Perseverance leads to character and character produces hope. This is the view of Paul in his letter to the Romans. Perseverance helps us to develop right attitude to life. It is a way of depending on providence in matters of life. Nevertheless, when we persevere there is always a reward as we see in the case of this man at the pool of Bethseda.

In Southern Switzerland and Italy, January 5th is Befana’s Day. Befana the witch brings presents and sweets to the children in the night before Epiphany. If this reminds you of St. Nicolas, then that’s no coincidence.
