January also brings in the intrigue of guessing what this new year ahead of us is going to be like.

We all know that New Year’s resolutions that are made in the spur of a moment aren’t meant to last long. It is commonly said that by the end of January, they will most probably be forgotten. However, I do think it is wise to revise our lifestyles. It is good to spare a moment to think of what we have done, or haven’t we done, during the year. In this regards, it is a good thing to have written a diary. Even if we only spent few minutes to note down few things about our days.

New Year resolutions seem to be the same ones -give up smoking, lose weight, eat more healthily and so on and so forth. We probably thought that we needed to go on a diet, when we tried to put on our party dress, or we exclaimed that we were going to give up smoking after a fit of cough and two packets smoked in the party.

Giving up smoking

Why do you think you have to give up smoking? Have you been influenced by this worldwide campaign that claims that smoking kills? I haven’t. As I always say, smoking isn’t perhaps the healthiest thing to do. Or is it? It all depends on how you do it. I’m a moderate smoker who can go without it for many days. I’m not one who will go out at midnight, no matter the weather, to buy a packet of cigarettes. However, I have my cigarettes, as I put it. When I get up in the morning, I do feel in very low spirits. Therefore, the only good thing to put me up is a good breakfast, coffee and a couple of cigarettes. Afterwards, I am ready to strive in the day ahead. So, this won’t be one of my new year resolutions. I do hate compulsive smoking, though, and I won’t be one to leave a friend in the bar, saying that I have to go out for a smoke.

Eating healthily and losing weight

Are you overweight or even obese? If so, you don’t have to wait until the year draws to an end to do something about it. Being overweight or even obese carries many illnesses and it will contribute a lot to low self-esteem. Not in vain, we say that we are what we eat. Eating well isn’t only healthier, but it is a lot cheaper too. First of all, we have to learn how to cook and then, how to shop for food. A good and reasonable shopping bag should contain fruit, a choice of vegetables, meat for a stew, fish, potatoes… A balance diet should be part of our lifestyle and laziness when in comes to cooking a meal should be avoided. Have three cooked square meals a day and there won’t be a need to snack at all times.

Walks and excursions

Are you a couch potato? Do you have to get into the car to drive few yards away? I find it good to have a brisk walk late in the evening, which helps me to stretch my legs and to clear my head. I do feel in a better mood when I get back home. At weekends, I love getting on a bus or train to spend a day in a small town to have a good walk in the country. It really is a battery recharger. But we must take this convinced that it is good for us. If one isn’t really convinced, it is likely that it will be soon forgotten.

Courses and leisure activities

It is good to take up a course on something we always wanted to learn, as well as partaking in a leisure activity that will help us to interact and to make new friends. But we have to be sure that we shall take it on seriously till the end. Nothing can be more unsatisfactory for us that starting things to leave them unfinished. In the end, it results in a lot of unhappiness. Therefore, think of it well.

January

Many people hate this month, because the festive season has already ended. The council employees have removed the multicoloured lightening and life goes back to normality. They are most probably broke, because they have spent way too much in December. However, I don’t. I love the feeling of seeing the quiet streets again. Days are getting longer and there seems to be a sort of freshness in the air. There is also the intrigue of guessing what the new year ahead is going to be like.

From a young age, we study up till high school. Matters regarding which school to attend have never cross our mind due to we're not given a chance to choose. However, when we get to choose for our tertiary studies, it often causes headaches. For the few lucky ones, parents are always there to arrange. Before we proceed to the factors to consider before choosing the right college/ university, you should have an idea of which field you want to be involve in the future.

Location

Most of us overlook this factor when considering which college/university to enrol. This is very important because the safety of your upcoming few years relies on your decision. For example, if you choose to be enrol into a university located in a rural area far away from home, who will come to your rescue when you faces any emergency? Being in a city doesn’t mean you’re any safer too. Rate of reported cases such as robberies, traffic accidents, snatch thieves are often higher in busy cities compare to rural areas. Henceforth, this factor should be considered carefully before deciding on which college/ university.

Fees

Tuition fees should be reasonable and affordable to ease the burden of your parents. You can always enquire if there is any financial aid provided by the college/university fow low income families or scholarships offered for good academic results. This would also help you in determining your target / goal in your academic result.

Recognition

It is very important that after you’ve graduated, the certification that you’re awarded is recognised in your country, or better if it is internationally recognise. Look at the current status of the previous students of a choosen university/ college. Which company are they working in? A recognised academic institution should have a number of students working in big organisations / listed companies.

Courses offered / Specialty

After all the consideration above, , it would be useless if the course you intend to take is not offered in the chosen college/ university. You can always look through the list of courses offered so that you’ll have a better picture when you’re required to choose a major in the later year. You can also choose a college/ university base on the college/university’s specialty. For example, if you’ve chosen to be in the accountancy field, you should focus more on the colleges / universities that are well known for its profession in the accountancy field.

Decision

Finally, the decision for which should be the chosen college / university lies on you. You can also attend education fairs to enquire and seek advise from the professionals on your doubts. However, always bear in mind of the enrolment dates so that you would not miss it!

The start of the new UCAS cycle has begun, and many people are beginning to agonise about their UCAS choices. What universities should you apply for? What grades should these universities be asking for? Muffinz gives some helpful hints.

As someone who’s gone through UCAS twice, I’ve tried two very different methods of organising my university choices. I am going to outline what I believe to be the best method, which I’m going to dub “Testing the water”. This method allows you to save your choices for the places you really do want to go to, and shows you how best to research and make decisions about universities.

DISCLAIMER: In this article I advocate, if you feel comfortable with doing so, applying for courses whose standard offer is higher than your predicted grades. This is often a VERY BAD MOVE and you will often be rejected immediately for competitive courses. You have been warned.

How to Test the Water

“Testing the water” involves not using all your UCAS choices at once. You will use 4 of your 5 choices initially, leaving one spare depending on your application. One of your original 4 choices will be a “safe choice” – a university and course you would like to attend that you’re reasonably sure of receiving an offer. The application can go two ways:

You receive an offer from this “safe choice”, which will be suitable for an insurance choice. You use your final choice for a “reach choice” - a university who asks for high grades, is prestigious, and you’d love to attend.

You don’t receive an offer from this “safe choice”. You use your final choice on an “even safer choice” – a university and course you’d like to attend and are almost guaranteed to get an offer for.

In most cases you’ll get scenario one, and you can have 3 or 4 “reach” choices without repercussions.

To select your choices, you should do the following;

Look at your predicted grades. What did you get at AS? Are you going to retake? What are you predicted for A2? It would be wise to find out what your predicted grades are before you look at universities, as admissions procedures can place a lot of weight on them. If you got straight A’s at AS and are predicted straight A’s for A2 (and maybe the odd A* thrown in), then the world’s your oyster. If you didn’t do so well at AS but your teachers have faith enough to predict you AAA/AAB, then there’s still good reason to aim high. The main thing with your predicted grades is to try to keep your choices within a few grades of that prediction. If your teachers think you’ll get BBB at A2, try to keep your choices around there, and maybe push for a few universities who want ABB if you think you can personally make those grades.

Look at the websites of the 1994 universities, and the Russell Group universities. These are generally prestigious universities who have very good records of graduate employment, and so will be your best choices. If your grades are perhaps not good enough for these universities, then consult League Tables such as the Guardian’s and the Sunday Times’. You will want to attend and institution reasonably good for your subject, and this is the place to start.

Make a list of places you’d like to go that ask for your predicted grades (and maybe a few higher if you’d like to take that risk), and some that are a grade lower than your predicted. This means that if you’re predicted ABB, look at universities asking for ABB, maybe some AAB, and a few asking for BBB. Alternatively, if there’s a course you’d really like doing that is lower than this, feel free to list it.

Read about their courses and decide what kind of university you’d like to attend. Would you like to do a wide-ranging course with lots of choice? Would you like to do an industrial placement? Would you like to live in a city, or a small campus? Cross items off your list accordingly. If you want to go to Cambridge but can’t stand the idea of the city or course, cross it off your list immediately. There’s no point in applying – you won’t want to go there. Do not list universities for the sake of it – make sure you’d be very happy attending any of these choices!

Read the smallprint. Do these universities ask for an extra AS grade you don’t have, or prefer it? Take those off the list. These will mean an instant rejection on the grounds of your grades. Read any admission advice these universities have, particularly on the personal statement. For example, one university I applied for last year stated on their website that “because of the amount of applications [they] receive, [they] will reject anyone whose predicted grades do not meet our standard offer”. Watch out for these things!

If you have any questions, ask. Email admissions – they’ll be happy to answer any questions you have, including questions about applicants per place, if they’re happy to consider applications from people who have predicted grades less than the standard offer, and anything else you might like to ask. It may save you a wasted choice!

Think about diversifying. Many universities will have high offers for their “pure” courses, and far lower offers for joint honours. If you’d be happy doing a joint honours course (that of course you’d be interested in studying) to attend a certain university, feel free to do so. Of course, these choices will have to be reflected in your personal statement.

Narrow it down. At this point you have 2 choices: select 3 “reach” choices (your predicted grades or higher), and 1 “safe” choice (lower than your predicted grades), or 2 “reach” and 2 “safe”.

Bear in mind this is an article about your university choices, and not any other part of the application. Feel free to look at my other articles for advice on Personal Statements and Choices.

So, at this point you should have 4 (or more) choices.

2 or more “reach” choices

2 or more “safe” choices

For example, when I last applied I went for the following;

Predicted: AAA

“Reach”: Durham (AAA), Bristol (AAA)

“Safe”: Liverpool (AAB), Leeds (AAB)

This left me with one reserve choice. Most universities stop taking applications for popular courses around the January deadline, so by this time you should have filled your fifth spot. Generally “safe” courses reply faster than “reach” ones, and I got my first offer (Liverpool) within a fortnight. I then added a third “reach” choice, York (AAA).

I truly believe that “Testing the water” is a great method for UCAS applications which is often overlooked due to the “Must use 5 choices” mentality. If you just wait a little while, you can get a UCAS choice in you only could have dreamt of!

I wish you all the best of luck

You know you're a graduate student, so the joke goes, when your office is better decorated than your home and you have a favorite flavor of instant noodle. In most countries, a Ph.D. is a fundamental requirement for a career in academia. It is an introduction to the world of independent research, a kind of intellectual masterpiece, created by an apprentice in close collaboration with a supervisor. The requirements to complete it varies considerably between countries, universities and even themes. Some students will not have to spend two years working on a master's degree or diploma. Some receive a stipend, while others will pay their own way. Some Ph.D. 'Engaging research only, some require training and testing, and some require the student to teach students.

Read More at www.PhDofEducation.com. The night before All Saints in 1517, Martin Luther nailed 95 theses to the door of a church in Wittenberg. In these days of a thesis is just a position we wanted to do. Luther, an Augustinian monk, said Christians could not buy a place in paradise. Now a doctoral thesis is both an idea and an account of an original IP. Writing is the purpose of the hundreds of thousands of students undertaking a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) each year. And a thesis may be tens of pages of mathematics, or several hundred in history. As a result, new PhDs may be affected as young as their early 20s or world-weary forty somethings.

One thing that many doctoral students have in common is dissatisfaction. Some describe work as “slave labor”. Seven days a week, ten hours, low pay and uncertain prospects are widespread. There seems to be real problems with the system that produces research doctorates as there is a glut of Ph.D’s. The number of PhD positions are linked to the number of vacancies. Meanwhile, business leaders complain of a lack of high-level skills, suggesting doctoral graduates aren’t learning the right things. The harshest critics compare research graduates to masters of Ponzi schemes. Additional Resources available at http://www.eteachers.info.

The dominant model of the economics of education is based on human capital theory. The central idea is that education is investment in business skills and knowledge to increase revenue, or provide long-term benefits, such as the appreciation of literature (sometimes called the cultural capital). An increase in human capital can follow the technological progress as the demand for qualified employees due to the need of their skills, literacy, both in understanding the processes of production or operating machinery. A 1958 study attempted to calculate the returns to additional schooling (the percentage increase in income earned by an additional year of schooling). Later, the desired results for the performance through different people and education.

Read More at www.PhDofEducation.com. Statistics have shown that in countries where the enrollment / graduation rates have grown faster than countries without. The United States is the world’s leading progressive education movement from high school (1910-1950). There also appears to be correlation between gender differences in education levels of growth, more development has been observed in countries with a uniform distribution of the percentage of women than men in high school. When you look at correlations, information, education seems to create economic growth, but it could be that we have this causal relationship backwards. For example, if the training is considered a luxury, it may be that the wealthiest families to seek education as a status symbol, and the relationship between education that leads to prosperity.

Progress in education is not the only variable to economic growth, although, as explained about 14% of the average annual increase of labor productivity over the period 1915-2005. In the absence of a more significant relationship between formal education and productivity growth, some economists see no reason to believe that in today’s world, many skills and competencies are in terms of learning outside educational tradition, or out of school altogether.Additional Resources available at http://www.eteachers.info.

Online classes are mostly not "distance learning", which often means the person who watches a lecture and completes the work at home. Online education today takes advantage of multi-media creations of interactive lessons and opportunities for collaboration among peers and library resources online to compete with brick and mortar colleges. In addition, while students had to connect once at specific times to listen to a conference, you can now sign up on line for your own convenience from anywhere with access to a computer. Flexibility has greatly improved the ability of dedicated students to graduate from the college of their choice.

Read More at www.PhDofEducation.com. It is easy to locate bachelor and master degree programs, which advertise their courses entirely online. But you may find that many of the doctoral programs still require some sort of presence on campus, both because of the demands of the University or the practical application of the components, seminars, workshops and other elements that are difficult to do electronically. Some universities require that you already have a job in your field both in practice and similar relationships. In these cases it may be easier to find a program that is entirely online. However, you may still want to pay a personal visit to the department chair and director of the thesis defense panel as these individuals have a significant impact on the student’s success throughout the program.

A PhD or doctorate will take several years to study, at least four. If you can learn all year, you may be able to reduce to three years and then complete the second half of the thesis while working full time. When the course is completed, you must complete the exams to be taken on campus or somewhere where the exam can be proctored. Additional Resources available at http://www.eteachers.info.

If you are looking to explore the career path of becoming a PhD in education, there are several job options that often have excellent employment rates with comparably higher salaries to that of those applicants with only a Masters or Bachelors. Becoming a “Doctor” will lend you to the top of the resume pile when applying to be a public school principal. However, don’t expect such service when applying for the top position of superintendent.

Read More at www.PhDofEducation.com. Other administrator positions within education also offer higher salaries than other jobs but no by much. And one must take into account that these jobs are political in nature and therefore subject to turnover. On the other hand, a well established and respectable doctoral graduate could have a long and illustrious career as well. Many PhD’s make more of their income writing as published authors while employed by institutions such as colleges, universities or public school districts. There are several avenues including periodicals, newsletters, textbooks, journals and newspapers. Most of which fairly exclusively hire academics with advanced post graduate degrees.

Upon retirement, many academics continue their work privately as consultants in their respective fields. For example, a historian would be able to freelance as a consultant to a local museum. Other more ambitious retirees with PhD’s will compile their life’s work in the form of compendiums of research or grand ideas. It is those works that most PhD’s have make long lasting impressions. Additional Resources available at http://www.eteachers.info.

The decision to participate in the graduate school and how to obtain a PhD in education is important, and not made lightly or without consideration. A typical doctoral program take 5-7 years during which you will have completed about one quarter of graduate school life. Many areas of the training are not done, students then spend 2-4 years in postdoctoral training before the start of their career. Commitment to a Ph.D. also means some sacrifice. Graduate students are generally not well paid. You can add a personal debt. In relation to your peers, you can give up years of earnings. In addition, you sacrifice yourself, because the doctoral education is the "job" that requires a lot of hard work and perseverance.

Read More at www.PhDofEducation.com. Research shows that more than half of students starting doctoral studies do not receive a doctorate because the PhD can be a bad choice in the first place, or there may be a poor fit between the student and the program. But have faith! Extension work is usually exciting and positive. Most students earn a Ph.D. all over again. Everyone is best served if future PhD students take the time to investigate the possibility of graduate study in depth – and compared to other options – make the best possible choice of career and graduate studies before they apply.

You have a variety of information sources that narrow your choices going through the doctoral application process and decision over your thesis. By asking questions, be prepared to hear things you do not want to know! Remember that no person or place is perfect. But beware of the warning you get. To understand the possible applications, you can use university catalogs and program (paper and Internet), rankings and published guides. Ask your current faculty or other teachers you know.

To investigate certain programs, there are many steps. Speak with graduate students on your own and other institutions, they can help you to think about questions, and they probably know about other programs. It is very, very useful to visit the campus and the department and develop your own opinions. While you’re there, talk to teachers and staff of these programs. Discuss with students who are enrolled there. Visit classes and labs, if you can. Additional Resources available at http://www.eteachers.info.

While only a small percentage of teachers and academics strive to earn their PhD in educational philosophy, fewer still graduate with the honor. For some, the concept of the doctoral process is daunting, but as they say, anything worth doing is worth doing well. If your goal is to become a Doctor in the field of education, you must tackle a thesis and it must be defended in front of a panel of professors before you to can become one of their colleagues. Whether studying online for your degree or at a local university, the work remains difficult but rewarding.

Read More at www.PhDofEducation.com. The benefits of enriching students lives, being looked at as a mentor and having the authority and expertise to be a master teacher far outweigh the amount of work it takes to achieve such goals. Your studies will bring you down many personal journeys and tests which will guide you along your own view of philosophy. That type of self-awareness will well arm you to be at the forefront of educational reform as a thought leader and proponent of change. The degree, itself, will arm you to be a professor at a university or a leader in the public school setting. While both are quite rewarding, I believe that every PhD in the field of education needs to spend at least a modicum of time in the public school context to truly understand the social impacts of being a student in today’s school system.

Philosophy has long encompassed ethics and morals yet those two pillars of community are typically absent from the the average classroom across the country. With a PhD in Philosophy of Education, you will be poised to not only remedy this but to have a long and healthy career in a field that is rewarding and fulfilling. Please read through the rest of this site for even more information about educational psychology physician’s degrees and the implications it will have on your career. Best of luck!
