As of June 30, 2011, 34 states enforce the death penalty, including the U.S. government and U.S. military, and 16 states are without the death penalty. The total number of executions from 1976 to 2011 is 1,259 lives. Over the past ten years however, half of all states have had no executions, where it has dropped dramatically since 1976. Is this a reflection or admittance that the death penalty has failed?
