When I transferred schools mid way through the year, my English class was supposed to write an essay discussing the Holocaust, centered around the book "The Night" by Elie Wiesel. When some people do bad or hurt others and get caught, they may reply the devil made me do it.

In 1993 Robert Thomason and Jon Venables abducted two year old Jamas Bulger and tortured and murdered him. Since then they have been called evil but are they really? Could they just be troubled or are people really born evil?

Do you find it strange that after a killer is apprehended family, friends and neighbors say they can’t believe it. The man or woman was a kind person, not a trouble maker and never in trouble? Why would a law abiding seemingly good person turn to murder, in some cases serial killers? In our culture we accept the view that we are naturally good people. We think of people like Hitler as an aberration who is naturally evil. This way of thinking gives us a reason not to look for evil in ourselves. When someone we know turns killer we are surprised and confused. But people do kill who we thought of as good and kind. We try to think of some explanation of how it could have happened and usually come up empty handed.
