After years of talk, rising oil prices combined with global-warming concerns and a hate for foreign oil have finally set the stage for breakthroughs in alternative fuels. Ethanol has been one of if not the most talked about cure for our energy crisis. Some see it as the Holy Grail and others see impending problems with it.

Ethanol contains less energy per gallon than a gallon of gasoline. A car will not go as far on a gallon of ethanol as it would on a gallon of gasoline. Ethanol can be more expensive than conventional gasoline on the West Coast and East Coast. Some experts feel that emissions caused by the use of petroleum-based fuels to farm the corn and produce the ethanol may be greater than the emissions saved using ethanol as an alternative fuel.

There is always a positive to a negative. Like for this case Ethanol is a renewable fuel that comes from agricultural crops. It takes only six months to grow and harvest a crop such as corn which can be converted to ethanol. The use of ethanol can reduce the use of gasoline. A reduction in the use of gasoline reduces some of the dependence on foreign powers for fossil fuels. Crops such as corn can be grown and produced into ethanol in the United States.

My solution for this Idea of fuel safety is… NO, There are other useful and realistic ways of using food to get energy, such as eating it, and sadly some of the people in this world still go without this. So I say to the leading minds of the world stop dicking around. Before we go as far as to say that we have such an abundance of food that we can use it as fuel we need to make sure we take care of the people of our planet.
