I do not know when or how it began but I have loved this language that sometimes it feels like my brain communicates with me using English.

English is only my second language. The first language I’ve learned and used (other than baby language) was Filipino specifically the local dialect Bisaya. During my childhood years, my spoken dialect has its distinct intonation that people from the city used to laugh at. I came from Siquijor so I also have a stong “Siquijor accent”, which is a little akin to the intonation of the people from Bohol. I studied college in Iligan City, where I have met different dialects. Since that time, my “accent” seemed to have a new flavor. Whenever I go back home however, it always amazes me how my tongue comfortably tunes back into its original intonation. I just simply love my own dialect!

Second to my own dialect is English. I do not know when or how it began but I have loved this language that sometimes it feels like my brain communicates with me using English. I started using it since elementary school. I wrote letters mostly in English. There is something interesting about this language that made me so fond of using it especially in writing. I found an old photo I sent to my mother when she still worked abroad. At the back of that photo was my dedication. It was of course written in English. When I recently read it, I couldn’t help myself but laugh. My dedication was a little corny and the grammar was unsurprisingly a little higgledy-piggledy. At least, at my young non-Englishness I attempted to use it.

There was one event in college when I was the department’s representative for an extemporaneous speech contest. It was in Filipino category. Being a first-timer, my nervousness engulfed me that I didn’t notice delivering my impromptu piece in English. Crazy, isn’t it? One contestant left on stage without saying anything so, I became second to the last. One of the judges approached me afterwards and said “you should have won but you’re in the wrong category.”

English is a very challenging language. This was my realization after listening to a toastmasters’ podcast. There are so many things I need to get aware of in order to use this language effectively. There are also dos and don’ts of using tenses, proposition and other words. And the more I use it in my writing, the more that I realize how much I have yet to learn. By the way using “and” at the beginning of a sentence is highly discouraged. I always hear this from my English professors but I keep on doing it.

Another good thing about English language is its being dynamic in nature. It continues to evolve year after year. With these, if I stop reading perhaps I would end up unaware of some newborn English words.

For a person having English as only the second language like me, it is very difficult to express everything using the language. English is a universal language. There are more people around the globe using it than any other languages. That is why, it is very important to continue honing the foreign language that I love to stay connected with the world.

A humorous look at learning English.

My apologies to anyone learning English as a second language, You have my sympathy.

Only in English could a slim chance and a fat chance mean the same thing, but a wise man and a wise guy be the opposite.

Only in English can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell another.

Only in English can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are the same.

You’ve heard of a horseless carriage and a strapless gown, but have you ever seen a horseful carriage or a strapful gown?

Did you know that your house can burn up while it burns down or that you fill in a form by filling it out?

If the human race is a race, why is no one in a hurry to reach the finish line?

Can you tell me why when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible?

Why is it that when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up a story, I finish it?

Only in English!

Consider the Apostrophe:

It’s is not, it isn’t ain’t, and it’s it’s, not its, if you mean it is. If you don’t, it’s its. Then too, it’s hers, it isn’t her’s. It isn’t our’s either, it’s ours, and likewise yours and theirs.

If you think that the homographs of “-ough” wouldn’t confuse you, try wrestling with the following sentence:

A rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough; after falling into a slough, he coughed and hiccoughed.

Only in English!

Why do we park in the driveway but drive on the parkway?

If Olive oil is made from olives, what’s baby oil made from?

If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?

Why do we ship by truck and send cargo by ship?

Only in English!

Still set on learning English? Let’s see if this will change your mind.

Since there is no time like the present, he thought it was time to present the present.

There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row.

The bandage was wound around the wound.

The farm was used to produce produce.

The dump was so full it had to refuse more refuse.

He could lead if he would get the lead out.

The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert.

When shot at the dove dove into the bushes.

Still not convinced? Here are a few more dandies.

To help with the planting the farmer taught his sow to sow.

The buck does funny things when the does are nearby.

Upon seeing a tear in the painting I shed a tear.

The insurance was invalid for the invalid.

There is neither an apple nor a pine in pineapple, no egg in eggplant and no ham in hamburger.

Did you know that quicksand works slowly, that sweetmeats are candies, while sweetbreads, which really aren’t sweet at all, – are meats?

Only in English!

If you are still not deterred, consider the following: English as spoken in the United Kingdom is different from that spoken in the United states, India, Australia and Canada. While Americans can fruits and vegetables, the British put them in tins. As an Englishman said to me once, “in America they eat what they can and what they can’t they can”. In Canada I once heard a boy ask the grocer for “a tin of can milk”!

Since you are still determined to learn English I wish you good luck and Godspeed.

And now as I want to shut down my computer – I have to hit “start”.

Only in English!

Top mistakes done by learners and the lack of their will.

My experience:

The most important thing you need to learn a foreign language – the desire. And no such desire, saying that “this is not a good idea to learn the language,” and such that: “I will learn the language and I can finally read a book quietly in English, without translation to watch soap operas, and not to fall into a stupor when dealing with foreigners. ” The main difference between these two desires is a clear understanding of the answer to the question “why did you do to learn the language?”. Without this understanding, better not even to take up the study.

Then everything is simple: you have to learn grammar and vocabulary to accumulate. But there is a trick: teaching grammar from books, going paragraph by paragraph – is ineffective, and for most is impossible. The reason is that, as a friend of mine says linguist, language is not math – it’s kung-fu. You can read about any number of ways, but one of the training will be more confusing than a year of reading manuals. Also, with the language. Want to learn to speak – speak. Read – read. Write – write.

The same situation is with vocabulary. Learn words in a row on a thick dictionary – it is useless and even harmful. Because after a while all tired because of the fact that nothing will, and the study will once again be abandoned. Much better to take one sentence, read it, write down all the unfamiliar words and see them translated and read again. If the proposal is not clear any grammatical construction – watch it on Google or in the tutorial (you are good books Murphy). Ideally, after the words have a lot on them would be nice to run around at night to fix them in memory, as on the heels of doing so much better.

How to pass the CET test or the College Entrance Exam. Background Information on the Test.

As reported from College English Test, “Originally the test was held twice a year and the maximum score was 100 points. The scoring of CET is as follows: those who have scored a score of CET 4 are comparable to non-English major undergraduate students’ English communicating level. Those who achieve to score a CET 6 level are comparable to the English level of non-English major postgraduates. The test includes listening, reading and writing sections. The spoken test is optional and requires certain points from the written test. Most students score a 4 on the test due to their minimal exposure to an English speaking environment. Some score a 6 and those that score an 8 most likely become English Teachers in China. Students generally like to take extra tutoring classes to help them pass the test.

Some changes are made to the CET was reformed in 2005. The changes that were made include the reordering and reorganizing of the sections to include more listening and spoken sections. This would make it harder for students to get a good score because most Chinese students score poorly on speaking and listening sections. They have minimal exposure to native speakers and few chances to have live interactions with English speakers outside of the classrooms. Thus, their speaking and listening skills are low. The revised test included a new “Skimming & Scanning” and “Translation” sections. The translation section will also be a difficult for Chinese students. Talking to a friend who has taken the test and failed, I learned that the test is quite difficult even to those that are good with spoken and written English. He had trouble with being able to report back the facts that he heard within the few minutes that were given. After hearing the second part of the story he would forget the first part, thereupon, making it hard to answer the questions that were asked on the test for the translation section. The addition, a new grading system is graded on a curved scale, so that the highest score possible is 710, while the lowest mark is a score of 290 (this means that the tester has finish all questions but even if they are all wrong they can get that score). Furthermore, the passing grades and qualification certificate elimination is added and a more detailed score report on each section. Last but not least the public service elimination: only university students need to take the test.

The CET is an important test because most employers prefer applicants who have the CET certification. The CET test is not only a prerequisite for obtaining a Bachelor’s degree, but also mandatory for university students in China who are not English majors. It is a college entrance exam test. Therefore, high school students need to take this entrance exam in order to get into college. It is crucial to get a good score in order to secure a good paying job.

Learning languages is prevalent in China especially the English language. Learning English in China is very prevalent among college students. There are floods of students who work very hard to ace the exam. They study hard every day and prepare for tests by memorizing vocabulary, listen to recordings, and review lessons. Some even take classes on weekends or hire private tutors for extra help.

The CET also has a speaking test and those who score a 4 or 6 on the test are allowed to take this part. For the most part, many Chinese graduates do very well on the writing but poorly on the speaking part.

On the other hand, there is a special test design for English majors called the TEM. This test is mandatory for English majors. It is mandatory for English majors to pass this test in order to graduate. The test should be taken by the end of the sophomore year. TEM-8 (”Band 8″) is the highest level for English major students and it is advisable for students to take it during the end of their senior year.

There are a few options for English Majors to pass their major’s graduation requirement. If they fail to pass the TEM-4 during his or her sophomore year, they are given another chance to pass the test. During their senior year they can take the TEM-8. However, for those who fail to pass the TEM-8, you get one last chance to retest which takes place in the following year after graduating from college. If you cannot pass it this last time you will be disqualified. Many students try to obtain language training in order to help them pass the test. This can be done through individual mentoring or taking the English learning education classes. Some of the classes are taught in Chinese with English examples to make it easier for English language learners to understand. Scoring a 8 is very rare and would get you a good job. Mo

Some facts on the Vocabulary Requirement are that the CET-4 is 4000 words, CET-6 is 6000 words, TEM-4 is 6000 words, and the TEM-8 is 13000 words (”College English Test“).

Overall, the CET or College English Test is a very important which decides the fate of college students in China. It is comparable to passing the final exam for the foreign language requirement in America. Students in America also have to pass this test in order to graduate for college. Like taking any test it is better to be well prepared and it does not hurt to prepare with a study guide specifically for that given test. The chances are better for one to pass because the study guide has been designed to focus on certain strategies and ideas that are on the test. With the knowledge that students have gained in class and the supplement from the study guides, passing the CET with a good score has been made that much easier.
