Actually I was going to write this for a young audience, but as old as I am, I just wrote this and now you are reading it. That is a great step for me, and I only spent an hour a day writing about any and everything, as well as researching publishers and their market.

It’s your future.

One hour a day is all you need to greatly increase the possibilities of your future. The internet is wide open for anyone that wants to tell you good or bad about something. Do the research for your field of interest, it’s the easy part and you really will increase your chances. Maybe even find new options.

For the gamers, think of the end of the game and you have just beaten the big bad guy. You are the man, the one. This is exactly how you can feel one hour a day working for your future. The problem with the game is that you loose the feeling once you realize that was the end of the game, but you will continue to feel great working that one hour towards tomorrow. Towards a career. It’s what you’re doing anyway. You are literally making up how you will spend the rest of your life. Everything you do today affects tomorrow, all you have to do is use that. You beat level five today, so tomorrow starts level six. Just make one hour a day, constructive.

For the outsiders, (sports, beach, park people) it’s like the feeling of that winning goal, that perfect picture, the warmth of the first spring sun. And you can feel it for an hour everyday, if it is building the future you want. You will have one, whether it is tomorrow, or twenty years from then, and you will be thankful.

For TV viewers and movie goers, how many times have you thought of a better ending? How many times are you left with more questions watching the news, than they even asked? You can not do better than what is there, if you do nothing. Now-a-days, video cameras are in pawn shops and public access is a stepping stone.

Everyone wants better for themselves and/or their family. Who is doing something about it and who is waiting for someone else to do something about it? How is today going? Did anyone do anything for you yesterday? Know that what happens tomorrow is seriously up to you.

What if the only thing that happens is the fact that you feel great about yourself for one hour a day? We have all wasted that much time everyday just relaxing for a moment, yet what is more relaxing than your own unique accomplishments. If you are an artist or writer of any kind, doing nothing will give you nothing to show, share, or even prove you have a talent.

If you are mechanically inclined, I know you are complaining about some of the nightmares that engineers constantly come up with. What ideas do you have? Whether you know it or not, you are constantly doing some kind of research already, just to keep up with the technology. Take an hour to research what you really think, and you will find options.

If you work in an office, you are constantly pumped for new ideas. For an hour a day, think of your life. You are the only one you can count on! Let everyone else count on you, but you must be able to count on yourself for one hour a day, or anyone else can and will control your future. And you may have no say in who it is.

One hour a day still leaves you 15 waking hours (or more like me) and generally speaking, 7 hours not under outside control. Set an alarm for a predetermined time, which can change according the influence of others, with an egg timer set for an hour once you start. And if the timer goes off and you want to continue, who cares. What and how you do it is up to you. Your future can be too. What is training, but a lot of practice? Every thing about you is a stepping stone.

At times it is all I had to battle my own depression. Remember, I am old, and I was not living the future I had thought I would have. It turned out that everyone I thought I could count on, never even had what I needed. My own accomplishments. Why would I think they did? Why didn’t I work one lousy hour a day, towards today? As old as I am, it would have been a lot of hours, and a lot more options than I have now. But proof be with me, tomorrow is the only time it is too late to start. Do not loose one more hour. Pick a time today and commit to yourself, or tomorrow will never be up to you

This is the first year that something so weird has come up.

As many of you know, or probably as many of you don’t, Merriam-Webster asks the public to vote upon a “Word of the Year” each year. Past years words have included: integrity, blog and democracy which have all reflected strong words that help to define the year in which they were voted winners. Last year word, truthiness, means something that is true from the gut or something that you wish to be true. While not being commonplace the word does have its uses and is still a word in the traditional sense of letters strung together to form a thought. However, there has been a disturbing change in the culture between last year and this, for this year’s word of the year is officially “w00t”.

That’s right folks; this year’s word of the year is not actually a word at all but rather a combination of letter s and numbers. This new language, called l33t (short for leet or in normal people speak, elite) is used by computer hackers and online gamers. The actual definition of the so called word is one of joy and similar to the word “yay”. I have a serious problem with this word being the word of the year for 2007 because of three reasons, which (luckily for you) I will elucidate below.

The first reason is fairly obvious; it’s not a freaking word! Word are made up of letters, numbers are made up of numbers. There are no words that contain numbers; those would be called….wait for it…..wait for it…… Bigger numbers! So how can you have a word made up of two letters and two numbers? You can’t. It’s asinine, ridiculous, ludicrous, and preposterous. First of all it makes no sense, and secondly can’t we think up a word that actually is a word?! No wonder other countries hate us.

The second reason is also fairly obvious; this “word” is from a made up language! That’s right, not only is it not a word it is a made up word from a made up language! Awesome! This is how this word was born, two preteen boys are sitting around their computer playing WOW and say to each other, “Yay! I totally just owned that guy’s elf! Did you see that?” “I did. But “yay” is so elementary school, I think we should make up a word.” “How about adding numbers in it?” “That would be awesome!” “How about the word “w00t”?” “W00t w00t!” And then the language was born. We should be really proud of our fellow countrymen for selecting such a great example of our intelligence.

The third and final reason is that there were real, legitimate, unique, and intelligence words to chose from. Words such as: conundrum, quixotic, and apathetic. And what did we pick? We pick w00t! Freaking w00t! It makes me ashamed to live here where such a grouping of symbols would even be considered a word. I mean, what is wrong with this country when “w00t” is selected as the word of the year? Unfortunately students and children everywhere will feel that it is OK to write things in that moronic text messaging language, making letters and number interchangeable. It is a sad state for our country and shows just how sad and pathetic we have become. On the bright side, at least the majority of people using words such as w00t can’t vote. Yet. Heaven help us when they can.
