This is my first post, so I am going to describe myself.

Hi, I’m new to Triond, and my name is Daniel. I am 18 years old. I am straight edge, which means I do not partake in drugs, tobacco, alcohol, or sex without love. I have an awesome girlfriend named Miranda. I listen to indie, hardcore, punk, and lots of other types of music. My favorite band is Have Heart. I like to read comic books, and I do like video games. But, I’m not a typical “nerd”. I love playing sports. I like to be adventurous and spontaneous. I’m willing to try almost anything. I like to keep active. I work out, and my favorite sport is soccer. But, I like playing all other sports. I live in West Virginia, and I hate it. My favorite video game is the Fallout series. My favorite TV shows are Breaking Bad, Workaholics, Wilfred, Seinfeld, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Office, and Angry Boys. I don’t watch much TV though, just on occasion. I’m starting college this year and I’m going into the psychology field. My favorite food is pancakes. I love sweet tea. I hate school. I can’t stand rednecks or anyone ignorant. I’m agnostic. My biggest pet peeves are racist and homophobic people. I hate when people are proud of their ignorance. I am very open-minded. I just hope to make something of myself someday.

This has been debated for long periods of time. However, I'm here to provide my own opinions on whether its healthy and how you can make a better lifestyle change!

English: Subway restaurant, 4009 Carpenter Road, Pittsfield Township, Michigan (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

It is a common misconception that Subway, the restaurant is a healthy choice. From the late 1990s to present day, many people believe that by eating Subway is a healthy choice. So is it? The answer is simple… it depends on what you order.

Initial Issues:

The Bread: One of the main issues with Subway is its bread. The bread roughly contains between 200 to 260 calories in total, with choices like whole wheat and white being on the lower side and italian being on the higher side. But, one of the things that many people don’t know is that the healthiest choice of Bread is actually Plain White, not the 9 grain whole wheat. This is because the other bread types contain high amounts of high fructose corn syrup, which is one of the main contributer to calories, and subsuqently fat.

The Meat: At subway, in order to compete with many other restaurants, they offer a diverse assortment of meats to select. Although most seem healthy (like the Assorted collection) for example, many of them actually arn’t. Meats like Assorted, meatballs, pepperoni are loaded with calories and fat, not to mention high amounts of sodium, which is bad for the body.

The Sauces: Nowadays, they have a print out of the healthy and unhealthy choices. But just to reaffirm, be sure to avoid items like Mayo, Chiptole & other ‘flavourful’ sauces. Instead, choose options like honey mustard, plain mustard or ’sweet onion’, although it does kinda fit in the unhealthier choices.

The Extras: Obviously, its important to resist snacks like chips and cookies. Avoid sugared pop, and I would recommend purchasing water opposed to the pop, even the 0 calorie ones. Nowadays, they have Yogurt avaliable, which is always a good replacement for the unealthier snacks.

Conclusions:

So Subway, like most other fast food chains, can be healthy or unhealthy, depending on what you order. The best option is to get a Subway salad, with the ‘healthier’ choices for dressing. For snacks, choose water + yogurt over the other alternatives. Remember, its only healthy depending on what you actually order.

New research finds high fructose consumption affects the brain, learning and memory in short time.

If drinking and eating a lot of sodas, candy and other high fructose-laden junk food doesn’t elicit warnings aplenty, now comes new research to say that stuffing yourself on soda and sweets for as little as six weeks may make you stupid. Duh?

New research has shown how a diet laden with high fructose corn syrup slows the brain, hampering memory and learning. But, here’s the good news; consuming omega-3 fatty acids can counteract your plunge into stupidity.

“Eating a high-fructose diet over the long term alters your brain’s ability to learn and remember information. But adding omega-3 fatty acids to your meals can help minimize the damage,” say the researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The high fructose corn syrup the researchers studied is the common kind typically found in processed foods, including soft drinks, condiments, applesauce and even baby food. The average American consumes roughly 47 pounds of cane sugar and 35 pounds of high-fructose corn syrup per year, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Used As Additive in Foods

The researchers pointed out that they were less concerned about naturally occurring fructose in fruits, which also contain important antioxidants, but were more concerned about the fructose in high-fructose corn syrup, which is added to manufactured food products as a sweetener and preservative.

To prove their theory, the researchers studied two groups of rats that each consumed a fructose solution as drinking water for six weeks. The second group also received omega-3 fatty acids in the form of flaxseed oil and DHA, which protects against damage to the synapses — the chemical connections between brain cells that enable memory and learning.

The animals were fed standard rat chow and trained on a maze twice daily for five days before starting the experimental diet. The researchers tested how well the rats were able to navigate the maze, which contained numerous holes but only one exit. The scientists placed visual landmarks in the maze to help the rats learn and remember the way.

Six weeks later, the researchers tested the rat’ ability to recall the route and escape the maze. What they saw surprised them.

Learning and Memory Impaired

The second group of rats navigated the maze much faster than the rats that did not receive omega-3 fatty acids. The DHA-deprived animals were slower, and their brains showed a decline in synaptic activity. Their brain cells had trouble signaling each other, disrupting the rats’ ability to think clearly and recall the route they’d learned six weeks earlier.

The DHA-deprived rats also developed signs of resistance to insulin, a hormone that controls blood sugar and regulates synaptic function in the brain. A closer look at the rats’ brain tissue suggested that insulin had lost much of its power to influence the brain cells. Because insulin can penetrate the blood–brain barrier, the hormone may signal neurons to trigger reactions that disrupt learning and cause memory loss, say the researchers

The scientists concluded that eating too much fructose could block insulin’s ability to regulate how cells use and store sugar for the energy required for processing thoughts and emotions. They said their study showed that a high-fructose diet harms the brain as well as the body. They advise people to keep fructose intake to a minimum and swap sugary desserts for fresh berries and Greek yogurt. And when you do eat foods with larger amounts of high fructose corn syrup as an ingredient, balance it with foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, like salmon, walnuts and flaxseeds, or take a daily DHA capsule.

Focuses on the growing enchantment of Americans with all things paranormal. Psychic readings; Role of science in the sudden surge of interest in the paranormal; Research on mind over matter. INSET: I was a psychic spy.

Call it the second coming of spiritualism–from psychic hotlines tolaboratory studies on mind over matter, America is newly enchanted by all things paranormal. Why are we taking these magical mystical tours–and are we being taken for a ride?

I conjure you, by that which you profess–Howere you come to know it–answer me.

– Shakespeare

In have always had a secret and embarassing love of psychics. But I’m an unfaithful lover: I wander from one to the next, infatuated and then disillusioned, on the hunt for something I can hardly set a name to. A cosmic compass in this crazy world? My own wiretap on God? Or just the scoop on an old boyfriend?

There have been some uncanny, spine-tingling “hits”–psychic parlance for accurate predictions–in my psychic readings over the years, and just as many misses. It’s the hits that keep me coming back, jockeying between faith and doubt. The moment I sit for a reading, I am admitting a whole starry night of possibilities: that my life has narrative force and heft; that time may not travel in a straight line; that there is sacred order in seeming disorder.

Even stopping by the table of a blue-haired, red-lipsticked tarot card reader in New York City’s East Village, I am on a haft-acknowledged quest. As physician Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Prayer Is Good Medicine, puts it, “I have a passion for psychic phenomena, because they tell us we may have to think in new ways about how consciousness behaves.”

He’s not alone in his passion. As of this writing, Betty J. Eadie’s Embraced by the Light has been on the best-seller list for 93 weeks. Television’s cult hit, The X Files, reels in 8 million households per show. And Many Lives, Many Masters, the book in which psychiatrist Brian Weiss, M.D., describes the benefits of past-life therapy, has now been printed in 17 languages. At California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, Elizabeth Targ, M.D., is overseeing a national study to determine the effect of remote prayer on healing AIDS patients. A previous study showed results that were promising enough to warrant further research.

Even the CIA came out of the closet last year with its abashed confession that the government agency had spent $20 million on psychic research in the last two decades (see “I Was a Psychic Spy,” page 52). Gallup polls show that 69 percent of Americans believe in angels, half believe they have their own guardian angels, and 48 percent believe UFOs are real. Last April, Robert Miller, the governor of Nevada, renamed State Route 375 the Extraterrestrial Highway, supposedly because of the frequency of UFO sightings. Dionne Warwick’s Psychic Friends Network logs 4 million minutes a month at $3.99 a minute and last spring celebrated its 10 millionth caller. Even that wonderful relic of my childhood, the Magic 8-Ball, has resurfaced, reaching record-breaking sales of a million balls a year.

Not that our culture hasn’t always had a mystical bent; think Emerson and the transcendentalists. But why are we now turning to oracles in huge numbers? Who is this new “vast middle-class of credulous neospiritualists”–as Newsweek so aptly referred to them in a recent cover story?

Traveling through the Twilight Zone

As a serial monogamist, I’ve always been able to preserve the illusion that my psychics were better than they actually were. I got to know and like them. Above all–probably like most of us–I tended to sift out and remember only the remarkable moments. There was the time a healer and clairvoyant named Jason Schulman sat across the room from me and without knowing a single fact about my history, described down to the point of a pinhead exactly where pain was throbbing in my body, despite no outward sign to clue him in. There was the morning my friend called me before and after a phone reading with a psychic named Rochelle. He said the first words out of the visionary’s mouth were, “What’s this about Romania?” He and I marveled over the peculiarity of extrasensory perception–it was I who was flying to Romania the following week, not he. Had our talk about my trip that morning lingered around him, in some electromagnetic corona around his head, one that she’d picked up but not precisely?

For this article I wantonly sampled readings–eight of them in a single week—culled from friends’ recommendations, books, and newspaper articles. I followed a reporters’ mandate for objectivity, and so prepared myself by talking to skeptics as well as believers. And, for the first time in my life, even with a glut of readings, I came up nearly empty-handed.

I had never before compared and contrasted readings; but as soon as I did it became clear they were like verbal Rorschach prints, their interpretation dependant on the beholder. They were all different; they could all have been at least somewhat true. Then, because the senior editor of this magazine emphatically de-dared that he was “horrified” to see this subject taken seriously, we assembled a list of simple questions for the intuitives to answer: How many siblings do I have? What does my uncle do for a living? Almost uniformly, they either got the facts wrong or claimed their “guides” did not allow them to see such trivia because it had no spiritual significance, Even if I give professional seers leeway for working creatively and intuitively, for accessing a part and not a whole, I can’t help wondering why it was hard for them to retrieve such simple information.

Hunger is something that we all think we have experienced. Afterall, isn’t it hunger that makes us cook dinner?

But I am not talking about that simple hunger, the hunger of boredom, or the “I guess it’s time to eat” hunger. I am talking about the kind of hunger that makes …

you feel weak

your head hurt

your stomach ache so bad that it actually is a burning sensation

makes your body tired, so that even moving to try to find food is difficult

when you will even eat bugs, grass, anything to stop that burn

makes you light headed and dizzy, sometimes to a point where you can not see

your breathing get harder

The kind of hunger where you can not wait for sleep to come, becasue for a brief moment, you will not feel it

the kind of hunger where that is all that is on your mind

The kind of hunger that makes you ravenous.

Do you know what hunger is?

I came across an article on yahoo today about how one person did what so many people are already doing in the UK simply because that is all they can afford, living off one pound per day.

It sounds impossible but that is what a lot of people have to do, because for them there is no alternative. What this woman find out from her experiment was, living off just one pound a day won’t leave you hungry, but it will leave you seriously unhealthy and bored with your meals.

For many people who are living in extreme poverty face this situation every day because they can’t afford anything better, and it must be a horrible way to live. And from the sound of things the woman had the same meals everyday for a whole week and they were not very exciting.

That was just the food, the article didn’t factor in other stuff, such as clothing, bills, toiletries. If you can only afford £7 per week for food then how in the world can you afford clothes?

The Government always promise to create more jobs and improve the lives of the people but it never happens, there are still millions of people in poverty all over the UK.

Here’s the link to the original article: http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/could-you-live-on-1-pound-a-day.html

Why the consequences strongly depend on effective regulation.

Genetically Modified food is, potentially, very harmful. The potential for harm is widespread- examples such as the genetically modified soya can indeed cause imminent health problems. Additionally, it may have the potential to cause damage that accumulates over long term use, or damage that does not appear for many years- this is indeed a problem. If we were to adopt GM foods that were not tested thoroughly, then many of these foods could turn out to be damaging. The most likely case would be this long term damage- it is the most insidious form of damage that is most likely to be difficult to detect, especially when a company that has developed a genetically modified food is trying to bring it to market within a reasonable span of time. This is the reason that GM foods have the greatest risk- they have the potential to harm a very large number of people over a long span of time. We should be able to trust the FDA and other regulatory agencies to defend us from these risks- however, as other FDA recalls in the recent past have proven, we are not always able to trust regulatory decisions to determine what we can and cannot eat. Therefore, with GM foods, as with any other regulated product that we bring into our bodies, there is an inherent risk that comes with using it. Some of the specific varieties of GM foods are more likely to be risky- ones that include pesticides produced by the organism, for example, may harm our bodies in a similar manner to the harm the pesticides eliminate pests. However, other GM foods are less likely to be risky. Rice that has been engineered to produce extra vitamin A and E is an excellent example- the properties of these vitamins are well known not to be detrimental to human health, and properly implemented genetic engineering will not cause the rice to produce any additional new chemicals than vitamin A and E.

Within technology in general, I also believe that GM foods are one of the most potentially beneficial to humanity. This is due to their vast potential to be another weapon in the war against malnutrition. As has been demonstrated thoroughly in our reading, malnutrition is a problem, and will continue to be one in the future. As our understanding of genetics grows, and our genetic engineering capabilities grow with it, we will be able to produce superior GM foods. With appropriate safety testing, these GM foods would be produce more calories per acre than traditional foods can- potentially saving the lives of millions of people, and with continued benefits over time. The key difference between whether it harms or hurts humanity, therefore, is in the specific details of the implementation.
