Here are some Midterm Exam and Level Up test comments that I compiled for ESL teachers.

MIDTERM COMMENTS:

FLUENCY:

You have improved with your pronunciation. You just slip on some letters like R. L and Th. Practice reading aloud to yourself. It is a good way of improving your pronunciation.

ACCURACY:

You also have improved with sentence construction. You can make simple and good sentences. There are sometimes when you forget the correct subject-verb agreement. I know you will be better if you will practice.

OVERALL PROFICIENCY:

I was impressed with your use of good expressions and advance vocabulary words. You really need to practice some more so that you wont lose the skill. You have a very good intonation as well for you were lively and understandable. Pronunciation needs to be fine tuned a little especially with the L sounds. Your grammar was alright but you could do better thru guided study with a teacher. Good luck!

FLUENCY

Your pronunciation remains understandable with some Korean accent and intonations. You manage to answer questions with some pauses in varied lengths. If you understand the question, there is just enough intervals between the question and your answer. However, if you don’t understand the question well, you take some good time before you give your answer. Take time to familiarize yourself with the various English sounds.

ACCURACY

You can easily follow pattern sentences. You have a good listening comprehension skill that allows you to easily acquire a new knowledge. More exposure to the English language will help you to a faster improvement in your English skill.

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

You’ve been a very good student during the past month. You’ve always demonstrated a good attitude during your class. You’re smart and a fast learner. Continue to satisfy your hunger for more knowledge by constant practice and exercises. Keep up the great job!

FLUENCY

Well you did a good job today _____. As I’ve said before, you were vocal in expressing your own opinion. However, just make sure that you’re conveying your ideas in a nice way. Keep it up!

ACCURACY

I could see that you were accurate in answering the questions and giving the sentences today. Your sentence in the pattern was correct. I could see that you have more potential in giving broader and deeper sentence. You were very versatile and you comprehend well. You could catch up the instructions easily so we finished the exam successfully.

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

I was able to see the effort that you exerted in order to express and open all your ideas without any boundaries at all. You were expressive about your concerns and would never give up trying to convey what is on your mind. As to this aspect, I would suggest you to still pursue studying even at home.

FLUENCY:

The student was able to pronounce the words clearly and correctly but he still needs more practice. He was able to give me nice sentences right after I gave him the pattern.

ACCURACY

The student was able to give me nice sentences using the patterns that he learned. It means that he really understood the past lessons that he had although he must be careful to avoid some grammatical flaws.

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

The student did his best on his Monthly Midterm today. He was confident during our discussion. It would be better for him to read more English books or watch English programs to further improve his grammar and pronunciation skills. You can do it!

FLUENCY

Well you did a good job today . You were able to follow with our Midterm Test. You took some time to answer key expression but you still managed to give your answers. I didn’t have any hard time understanding your words because you enunciate the words correctly. Good job!

ACCURACY

I appreciate your struggle in making good sentences out of our patterns. I could say that you could make good sentences. However, there are times that you need repetition to fully understand the pattern. I understand how nervous you were during the test but you have to focus on the instructions well so you could make great sentences. Indeed, I like your efforts and deeds to finish the test successfully.

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

I want to congratulate you for a great job today. I highly commend you for good attitude toward learning. You were very participative and attentive during the discussion. I know that you have a good potential to learn English well so try to gain confidence while speaking. Don’t be shy. It is okay to make mistakes sometimes. I am here to help you so don’t be shy in doing what is necessary.^^

FLUENCY

This area includes pronunciation, proper intonation and articulation. Before we started the midterm, I noticed that you can easily utter words. Your intonation is also in the right place. Nevertheless, Koreans are still used to adding vowel sound at the end of the words especially when they are not familiar. Just keep yourself open to English words.

ACCURACY

The sentences which you made are unexpected because most of them are long. It is good to know that you made complex sentences over simple sentences because it gave you better points.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE:

I can picture out what kind of student you are with your previous teacher. You have been nice and easy to get along with. Your communication skill helped you a lot to grasp teacher’s views and ideals which results to more comfortable way of learning. I am looking forward in using much English with you.

OVERALL PERFORMANCE:

Even though I was not your teacher during your past discussion, I can picture out what kind of student you are with your previous teacher. You have been nice and easy to get along with. Your communication skill helped you a lot to grasp teacher’s views and ideals which results to more comfortable way of learning. I am looking forward in using much English with you.

FLUENCY

Well you did a good job today. You were able to follow with our Midterm Test. You took some time to answer key expression but you still managed to give your answers. I didn’t have any hard time understanding your words because you enunciate the words correctly. Good job!!

ACCURACY

You did a good job today. As I have mentioned today, you can secure a good conversation by making rather quick replies to some of the questions I have thrown. You do have the ability to pour thoughts in quality and simple sentences. You were very active student and I really appreciate the effort that you are doing. You could follow with the pattern drills in our midterm test. You could construct good sentences. Congrats!!!

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

I can say that you are really a good student. You prepare with the lesson and I really appreciate that effort of yours. You did a good job in our Monthly Midterm Test. You almost knew all the key expressions and that was great. I just want you to practice the correction listed above. I hope we can have a very nice class next time. Thank you for time. Till then.

FLUENCY

You showed how comfortable you are with the simple vocabulary words. Just focus on the sounds which you sometimes fail to pronounce well and never forget to deliver the lines in their right intonation. As days passed you had always been consistent with your pronunciation. You were always clear, although with a little of the Korean accent. There were some filler at times especially when you were groping for words to say.

ACCURACY

Today you made a good number of simple sentences but still with some minor errors. I had to remind you of the rules once in a while but basically you understood the right word order. You could try to experiment on speaking new sentence patterns to have more ways of expressing yourself.

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

Your perception is good and you really have the capacity to interpret the lesson easily. The way you have spoken the language is really good but I still want you to develop more by pronouncing the right sound correctly and of course speaking loudly would enhance your self-confidence. You also know how to organize your ideas in mind. Comprehension will always be needed to enhance so that you will be able to speak up your mind and you will be able to think fast and answer the questions correctly. Continue to practice so that you will be able to enhance your skills more. Keep moving forward!

FLUENCY

The pronunciations of the words went on clearly but try to focus on enhancing your vowel sounds. This may pose some misunderstanding so try to practice on this aspect.

Practice:

> finished- /finisht/

> available- /uh-vey-luh-buhl/

ACCURACY

There were times that you jumbled words which will definitely change the thought of the sentence. However, you see to it that the listener will still get your point. Keep on practicing the language to improve more.

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

I really appreciate your effort constructing your own sentence using the pattern that we had learned. You were very active and I could sense your eagerness to learn the language. However, the need of learning vocabularies and expressions are really essential for further improvement. You could still improve more if you would continue your persistence and sheer determination to learn.

FLUENCY

You have shown the ability to use new expressions when greeting and communicating with the teacher. I appreciated it when you make responses thru complete sentences although at times you have encountered difficulties in its construction. Yes, there were minor pauses but this can be eliminated thru constant practice.

Practice:

> watched- /watcht/

> back

> museum

ACCURACY

This is one aspect that you should be more focused on. Well, yes you can make simple sentences but there is a need for you get a good grasp of advance vocabulary words and play them into better sentences. You may still need more guidance when it comes to properly make correct sentences but do not worry for I would help you on that one.

> I took my friend’s birthday party…(x)- I attended my friend’s birthday party…(/)

> I’m very scare…(x)- I was very scared…(/)

> have + something + past participle

Ex: where can I have my computer repaired?

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

I know that you have more in you to show so get that confidence going for you. Just continue hitting the right notes when it comes to your pronunciation. The Korean accent will be something that you could eliminate in the future if you would continue to study and practice. I appreciated your endless diligence in learning the language and this would help you soar into greater heights. God bless! Have a great day!

FLUENCY

You did well today. I could say that you’re very conversant and confident enough to express yourself. I just want you to practice pronouncing your s and z sounds. I like your intonation today. Keep it up!

ACCURACY

As I have mentioned today, you can secure a good conversation by making rather quick replies to some of the questions I have thrown. You do have the ability to pour thoughts in quality and simple sentences. Keep it up.

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

You never fail to capture the listener’s attention. You were also eager to share your personal experiences related to the topic. And good thing, you were able to maintain a good interaction. I would suggest you to stay your hunger learning new words and expressions. Those could enrich your skills. Never lose your eagerness to lead any types of discussion. Anyone will be fond of talking with you. Keep up the good work!

FLUENCY

You have gained considerable knowledge and developed basic communication skill. However, you still need to practice some words. Do some practice drill regularly.

ACCURACY

Your sentences and phrases are fair using English grammatical structures but sometimes you still commit grammatical inaccuracies. Anyway, you already aware and can overcome some difficulties and mistakes.

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

You have been a nice student and you always try your best in every class. I just want you to learn more vocabularies and expressions. The more words you know the greater will be your capacity to listen. You’ve got a good comprehension that enables you to communicate freely. Nevertheless, you should develop a rich vocabulary. The bigger your vocabulary, the greater will be your capacity to absorb and assimilate the complexity of thoughts. You should also remember that listening is not only the most important. You also have to speak up your mind and make your stand very clear and you have made it. Practice more in making good quality sentences. Keep it up!

FLUENCY

You can further enhance your communication through proper articulation. To convey emotions appropriately, you must vary the pitch of your voice. Observe distinction of sounds. You were able to express and construct your thoughts clearly.

ACCURACY

Your knowledge in sentence construction was reflected by the statements that you made today. I encourage your to learn more words to help you express yourself in more specific ways. Your words were clear. All you need is polishing. So, all in all, I can say that your performance in every day’s class is okay.

FLUENCY

It is time for you to concentrate on improving your pronunciation and intonation and you need to practice speaking more naturally. My suggestion is to listen for some materials for natural pronunciation and intonation.

ACCURACY

Please pay attention to the teacher’s corrections carefully and try to speak in grammatically correct sentences.

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

You manage basic conversation well but often pause when you explain detailed situation or support opinions and sometimes unable to express yourself fully with your limited vocabulary. It is time for you to focus on enlarging your vocabulary. If you encounter new expressions everyday and just pass by them, your English level will stay the same. You have to memorize those expressions before we move into next level. I believe that you can do it, just study harder!

FLUENCY

You could interact with me about the daily life. You could even generate some topics to talk about. As you are confident in conveying your thoughts, I’m comfortable in bringing up any subject in every discussion.

ACCURACY

You are doing a great job with your sentences. Your having good grasp of English vocabulary and you were able to apply it in every discussion. Keep it up!

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

I don’t much problem communicating with you. In fact, our daily conversation runs smoothly as you are very attentive and active in our discussion. Just remember that regular study is a key to success in learning a language. It is easier to study a little each day instead of trying to study several hours only one day a week. Also, studying a little each day makes it easier to review what you’ve learned and remember new things. Keep doing well in our class!

FLUENCY

Your pronunciation is generally comprehensible. You pronounce most English words well. Your intonation is already good but you can still improve it. Study more complex words and review basic vocabulary.

ACCURACY

You were really attentive and interactive throughout the class. There were slight lapses in your sentences that you have to work with.

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

You already know how to do basic conversation. And I am appreciative of your resolve to become skilled at speaking English. You keep your focus in class and you maintain a good attitude in all our discussions. You are already familiar with easy vocabulary words and basic idiomatic expressions. And so, it is time to spread your wings and master new territories. You are a smart student and with more exposure, you will definitely be on the right track. Keep up the good work!

FLUENCY

There is spontaneity in your speech. You speak in a natural way and it is good. You will just have to keep a constant practice so you can maintain and further improve.

ACCURACY

As I have mentioned today, you can secure a good conversation by making rather quick replies to some of the questions I have thrown. You do have the ability to pour thoughts in quality and simple sentences. Keep it up!

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

Having conversation with you has been worthwhile because you were just one person who just knew how to elaborate answers. You could share interesting details about certain topics. This could yield your skills because you were never afraid to do your best at all times. On the other hand, I hope that you could include intonation when you express your thoughts. You were open to corrections.

FLUENCY

You showed how comfortable you are with the simple vocabulary words. Just focus on the sounds which you sometimes fail to pronounce well and never forget to deliver the lines in their right intonation. As days passed you had always been consistent with your pronunciation. You were always clear, although with a little of the Korean accent.

You could try to experiment on speaking new sentence patterns to have more ways of expressing yourself. I have some sentences for your practice:

OVERALL PROFICIENCY

Your perception is good and you really have the capacity to interpret the lesson easily. The way you have spoken the language is really good but I still want you to develop more by pronouncing the right sound correctly and of course speaking loudly would enhance your self-confidence. You also know how to organize your ideas in mind. Comprehension will always be needed to enhance your skills more. Keep moving forward!

FLUENCY

Your pronunciation was still okay. You could pronounce the words correctly and clearly. The most important thing is that you’re keeping all the lessons that you’ve learned. I like the way you’re correcting yourself whenever you commit some errors. It pays a lot to have a good listening skill to catch up the sounds well. However, please be mindful with the additional sounds that you tend to make. Please study the following words:

ACCURACY

You did great in making good and clear sentences using our pattern. I was also impressed with the way answered the key expressions. Moreover, you did great answering my follow up questions. You never failed in giving me the reason to applause you a lot for a job well done. However, these were very few and I know that you could make it little by little. Just continue in practicing.*^^*

GENERAL COMMENT

You always finished the work successfully. I am glad that you were keeping all the lessons that you have learned. Your tail sounds were decreasing but please be careful with your vowel sounds sometimes. However, I could see that you could cope up with the topics very well. Though you didn’t complete our pattern today you were able to answer my questions well. Please practice more and study the words and sentences that you have to improve.

FLUENCY

So you want to learn Latin? Not sure where to start? You want a crash course? This is everything you need! In under one hour a day, you can learn Latin in under two months!

The Ancient Romans may be long gone, but their language is still very much with us today. There are many benefits to learning Latin. This is an outline of a two month course to give you a good footing in Latin. If you have a formal college class coming up or if you just want to sink your teeth in, this is the course for you. In two months you will be reading basic Latin effortlessly. If done properly, Latin is not an impossible language to learn, but a pleasant one that only requires some effort from you.

The most important thing is consistency. It’s easy to start something and lose interest later. A good way to avoid this is to limit yourself at the beginning. Don’t allow yourself to burn out. If you want to do 30 minutes, only do 25. Keep yourself wanting more. This is very important especially at the beginning.

Preparation

1. Read Learn Latin in 5 Minutes for a quick primer in Latin. It will literally take you 5 minutes. What do you have to lose? This is easy! And no, you don’t need to have ever seen Latin before to read it in 5 minutes the way it is set out here.

2. Purchase Hans Orberg’s Lingua Latina. There are other Latin texts out there, of course, but for a quick jump into Latin you do not have the time to recite declensions for days on end. You want to read it NOW. This 2-month course is based on Orberg’s book, which can be downloaded here.

3. Think about English. You know that there are verbs, nouns, and adjectives in English, right? Language is a little bit more complex than that. Have you ever thought about the fact that “we” and “us” are basically the same word, but said differently depending on context? And making plurals is a bit weird in English also. Most words just get an “s” on the end, like “cat” and “cats”, but other words change a bit more, like “person” and “people” or “leaf” and “leaves”. In Latin, words have their own rules that change them slightly. Luckily, they are quite regular (moreso than English actually!) and you get used to them pretty quickly. Just like when you learnt your first language as a baby, it’s best to start using Latin first and learn about particulars later.

4. Download a Latin-English dictionary. Freelang is a rather good one (it’s free!), but look around and find one you like. A good reference is Whitaker words. These are 85% of all words in written Latin. There are 1400 of them. If you are familiar with these, then you already have a fantastic foundation in Latin. Actually, of the 1400, many are similar to English (e.g. “leo” means “lion”), which makes the actual number you need to learn lower than one thousand.

5. Download the free Fabellae Latinae from Orberg’s website. It corresponds exactly with Orberg’s book.

The Course

1. Listen to the recording for chapter 1 of Lingua Latina while following along the text. Do this two or three times (you will only have to listen once by about lesson 5) to get familiar with the sound and pronunciation of Latin. The recording for each chapter is about 5 minutes long, so this will take 10-15 minutes at first, but only 5 minutes after a few days of getting used to things.

2. Read over chapter 1 more slowly aloud to yourself. Try to guess the meaning of unknown words from context, and use your downloaded dictionary to check. This is the bulk of your ‘lesson’. It will take anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes.

3. Look at the exercises for the chapter. These are generally only a page long, and won’t take you longer than 10 minutes to do. Do them carefully!

4. If you have the time, read the corresponding section of Fabellae Latinae. It will be very easy to understand already, and should only take 5 minutes or so!

5. Repeat this each day with the next chapter. There are 35 chapters. Spend 1 day on each of the chapters 1-10 and two days on each of the chapters 11-35. If you can still get one of the later chapters done in a single day, repeat it the next day for a really strong Latin ability.

Notes

You will initially think of what you read in terms of English. This is perfectly normal when you learn a new language! After about chapter 10, you will naturally stop translating in your head and accept the word you see in its original Latin. This is a good sign that you are beginning to develop some good ability with the language.

Remember to restrain yourself each day. If you find the work easy, don’t rush into the next day’s tasks! Take it slow so you don’t burn out. Work out how much time you are willing to spend each day on Latin and stick to it.

This is an intense course, although it builds up from nothing gradually. If you can get through it, you will be almost at the same level as a first year college Latin student. Not bad! You might want to spend more than 2 months, in which case, spend more time on each chapter accordingly.

Finally… Good luck! Feel free to comment if you want any support or extra tips!

How the English language has come about from when it first started and how it has been shaped to this very day. The English language has come a long way and with the help of other languages.

By Gianni Galioto
The English language as we know it today has gone through many years of changes and multiple different processes. Most words in the English we speak today have been derived from multiple different languages, some old and some new, and are still being produced today. The sounds and pronunciation of the words in Old English slowly changed over time and the lexicon of people have expanded as new words continue to come through by either creating or even borrowing. The English language still continues to borrow words from other languages, mainly Indo-European languages, and expands and interprets them into the language.

Old English, influenced by the North Germanic language Old Norse, is an early form of the English language and was spoken and written by the Anglo-Saxons (Angles, Saxons, and Jutes). The language was a Western Germanic language and was brought to Britain, who at the time spoke Celtic, by Germanic invaders from parts of Germany and Netherlands and started off as a diverse group of dialects. The English language of today was travelled through multiple stages including Old English, Middle English, Early Modern English and Modern English. Approximately 600 years after Old English, the Middle English period started when William the conqueror invaded and conquered England. With him came the French language which later became the language of the Royal Court. The language was then divided by the ‘upper class’ speaking French and the ‘lower class’ speaking English. By the Early Modern English times the language spoken had returned to English but had many French words incorporated into the language.

Towards the end of Middle English, there was a change in the pronunciation of vowels were the vowels started being pronounced shorter and shorter. It was later named the Great Vowel Shift. During this period, the invention of printing meant that people were able to store and read the words in the English language. The first dictionary was then developed. Early Modern English also brought the birth of the ‘Shakespearean’ language of when Shakespeare was born which revolutionised the English language. The final stage in the history of the English language was the Modern English period. The main difference between Early modern and Modern English is the vocabulary due to new technology and objects arising in the modern times. Modern English is the language that we currently speak.

Throughout the history of the English language there were a number of changes made to the phonetics and phonology of the language. A major change was the Great Vowel Shift which happened in the early 1500’s. This included nearly all the vowels in the English language changing. A major phonological change would be the dialects spoken by the foreign languages and the words borrowed from them pronounced in an English way. Other changes were made in the history of the English language which includes Morphological changes and lexical changes. Compounding, Affixation, Conversion, Backformation and Borrowing are just some of the many major morphological processes used for creating new words in the English language. As a natural way of life, many people make up words, some of which eventually end up in the dictionary depending on the popularity and use of the word. This is how the lexicon of the modern English language is able to continue to expand.
The syntax of the English language has greatly changed and it can be observed throughout the sub systems of Old English to Modern English. Not only do words change but also the ways in which the words combine to form sentences change. This brought out the use of Analogies which is a process where a conclusion is reached based on a similar case. A lot of which are seen as ‘sayings’ from olden times which can relate to many modern circumstances. Other situations arose from Old English times where there was a much larger variety of inflections to indicate the plural of a noun in which we are still following these rules today. The main reason for a change in syntax was because of the mixing of Old Norse with Old English as Old English was slowly dying out after being invaded by the Vikings.

The English language has gone through many changes, some seen as good and others seen as pointless, but without these changes the language wouldn’t be what it is today. After many years of borrowing and creating new words, the lexicon of the English language has greatly expanded and has a very large storehouse of words (with the help of deriving words from multiple languages). Its relationship with foreign countries and vast historical events gave the language a diverse set of words that have come straight from a foreign language. All in all, the English language has come a long way, through the many different periods, and will never stop to continue creating new words.

The description made of a dictionary from authority and editor.

It is widely believed that every word has a correct meaning, that we learn these meanings principally from teachers and grammarians (except that most of the time we don’t bother to, so that we ordinarily speak “sloppy English”) and that dictionaries and grammarians are the supreme authority in matters of meaning and usage. Few people ask by what authority the writers of dictionaries and grammars say what they say.

Let us see how dictionaries are made and how the editors arrive at definitions. What follows applies, incidentally, only to those dictionary offices where first-hand, original research goes on-not those in which editors simply copy existing dictionaries. The task of writing a dictionary begins with the reading of vast amounts of the literature of the period or subject that is dictionary is to cover. As the editors read, they copy on cards every interesting or rare word, every unusual or peculiar occurrence of a common word, a large number of common words in their ordinary uses, and also the sentences in which each of these words appears.

To define a word, then, the dictionary editor places before him the stack of cards illustrating that word each of the cards represents an actual use of the word by a writer of some literary or historical importance. He reads the cards carefully, discards some, rereads the rest, and divides up the stack according to what he thinks are the several senses of the word. Finally, he writes his definitions, following the hard-and-fast rule that each definition must be based on what the quotations in front of him reveal about the meaning of the word . The editor cannot be influenced by what he thinks a given word ought to mean. He must work according to the cards or not at all.

Its happening at an alarming rate.

Over the years, the majority of English speakers have all noticed subtle changes in the language. However, it has become quite apparent that people really don’t care too much that the language that we’ve all grown to love is forever changing, though it seems as if it may be changing for the worse. Don’t believe me that things are changing? Think of the word “gay” for just one moment-what do you think? Thanks to modern connotations, a word that meant happy just a few years ago now represents the homosexual community. I’m actually quite alright with slight variations in words, as connotatively, any word can mean anything to any particular person, so this really doesn’t bother me all that much.

What does bother me, though, is when I walk down the street, ride a bus, go to school, or even get on the computer, I see and hear the English language get slaughtered. We’ve all seen it: Simple words get abbreviated to the point they are almost unrecognizable. It’s almost as if we are to learn a new code for the English language just to keep up! Log on to Facebook right now, or any other social networking site, and just read the status updates of some of your friends for just a moment. Notice anything peculiar? People are beginning to write numbers in with their words to shorten them, they are using symbols to make the words have more meaning, and they “be talkin’ lik diz pho no reasun,” even though we all know that they went through school like the rest of us. What pains me the most is that this is becoming more and more widespread.

It used to be that the type of conversation listed above was actually considered a dialect of the English language, but today people will talk like that to try and act cool, or “gangsta,” as if it is cool to completely destroy a language well over a thousand of years in the making. Language changes all the time, but it isn’t often that languages degrade from something so proper, as it was even 40 years ago, to what it is today. I don’t really have a problem with slang, since all languages will have it, but it is when slang becomes a part of normal conversation with strangers, candidates running for office(referring to questions posed towards delegates from the crowd), or people talking in the work place, that I have a problem with it. Chances are, if you wouldn’t talk to your mother that way, you probably shouldn’t talk to the rest of the world that way, either.

I guess you could consider me old-fashioned at times when it comes to language, since I tend to try and follow much of the English language from years ago(anywhere from post-Shakespeare to pre-60’s), but it still irks me when I see just how bad it is getting in the area that I live. I do blame some of the music that is coming out on the radio nowadays, since you hear more people singing along to it, not having a problem with the way the people are talking. I also have a problem with the over-use of cursing in modern English. I find it useful to curse every once and a while, it may relieve anger and stress in situations that warrant their use, but when they are used in regular conversation like any other vocabulary word that they lose their power. Personally, in my mind, people who curse too much actually seem dirty, and come off as a bit trash. I could rant on and on about how much I dislike the changing English language, but I think I will give you all a break. I will just end with this: I am fearful of where the language will be in the next 30 years. I fear that books, neigh, new Ipods, Kindles, or Nooks of the time will have books written completely in the fashion I stated before. Guess I’ll just have to stick to the classics after all. If you have any comments, concerns, or opinions, please feel free to comment, and as always, thanks for reading.

There are many conservative and more advanced methods in teaching languages especially English language when it is taught to new or mid-level learners.

1.Selection of topic:

Before starting an activity, it is beneficial to take a survey to know the overall likings and disliking of the students so that the teacher may select a topic of interest for students. e. g if the teacher observes that the majority of the students like sports, he/she may start the first lesson on sports.

   2.Duration of activity:

The total duration should not be so long that the students lose interest and become non-participative. I find that short breaks and some sentences of jokes have a very positive effect on the student’s involvement and interests.

   3. Preparation of the teacher:

A teacher must have a good command on all the aspects of the activity. He/she must be well prepared to guide and explain the topic and answer the all the questions satisfactorily asked by the students.

  4.Teaching aids:

These are very helpful in creating interest and understanding of the topic. Use of charts, diagrams, a short video clip, or even a newspaper headline will have a very beneficial effect and stimulate the students to take active participation in the subject/activity.

5. A teacher should make the activity a “Process” rather than a “Product” based by encouraging rehearsal especially with role- plays.

6. A teacher should note the weak points of the students but should not over-correct them, try to keep a low profile, and shouldn’t do the corrections very instantly i. e he/she should do this after the activity is over. The students will feel more comfortable to contribute rather than having a fear of being corrected again and again.

7. Provide feedback (positive):

A teacher should tell the students their performance. He/she should tell their mistakes and discuss with them their weaknesses. He/she should focus on the improvement of their performance rather than highlighting their mistakes i. e not a negative feedback.

A strategy for self learning in four basic areas to access bilingualism.
By Geneviève de Temmerman, lexicographer, author and publisher of dictionaries and textbooks bilingual professionals.

THE MYTH OF TOTAL IMMERSION

It is possible to learn one or more foreign languages, self-taught. Self-training is very common practice in Germany, Denmark and in many other European countries, where French tourists are usually surprised that even the taxi drivers and porters of smaller hotels speak English.

Similarly, if you travel to Russia, you will be surprised to learn, when speaking with your guide, he has never set foot in France. Yet he speaks fluent French. This calls into serious question “the myth of total immersion”, so-called vital for learning a foreign language.

The logical sequence of learning a language

You agree no doubt that language is spoken before being written. It is primarily by ear, by listening and repeating sounds, all children of the world are beginning to learn their mother tongue. When you can talk, you learn to write, then we study grammar. However, in France, the English teaching focuses primarily written.Intellectualize it, then we try to speak timidly. The result speaks for itself.

The obsession with grammar causes a crash: how dare speak English society when every sentence, you realize that there is one, even two or three errors in syntax? Focused on the idea of speaking proper English, we forget that it is primarily to communicate.
”I have not the gift of tongues!” This preconception results from the paralysis caused by a learning order reversed. Why on earth would you not good at languages? You speak French without stammering? So you can speak English without hesitation! Just approach the English Language the same way that you do in French, by the ear, starting with being lulled by the sounds, having fun at play, then to understand them and use them wisely . Writing and syntax will be explored in due course.

The importance of regularity

Numerous studies have shown that it is much more efficient to do ten minutes of English every day rather than embarking on an accelerated learning for 15 days. Intensive courses offered by many institutes are of interest only if they are followed by a regular, per copy from the perspective of a transfer abroad or of a position in which you will have to maintain frequent contacts with English speakers.

If this is not the case, you can improve your spoken English quickly and well, without leaving home and without breaking the bank. You have, indeed, several allies and the first four are absolutely FREE!

FOUR FREE ALLIES TO IMPROVE YOUR ENGLISH ORAL

Your motivation. There is no miracle method to learn English, let alone to learn the piano or singing. The charlatans who promise ‘English without difficulty, seek your money and abuse your credulity. But if you’re really committed, you will succeed without spending a penny.
Free resources on the Internet. They are legion … the good and the worst! You’ll find my recommendation on this end of the article, I keep it in icing on the cake because it is a real treat. However, even the free quality has its limits, the first being that you can not go river to a computer all day. In any event, I strongly advise against sites, blogs and forums that offer only written English (no interest if your goal is to learn to speak English), as well as sites that attract users with the poor quality audio. These are loss leaders, primarily intended to hang the client to the sale of other products.
Television is your most valuable ally. Choose movies in original English version at least twice a week. Initially, you will probably need to read the subtitles in French, but you will find yourself gradually to do without.
If your TV package does not give you access to enough movies in English, you can, for about 10 euros per month, subscribe to the posy “Cinema” offered by Orange. This package gives you seven or eight additional channels, including TMC, where you will find every night of excellent films in their original cinema club.
Do not get me wrong, I’m not an officer of TMC, much less an officer of Orange! TMC is what I personally found it easier and more interesting to keep my oral English. Lexicographer by profession, I work constantly in English writing and I sorely lacking in oral practice. Films in English that I watched two or three times a week for two months of TMC have revitalized my oral English in record time. I will return to the question of practice and memory.
An alternative to TMC is to capture the British channels free on your computer.
Radio is also a valuable ally. If you have the chance to pick up English and American radio stations (which is not my case at Rambouillet – linguistically disaster area), you choose, depending on your level of English, a chain mainly musical, cultural or general.
Coupled, these two media you open a royal road to perfect your spoken English by himself, without spending a penny and having fun to boot. It would be a shame to miss such an opportunity!

TWO ALLIES PAY that not break the bank

Reading aloud to keep your assets
To the extent that your goal is to improve your spoken English, try to read aloud in English:
    - If your English is weak, choose English comics.
    - If your English is advanced, you read the press and bilingual books. These are rare, so we decided to select two books for you particularly remarkable in which French and English texts are presented in mirror on the pages of French left, face-to-face with the English on right pages. The first volume contains stories by Maupassant vis-à-vis their English translation, the second is a collection of short stories of the masters of French literature (Voltaire, Gide, Camus, etc..), Also vis-à-vis with remarkable English translation.
Each includes a brief new introduction to the author, a glossary and explanatory notes in French and English.

Both books are pearls for English teachers, students and anyone wishing to maintain or improve their knowledge of English while remembering the texts of the great masters of French literature.

Audio products to store the setting
To become an automatic process to properly speak a foreign language, the use of audio equipment is essential. CDs have the advantage that it can be copied to portable players that you can listen again in your car, in the subway, while walking or while cooking. Why “loop”? Because the objective here is to store the setting. It is therefore important that you hear the same phrases in a repetitive fashion so that they create conditioned reflexes in your subconscious.

There are also market many generalist publications of excellent quality. The most important point when purchasing an audio development in English, is to choose a product that you can listen anywhere without needing to dive simultaneously an explanatory method that you would go back to square one (intellectualization, grammar, and blocking inhibition).

TIPS FOR USING THE PRODUCTS AUDIO IN ENGLISH

    First listen: relax!
Start by listening to a chapter or two as you are lulled by the sounds. Do not you tense up trying to memorize. Just let your subconscious to absorb all sounds English. This method called learning speed is very effective in the first phase of learning.
    A chapter at a time
After the first listening sounds, you’ll go to the learning phase. Do not burn the steps above! By listening to each chapter in a loop, you memorize more easily sentences becoming longer and you will adopt spontaneously the proper accent.
    Rehearse out loud
Do not make the mistake to intellectualize. It is essential that you repeat out loud as often as possible to train yourself to produce the sounds and intonations English. This is not a written exam as you prepare, think about it!
    Listen to yourself speak English
In doing so, your subconscious will create reflexes that will help you soon to express yourself without hesitation in the language of Shakespeare. Have you noticed that in theater, some actors pose a hand on his ear as if to hear better? This is simply to listen to the resonance of their voices. Take the test to listen to you speak English.
Play the game! Repeat your texts before a mirror and play comedy imitating the actors who play the scenarios on your CD. Imitate them will help you overcome your inhibitions when you need to speak English, especially for a job interview that deserves a methodical preparation both of the strategy in terms of language.
Memory works like a muscle, it must maintain. Also, remember to regularly replay chapters you have stored, such as falling asleep at night. The method has been proven.

ULTIMATE RECOMMENDATION

Put your pride in your pocket and speak English without complex. No one will recognize your small syntax errors. The Anglo-Saxons are the more tolerant they are accustomed to hear their mother being abused around the world. Do you think that the ear of an English, French accent is worse than a Chinese or an African accent? The world speaks English. Why not you?!?

THE SITE OF THE ENGLISH FREE THE GAME: BBC

The best free site to learn to speak English is undoubtedly the BBC. You’ll see hilarious videos, British humor is cleaner and an Oxford accent irresistible!
Appointments, for example, on page http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/learningenglish/radio/specials/1246_videoenglish_11/
I urge you to browse this site and spend 30 minutes per week learning module.

HOW LONG you speak ENGLISH?

It depends on your current level and willingness with which you are willing to take your self-directed learning. If your school is level, you can be bilingual in three or four months by implementing the following strategy:
Two or three evenings a week in English TV. The first will be a little tough, but you’ll be amazed at your fast enough progress, and if you choose good movies, you will also excellent evening!
Ten minutes drive morning, afternoon and evening with an audio CD development in spoken English. By train, by car, in your kitchen … listen loop and repeat out loud as often as possible. Think about it!
Thirty minutes a week on the BBC website to expand your vocabulary.
Readings in English (preferably aloud) to keep your assets

I hope I have convinced you that in three or four months, you can succeed at self
transform your English in a bilingual school that will be a major asset for your career.
Once you have made sufficient progress in spoken English, you just maintain your acquired
and continue to improve your skills by taking part in a thousand and one free activities organized
by anglophones all over France. Internet is full of proposals for volunteer activities. The time comes out of your cocoon and make new friends, of course English.

Cheers!
