Engrish is the strange, funny, inappropriate, or otherwise curious use of the English language in Japan. Some Engrish arises from unfortunately poor translation via public signs, instruction manuals, or menus (fried lice–tasty!). Most of it, however, comes from the peculiar aesthetic tastesof Japanese consumers. For them, English just looks cool, and no one really cares what it says. Like the guy in your gym whose Chinese tattoo means “fervent diarrhea.” Companies plaster random English buzzwords all over their products without regard to linguistic sense. Good news for us, because we love cheap laughs.

This sign was allegedly found on a toll road in Greece. As viewers can read from the sign, wandering travelers can pay their toll by E-pass, Smart Pass of “other means”. Based on the image circled in red, one can legitimately assume that the last method of payment refers to the act of prostitution.

However, wandering travelers should know that prostitution is indeed legal and regulated by the Greek government. Throughout ancient Greek history, human sexuality has been celebrated and respected as a form of art and now as a profession. Of course, this assumption could be incorrect. One might argue that this last image means that the Greek government allows a traveler the option of being a human table as payment for passage on this road…

This sign was found in an airport.  I’m not sure if it’s a restriction about what can be taken on an airplane or just a general “no Christmas crackers” at all rule.  Maybe it’s the loud noise that they make when they’re opened.  Maybe it’s the ridiculous hats you’re forced to wear once they’ve popped.  Or maybe they’re just tired of the crappy prizes inside of them.  You be the judge.

This baby Jesus looks like one of my babies — absolute huge!  My daughter weighed 11lbs 5oz at birth.  This baby looks like it weighs at least 100lbs when he’s compared to the other figures in the nativity.  Yikes, someone did NOT have a great Christmas.

Here’s one Christmas yard display that just leaves me scratching my head.  The homeowner actually changes the decorations around depending on what holiday it is.  Skulls in Santa hats just doesn’t really scream Christmas to me but to each their own I guess.

So why is English such a hilarious language to learn?

Answer 1: We learn verbs by playing a game of “look out – knock head,” you miss one verb, you have to run into a red iron bar once, you miss two verbs, the bar makes contact twice, you miss three…

Answer 2: We learn our opposites with obvious visual prompts.

Answer 3: English Speakers deep fry everything, so this is why the first exam is a cooking one! For your tasks you are required to, A. Fry innards, B. Eat innards, C. Wash it down with cider.

Answer 4: First oral exam requirement – chat up holy men and lead them astray with caffeine saturated drinks. You succeed, you pass Elementary English. You don’t, you get to join them.

So why is English the most hilarious language to learn?

    We can get high on every day foods.
