Do you want to become a more effective communicator? Maybe you're saying all the right words, but did you know that only about 7% of what you say actually makes up the message you're conveying to another person?

How you say something (tone/inflection), where your eyes are looking, and what your body is communicating all make up the other 93% of communication. Have you ever wondered why you just knew if someone was interested in you or why they weren’t? A slight eyebrow raise, a small smile, and open arms all send clear signals.

This article will give insight into some things you can do to make sure you’re conveying the message you’re intending and hoping to send. Be successful in business, relationships and all other relationships by being aware of how you are coming across to the world.

Attraction and Interest in a Significant Other

You see him/her across the room, a slight raise of the brow, a quick glance away and glance back with eye connection and you’re certain that they’re interested. But, how do you know it without any words having been said? There are certain nonverbal cues that signal interest. For example, when two people lean in toward the each other and begin to mirror one other’s movements it shows a clear indication of mutual interest.

Men

When a man is interested in a woman he will often stand with his thumbs in his belt loops or on his hips which accentuate one’s stature. He will also stand with his feet pointed in the direction of the object of his affection. If he’s sitting and crossing his legs, his leg will be pointing in the direction of the person he’s most attracted to in the room. Keep in mind if they’re not pointed in your direction, he’s “just not that into you.”

Men will also smooth down their hair, fix and adjust ties, sleeves and pull up their socks. This is a preening process and shows that a man wants to look good for the person he’s interested in.

Women

For women, pointing and crossing legs in your direction give the same signal of interest and attraction. Women will also play with their hair and jewelry. Whenever an action suggests taking one’s clothes off, like unzipping a jacket or dangling a shoe of a toe, this quite powerfully suggests attraction. Standing with hands on hips is also a clear indication that a woman is attracting to a man.

General Non-Verbal Actions and Their Meanings

Boredom

If you’re feeling bored while in a business environment, there are certain actions you will want to make sure you avoid. If you cross your legs and kick your foot, you’re sending the message that you’d clearly rather be any place other than where you’re at in that moment. Have you been resting your head in your hand with your eyes downcast? If so, keep in mind that this sends a message to your co-workers that you’re probably thinking about what’s for dinner versus what illuminating fact they’ve just presented to you. And, if you keep your head tilted for a prolonged period of time, rest assured that others will know they’re the last thing you’re thinking about.

Confidence and Authority

Whether you’re in the workplace or any other situation, exuding an air of confidence is a quality that is highly attractive and helps you reach greater levels of happiness and success in all areas of your life. To give off such an air, be sure to walk with excellent posture in a brisk walk. If you are sitting place your hands behind your head and cross your legs. This action also conveys an air of superiority and is a very common position that CEO’s and other such authoritarian figures take when speaking with subordinates. Another way to show that you feel confident and powerful is to “steeple” the fingers. This means that you place the hands so that each opposing fingertip is touching the other forming a pyramid-like picture.

Sincerity and Openness

Do you want to show others that you have nothing to hide and that you’re genuinely interested in them? There are certain things you can do beside just saying that you care. While someone is speaking, quickly tilt your head to show interest. If you’re speaking gesticulate with open palm motions, this conveys the message that you’re innocent, open and sincere; all refreshingly winning qualities.

Disbelief & Doubt

If you notice someone rubbing their eye while you’re talking to them, unless they have something in it, they’re most likely sending the message that they don’t believe what you’re saying. The same is true if they look down with their face turned away from you or they begin to touch or slightly rub their nose. If they’re talking and making these same motions, the tables have now turned and it’s possible that they’re the ones who are probably telling you a lie. Trust your instincts and understand that sometimes people do these things because they have an itch or wear contact lenses, etc. It’s important to take the whole picture into consideration when evaluating non-verbal cues

Decisions, decisions, decisions

Have you ever seen a friend, co-worker or significant other stroke their chin while you’re talking about things the two of you could do together? Or maybe you’re discussing politics and religion. When a person strokes their chin, typically this means they are trying to make a decision. Similarly, if someone is indecisive he or she will show this emotion by pulling or tugging at their ear lobe. If a person is evaluating a situation or thinking about it, they will tend to put their hand to their cheek. These are all indicators that a person wants to make a decision, but still needs some time before coming to a conclusion.

God, that is God with a capital "G," is supposed to be omniscient, omnibenevolent, omnipotent, omnipresent, etc. Essentially, God with a capital "G" is the Judeo-Christian god, and I do not believe in him.

At the same time, I do not believe in Allah and other deities in general. With regards to deities in general, they usually have some sort of mystical and supernatural power. Not all of them are omnipotent or omniscient or whatnot, but pretty much all of them have some sort of supernatural power and are fairly powerful. To be as concise as possible, I do not believe in the existence of anyone with supernatural powers. This includes God, Vishnu, Zeus, ghosts, etc. This also includes some sort of “prime mover” or vital spiritual force.

As previously mentioned, God (the Judeo-Christian one) is omnipotent, omniscient, omnibenevolent, and he did create the universe. Some people posit that God lives in a dimension or universe separate from ours. Whether or not God has emotions is something religious believers sometimes argue over. In any case, in both the Old and New Testament, God does at times get angry and he does at times become happy. Religious people usually believe that God is knowable only to a certain extent. We can know and understand certain aspects about God, though religious folks usually don’t believe that we can know or understand him completely. And, since God is omnipotent, he should have the ability to take over the human form. There is nothing contradictory about that.

Why don’t I believe in God? Well, I am very pragmatic and skeptical to begin with. Being an ex-Christian, I am at least decently versed in the Bible and I have read it through entirely (though I may not remember everything). I have noticed that the more I read the Bible, the less I believe in it. To someone as skeptical as myself, the Bible has too many loopholes for me to believe. Certain instances are outright impossible and there are many contradictions. For example, Exodus 15:3 says God is a man of war. Romans 15:33 says God is peace. What? Not only that, but Exodus 35:2 says that if you work on Sabbath day, you will be put to death. The entire chapter of Leviticus 20 has numerous reasons why people should be put to death, including adultery and homosexuality. But, one of the Ten Commandments is “Thou shalt not kill”. So, apparently, putting people to death for adultery and working on the Sabbath does not qualify as murder, at least according to the Bible.

There are passages of the Bible that mention the earth being immovable, which we know today is not true. Certain passages also suggest a geocentric model of the universe. There’s the story of Noah, which seems just outright impossible from a modern perspective. And then, there’s the theory of evolution, which seems to suggest that the beginning parts of Genesis are wrong. There are certain Christian denominations that believe that evolution is perfectly compatible with the Bible and that the story of Adam and Eve may well be a metaphor for the creation of life; the most prominent of these denominations is Catholicism. But, then again, where in the Bible is it suggested that it’s a metaphor? Where does the metaphor start and where does it end?

So, as you can see, I am very skeptical and I think that the Bible is wrong about a lot of things, so it may well be wrong about God. Although showing the inconsistencies in the text does not prove that God does not exist, it does question his existence and provide evidence for his inexistence.

But then, there are many gods out there so if the Christian God does not exist, it may be that Vishnu or Shiva or Zeus does. True, there are many religions and many gods, but no single religion seems to be making any headway against the others. All the religions that I know of seem to have its equal amount of flaws. There are many religions out there and certain religions are mutually exclusive. They can’t all be right, but they can all be wrong. Not only that, but I do not have the time to individually consider every single deity out there. There is one thing all deities have and that is their supernatural quality. I focus on the Judeo-Christian God because that is the one I am most familiar with and because it is probably the most well known in the Western world. In any case, this supernatural quality is completely unfounded by evidence and contradicts much of what we know about the world.

But, suppose that there is no evidence supporting or negating the existence of deities. Even so, I would not be a theist. I wouldn’t go around assuming the existence of something just because it is possible that it exists. Why would I go around believing in a tiny celestial teapot just because there isn’t evidence negating its existence? The onus is on the theist, not the atheist.
