All fires, whether they are intentional or accidental, are extremely dangerous and pose a serious threat to people as well as property. A fire can destroy a house and quickly spread to neighboring areas if the conditions are right. Fires are a hazard not only to the individual property owner, but the surrounding community as well. Because of the dangers associated with the volatile behavior of fire, it is imperative to investigate the cause and origin of all fires.

Fire Investigations

When determining the cause of a fire, the investigator must establish if the fire was accidental or intentional. Accidental fires are just as dangerous as acts of arson. Fire is a physical chain reaction, and once set it will consume whatever fuel sources it can. A fire will continue to spread until all fuel sources are consumed or it is extinguished. This means that a fire can spread from a house, to dry grass, to the woods, to neighboring houses, and so forth.

Accident or Arson?

The reason that fires are so dangerous is because they can spread so quickly and they are quite destructive. In order to prevent re-ignition of the fire, the cause must be determined as soon as possible. In accidental fires, the cause must be discovered and remedied. Many accidental fires result from faulty wiring, gas leaks, fire places, and even cooking. A combination of public education and recalls on faulty products can aid in preventing accidental fires. (Goodall & Hawks, 2004)

Image via Wikipedia

Intentional acts of arson must also be carefully investigated. Signs of arson include separate and unconnected fires, intense burning on the floor of the structure, and burned “paths” that may indicate the use of a fuel to spread the fire. (Saferstein, 2009) The arsonist must be identified and apprehended before further damage can be done. In addition to determining the cause of the fire, the investigator must also find the point of origin.

Point of Origin

As soon as the fire is extinguished and it is safe to enter the structure, the point of origin must be established. This area will contain the most evidence, especially if any accelerants or ignition devices were used. The origin of the fire is typically the lowest point of the fire, since fire usually moves upward as a result of convection currents. (Saferstein, 2009) There are many things working against the detective in a fire investigation.

It is essential to begin the investigation as soon as possible, because any evidence remaining will evaporate quickly. The actions of emergency fire and rescue personnel will likely contaminate the scene, so their actions must be recorded in notes. Another thing that must be considered is time; the longer a fire burns, the more evidence is destroyed. (Goodall & Hawks, 2004)

Fires Destroy Evidence

The fire will continue to burn until all fuel sources are consumed; so if it is allowed to burn itself out, there is not likely to be any useable evidence remaining. Fires are difficult to investigate because evidence is destroyed by the fire itself, efforts at extinguishing the fire, rescue and salvage operations, and time.

Despite the difficulties associated with fire investigations, it is essential that all fires are promptly and thoroughly investigated. Fires are dangerous and pose a great threat to people and property in the community. The point of origin and cause must be established and investigated as soon as possible. Once the cause is determined, appropriate actions must be taken to prevent future fires or incidents. Although this is a difficult task, it must be done in order to ensure the safety of the community.

A fire broke out on January 14, 2012 at around 3:30 in the early morning, more or less.

I was awakened by a shrill shout “Sunog” meaning “Fire” so I immediately went out of the room and there I met my husband in the sala. He likewise just came out of his room to see what was happening outside. I went upstairs and saw that it was so bright in the neighborhood. I went downstairs and told my husband that there was a fire. We went outside and discovered that my counsin Dayling’s house is blazing. I made phone calls to my friends in the city but I failed. I was not able to contact any of them. However, my sister Cleofe called and asked me about the fire. He asked if my brother-in-law and his daughter were already awake of which I told her that they were because the lights in their house were already turned on.

I was gobsmacked. I didn’t know what to do. Although, the fire was still on the other side of road of the fourth house counting from our house. I packed my laptop and notebook. Then I went outside to see what was going on. I observed the fire and I thought it was still far from our house. Neighbors were busy fetching water to pour on the burning house and the adjacent little hut. I saw George Fernandez and several people carrying a pail. Rodelyn Samonte, a kagawad also helped considering that her house is just across the road from the burning house. My husband also went there bringing a pail to help.

Then after half an hour, more or less, two (2) firetrucks and the rescue van arrived. I guess after estimating the frequency of the fire one of the firetrucks went back leaving the other truck to do the job. Then after half an hour the firemen’s job was over. Then people around went back to their house and the neighbor became silent.

It can be remembered that less than a month ago, on December 17, 2011 a fire broke out about 500 meters, more or less, from here. Last year, there were two (2) fires that broke out. One was in February and another in December. What must have the cause of these fires? It will remain to be seen as it seems that no investigation was done in the previous fires and I guess for this fire now, there will still be no investigation to be conducted. Or I just miss the news about the investigation.

Blog about a day in the snow, and a fire...

Survival of the human race.

I had a discussion with a friend on twitter last night about how many people might survive should the economy/world structure as we know it end. I had a much grimmer outlook and thought maybe 2% of the world would be able to make it more than a couple days without their coffees or shopping malls. @LianaBrooks on the other hand figured that number might be a touch higher. Turns out she lives in Gator/Snake land and they are both good eating with the right recipes. (Yes she has those too)
My wife and I might not be what you would call survivalists, but we are in touch with what would be necessary to survive in the wild for an indefinite time. I have my own small solar system for back up power, I can build a generator station from a creek or river and could build a home in the woods given some basic tools.
This summer past, my wife and I decided to try and light a fire in the back yard without anything other than a few sticks. It did take quite some time, but in the end we had a small flame going on.

We live up here in the frozen north, aka : Canada, and it does get mighty cold up here. Today we were out on a walk through the snow with kids in tow, and I asked my wife if she brought her flint. (Yes, she has a flint striker, was a Christmas present from last year.) She answered in the positive. (of course)
With a little scavenging around for grasses, and something to use as a decent tinder, (harder to find than you might think sometimes) we had a small blaze going in about 15 minutes. It wasn’t much and it did take a little time to find the right material to get the fire going. In the end however we had a small blaze capable of being more. We didn’t need the fire for any reason other than the practice so with a few kicks of snow it was all but out.
It was a nice little feeling to know that should the need be there, and the easier methods of making fire be unavailable for any reason, we could have a fire for the night, cooking, safety or whatever else we might want it for.

I do know this, should everything in society go in the dumps, my family will at least have a fighting chance of survival.
So what do you think your chances would be to survive if you were given only the barest of essentials?
The clothes you could carry, a basic knife and whatever you could drum up from around you…

Oddly enough it is this same thought that often starts the stories in my head, and on that note…back to my writing!

Oh, in case you didn’t notice dear readers. If you look up on the left and right of this window, you will see a new link for my latest short story as well as a new progress bar for the next one. It is already going way faster than the last! Bad guys (and girls) can be very fun to write.

Merry Christmas all and see you after the holiday!

Exploring the meaning behind the Hebrew word meaning "Peace" with the wish for Peace to be with everyone during this holiday season and always.

Image via Wikipedia

In the Hebrew language, each letter is not merely a symbol, but also has its own meaning, and when joined together to form words, that meaning is strung together with the other letters in the word which give rise to the creation of a complex thought. All within that one word.

Shalom is the Hebrew word meaning peace, which is also used for greetings and partings, as a wish for peace to be with that person.

The first letter, Shin, symbolizes fire, as is evidenced even in its structure which resembles roaring flames.

The last letter, Mem, symbolizes water.

These two elements are normally thought of as incompatable and mutually exclusive and destructive. Fire and water, it is thought, cannot mix. Fire would either singe the water and turn it into vapor, or water would quench the fire.

Here we introduce the two letters that come between the fire and water, or the shin and the mem, bringing them together to form a word.

These letters are the Lamed and the Vav.

The Lamed symbolizes learning and understanding.

The Vav represents the joining or bringing together.

There is actually a term, Lamed Vavnik, which refers to someone who is that special breed of person who is compassionate and thus capable of bringing people together through understanding, achieving peace and harmony, or at least by their mere existence stands between them to prevent harm from coming to either, or as in the stories, prevents the destruction of the world by their very existence.

What this word, Shalom, ultimately means, is the idea that the bringing together of two apparently strong and disparate forces is achievable through understanding, or that understanding and compassion is what keeps destruction at bay.

Thus it is that peace is achieved.

May peace be within you, your loved ones, and all of us in this Holiday Season and always.

Sometimes all of the Christmas cheer, shopping, etc makes us all want to rip our hair out. This guide informs you on how to relax during the holidays.

Relax with Hot Cocoa

There’s nothing better than sitting by the fire on a cold winter day, with a nice mug of hot cocoa in your hands. Sit back, relax, and enjoy peace.

Reminders of Quiet

Remember to remind your kids to be calm, relaxed, quiet, and good during the Christmas season, or Santa won’t bring them presents! A household of quiet always helps the holiday nerves.

Christmas Music

Listening to Christmas will get you to enjoy the holidays. The music may be nice at first, but make sure you don’t listen to it too much, or it may start to annoy you.

Family Activities

Enjoy yourself by setting up some family activities or events during the Christmas time. This may be something like helping make breakfast, setting up the Christmas tree, or maybe something exciting like ice skating. Be creative and make your kids love the season!

Comment

Be sure to comment and include your thoughts and ideas. How do you relax during the holidays, so that you don’t become stressed out over everything? What are some fun activities you and your family do?

A cannonball fired during an experiment that went wrong with the TV show "Mythbusters" had the misfortune of hitting a house in North Carolina, United States, but fortunately no one was injured, the company announced that performed by the program.

The accident occurred Tuesday during a shoot in the testing of the Department of the Alameda County Sheriff, in Dublin, California, about 25 miles east of San Francisco.

The show’s creators and the cannon
“During the trial, a cannon ball took an unexpected path from a security barrier”, said Wednesday the Discovery Channel, which broadcasts the program, in a statement.
In addition to the house concerned, the bullet also damaged a parked car, the network said.
“Mythbusters” is a science show starring special effects experts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman, who perform unusual experiments and sometimes explosive to check the validity of urban myths.
A Discovery Channel representative did not immediately return an email asking what the producers were conducting experiments in the series when he shot the cannonball.
Sergeant J.D. Nelson County Sheriff’s Department, which is technically explosives expert, was present during the shooting, said Discovery. Nelson is an expert in explosives safety standard in the program.
Discovery said that “all appropriate safety protocols were followed” before the incident. We were unable to locate a county sheriff’s representative for comment.

Fire, bomb threats, floods and staff shortages all constitute to workplace disasters.

Safety in the workplace is of paramount importance. Many things can go wrong when dealing with workplace disasters.

BOMB THREATS

Bomb threats should not be taken lightly in any situation. If the bomb threat is received verbally, the receiver should try and detain the suspect and gather more information. Switchboard should be alerted and all occupants from the building should be evacuated.

FIRE

Fire is a big threat to any building. All places of work should have a fire evacuation plan. Fire extinguishers should be readily available and all employees should be trained in using a fire extinguisher and undergo fire and drill training. In the event of a fire there should be a fire alarm which goes off, and all people should be evacuated in the opposite direction of the fire. Superiors should make sure that all occupants are escorted out of the building, and people in wheelchairs and the disabled should be helped out. In the case of smoke inhalation a damp cloth should be used to cover the nose and mouth , and there person should try and crawl on all fours, and try to get closer to the floor.

Terrorist attacks

Terrorist attacks have become a big concern following 9/11. If one is faced with a terrorist attack lie flat, face down on the floor and wait for further instructions.

FLOODS

Go to a place of higher ground.

The steam sale left me with some interesting choices, one of them being this game.

I have spent afew hours trying out red orchestra ostfront 41-45, and I have to admit I am satisfied with the gameplay.

Now before we get into too much detail, I have played my share of run and gun games, so naturally if your a veteran of Red Orchestra or Arma, then you know that I didn’t last too long.

For a quick rundown of Orchestra as I understand it, it is a realistic first person shooter that takes place on the Russian front lines of World War II.

I chose a server that was currently playing a map with a grassland hill environment. I chose the rifleman class, since that was the only one currently available to me at the time. So I charged around and someone who knew the ropes, someone with a sniper rifle took advantage of the moment and within moments I saw my character helmet less and dead on the ground. I clearly did not know what I was doing so I switched to another server.

This time I was put into a ruined city, I was given the option of using a semi-automatic rifle and this time while I did use some self-restraint, and I did get “some” kills, that run and gun habit kept me impatiently running into the line of fire, so naturally I didn’t get a very high score, although my team did win…….. There was a satisfying feeling about stalking the insides of buildings and having unsuspecting Russian soldiers run to their deaths in doorways.

The third server I went to was.. what I believe to be a small custom made map. Now I didn’t have to restrain that “run and gun” urge as much as I needed to on the other larger maps, but it was easier to get more kills by tactically camping than just running around with an automatic.

note: even if you decide to run around with an automatic, you’ll realize that the recoil of the said automatic will make it difficult to actually hit any enemies, even if the enemies are infact 6 feet in front of you.

I got my kills by camping in one space for a minute and then moving to another space. Now for some people this is probably not a fun way to play a game, but for someone like myself I do rather enjoy it.

To conclude… The positives of the game , include realism and the ability to drive vehicles, authentic weapons and roles, plus you do have to realize the setting is rather unique considering I haven’t played many world war II games that focus on the frontlines between Russia and Germany.

One trait that might be considered both positive and negative is that there are indeed one-shot kills. Whether it counts as a positive or negative trait, I’ll leave to the reader.

The negatives include the fact that… yeah you can’t run and gun. Its not an option. This isn’t a Call of Duty game. Your score is probably going to reflect on your patience and endurance rather than your reflexes. So if your a patient person, this game is definitely for you.

When it comes to the safety of our homes or the offices in which we work in, from the threat of fire, we look up to certain equipment or tools which are helpful in providing us with the maximum safety.

When it comes to the safety of our homes or the offices in which we work in, from the threat of fire, we look up to certain equipment or tools which are helpful in providing us with the maximum safety. House fires have become a common subject and every year many homes all around the world fall prey to the ruthless house fires which huff and puff and blow the homes down like the evil fox from the infamous story. They have now become the centre of discussion for many people and these people are constantly looking forward to find better ways to fight against such kinds of house fires.

These methods of prevention need to be very effective and also, very efficient. If you look at recent studies, you will see that in the United States of America alone, homes worth millions of dollars are burnt as a result of house fires. This house fires leave the individual owners completely helpless.

Letís imagine an individual who works a nine till five job everyday and let’s say he is working in order to be able to build his dream home. He has been working for the last 30 years without a break and has been doing so in order to provide his family with the perfect home. After sometime, he finally succeeds in getting his dream home, by re-arranging the finances that he got as a result of different pension schemes and other retirement benefits. Just as he started enjoying the sweet success and the amazing home that he built, one day a tragedy took place which changed everything overnight.

While he and his loved ones were sleeping, a fire broke out in the house and not one of the family members woke up or realized. This is because he didn’t have a fire alarm. As a result of this disaster, the house was burnt and turned to ash in just a few small hours. His beloved daughter was caught up in the fire and unfortunately she could not be rescued. The firefighters informed the family after a considerable delay, that she had become a victim to the ruthless fire. This is not an imaginary story but a story that you will hear about on the news or in the newspapers in every city around the world. With disasters such as these that are widely known about, you would think that home owners would spend more time and money in fire-proofing their house, and ensuring alarm systems were built, not only to protect their homes, but to protect themselves and their families as well!

Therefore, there has always never been a better time to ensure that you have the best equipment for fighting fire in order to make yourself and your loved ones more secure and safe. You need to have the best equipment in the house available so at a time of an unexpected fire, you can at least rescue your family and get them out of the house as soon as possible.

There are many things that are used for the safety of an unexpected fire within your home. We all know about the different things, which can save us in times of a firebreak out in the house. Letís talk about fire extinguishers. They are the greatest fire fighting tool that has been ever created by humans and it is the best thing that we can have in our homes in order to extinguish a fire or at least try to have some sort of control over it. Fire extinguishers can be easily found in many stores and shops and there should be at least a couple of them in your home. They should be hanging on the walls instead of being dumped in the storerooms or cellars! They should be somewhere where they can be easily found and used.

After fire extinguishers, another thing that can help us in taking control over the house fire is the fire alarm. It is the best equipment and a very useful thing that can easily tell us about the fire. There should be a large quantity of fire alarms in your home. There should be a single fire alarm in every room of the house and in the washrooms also. They should be everywhere as to provide you with the maximum levels of safety.

These are just two of the most important pieces of fire equipment which can be used in the house in order to ensure you can not only tell when there is a fire in your home, but also so that you can attempt to put it out, circumstances allowing. You should make sure that this is the minimum level of fire safety equipment that you have in your house to be able to keep you and your loved ones safe! Additional information on fire safety, as well as information on how to become a firefighter can be found at http://www.firefighterstraining.com
