Narcissism: Self-love and The State of Nature

by R.W.Rummery in Sexuality, April 20, 2011

The key idea of Freud’s ‘Theory of Narcissism’ implies a continuity between ‘normal’ and ‘pathological’ mental attributes; Secondly, narcissism has its own line of development that defines individual identity and psychic adaptability. Thirdly, a theory as Narcissism is of philosophical significance because it posits a theory of the regressive or progressive functioning of the (contemporary) self. Drawing on Hobbes and Rousseau’s conception of a ‘state of nature’ I argue that a civil society is an attempt at controlling conflicting desires such that one feels entitled to freedom. Hobbes’ Leviathan argued that a ‘social contract’ involves tacit consent to surrender freedom to an absolute ruler who is obligated to protect people in the “war against all” that is the “state of nature”. Hobbes state is like a great artificial monster, a ‘leviathan’ constituted but not predetermined by the indivdual’s freedom to choose or refuse cooperation.
