How does a child acquire language?

There are many theories regarding language acquisition but I shall deal only with the most popular one– Noam Chomsky’s theory that the child’s ability to acquire language is derived from a “Language Acquisition Device” (LAD).

The LAD is a “black box” (a reference to the human mind) which contains what he calls the “Universal Language”. This implies that language largely comes from within. To activate this box the child requires access to “input” from the environment which “triggers” functioning. (The environment is everything around the child.) The more the child is exposed to his environment, the faster he learns to speak. When this box is not activated it becomes a “degenerate”- that is, it declines in function or malfunctions.

All this means that the human being was born with a predisposition to use language. The so-called “species-specific” nature of language supports the idea that only humans can be taught real language. A child naturally learns or “discovers” for himself how to use language. He uses innate, intuitive knowledge of language universals to construct hypotheses and to test features of language from the workings of his mind, the “black box”.

Language theorists have failed to scrutinize every conceivable language feature. For example, they found it impossible to explain a child’s unusual language structures like “bye-bye Daddy, “two mouses” (to mean two mice) and so on. They have failed to explain the abstraction, uniqueness, and creativity of individual utterances/sentences. States of consciousness, concepts, and knowledge acquisition are hard to account for or examine.

Language theorists, though, have helped us understand that the child’s language, at any given point, is a legitimate system of communication in its own right; that at any given time the child’s language is systematic in the sense that the child is constantly forming hypotheses on the basis of input ; then testing hypotheses in terms of actual speech.

Regarding the mystery of language and language acquisition Joseph Conrad, in support of Chomsky’s Mentalist Theory, says: “The mind of man is capable of anything, for everything is in it— all the past, present as well as the future.”

Dr. Allen O’Donnell in his book Towards the Primitive calls man’s ability to communicate to himself and to others as part of his “consciousness”. ###

If it is painful, put it in writing, but don't dwell in the past.

I have to admit that I am a person who finds it difficult to leave past things behind.

- A cherished project that didn’t work out the way one wished.

- A job that only lasted for a short while to put us on a loose rope again.

- A relationship that didn’t work they way we expected.

There are many things in our past lives that can hold us back not letting us moving froward.

It is only human to recall our past lives, wondering “What If….” But it isn’t normal to dwell in our past experiences. It is paralysing. There comes a time when we have to exclaim “Enough!”

The time we spend thinking back and recalling is a precious one that we shall never have again. Today is Saturday, but tomorrow won’t be it. It will be another day. It pays to live our days as much as we can.

We keep saying that we have to learn from past mistakes, but do we really do so? I don’t think so. Our relationship fails. We get very upset. We cry a lot and we may even go on a bout of depression. Then, we store it in the back of our minds and we go on living as though we hadn’t had such bad relationship. But did we think about it calmly? Did we ever wonder why it failed? I reckon few people do this, including myself. This is why humans are the ones to stumble on the same stone. If we keep on repeating past mistakes it is because of lack of thought. It shows that we haven’t learnt much.

Many people have had bad, or even terrible, upbringings. But this isn’t a reason to hold us back. When I read Frank McCourt´s Angela’s Ashes, I thought that his was really a terrible childhood. My childhood hadn’t been a good one, but compared to his, mine had been quite a luxurious one. He did the right thing -left them to start a new life, put it in writing to soothe his pain and won the Pulitzer Prize. Ah, that was a positive attitude towards a disgraced childhood.

When someone has a bad experience, be it the loss of a loved one, a relationship that fails or whatever, I always tell them to put it in writing. It helps to come to terms with it and who knows? It may be this compelling story that we all carry on us.

Dwelling on the past? No way! A

windmilll needs running water to work. If the water doesn’t run, it will stop working. So it works for our own lives.

Carl Jung discovered the hidden meaning of the dream language and I completed his research, discovering more. By translating the meaning of your dreams according to the scientific method you will be able to avoid bad events and hidden traps.

The unconscious mind uses images that belong to your daily life in order to give you secret messages that your anti-conscience won’t be able to understand. The anti-conscience is your wild conscience, which remains in a primitive condition and generates mental illnesses within your human conscience. The unconscious mind has to hide the guidance given to you, the human being concentrated into the human side of your conscience; otherwise your anti-conscience will distort the unconscious messages.

These messages protect you from the absurdity of your wild side.

The fact that the unconscious mind uses images that are familiar to you in your dreams is not a coincidence. Your dreams talk about your life, your psychological problems, the world you live in, and everything else that is related to you, the dreamer.

Therefore, the unconscious mind uses images that are known to your conscience in order to give you secret information about what is important for you, and protect you from the craziness that your anti-conscience tries to impose to the human side of your conscience.

Your house in dreams represents your own psyche.

Your car in dreams represents the way you drive your life.

Your mother represents your evil anti-conscience.

Your father represents your one-sided human conscience.

I could give you numerous examples, showing you that familiar people, objects, and animals that appear in your dreams have a symbolic meaning totally different from the meaning they have in your daily life.

You must also notice that your dreams are basically related to yourself. Your dreams analyze your life, your behavior, your past, your future, the person you love, your family, your social environment, and so on.

Now, let’s talk about the snake, the most common dream symbol, and one of the most important ones, even thought the snake is not an animal you see in your daily life, unless you are an exception. I’m going to show you the importance of the snake, so that you may realize how you will be able to avoid bad events through dream translation.

A snake in a dream represents the intervention of divine providence because the dreamer is making a serious mistake for being influenced by his/her anti-conscience.

The snake is the medicine that cures through suffering. The dreamer will face a bad event that will oblige him or her to definitively stop making this mistake.

For example, let’s suppose that the dreamer is too lazy. After seeing a snake in a dream he/she will have to face a bad event that will oblige him to stop being lazy. He may suddenly have a big damage in his house for some reason, which will oblige him to work in order to fix it, or in order to pay someone else for fixing it.

The snake saves the dreamer from worst future consequences. If he or she would continue making the same mistake, at a certain point the future consequences would be disastrous and completely ruin the dreamer’s life. Therefore, the snake represents the bad event that puts an end to a serious mistake in order to prevent worst consequences.

The dreamer of our example cannot be lazy forever without facing serious problems in life.

You should understand the importance of dream warnings, and avoid making mistakes. This is how you will avoid bad events. Instead of facing problems, you’ll prevent suffering for obeying the wise guidance of the unconscious mind.

Now, let’s analyze the meaning of another very important dream symbol:

The cat, which is a familiar animal we see everywhere. The cat in a dream indicates that the dreamer must smarten up. He or she is being foolish and making ridiculous mistakes, or he is not seeing something obvious, that even a child could perceive.

A cat in a dream is always trying to show to the dreamer that he or she must open his eyes and see something that he is not seeing.

The cat can help you avoid being a victim of someone else’s wickedness, or stop wasting your time with what has no chances to be profitable. The cat basically helps you understand something that a smarter person would easily understand in your place, but that you cannot see. If you want to avoid falling into a hidden trap, you must smarten up.

Now that I simplified Carl Jung’s method of dream interpretation you can immediately understand the meaning of the precious unconscious messages. Most importantly, now you can immediately stop making mistakes or stop being foolish, without having to pass through bitter experiences in order to learn your lessons.

Christina Sponias continued Carl Jung’s research into the human psyche, discovering the cure for all mental illnesses, and simplifying the scientific method of dream interpretation that teaches you how to accurately translate the meaning of your dreams, so that you can find health, wisdom and happiness.

The International Science School: Not necessarily nerdy and dry

When you think “Science” and “School”, it seems that everyone would be groaning, and running for the exits, and subsequently the hills, but it’s one of those things which is always better than advertised. Much, much better.

When asked of Peter Tregloan, one of our lecturers, “Will we get to see explosions?” he aptly replied “I hope not. I’ve spent my entire life making sure that things *don’t* explode.”

While it is fun to see things go boom, it isn’t the only thing which is fun, in science.

Granted, I found a lot of topics a little mundane, like the economical side of solar panels, or geophysics, yet, the entire world of science is similar to any other world; full of variety and fun.

What I found most interesting was the Tokamak, a nuclear fusion reactor, nuclear medicine and various medical physics, and lastly, the research which suggests that to help lose weight, one should aim for a more protein skewed diet, than a carbohydrate diet.

It really is awesome that in a few years time, we might have healthier, happier people, running on energy which is powered by nuclear reactions, and yet, doesn’t produce “nuclear waste” as we know it now. The nuclear wastes produced would be similar to those produced in the cores of stars; Helium, and heavier elements up to Iron, all the while producing clean energy.

Though perhaps the best part of the International Science School is the energetic and cheery atmosphere that permeates the school, from the Australians, all the way through the Chinese, and even to the Europeans.

Even one of my quieter friends joined in on the fun, and the sheer exuberance exhibited by all of us, just exploring new frontiers, and trying to make sense of all the new, and exciting research taking place behind the scenes of our lives.

Perhaps the most stressing thing about the ISS is that we as the future generation of leaders, scientists, doctors, scholars, have to inform the public about the role of science in everyday life, and what it means for the future, and for changing, hopefully reversing the degradation of our planet.

It has really been a wonderful two weeks, and I think I can summarise it with this quote from Prof. Harry Messel, founder of the ISS; his personal motto:

“The greatest achievement in life is the pursuit of excellence, whatever the chosen field of pursuit”

I try to break down youth and my experince of one night as an 18 year old.

What is it about youth that is so magical?

What is so magical about youth? If you could bottle youth you would be a happy billionaire! Poets and scribes have waxed lyrical about youth for centuries and put into verse their vision of youth. Not being a poet all I can do is to break down youth into sections and memories. When does youth start and finish? Personally there is childhood which for me finished around 14 or 16 years old.

Youth as it means to me started at 16 and ended at around 22 years of age. At 22 I was engaged to be married for the second time and had a career in the Motor Trade that was starting to come into its own. So breaking that down it would be responsibility that defined the end of my youth and the start of adulthood. In your youth there are so many first time experiences for instance your first alcoholic drink. Your first time of voting in an election may stick in your mind. Perhaps your first holiday abroad was in your youth period.

Losing one’s virginity must be high on anyone’s list of firsts. In youth we will get our first full time job perhaps or go onto further education in a college or university. In youth we feel like we have endless energy and to some extent we do. It was only last weekend I looked at the clock in my lounge and it read 8.00 pm. For some reason I had a flash back to a particular Saturday evening in 1982 some 29 years ago! I will break down the evening and try to make sense of why I remember this particular evening.

I was still living with my parents in London at the time. I was 18 years old. I received a phone call from a few friends to say we were going out for a drink in a pub in Hertfordshire. I remember distinctly having a shave and getting dressed. I even remember what I wore (Please excuse the clothes it was the 1980’s) I wore a white pair of jeans with a white cheese cloth casual shirt. I wore white sports socks and red leather shoes with a small gold buckle! I combed my hair (I still had hair in 1982!) I then put on far too much Paco Rabanne after shave.

My friends arrived to pick me up in their cars. I got into a friends Ford Escort that was highly modified for speed by me previously. From memory there were five of us that night in July. I distinctly remember being very excited about going to a pub on a Saturday night? In later life going to a pub was run of the mill but at 18 it was still a new experience to some extent. I recall the windows were open on the red Ford Escort and we listened to the roaring sports exhaust system as we drove to the pub.

The journey itself was part of the fun. We were cracking jokes and racing the cars amongst ourselves down the dual carriage ways to Hertford. I remember the smell of cut grass and the heat through the open windows to this day. I think the memory is so vivid because I had such a good time. As a group of young lads we had only been driving for a year or so at best, therefore the independence a car gives you was great.

I recall the bright lights of the pub viewed from outside in the pub car park. I remember the doors were open in the pub because of the lovely weather. From the outside I could hear people talking excitedly and music was playing from a jukebox. I could also smell beer or alcohol in the wind. We all entered the pub and we started ordering drinks for all of us. I remember a round of drinks for 5 guys costing £8 only! I was drinking Pernod and lemonade I can still taste the aniseed taste of the Pernod. I felt as though all my senses were on fire. I think in retrospect what I was experiencing for an 18 year old was a near perfect evening out.

I also recall that my friends and I were useless in talking to the opposite sex. There wasn’t one of us that had any experience with women. After several Pernod’s and lemonades I plucked up courage to talk to a couple of girls I remember their perfume to this day I believe it was Anais Anais (very popular in the 1980’s) I of course was rebuked by the girls. I must have mumbled some awful chat up line and returned with my tail between my legs and ordered another Pernod.

I remember being slightly intoxicated with excitement and more than likely by the Pernod! The evening was rounded off with the compulsory take away at around 11.30 pm. I even remember it was Kentucky Fried Chicken; I remember this so vividly as I am now 95% vegetarian through money restraints and boy did that chicken taste good all covered in fat!

I’ve tried to quantify youth and why some of our memories are so vivid? I can only conclude that doing things for the first time must lead to great memories. Also youth is in a way fresh and untried. As a middle age man I wouldn’t dream of going up to two women in a pub with a crap chat up line because experience has taught me they don’t work! There are quite rightly very strict laws on drink driving these days and buying alcohol is very expensive now even in supermarkets let alone public houses.

I all honesty when looking back I perhaps use rose tinted spectacles more than a lot of people I know. This fact however does not detract from my views on youth. Youth is a wonderful thing and if I can quote from a famous film called ’It’s a wonderful life’ there is a scene when an older man is talking to James Stewart and reprimanding him for not kissing his date and the middle age man says,

“Aww youth is wasted on the young!”

I now as a middle age man understand what the guy meant. Enjoy your youth cos it’s a one time only deal.

What do you want to do before you "kick the bucket?" The term took hold as it refers to a list of events, destinations and activities an individual wants to do before they die or "kick the bucket."

In 2007, Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman starred in “The Bucket List.” They leaped from planes, drove race cars, and did many other funny and incredible things before they “kicked the bucket.”

Many people will say “that is on my bucket list,” but they do not have a list written down. In order to make your dreams a reality, get serious about your bucket list. The first step is committing to making a list of things you have always wanted to do. Making an actual list increases the likelihood that you will one day put a check mark by it and fulfill your goal.

Be realistic with your bucket list and ensure that your list is not totally unattainable. For instance, some people may have the resources and fitness to climb Mount Everest, but this will not be possible for everybody. Your list may have all these incredible places to visit and amazing activities to partake in, but sometimes little pleasures can be just as rewarding. Your bucket list should have all that you wish to achieve, the dreams you want to fulfill, and the life-experiences you desire to accomplish.

My “Bucket List” has many things checked and crossed off! If you have a difficult time making your list or coming up with ideas of what you would like to do, see, study or achieve. One suggestion I have would be to ask elderly people about places or activities that they regret not having visited. Or, you can easily speak to older relatives and see what they have to offer. Older people love to talk and they would be happy to tell you a few places they wished they could have gone.

Your bucket list should not be about having the biggest thing or buying the best of something else; rather, it is about experiencing the greatest things life has to offer. Make sure you get satisfaction and joy from your day-to-day life and as you live each day and time passes, check off the things you accomplish. I think you will be surprised how quickly that list shrinks! And, if it does shrink, add more to your list – live life to the fullest and ENJOY…

After working for a company for ten years, I have seen people come and go. From the hard working operators and technicians up to supervisors and managers.

People who once became a part of my life and some I truly treasured and considered my good friends. Memorable experiences we had together.

People that likes to blow things up-(Bomber man), people that likes to sleep –(in General). People who always hangs up (Norwood) and people that always want a day off and doesn’t mind his co-workers (Azkals). Wahgi wagi waghi hihihi 9.5 ako, There are also some co-workers that always have a negative side comment in every thing what we do (Negative Man or NegaMan). Some always ask the News-“Anong Balita?” And even said that are you satisfied with that? “Ok na sayo yan?”.

There are some people that are always happy when make other lives miserable. (Mighty Joey oung), Smell your NG units –(SanBelle), The photography major (Mini-Cam). AAAAAHHHHH – (Garland Green) Little miss Gloria (Con Air). Miss bulok (Left over Raquel). Respect me I’m wearing Blue(Doc).

But there are person who stands out, literally stands out and taking a smoke most of the time. (Monkey and friends). Stand on guard and checking thing up to your underwear (Kap Kap). Performers with built in twitters (Nyorks), and band mates with stutter beats (Pppppppre). But nothing can beat the wonderful words and vocabulary of our beloved worm man.

“Eventually there are some dark times in our lives and there in then true friendship emerges. They are the one who respect and support you even you did something wrong, doesn’t judge you right away and give you advices to overcome problems. This is what true friendship is and I can say that I experience the good and bad side of friendship with in a company.”

But generally it is like a roller coaster ride when we are dealing with different kinds of people. Can experience happy and funny moments, can also have some trials and sad moments. But the important lesson is every experience we had, there is always a lesson to be learned which can make us better persons in the process. Looking forward to many experiences with my friends and even with my foes.

Yesterday while shopping I had an experience I have never had before and now I feel the need to spread it.

I was shopping at Wal-Mart in Carthage, Mississippi. This is really my favorite city in the state of all I have been to. Just the right amount of rednecks mixed with just the right amount of autistic people. Since the age of 15, I haven’t gone into that Wal-Mart without seeing at least one autistic person. Being that I have high functioning autism I enjoy being around those of my own kind. So this makes that Wal-Mart a fun place to me.

For years I would speak to others in the store who I could tell were autistic or whatever. And there was even one kid about three years ago who couldn’t talk, but we could still have fun in the store and after he saw me the fourth time he started recognizing me even. But recently I have stopped having random conversations in the store. The reason for this is that I am almost 22 years old, so when people see me talking or hanging around the autistic kids in the store they may not take well to it. It pains me, but because others believe something like that could be perverted I have to conform to their ways.

But this time was different. I knew this kid was autistic from the moment I saw him. He was actually the 3rd autistic kid I had seen there that day. He was high functioning, but still showed quite a bit of the symptoms. But the new part was that he initiated a conversation with me. We had passed by each other 3 times already and I had already shown him I was like him by fiddling my hands. That’s a technique I learned a few years back. If a person with autism sees you fiddle your hands sort of like they do it can make them feel comfortable and let them know that you are one of their kind. But the third time I passed by him he initiated a conversation with me. It started with “How are you, Sir?”. I could tell right then that he was very social for an autistic, but being high functioning myself I know that is possible, even though unlikely. Since his mother was standing right there and hadn’t coaxed him for initiating the conversation I decided to continue it, telling him that I was fine, and my name was Wilson. I don’t like being called sir really, so I always immediately give something else to be called.

Put simply, it was new to me to have someone else initiate a conversation with me. It is usually the other way around, so it was definitely unexpected. I just wanted to share that story with my readers as I feel it is very interesting. I find it strange that often times an autistic child who may not even talk to family members will still be able to talk to another autistic person.

Breaking into a publishing career starts with free tools and a service to handle that publishing. Most people are creative in many ways but seem to forget that writing about things can sometimes relieve the tension of a situation that disturbs them. Another reason to write is to remember what they have done lately or in the past giving the writer something to remember of value. I used to write great love letters that my most recent relationship partner enjoyed sharing and got involved. But those types of writings belong in the private domains of the relationship.

Now coming on board with Triond is new for me, however I am comfortable of relating to my experiences in many different subject areas .

Online I have several websites that are working but not a cash cow of income and still I have room to improve them without spending any money. While working in different areas outside of the internet I have learned several trades and gained great titles for my efforts outside of trades . Unfortunately my schooling was never really any good but after starting work at 14 I was able to experience positions of good quality and progress up the company structures with ease .

Now with computer literacy and operational knowledge I am by far behind in some of the technologies but have also learned how to rebuild and program computers as well as some office program uses along the way of the 35 years of working . I have even run my own business and tried to implement that knowledge into a different neibourhood after a business management course .

As you can see I have some achievements but feel there is something I need to do in life to gain satisfaction of my endeavors ,however I am uncertain where my path is going . Arthritis has taken a grip to my health and mental stress from my most recent relationship and finances have been a bad turn in my life but here I am on the worldly stage and writing !

There is one thing I am currently enjoying and that is my computer ,I am afraid that if I did not have it I would truely feel lost because I don’t see a point in games or television. I enjoy a walk around Victoria Park here in Kitchener Ontario and a treat of coffee out as well as help my Landlord at other properties he owns and rents out when I can . The financial strain I am enduring has been with me since late 2007 when the Hog Barn I was at for 7 years had to close for several financial reasons . I feel that these life situations are only a set back until the path I seek is fulfilled .

So with that I give you the opening line for publications!

    Derrick Gray.
