It was a well-known fact that decades ago, before there were televisions, radios, or computers, men only had one form of leisure, reading. Our ancestors just read to keep themselves abreast with what is going on with their surroundings. They read so they can travel and experience the world. But with the influx of modern technology such as the Internet, cell phones and electronic games, the younger generations have somehow placed the skill and virtue of reading at a back seat. Many young people have lost the passion and skill to read and, instead, they waste their time and resources by playing video games or hanging out in the mall.

It has been observed that children and teenagers who love reading have comparatively higher IQs. They are more creative and do better in school and college. The children who start reading from an early age are observed to have good language skills, and they grasp the variances in phonics much better.

But while other kids developed the love for reading and learned it easily, there are others who seem to have difficulties in engaging in this type of normally stimulating activity. These children are often diagnosed as suffering from a form of disability called dyslexia. Dyslexia is an impairment in the brain’s ability to translate written images received from the eyes into meaningful language. Also called specific reading disability, dyslexia is the most common learning disability in children. It is affecting 5 percent or more of all elementary-age children.

A child who has dyslexia might start out doing fine in school. But gradually, it can become a struggle, especially when reading becomes an important part of schoolwork. A teacher might say that the child is smart, but doesn’t seem to be able to get the hang of reading. If a teacher or parent notices this, the best thing to do is to go to a specialist who can help figure out what’s wrong.

Dyslexia can be difficult to recognize before a child enters school, but some early clues may indicate a problem. If your young child begins talking late, adds new words slowly and has difficulty rhyming, he or she may be at increased risk of dyslexia. Dyslexia may occur in children with normal vision and normal intelligence. Children with dyslexia usually have normal speech, but often have difficulty interpreting spoken language and writing.

The cause of dyslexia seems to be a malfunction in certain areas of the brain concerned with language. The condition frequently runs in families. Treatment plans for children who have a specific reading disability should follow a sequence. The first intervention that should be tried, particularly with young children, involves systematically teaching word decoding skills. These are generally called phonics-based intervention approaches. There are many variants of phonics-based approaches and no research indicating that one approach is superior to another.

Dyslexia, as a learning disability is a condition that produces a gap between someone’s ability and his or her performance. Most people with dyslexia are of average or above-average intelligence, but read at levels significantly lower than expected. It has nothing to do with IQ; many smart, accomplished people have it, or are thought to have had it, including Winston Churchill and Albert Einstein. Dyslexics are unusually insightful, who bring a new perspective, who think out of the box.

Without the needed support for dyslexics, dyslexia can snuff out dreams at an early age, as children lose their way in school, fall into depression, then lose their self-esteem and drive. Dyslexics don’t outgrow their problems, and reading and writing usually remain hard work for life. However, with proper teaching, counseling, and adept tutoring, they do learn to manage.

Reading deficiency has many alias names. They are reading backwardness, reading retardation, reading disability and reading underachievement. Reading deficiency is a condition where children do not have skill to understand or comprehend texts or passages.

Reading deficiency on children

Children who suffer from this problem will face difficulty in learning at schools. Children who are late to catch up their lesson in reading may suffer from reading deficiency. Researchers and experts still have different opinions about this disorder. Some of them say reading backwardness, reading disability, and reading retardation. Reading deficiency is a condition where children do not have skill to understand or comprehend texts or passages.

Even though there are some labels for reading deficiency, researchers can analyze factors which cause the problems. In fact there are two major factors. First, they are biological and linguistic issues. These factors are from children themselves. Second, that is external factors which come from children social life like parents and family.

There are some names of reading deficiency on children.

Alexia

Alexia is reading retardation. Children who suffer from this can not read at all.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is lower level of Alexia.

Agrafia

Agrafia is inability to write. Children who suffer from this do not write at all.

Disagrafia

It is lower level of Agrafia. Children will face much problem in writing.

Dyslexia is caused by language retardation. Children, whose problems in verbal communication, will also own problems in reading and writing skill. L G Alexander an author of practice and progress, Longman in his preface gave pictures as follow. Verbal skill precedes speaking skill, speaking skill precedes reading skill, and reading skill precedes writing skill.

When educators and parents find their children suffer from this disease, they can analyze the matters using L G Alexander’s opinion. Are the children skilled enough in oral communication skill or they have biological and linguistic disorders? If the biological problems do not exist , children may have social life that does not support their reading skill to improve.

Plowden Comission ( 1964) England, underlined a conclusion of a research. The conclusion is that the major factor which influence children achievement at schools is from parents(Tampubolon, 1933. Mengembangkan Minat dan Kebiasaan Membaca pada Anak, Bandung, Angkasa).

Children whose parents like reading and studying are better schools.

Dyslexia or reading deficiency is not going to be a big problem if parents and educators can detect children’s problem quickly. Soon, parents know the problems, they have to do an action to give special treatment. Children who suffer from low level of dyslexia may not be getting worse when they obtain more attention and good treatment.

Do you see a DVD movie lately?

I have seen one, it’s a feel good movie from Bollywood (Indian-Hindi movie).

It is about a condition called Dyslexia. A boy having a condition characterized by a difficulty in recognizing letters and numbers rendering him unable to read and write. He became the laughing stock to his friends, teachers, classmates and even to his family. But, he had undiscovered special hidden talents. Just the same, everyone misunderstood him. The boy always felt alone and aloft, thus made him to skip or worse, absent from his classes. to his erring father this is a disgrace to him.

With this, his family decided to transfer him to a strict boarding school. To his dismay, his condition worsened due to the fact that he was away and far from his family. Even the school have decided to boot him out, until a teacher discovered and analyzed his condition, and recognized his hidden and discovered talent. The teacher, eventually volunteered to tutor and inspire the boy to work hard in his studies. The boy responded and made remarkable improvements. His family could not believe this, specially his father who expected to much from his children.

The teacher disclosed that he too had the same situation as the boy when he was still young.

In the end, the boy and his teacher’s efforts were given due recognition by the school and a better and brighter future is ahead of him.

Every parent should watch this and for all those who dictate their way with their children this will be a great lesson.

The title of the movie is, “Every Child is Special”.

An article describing a form of dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a learning disability. It is also known as a developmental reading disorder. When a person has dyslexia they tend to read letters backwards and upside down, etc. This is because the brain can’t process the words properly. It can also happen with numbers. In some cases, a person can have both of these problems in one shot.

It is uncommon for most people to understand the severity of dyslexia. Some people will think you are lazy when it comes to math, especially if you are dyslexic with numbers yet happen to be a voracious reader. It isn’t uncommon for this to happen, it just isn’t talked about much.

So why do I know so much about dyslexia with arithmetic? Have you not figured it out by now? Okay, well I have the disorder. I wasn’t officially diagnosed with it but I do have trouble reading numbers which makes me less efficient with math. It has also gotten me fired from jobs… I also have been called lazy and told I only gave up math. From ignorant people like these, their ignorance in that area causes them to think that way. After all, I am a voracious reader yet math I always have trouble with. I have trouble speaking at times too which is another form of dyslexia and another reason why I don’t speak very much usually. I think my chronic chest pains have something to do with that as well, but I am not sure.

I remember one time my dyslexia in math really got me in trouble. I faced discrimination due to my learning disability. I tried to get a job at a certain supermarket. The owner of that store somehow found out about my learning disability. He asked “Have you gotten over your dyslexia yet?” I was stunned. Needless to say, I never obtained the job. There is a lot more to that too, but that will be in my comic if you continue to read it when I put new pages up…

DISABILITY: A condition been diagnosed by a professional where the person effected has difficulty in engaging in the normal activities of everyday life.

Whatever disorder and disability a person has does not matter, either way it affects the mind and how you live your life. This article is not supposed to diagnose any one all this article does is give the difference between the two and what is involved.

What is Learning Disorder?

In this article, we are going to see what a learning Disorder is, we will cover learning disability in another article. Learning disorders is where people young and old have difficulty in academic areas for instance reading, writing, mathematics or all three of them; these disorders affect the ability to achieve every day academic living. One other disorder is of fine motor skills, this is not touched in this article.

People who have learning disorder have trouble in acquiring, retaining as well as processing information. Unfortunately, test shows that people who have disorders are below their IQ range in the area they have issues.

Disorder in Reading

This disorder is one of the most common areas, people with this have difficulty in understanding letters and putting them on paper in words, also known as Dyslexia. It means that they also can’t recognize and decode sounds and syllables in language in general

Disorder in Mathematics

With mathematics the problems is always with numbers, people who have this cannot recognize and count number the way they supposed to. This disorder usually is picked up when you are a child in elementary school; also, this disorder is normally linked with reading and Dyslexia.

Written expression Disorder

This is very similar to Dyslexia and mathematics disorder as well as reading, so therefore it covers that and spelling, punctuation, grammar as well as organizing their thought in writing.

Processing disorders with information

Again, this links up with the other types of disorders that I have mentioned previously, people with this problem have trouble processing the input they receive from their brains specifically sight and sound. These people can see as well as hear 100% however they do have problems in knowing the difference between visual and auditory signals and processing it.

Please do not use this to diagnose yourself or anyone else. This is hear because of information purposes only, please if you do see a problem do not wait go, see a professional, and get it sorted as quickly as possible. The sooner you find out the easier life will be.

One movie that caught my attention is a bollywod film entitled Taare Zameen Par. I am not a fan of bollywood. I have watched only two movies. But so far, these two movies have not frustrated me.

Taare Zameen Par (Every Child is Special) is a story of an extraordinary kid and an extraordinary teacher. A boy merely nine years old experienced the pains he should not have experienced at a very young age. Broken. Desperate. Alone. That’s what he felt… His world of fantasy does not exist in the minds of many people. He is the only one who can see planets talking, numbers and letters dancing. As a result, he was brought to a boarding school where he felt his world fell apart. The world that was once beautiful in his eyes began to dwindle. But during the time that he felt like he is nothing and alone, a teacher full of life, love and sees world in a different perspective came and became his friend.

Lesson 1: Let us not look at the symptoms, instead let us look at the cause. Ishaan, a child who was diagnosed with dyslexia, finds it hard to read, write and do math because the letters look very difficult for him. He doesn’t see it the way we see letter and numbers. His father is looking at the symptoms and not at the cause. Instead of helping Ishaan, Ishaan felt inferior. He felt like he does not belong in a family.

Lesson 2: The most important thing is love. Love is understanding a person even if sometimes he is not understandable. You hear his silent sobs and sighs, You see his bleeding heart and you feel his hands asking for you to help him. A boy who has a dyslexia cannot shout what he feels. He cannot even understand himself and he is asking for support. It is good that his teacher, Nikumbh, responded to his needs.

Lesson 3: Appreciation is very important. A person needs to feel that he is appreciated. Ishaan was much appreciated by his teacher, Nikumbh, because he has shown extraordinary talent in painting that no one in their school could surpass this.

Lesson 4: All bad experiences are not wasted. Let us not let our past define us. Let us use this as a stepping stone.

You see, even movies can give us lessons in life. Taare Zameen Par is a film that opens our eyes to a world unseen to us. So let us not just look at the storyline, but let us look at the lessons it offers. Salute to those people who do films because they want to bring positive message to the public.

Phonological awareness is an important foundation for learning to read. Scientific research has documented that phonological awareness is a better predictor of reading success than IQ, vocabulary, or socioeconomic level of the family.

Phonological awareness skills are key to reading success.
Research has shown that children who begin reading instruction with sufficiently developed phonological awareness understand the instruction better, master the alphabetic principle faster and learn to read quite easily.

Children who will later be identified as being dyslexic often do not have phonological awareness skills. Teaching these skills has been shown in research to prevent the occurrence of dyslexia in many children. Accordingly, many school systems now follow a program of early screening for phonological awareness skills.

No area of reading research has gained as much attention over the past two decades as phonological awareness. Perhaps the most exciting finding emanating from research on phonological awareness is that critical levels of phonological awareness can be developed through carefully planned instruction, and this development has a significant influence on children’s reading and spelling achievement.

Why Is Phonological Awareness So Important?

An awareness of phonemes is necessary to grasp the alphabetic principle that underlies our system of written language. Specifically, developing readers must be sensitive to the internal structure of words.

If children understand that words can be divided into individual phonemes and that phonemes can be blended into words, they are able to use letter-sound knowledge to read and build words. As a consequence of this relationship, phonological awareness is a strong predictor of later reading success. Researchers have shown that this strong relationship between phonological awareness and reading success persists throughout school.

Early reading is dependent on having some understanding of the internal structure of words, and explicit instruction in phonological awareness skills is very effective in promoting early reading. However, instruction in early reading – especially instruction in letter-sound correspondence – strengthens phonological awareness.

Success in early reading depends on achieving a certain level of phonological awareness. Instruction in phonological awareness is beneficial for most children and critical for others.

What Is Phonological Awareness?

Phonological awareness is the ability to break words into separate sounds. A child who has phonological awareness can tell you when two words rhyme and when two words start with the same sound. Further development of phonological awareness will allow the child to tell you when two words end with the same sound. For example, they can tell you that “bat” and “sit” end with the same sound but “bat” and “sad” do not end with the same sound.
Phonological awareness is a broad term that includes phonemic awareness. In addition, to phonemes, phonological awareness activities can involve work with rhymes, words, syllables, and onsets and rimes.

The key to the process of learning to read is the ability to identify the different sounds that make words and to associate these sounds with written words. In order to learn to read, a child must be aware of phonemes. A phoneme is the smallest functional unit of sound. For example, the word cat contains three distinctly different sounds. There are 44 phonemes in the English language, including letter combinations such as /th/.

In addition to identifying these sounds, children must also be able to manipulate them. Word play involving segmenting words into their constituent sounds, rhyming words, and blending sounds to make words is also essential to the reading process. The ability to identify and manipulate the sounds of language is called phonological awareness. There are five levels of phonological awareness ranging from an awareness of rhyme to being able to switch or substitute the components in a word.

Children generally begin to show initial phonological awareness when they demonstrate an appreciation of rhyme and alliteration. For many children, this begins very early in the course of their language development and is likely facilitated by being read to from books that are based on rhyme or alliteration.

Teaching Phonological Awareness

Early experience with nursery rhymes can help children begin to notice and think about the phonological structure of words. Several research studies have shown that the children who know more about nursery rhymes at age 3, are those that tend to be more highly developed in general phonological awareness at age 4 and in phonemic awareness at age 6.

You don’t have to stop with nursery rhymes though. Read rhyming books and sing rhyming songs and chants. Have children identify the rhyming words using picture cards and do rhyming sorts with picture cards.

Also play games that teach children to isolate individual sounds in a word. For example, this game can be played with the “BINGO” song. There was a letter had a sound and you can say it with me b, b, b, like ball…… Play the game – “What’s the First Sound in this Word” This can be done orally or with picture cards

When children learn how to “listen to language”, they are also learning to connect oral language with the written word. Once they hear, know, and are able to manipulate sounds, they begin to realize how words work.
To read more and download free PC utilities, visit my website at http://adf.ly/1VWyI

When he learns that his son is dyslexic is often the first question that comes to mind is whether you should tell your dyslexic child. There is really no right or wrong answer to this question.

• It is your decision
It will be all sorts of people who are willing to share with you their thoughts about whether you should tell your son who is dyslexic. It would be nice to hear what they have to say about their experience in this type of situation. However, the final choice. After a certain point to read and hear the views of all will come to a decision on their own.

• tell them that they have dyslexia
Some parents decide before a diagnosis is thinking what to say to family, friends and even children with dyslexia. Each word is available for the child and the relationship to friends, family, schools and everyone involved in the life of your child understands what is happening, what to expect and what will be changed.

• Not to say that dyslexia
Some parents tell their children something they are not prepared, because of lack of understanding quite what dyslexia is for your child. They are not sure what the effect would be to tell your child about their diagnosis. After reflecting on the decision not to tell the child who is dyslexic, parents often come to a decision yes or no.

• How do you feel
What do you feel when he learns that his son has dyslexia can affect the decision not to tell his son. Understanding your emotions will affect the way you tell your child and help your child.

• A child with dyslexia
Just in time is a factor that must be taken before saying to his son who is dyslexic. Reacts some children differently to the news, you’re the only one who knows when it’s time to tell his son.

As mentioned earlier, there is no right or wrong to tell your son who is dyslexic. You may decide that you do not tell them until they are mature NOK to understand exactly what it is and how it helps. You also have the right to say when you discover that your child is dyslexic so it is already known from the beginning why they have learning difficulties.

Dyslexia is defined simply as a type of learning disability that can be observed and seen in person as soon as your

preschooler. Its more specific definition is broader and is a disorder with a neurological basis. People who suffer from

these difficulties in the recognition of the experience of disability and the ability to speak in terms of speaking, reading

and spelling. Although there are some shortcomings which are mainly characterized by reading difficulties, symptoms of

The definition of dyslexia is to deepen the symptoms that show people who suffer from learning disabilities and in different

age groups. Dyslexia Symptoms vary widely in different age groups. Children who have disabilities, said learning in preschool

are often seen with significant delays in speech development and is far behind in learning new words. Young people who suffer

from dyslexia can also be seen with a mirror to write the letters are often written in inverted form. And because of these

problems for the development, pre-school children with dyslexia have trouble dealing with words that rhyme in particular have

often mentioned in songs for children. On the other hand, children who are already on their years of primary education is

very poor reading and spelling performance. Even worse is that these kids can not see significant differences between letters

and words, simply because the organizations of the word space is not yet ready for them.

Symptoms of dyslexia in people who are in high school years and is often not perceived by those around them. This is simply

because people with dyslexia in this age group is already able to hide his disability. In a much broader sense, people with

dyslexia are those who have IQ levels that are below average with respect to age. So far there is still no known cause and

signature of the known learning difficulties discussed. Although dyslexia is often seen as a result of various disease

states, has a number of theories have been formulated by health experts and scientists to answer closest to the problem.

These theories include the acquisition of brain evolution, the magnocellular deficit theory of naming speed and the double

deficit theory, visual perception, the hypothesis of the exclusion of noise, the phonological deficit theory, the theory of

rapid auditory processing theory Visual. Although these theories have several different definitions, most of them

significantly related to the central nervous system.
