Romantic Scammers

The internet and World Wide Web have presented opportunities for a range of scammers: politicians, televangelists and others. The first internet scams copied old real world scams: the African Fee Scam is almost a direct copy of the Spanish Prisoner Scam of 1905 for example.

The Romantic Scammer now uses the features of the internet to target people seeking love. In recent years sites to have arisen to cater to this need and scammers have seen an opportunity to fleece the naïve, the vulnerable and those in denial about age and appearance.

The take home point is that not everyone is what they seem and there is no substitute for face to face contact. The next take home point is that sometimes people are what they seem and you need to develop the ability to tell who is genuine. The third take home point is to be wary but not excessively cynical.

Australian Federal Attorney General’s office will review the 24 cases involving Indonesian nationals (citizens) who perform human smuggling. The assessment follows a report from the Australian Human Rights Commission is concerned that some of these citizens who are serving time in prison is still a minor.
