You can catch you dreams.

I want to tell you about my life in the hope it will inspire you to follow your dreams and succeed in getting the things you want in life.

It is perhaps important I point out that I do not come from a rich family or a privileged position in life. I come from an average family from an average town. I have never had money to help me get the things I want in life.

Anyway, let’s get to the main point of my article.

My Dreams

At the age of 17 I fell in love with two things; Dance Music and Writing.

Dream Number 1: My dream and number one goal in life was to become a DJ. And for this dream to be 100% successful I needed to DJ in my favourite nightclub – the club in my local town, which was one of the best in my country.

Dream Number 2: My second goal in life was to become a professional writer – a journalist for my local newspaper or something like that.

What I Did

So I bought myself a set of decks (to play records) and set about learning everything I needed to know in order to become a DJ.

I also enrolled on a media and journalism course in my local college. After college I went to university and studied for a degree in journalism. And for my work placement year I went a music magazine which also ran music events and festivals.

It is now ten years since I was 17 and I am so happy to say I have achieved the Number 1 and Number 2 goals in my life. I caught my dreams.

How I Achieved My Dreams

Remember that magazine I went to for work placement? Well I must have impressed them because when I finished university they asked me to come back and work for them.

I am now a professional writer, writing on my favourite subject in the world – music. My articles appear in newspapers and websites across my country and I should probably be more proud of this than I actually am.

Also, Remember I said this magazine company also ran music events? Well when I joined them after university I had been DJing in my bedroom for seven years. Seven years of hard practice and enthusiasm. So I made a promotional CD, presented it to the people in the company who look after the music events and they offered me a warm-up DJ slot at one of their events.

I must have impressed again because they made me joint-resident of the club on a monthly basis. And because of this I was then asked to DJ in my favourite nightclub thee times – the club where it was my Number 1 dream and goal in life to play.

Now

So at the age of 27 I have fulfilled my Number 1 and Number 2 goals in life. I chased my dreams and caught them. So I just want to tell you all that it is possible. Work hard, take the right routes in life and never give up. People used to laugh when I told them I wanted to DJ in that nightclub. I was someone who went to that club as a fan, how would it ever be me up there playing the music for the crowd? But I did it, and you too can fulfil your dreams. You just have to believe, follow your dreams and never give up…

Never give up and chase your dreams…you can do it

The stigma attached to "living your dream"

Far too often in today’s World, dreams seem to have this stigma attached to them which labels them as something that should stay in the brain and never be given a very serious thought. Speaking from my school life in particular, which ended about two years ago, we would always be told by teachers not to aim to high as we would never make to where we wanted. I remember one day being asked where we would want to be in ten years time, and ambitious/unconventional answers where simply disregarded and labelled impossible and ridiculous. It seems to me the philosophy “make your dream a reality” is no longer a prominent one, instead we’re taught to take the safe option and know our place. I remember having an argument as far back as middle school around about year 6 with a teacher, she asked what I wanted to be when I grew up.. I replied “A Racing Driver” at the time that was my ambition and my ultimate goal, she laughed and said “you can’t be that..” and I said “why?” and she said “because that’s something that will not happen, so don’t be silly” I replied again “Did Michael Schumacher’s teacher say this to him?” once again “you’re being silly now” “No, if that’s my dream and ambition why is it not possible for me to work for it and achieve it, like he did?” her reply “because you’re not Michael Schumacher” and I said “and when Michael Schumacher was young he wasn’t Areton Senna” my point being how could she just regard a kids dream as stupid without even knowing me, it could of been anyone in that room she would of still disregarded it. Could of been Neil Armstrong in that room as a kid, saying he wanted to be an astronaut, it would have just been a stupid dream. The reason I’m writing this is because far to many people look down on people trying to achieve their dream, and see it as impossible and a waste of energy, but if it’s your dream you should persue it until you exhaust every resource, until you lay on your death and instead of saying “what if” you can say “I tried”.

Find your passion and unlock what you truly want to do. How to listen to your own heart.

There is no life without the discovery and pursuit of passion. As the movie Iris once coined, “Education does not make us happy… but it is the means through which we realize that we are already happy.” The facts along the way help to shape our efficiency, but in the end it is ultimately only important how we are changed by them.

Finding Your Passion

There are so many people in the world who are frustrated, who have lost their own dreams, or have fallen prey to their own self-doubt. It sounds like a simple question, but it is one of the most difficult questions we can ever ask of ourselves: “What do you want?” The generic answers are, of course, happiness, security, fulfillment. Anything in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs would fit into the category of generic answers to this question. Close your eyes. How are you meant to serve others? Take out a piece of paper if you must, and write down the things that you love. Write down the ways you most enjoy helping others, and how you can devote your passions into a lifestyle. Come up with a plan on how you can attain these things. Don’t show this list to anybody, unless you really want to. Remember, If people laugh at your dreams, they have likely abandoned their own.

Education

This is the second step on the path to happiness, and also the most heavy obstacle on this list. Many people never get past this one, and cease to continue on in their quest. Now, here is where you really need to close your eyes and open your heart. You have many choices in life, but remember that education should not be ignored. A liberal arts degree can work wonders in a field close to the profession that you feel most at peace with. Trade schools are also helpful. You need to decide.

I’m currently an Anthropology major with a concentration in public archaeology. You would be astounded at how many people have come up to me, scratching their heads, saying “I wish I could do that!” or, alternatively, wondering why everyone else gets the all of the good breaks. I’m always stunned cold in the spot whenever I see one of those responses. First, I can’t imagine doing anything else, and second, anybody can do this. It isn’t more difficult than anything else, but it is a decision that you must make. Archeology makes me happy in the same way that art makes the artist happy. It is just a difference. You must realize that fields such as “anthropology” or “museum studies” (to become a curator) … those jobs aren’t just for “other people.” They’re for you, as well.

Money is always an issue, but do not predicate your life around either obtaining it or letting your life fall to pieces because of it. If you are younger and your parents want you to desperately get a liberal arts B.A. or B.S. degree, try to gently remind them that as long as you have a degree itself, that should be all they ask of you. The rest is up to you.

If they absolutely refuse to fund the degree you are asking, do not abandon this dream, and do not delay your first two years of college. The first two years are primarily cores. Tell them that you will declare after you take your cores. Work summers, apply for work study which pays for your tuition and also gives you some pocket money. Do what it takes to fund your dream, but do not simply say “This is for other people. I’m supposed to make money.” Also, ignore the comments. You will likely be sensitive at this time to people thinking that you are being idealistic. Do not listen. There is always a way if you are willing to find it. Some people work for money, for security, so that they can live their dreams part-time. Sometimes, though, that isn’t enough. Decide.

Becoming a Humanitarian

While in school, or even after, humanitarian work is the key to applying what you have learned. Especially for any Anthropology majors out there, volunteering abroad will supplement your degree wonderfully. Community service is one of the most important actions that we can take in this life, reminding us how similar we actually all are, and also how different. Donating to charity, volunteering, or even playing on Free Rice for a little while will help feed the hungry, shelter the homeless and benefit the less fortunate.

Following Your Passion

Life the life you want to live. Have hobbies, look within yourself to find the way that you can best serve others with your passion. Subscribe to magazines and journals in your field, donate to charities, always think through “failures.” Keep going, never stop for any reason. Always keep going.
