This is the final of three articles that depict a busy day and tense day in Cambridge, Maryland.

Both President Obama and Vice President Biden came to the Cambridge, Maryland Hyatt on January 27 to address their fellow democrats during their retreat at the resort.

The first article showed some of the tight security. “Some” because I sure did not care to nose around too much in the area. Be it known to all that the agencies charged to protect our leaders mean business to do so.

The second article had pictures of Vice-President Biden’s motorcade leaving the Hyatt.

This article will show President Obama’s motorcade arriving at the Hyatt. My schedule made it so that I could not cover President Obama leaving. However, I was able to get one more picture of the Capitol police.

All pictures were taken by me, copyright 2012.

This looks like three Capitol Police cycles leaving the Hyatt. I’m guessing they were to go to the Cambridge-Dorchester County airport to be part of President Obama’s motorcade.

A TV news reporter prepares a young girl for an interview across from the Hyatt.

With President Obama minutes away a helicopter again makes a security sweep over the area.

Usually when the President travels, at least as observed from his visits to Cambridge, there are three helicopters, the President being on one of them. Today there was only two at first and here they are seen heading to our local airport.

Now, the third helicopter follows them in.

Shortly after the helicopters were sighted, traffic was stopped again. Here is eastbound U.S. 50 being closed.

A small crowd gathered nearby me to watch the motorcade.

A lead security vehicle was ahead of the motorcade.

Now, a possible problem. A bicyclist approaches the Hyatt. Police there waved him on to go by, and he cut across to the eastbound lane of U.S. 50. I am not sure if this was a mistake or not.

Security vehicles follow shortly after the bicyclist passes the Hyatt. These vehicles were stopped and blockaded a portion of the road while a third vehicle (shown in second picture) came down westbound U.S. 50 and swung around heading eastbound. Bystanders to my left acted like the trooper stopped the bicyclist.

Lead cyclists head the motorcade.

Lead vehicles.

President Obama is in one of these vehicles, and there is at least one more behind these in the first photo. I do not think he was in the first one because, in the next photograph, I believe that vehicle stopped. I am guessing he was in the second vehicle.

White vans followed.

The remainder of the motorcade.

Due to scheduling, I was unable to catch the President leaving, later in the afternoon I was able catch some Capitol Police getting something to eat. “You deserve a break today,” but McDonald’s is closed (really torn down) for renovation and, besides, Arby’s is better.

Notes:

Part one was Tight Security in Cambridge, Maryland for President and Vice-president 2012 Visit.

Part two was Motorcade of Vice-president Joe Biden Leaving The Cambridge Hyatt January 27, 2012.

In no way should it be construed that I favor the re-election of Barack Obama as President of the United States. Currently, I support Rick Santorum. These articles were produced out of the desire to share a small piece of history with others giving due respect to our Nation’s leaders and to the dedicated personnel on all levels who protect our leaders during such visits.

This is the second of three part series about the January 27, 2012, visit to the Cambridge, Maryland Hyatt by Vice President Biden and President Obama who came to address their fellow Democrats at the resort.

The previous article dealt with the security maintained during the visits of the President and Vice President.

The following pictures were taken by me, copyright 2012.

The Cambridge City Police officer stationed at the junction of U.S. 50 and MD 16 prepares for the exit of the Vice President from the Hyatt. He and other officers stationed elsewhere will stop all traffic so the Vice President may safely travel to the Cambridge-Dorchester County airport.

A helicopter circles the area prior to Vice-President Biden leaving the Hyatt.

MSP vehicle exits Hyatt with lights and siren activated just before the Vice-President makes his exit and heads onto eastbound U.S. 50. I am not sure why. The airport is in that direction. Perhaps he was making a security sweep.

The signal is given and law enforcement spring into action to stop traffic. Above is the Cambridge City police officer who was stationed at the junction of U.S. 50 and MD 16, directly across from the Hyatt.

His colleague behind him redirects traffic near the entrance of Wal-Mart on MD 16.

Remember the officer near Arby’s in the previous article? He has stopped traffic going east bound on U.S. 50 well away from the Hyatt entrance.

About five minutes later, the leading motorcycles exit from the Hyatt.

Next came the lead vehicles.

This vehicle could have been transporting Vice President Biden from the Hyatt. However, there was another vehicle behind this one, similar to it.

Here is the second possible vehicle.

Here are both vehicles. It’s hard to tell which one the Vice President is in.

The remainder of the motorcade exits the Hyatt.

Vice President Biden leaves by helicopter about fifteen minutes later.

The next pictorial article will present President Obama’s motorcade.

Notes:

This is the second of three articles concerning the January 27 visit of President Obama and Vice President Biden when they addressed the Democrat retreat at the Hyatt in Cambridge, Maryland.

Helicopters, big helicopters, have been flying over our homes in Cambridge, Maryland this past week. Word got back to me “through the grapevine” that President Obama was coming to Cambridge, and I soon found out it was true.

Last year, 2011, President Obama came when it was dark. I have a camera that is over ten years old and it just does not like dim light. However, thanks to friends posting on the Internet, I discovered that Vice-President Biden and President Obama were slated to speak to their fellow Democrats during daylight hours January 27. Biden was to make his address sometime after 10 AM, and the President at 1:30.

This is part one of a three part series of pictures. This first article deals with the security in the area. The second will deal with the arrival and departure of Vice-President Biden. The third will be the arrival of President Obama.

All pictures were taken by me, copyright 2012.

The Cambridge Hyatt is situated at the junction of U.S. 50 and MD 16. Law enforcement was stationed both east and west of the Hyatt, MD 16, and Bucktown Road. The President and Vice-President were flown into our local airport on Bucktown Road.

Capitol Police at the Hyatt stand ready to check all vehicles entering the Hyatt prior to the arrival of Vice-President Biden.

Here we see a search dog is brought over. The man in the suit could be of the Secret Service.

White vans are seen at the Cambridge-Dorchester County Airport on Bucktown Road where the Vice-President and President fly in to in order to go to the Hyatt.

Front view of the airport. Picture was taken while car was moving. There was traffic behind me so I could not stop. But then, would I want to? Every road off of Bucktown Road north of the airport, and few to the south, had a police vehicle present (marked or unmarked).

Having passed the airport I turned around to head back to the Hyatt area. Above, an officer in an unmarked car observes me for a second time.

I believe these are Dorchester County Sheriff vehicles on the right.

I pass by other law enforcement along Bucktown Road. Here, near U.S., is a Maryland State Police car.

Above, Cambridge City Police are stationed at an exit from a shopping area on to U.S. 50. This officer, along with some of the others shown, at the given signal will stop traffic for safe passage of not only the Vice-President, but the President.

The next pictorial article, part two of this three part series, will show Vice-President Biden’s motorcade leaving the Hyatt.

Young people of Dorchester County, Maryland came out July 5, 2011 to the Empowerment Center on Pine Street in Cambridge as the Pine Street Committee’s (PSC) summer youth program got under way. Each summer the PSC provides a variety of educational activities to enhance the basic skills of youth within a safe environment.

Though 64 children have been enrolled in this year’s program, program director Octavene Saunders said, “We had to turn down around twenty children because we were not able to have enough financing to accept the children in order to have people that can help us. While we do have some volunteers, others receive a stipend and we have to have supplies.”

She continued, “We did not get any funding from the city of Cambridge to help with our summer youth program. The funding we did receive, which was less than $1,400, came late, and helped pay for the winter program. The county, because of their budget, had to cut our funding in half this year, giving us $3,400.”

“Portia Johnson-Ennels and I have been working together trying to get little grants here and there and we have been a bit successful. We’ve tried to get funding from local organizations.”

Mrs. Saunders said of the organizations that have slot machines, only Dorchester Elks Lodge 223 and Corporal Hermon Hughes American Legion Post 87 have helped. She said the others, “don’t even give us the courtesy of replying to our requests.”

“We had some business people that had supported us, but again, everybody is knocking on their door so they can only give us so much too. We do have individuals in the community that will donate a small amount. They donate to a lot of organizations so they just squeeze out something the best they can. But we are not supported the way we should be by our municipal government. The county supports us in many ways,” she said.

While Jade Banks was one of the winners, every child was a winner as they continued to learn.

Each week the young people will be presented with the “word of the week,” where they will learn a word’s definition, spelling, and usage. This week’s word was “responsibility.” Other activities have been slated throughout the summer and workers will continue to make sure that each child knows their address, phone number and names of their parents.

The program for ages 3 to 11 is held from 9:30AM to 2:30PM Monday through Thursday. Children are provided with breakfast and lunch. Children not enrolled may also eat breakfast and lunch.

While racial tension is a fact in many communities, something positive can be done to bring people together.

Thanks to the effort of local groups, the sounds of music and laughter filled the air on April 26 in a predominately African American neighborhood of Cambridge, Maryland as people from various cultures gathered together for the second annual Dorchester-Cambridge Multi-cultural Festival.

Like other American towns and cities, Cambridge, the county seat of Dorchester County, was ravaged by racial turmoil in the 1960’s. Though there has been improvement over the decades, additional help could never hurt.

So, in 2006, the Pine Street Committee (PSC) conceived the idea of an event that would bridge the various cultures of not only the city, but the county. “I kind of suggested it, because our community seems to be so fragmented when comes to trying to bring different sections of the town together,” committee member Octavene Saunders said.

As a result, the first festival was held in April 2007 with over 200 attending. This year’s event had over twice as many attendees.

There was an abundance of games, prizes, a silent auction, vendors, food and plenty of entertainment throughout the day, with General Manager of MTS Broadcasting Troy Hill being the emcee.

After the Color Guard marched at noon, Brother Garrick C. Cook of the Cambridge Church of Christ spoke on the topic, “Bridging our Cultures — We are One!”

A scavenger hunt for young children was held in the early afternoon as well as a coloring contest throughout the day.

Entertainment included singing by Juan Hernandez, the Pleasant Day Funsters, the Heavenly Sons of Joy, a demonstration of the Salsa by Salisbury University Professor Claire Kew, The Raging Unstoppables, and Bishop J. J. Green and The Anointed Five.

“This is what it is all about – togetherness,” said Deputy Ken White of the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office. “It gives us a chance to bring the cultures together.”

“This is great,” said Tina Williams (pictured above on the right) while enjoying the festival. “It’s bringing the community together. It’s bringing the kids together as well as giving them a lot community information.”

“An event like this is good at bringing people together, but I think we have a long way to go,” said Jeffery Saunders who added that he had concerns that there was a need for more jobs in the area.

According to the 2000 census, the racial makeup of Cambridge was 49.94 percent African American, 47.75 percent Caucasian, 0.16 percent Native American, 0.65 percent Asian, 0.01 percent Pacific Islander, 0.61 percent from other races, and 0.87 percent from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.44 percent of the population.

The festival was a joint effort of the PSC, Cambridge Main Street, Cambridge Police Department, Dorchester Arts Center, Dorchester County Sheriff’s Department, Dorchester Elks Lodge 223, Dorchester County Department of Tourism, Harriet Tubman Organization, John Lewis, WCEM-WAAI, and the West End Citizens Association.

Numerous pictures from the festival can be seen at Delmarvalous Dorchester.
