An Existentialist Approach to Career Development in Victims of Domestic Violence

by Mama Heartfilled in Work, December 20, 2008

Existential counseling integrates well with career counseling for victims of domestic violence. It emphasizes the responsibility of freedom, the value of choice, the anxiety that comes with wrong choices, such as the choice of abusive partners, while prompting the search for love and meaning. Career counseling is also a search for meaning in the lives of victims. Clients are seeking peace in their lives, as well as fulfilling employment where they will have economic stability. The counselor assists in the search for a better life, including the career development aspects of it, while confronting the ineffective behaviors, such as remaining in unhealthy relationships. Counselors encourage them to take responsibility for their own lives, which is consistent with the goals of career counseling.
