When the Cuban Revolution inspired and also led by Fidel Castro succeeded in taking power in 1959 it prompted the American government in to taking action to overthrow or seriously weaken the new left wing regime in Havana. The US as will be discussed below did not intend for Fidel Castro to remain in power and maintain a radical socialist regime so close to the US mainland itself. Both the outgoing Eisenhower and the subsequent Kennedy administrations took active steps to isolate and strangle the island of Cuba, many of which stayed in place until President Barack Obama’s decision to relax sanctions in 2009.
