched through their closets and attics and collected toys and other items that were new or almost new, one woman who lived alone and spent a lot of time knitting had a table full of hats, scarves, and matching mittens. Their were clothing in all sizes, and some of the towns merchants and the more well to do brought in bags of house hold cleaners, shampoos, bath soap and even toilet paper and placed them on a table saying take what you need.

A group of kids armed with scotch tape, grocery bags and bits of donated ribbon stood by ready to wrap and decorate gifts for those people who needed it.

The swap meet began at 8 a.m. And from the time the doors opened the place was packed with people bringing in things and exchanging that they couldn’t use for things they needed. I saw a pair of brand new ice skates still in the box being exchanged for a blender and a Christmas table cloth being traded for a couple of dolls.

Most of the people found something they needed or wanted either for themselves or for gifts for family members and most of people who I had an opportunity to talk to said that they saved $50.00 to $100.00 or got things they desperately needed but, had no money to buy.

Surprisingly the table of free items was not stripped bare by a few needy or greedy people instead people picked up one or two items they absolutely needed and left the rest for those also in need. At the days end, instead of packing up the remains the entire community offered what they had remaining to people who needed things but, had nothing to swap.

Not only was the entire event run smoothly but, everyone left feeling more hopeful than one would imagine with plans for another swap day in the spring. This event was no hand out to anyone as everyone brought something to swap. One man who was unemployed exchanged certificates of service for gifts for family members and items his family needed. It was one of the finest examples, of neighbors helping one another I have ever seen and showed that when people put their heads together they can make things happen.

While this swap meet did not make anyone money it did help people get items they needed and could not afford and made life a little easier for those who took part. It is one of many innovative ways people are finding to make it through these tough economic times together. Perhaps, what this small community has done will be an example for others to follow.
